Arsenal in SHOCK £18m star bid: Top class player at his peak!
by Mr Comfort on July 12th, 2008Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had set his mind to securing this England international but it appears that Arsene Wenger is planning a late attempt to beat him to the punch!
Arsenal have been linked with a late bid to sign Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry.
It had been thought the England international would eventually be heading to Liverpool, with the Anfield club having already made three unsuccessful bids for the player.
Barry has even expressed his desire to play under Rafa Benitez, and in turn get regular Champions League football, but that was before Arsenal showed their hand.
According to the Sun, manager Arsene Wenger declared his interest in midweek and Arsenal officials have contacted Villa to find out the latest position.
No official bid has been made by the north London club for Barry, but it is understood they are willing to make a player-plus-cash deal, possibly involving Justin Hoyte.
Villa are holding out for £18m, a figure Liverpool have yet to match, giving Arsenal hope of snatching the player from under their noses. (Daily Telegraph)
Gareth Barry has surely played his last game for Aston Villa but all the back and forth between Martin O’Neill and Liverpool regarding a suitable fee for the England man may have led to Wenger planning to sneak in with his own bid. The Gunners boss may see the 27 year old as a perfect replacement for Mathieu Flamini and given the cash injection likely to come from the probable sales of Hleb and Adebayor they may well have the money to outbid the Merseyside outfit. Do Arsenal fans think that the Villa skipper has what it takes to fill the Flamster’s boots?

Stuart - July 12th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Yeah i think Barry would be a good signing and maybe O’Neill will be so annoyed with the blatant tapping up by Liverpool that he will sell to Arsenal just to make a point!
Frank - July 12th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
I hope we beat Liverpool to him, after all we have a lot more to offer than them.
Adrian - July 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Actually Arsenal are welcome to him as a Liverpool fan i can honestly say that i don’t know what all the fuss is about Barry. I would much rather keep Alonso than pay the kind of money MON wants!
arsenal 4 life - July 12th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

ARSENER - July 12th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Have already signed Nasri and with Amaury Bischoff joining us soon, why do we needs to spend £18m on 27 years old Barry? Arsenal needs Jan Klas Huntleaar to win Champion League not Barry.
anon - July 12th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
i agree we don’t need him, we need a good replacement for ade… maybe huntleaar or podolski or falcao
bill - July 12th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
he’d be a great signing for arsenal, with his passing game he would flourish at Arsenal, his passing game would suit the way arsenal play, and to be honest we are a much better option for him than liverpool.
Doodie - July 12th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
18million is far too much. Barry is a good player but he’s not great. I dont see why he is being hyped up so much by the English press!
daymee - July 12th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
I expect Arsene to sign Falcao anyway.
O’Neill needs a right back and he recently enquired about Justin Hoyte.
Wenger needs to close this deal as soon as possible. He is the only senior regular England midfielder available. All the rest have been snapped up.
England will always play Barry in games and this guy is an Arsenal type of player. Liverpool will not pay more than £15m. O’Neill would take £10m + Justin Hoyte and honestly that is a win-win situation for both clubs. Villa will be getting a very decent player joining up with guys within his age group (Knight, Young, Reo-Coker, Agbonlahor, etc). I hope Wenger nabs Barry fast. He will fit straight into that DM role and we wouldn’t miss Flamini at all.
Honestly, it’s glove to hand what Barry will be to Arsenal. Pace, vision, passing and movement! Need I say more. Up to you Sir Wenger!
Akbar - July 12th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Perfect .. only if this is news is true. I hope it is!
Corkgooner - July 12th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Adrian is right about Alonso I would have him at Arsenal before Gerard never mind Barry. Although i highly rate Barry at the same time.
mohammed - July 12th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Jackman (arsenal fan) - July 12th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
barry is pure class but is goin 2 the kop we should get moutinho, veloso
or yaya toure
Finiky - July 12th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Barry is worth nowhere near 10 million let alone 18, O’Niell is a fool to think he can get that much and Villa fans are fools to think he’s an England regular just because he plays a few games covering the likes of Carrick while they were out injured. Arsenal will buy Messi.
blake - July 12th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
i think with the 30 mil ade could be goin 4 then the 15 mil 4 hleb we will have 45 mil if we can bid 20 mil plus eboue instead of hoyte then o’niell will find it hard to reject that bid
Moray - July 12th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
good buy for Arsenal, though I agree he’s around £12m mark for me. £10 + Hoyte would be good business, and an opportunity for O’Neill to show Benitez what he thinks of his gamesmanship…
sabiu isa - July 12th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
is it for arsen to sing barry pls try this is for the arsenal football is fantetsties to jond febragas in the mildfille
Crispy - July 12th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Finiky is obviously demented although in his favour he can spell better than some of you foreigners! Messi to Arsenal - in your dreams my son.
Barry to Arsenal is sound business. That will show Rafa Beneathus and his all his Liverpool followers that there is a proper way of conducting business.
As for Adrian - he is a twonk

what a load of bxxxxcks, Liverpool want him for 6 million and then all the liverpool fans would be happy with him, likewise all us arsenal fans want ronaldo for 10 million and then we would be happy.
You all say your happy with Alonso, he’s scored 12 goals in 4 seasons at Liverpool and as only played an average of just over 20 games per season.
Id be happy with Alonso when he’s fit but tell how often his he fit?
Goonerc - July 12th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
“arsenal in 18m bid” since when the fuck have we actually bid for him?
i know you want people to read this load of bollocks but this is the most shite i’ve heard this season.
Barry is average and 18m is an absolute joke. Let liverpool waste their money.
Shaun - July 12th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
To Goonerc, to be fair the source he has quoted say’s that Arsenal are linked with a late bid, so the headline is not exactly wide of the mark. I do agree with u though, Barry ain’t worth 18m!
danny - July 12th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
i really really hope we sign him i think he’ll be immense if he comes to arsenal and he’ll give fab and nasri more freedom to go forward and attack
doobie - July 12th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
barry & gerrard in the middle have been proven formidable for england. so i say disrupt the kop kunts’ flow at all costs.
Smudger - July 12th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Sorry, who’s the top class player Arsenal are linked with? The only player I see in this article is Gareth Barry.

It is going to be a long season, for the first time I have doubts maytbe Arsen’s time has come to an end.
Flam going, Ade and Helb about to go and no quality cover in any position. TV pundits aside look at the bookies they have us in 5th position.

Arsen has lost it.
We have no squad and no money.
Bring back George.
arsenal 4 life - July 13th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Mcgooner i understand what your saying
but theres no way we will finish 5th or 4th we will be in the top 3 and i think we will win atleast 2 trophies next season
about gareth barry as i said before id like 2 see him at arsenal and i think he would become a great arsenal player and he would be a regular starter along with fabregas
this is my team 4 next season
Fabianski
sagna toure gallas clichy
nasri barry fabregas ramsey/walcott
arshavin v.persie/eduardo(when hes back from injury)
subs:rosicky, eduardo or rvp, mannone, denilson, nzogbia and vela
would like to see arshavin sign and wouldnt mind seein hleb, adebayor, almunia and senderos goin but if i had 2 keep hold of 1 of them it would be senderos probably

arsenal 4 life that really does look like a good team but the only thing, i don’t think Fabianski is ready yet he needs a couple more years experience. Gareth barry is a fantastic player and it would be great if he signed for us.
stevesai - July 13th, 2008 at 3:51 am
What do Arsenal need to win and be successful??
Sell Adebayor and Hleb
stevesai - July 13th, 2008 at 3:54 am
What do Arsenal need to win and be successful??
Sell Adebayor, Gilberto and Hleb 25 mill, 2 mill and 12.5 mill = 27 mill
Buy Santa Cruz, Falcao and Albiol 12 mill, 10 mill and 8 mill = 30 mill
Sant aplays up front, Falcao takes Freddies old role and scores 12 to 15 goals a season once settled and Albiol plays DM and backs up the defence as we needed
We win
GoonerIndia - July 13th, 2008 at 6:03 am
No way do you think he is better than YAYA” KOLO Brother” TOURE
I think we shud get 7 mil+YAYA and give them Helb. I think that would be better there’s a reason AW wont buy english player, They are terribly overpriced.
Shaker308 - July 13th, 2008 at 6:53 am
Barry is not worth 18M. The only reason he is rated at 18M is because he’s English. He’s a good player and will do well at Arsenal but Arsene would only consider buying him at 10M, no more.
At the moment, we need a GK (replacement for Lehman), a strong CB with aerial ability to replace Gallas or Toure in case of injury and generally fight for a starting berth.
We need a DM, one Yaya Toure will do nicely. We are a pretty small team and if Ade leaves we will almost be one of the smallest in the league.
Ade’s recent remarks/demands have been very upsetting but I still want us to hold on to him. His finishing is not great but he will still score a lot of goals given our MF. At the moment, there aren’t many strikers out there in the right age bracket who will cut it in the Prem. The Hunter is rated but will take time to settle.
Lastly, please forget about Arshavin, Villa, Barry, Veloso, and all those players above 15M who are linked to Arsenal. It’s not gonna happen. Our priority is as follows:
1. Get a DF - Hleb = Yaya + 6M
2. Get a GK, a good one who will keep Almunia on his toes.
3. Get a good (tall) CB with strong aerial ability.
4. Try to keep Ade. He’s a menace to any defender and we need that for Cesc and co. to flourish.
With this, we will challenge for honors, without a doubt.
Internet Gooner - July 13th, 2008 at 7:24 am
Liverpool don’t need him as they have Mascherano. At least at Arsenal he’d be in the team.
kitch - July 13th, 2008 at 7:38 am
Barry not worth the money and would not fit in with current squad he is too slow.
Tipsy Mcstagger - July 13th, 2008 at 11:13 am
As a Villa fan i hope he goes to Arsenal after the way those scouse pikey twats have acted.
kieranT - July 13th, 2008 at 11:20 am
yes villa may accept arsenals bid but barry as said that he wants to come to liverpool so he will most likely reject unless he would rather go to arsenal???

TREW-AFC
thank you for the nice comment about my team and about fabianski the only reason i put him in is because i just dont think that almunia is good enough to be arsenal gk and i know wenger wont buy a new one so i thought to put fabianski in goal
altough i wish we still had lehmann because he was 1 of arsenal best ever keepers
Badger - July 13th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
As a Villa fan, I’d prefer to see Barry go to the Arsenal, just to stick two fingers up to Rafa. I also think he’d be good for your style of play.
One thing though, he has no pace whatsoever, contrary to what was said earlier. But he more than makes up for it with his speed of thought and vision. He very rarely makes a bad pass and this is where his real strength lies, in that his consistency is second to none.
Gooner - July 13th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
I beleive that Barry would be a great signing as he can play in the centre of midfield or cover on the left handside and also cover at leftback or centre back, I also agree with the the Villa supporter that fingers up at Rafa what an insult
chaz - July 13th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Arsenal are on a downhill slide. Gareth barry knows that half your team are on the hop and at his age he would only have two seasons before being sold for young talent preferably african or french.
starstarstar - July 14th, 2008 at 3:38 am
Wahahahaha just let Arsenal sign him. Then LFC keep Alonso. Nice and good. Barry please sign for Arsenal.
Jonzik - July 14th, 2008 at 6:43 am
I think that barry is overrated, not because of his football skills but because of his age. h only has 3-4 years left, and this means that each year costs around 5M. and this is expensive. Liverpool bought Mascerano for the same money, but he has 8-9 good years left, which means 2M per year. And Barry is not twice as good as Mascerano. And of course the same aplies to Arsenal.
I say, let O’neil stick with him, after the arrogant way he behaved all the way, and falling out with Barry. Next year he will cost less than half what Villa ask for him now
mamba - July 14th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
i really hope Barry goes to Arsenal. i am quite happy with Alonso and Masha.
we can spend that cash on a winger and maybe another striker.
BARRY IS A BUM!!
mboza - July 14th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
