Benitez drools over Robbie Keane - what would Spurs fans say to the Liverpool boss..in SIX words?!?
by Dexter on July 11th, 2008 Liverpool gaffer Rafa B has taken to openly declaring his love for players these days, and - like an amorous drunk leering over other people’s girlfriends - he’s cruising for a bruising.
Benitez said:
“Keane is one of the names on our list and we are still working with other names.
“We were in contact [with Tottenham] and we will see now. Keane is clearly a player that has game intelligence. We are looking for players who can fit into our systems and improve the team.”
Rafa’s masterplan is to combine Keane and Torres up front, but with his reduced spending power, has he got a chance? What would Spurs fans say to Rafa, in six words?….

Why does the silly little man think its ok to publically tap up players?
It might be ok to do so in Spain but no other managers in the premier league do it! Where is his respect for his peer’s?

they finished 11 last season in the league WITH keane,

Hope you get the carling cup this year.

Benitez has done NOTHING wrong in his search for players.
Name me a manager who DOES NOT use the media to declare an interest in a potential transfer target.
Mourinho, Ranieri, Redknapp, Allerdyce, Wenger etc etc etc
Ferguson was/is the King of it but does anyone kick up a fuss?
NO!
Benitez, if anything, is too honest for his own good and perhaps he should keep quiet about who he wants and just get on with it.

“they finished 11 last season in the league WITH keane,

oh im sorry, do the 2 seasons prior to the last one, both of which we finished 5th WITH keane, mean nothing?! if he goes to liverpool, he’ll be ruined by the rotation policy and realise what an error he’s made! he’s cruising for a spurs legend status, hall of fame and all, if he goes to liverpool - his “boyhood club” (anyone remember that he actually supported celtic as a lad?!) - then he’ll drift off to retirement after a few boring seasons at anfield.
Tricky - July 11th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Well said cookie, everyone overlooks Redknapps comments about Liverpool players, Fergusons pursuit of Saha were Saha even threatened to strike, and the many more managers who say these things.
This story broke two weeks ago and for anyone who bothered to actually look at the interview, Benitez tried to avoid questions related to transfer targets, as he clearly stated We are here to discuss the two new guys (not exactly in them words).
Like Spurs are strongly linked to Luis Garcia but would it be a sin for Ramos to say yes I’am and have contacted his club but I dont wish to discuss it further, Oh no, its only a sin when its one of your own players.
Get a grip, the fact is your only reading this article because you want to know whats going on at your club, and basically WE WOULD ALL LOVE TO KNOW WHO OUR CLUBS WANT TO BUY, THATS WHY WERE SO INTERESTED IN THE GOSSIP AND RUMOURS.

You sound like a bunch of scared southerners, crying over losing ur main man. Rafa is not the first to talk of admiration 4 a player, Harry red. was doing it 4 weeks with crouch. I would hardly describe his comments as drooling either, did a spurs fan write the article by any chance? Not good journalism pal, u need to have balance in your articles.
spurs fan - July 11th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
indeed, if they are finding it so hard to conclude this deal for barry then how on earth will they be able to fund a move for keane? he’s valued by spurs at 20mill and pool were reportedly going to offer crouch an 5mill… now crouch has gone for a reported 10mill, meaning they still only have 15mill to use in an attempt to get a 20mill player… poor scousers, can’t afford 2 players

bgudg - July 11th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
ruined by the rotation policy? seriously?
if you havent noticed the only players he seems to rotate are seemingly squad players such as arbeloa, riise, pennant, babel and so forth.
He very much keeps the spine intact such as Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano, Carragher.
If Keane were to come in he has proven himself worthy to become part of that spine of the team, and be rotated for the carling cup matches that spurs find ever so important.
Also im sure he wouldnt mind trading in sitting a few matches for the chance to play in the champions league. Something liverpool exceed in almost every year under benitez.
And as for his celtic allegiance yes he does follow them too, but often times people from britian outside of england follow not only a team from their country but also a premiership team, which for Keane would be liverpool. Get your facts straight.

Have you not noticed we actually play in the champions league every season and actually do quite well? Im not sure Keane would find 0-1 win at the san siro boring! Or how about 1-2 at the Nou Camp, that boring enough for you? Sort it out mate.

bgudg - July 11th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
spurs fan the answer to your question is because he doesnt want him to get injured in some no name competition like the carling cup or fa cup, often times second string teams for the big 4. He started out rotating him early on in the season to let his legs get used to the pace of the premiership. During the new year he hardly ever sat on the bench.
Also if you look at arsenal who hardly ever rotated their core 11 they started great but dragged as the year went on. They got tired when liverpool were still fresh which caused them to lose to liverpool in the champions league quarters.
Reverential - July 11th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

MOBSTER:
Is it really great to have money and routinely outspend Liverpool every year?
So then, tell me what your BIG money spending has done for you in recent years!!!!!
Robbie Keane wants to join Liverpool and rotation or not, he will still end up with more medals at Anfield and regular Champions League football (do you know what that is?) than if he stayed with a ‘nearly’ small time team living in the Southern shadows of Arsenal & Chelsea.
If spurs were a big team (like Arsenal & Chelsea) then he might just want to stay, but Spurs!!! The lad has got ambition.

He didnt score a hatrick every time he played, after an early injury that kept him out for 3 weeks torres played vertually all our games, bar a few small time games like the carling cup. U really need to look at the facts pal, he was playing in every game except the fa cup away at luton, or home to havant, u’d be daft to play him in those games. Clueless pal. U think its a coincidence that so many liverpool fans are telling you he wasnt rotated? I bet Keane was rotated more last season.
spurs fan - July 11th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
exactly scorpion - hutton and woodgate proved themselves in a spurs shirt. remains to be seen if gomes, modric, and dos santos can adapt to the premiership, though my guess is they can. to those saying spurs do all this big spending for nothing - i admit, we have spent big on players with potential who haven’t fulfilled it. but we have also spent big on players such as berbatov, someone that we’ll recoup a lot of money on if we sell. we have also signed big players on small fees - lennon, bale, huddlestone, carrick (who, again, we made a huge profit on, however irritating it was to see him go).

I think we’re only guna sign barry if we sell alonso, thats why villa have shot themselves in the foot coz i dont think alonso is going, they’re guna be left with a guy who wont play 4 them n thn we’ll sign him on the cheap. I thnk he wants keane b4 barry basically. alonso is better than barry anyhow
SPURS81,82 - July 11th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
True alonso is better than barry, and he aint worth 18 mill either. As a Spurs fan why am i deluded, yes we have a few better years since the prem started, but we maybe a bottom half team just this year but we went away with a cup!!
What all Spurs fans are thinking but dont dare say - July 11th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Personnally and although I hate to admit it, I dont think Beni has said/done much wrong, I think the reason why us Spurs fans are so upset is that its quiet probable that if (and lets hope with their current financial situation its a big `if`) Liverpool can stump up enough cash then Keane will most likely go
its a sad fact but there you have it. Any club though would be upset to loose a good player, bet the liverpool fans were really pissed off when Gerrard was so heavily linked to Chelsea, and ManU fans hate the current situation with Ronaldo.
This whole situation is dodgy though for sure, it seems that managers can now use a loop hole through the media to talk to players before getting permission of the club, which is pretty much what tapping up a player is. Its most apparent in the Barry case, Liverpool have not been given permission to speak to Barry yet, however look at all the dialogue going on in the media. Ronaldo and Real are doing it too, so’s Inter and Lampard, ok so its not exactly a two way conversation but its pretty obvious that there is a degree of dialogue going on between the two parties.
Spurs have a strong `dont comment on speculation` stance with regards to the media hence we are not so bad at it, but we could easily go around upsetting clubs like West Ham, Newcastle, Villa, Blackburn etc by declaring interest in their players, like Man U, Liverpool and other big clubs are doing.
I dont think the managers are to blame they are just using the tools available to them to get an edge, its a bit cheeky yes but it within the rules. If Spurs thought Liverpool were out of line they could complain to the authoritees like Utd did but I doubt they would get anywhere, only time this really worked was with regards to Arnasen and Chelsea.
Only way to resolve this is for ALL clubs to be barred from making comments in the media about transfer activity, but this I expect is completly contry to what us Fans want, we all crave info on transfers so we are the one’s behind this situation, the media and clubs are only responding to our demand for information.
So my six words are:
`live with it, its our fault`
spurs fan - July 11th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
keane is worth 20mill TO US, thats why WE have valued him as that. he’s not worth 20mill to you so why compare? and its true, after all of this, rafa is going to have to decide who the splash the cash on - barry or keane?
Keanno - July 11th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Reverential, you cant value Keane by using Torres as a benchmark. Torres’s strength was his agility and pace. This will fade as he aged. keane’s biggest asset is his intelligence. Even keane is 30 odd, his intelligence remains. That is the difference. keane’s ability will not be impaired with time.
Keanno is blind - July 11th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
“Torres’s strength was his agility and pace. This will fade as he aged. keane’s biggest asset is his intelligence. Even keane is 30 odd, his intelligence remains.”
Kenno. What planet are you from? Cos I think the oxygen levels on this one have done serious damage to the vision and judgement area in your brain!!
You don’t think that Torres has game intelligence?! Are you serious? Did you witness his goal in the Euro Champs final? Having the intelligence to make that run and ‘dink’ the ball over Lame-man, under all that pressure and attention?
Oh, yes and he’s just turned 24, a few years younger than Van Horse-face, just having broken his record of most goals scored by a foreign player in their first season (ALL in open play, not through penalties AND free kicks as that ’slave’ Ronaldope)!!
Did you not witness the intelligent positions and runs and that he NEEDED to create to score those goals?
Just what do you deem as ‘intelligence?’

i’m a lfc supporter and always admired Keane for his team work and intelligence. the only reason all you spurs fans are getting all worked up for is because you don’t want your best player to leave. but when you say things like;’
Dross? Hutton, Woodgate, Modric, Gomes, Giovani?
Hutton was alright buthe didn’t exactly light up the premier league with his brilliant displays now did he? Admittedly woodgate was good, but as for the other 3 they’ve never played in the EPL before so how can you come to a conclusion that they are not ‘dross’, considering Modric if he was crap this year that 20m would turn out to be not well spent? finally as for Dos Santos why do you think you got him on the cheap and no other ‘top’ clubs came in for him, the reason is because hes too lightweight for the EPL and is a party boy that was out of control at Barca.

mark, your the one that needs an education in football matters. For your information Giovani Dos Santos turned down Man utd, chelsea and Ajax to come to spurs (his own words). And he also turned down an offer from Barca to stay at the club, so as he only had one year left on his contract they sold him. Same with Luca Modric, several top european clubs were after him but we got in first. As for Gomes, he holds the record in Holland for the most clean sheets (Its over 900 hours of consecutive football without conceding, thats over 10 games for you uneducated scousers, and thats in a very attacking league) and to top it all off, we didnt have to tap up any of them.
