Manchester United to launch SHOCKING £5m striker bid: Could this really be true?
by Mr Comfort on July 12th, 2008Sir Alex has been said to be a long term admirer of this former Liverpool goal-scorer but will Manchester United really make this incredible bid?
Michael Owen is paid top dollar at Newcastle United and owner Mike Ashley wants to do something about that. According to a report in The Daily Mail, Owen is entering the final year of his contract worth £110,000 per week and the Newcastle board wants to slash his weekly wages by £30,000.
The report states that the player’s representatives have been invited for one round of negotiations. Should a deal not be agreed then, the player will be allowed to seek a move.
There is no shortage of interest in Michael Owen as the diminutive striker is known for his clinical goalscoring record, but the club most interested is thought to be Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for reinforcements in his attacking department and he could get bargain if Owen does not agree to Newcastle’s terms. According to the report, Newcastle would be willing to let their striker leave for about £5 million. (Soccernews.com)
There is obviously no love lost between the Merseyside club and Man United but that would surely matter no jot to Sir Alex Ferguson if he feels the stuttering ace still has something to offer. Since leaving Anfield the 28 year old’s career has gone backwards rather than forwards but towards the tail end of last season he was beginning to look more like the feared finisher he once was. Many believe that the most important signing that the Old Trafford side need is an instinctive goal machine, hence the interest in the likes of Huntelaar. Owen would be significantly cheaper than most targets and injury permitting, he has a few good years left in the tank. Do United fans think that Fergie should try to sign the England international?

No thanks, don’t need another treatment room special, also lost too much pace, and short to boot
The One - July 12th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
No, No , No. We are tired of Saha and we do not need another injury proned player in our team. Too old and I believe he is past his prime. We need younger player who score goals. United for Life!!!
ian - July 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Falcao all day for me,22 deadly with both feet and head and has pace in abundance!!
Terse - July 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Capital NO! I don’t think we need somebody like that in our team. what we really want is young and talented players and not old ones with numeous injuries. Rather our Saha should stay because he will surely come back in form

You morons!
5 millions for Owen is a bargain. Whether or not he has played for Liverpool matters nothing!!! Fergie will make Owen to what he should be… 30 goals plus a season!!! Owen and Rooney… yesyesyes… 5M for his services … yesyesyes

Alex is crazy to want to make one signing, if this is what it takes to make two with Berbatov then i am for it, Owen is injury prone but he will get a few goals for us and give us that extra back bone to win us more titles this year, anything that helps stops Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool winning anything gets a thumbs up from me.
Matthew N. Gravis - July 12th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
With Manucho injured and unproven, Saha injured or on his way out, Rooney and Tevez short and mainly creative footballers, Wellbeck and Campbell are too young and fragile to be able to challenge anyone in the air. We’ve got some strikers in the club, but almost every single one is too small, young or mediocre to be our impact player. We need a big, strong, tall powerhouse up front who’s a natural goalscorer.
Owen is a natural goalscorer, but clearly not the right type of player for United. £5m is a bargain for a player of Owen’s quality, but at this moment in time, I’d say: “Thanks, but no thanks.”
He’d be the perfect striker for ..Liverpool(!) actually…
I say, double (or quadrouple) the money, and go for a player in the same mould as Adriano, Berbatov or Santa Cruz. Not necessary these players exactly, but the same type of player… (Although, I think all of these players would work.. Adriano is on his way back, just wait and see.)

I know for a fact this is the second time fergie has tried to sign him he really rates him which he should do when he is fit he can score goals from nothing and i think he would score goals for fun at utd with the ugly brothers behind him but if you dont want him im a liverpool fan and for 5m i would snatch the black and white idiots hands off for him.

Update to Rafa.
Everything going to plan. I’ve been as shit as I can for Newcastle, so now they want to get rid of me. My transfer value has decreased and now Man Ure are sniffing around. Brilliant! If all goes to plan it will be Liverpool v Man Ure in Champions League Final next year, I’ll play shit then miss the last penalty in the shoot-out. United will then get rid of me and LFC can take me back for nothing. Tell Stevie G. and Carra to get the ale in, I’ll see them in the pub this afternoon.

I hear ex-liverpool Pako Ayerstan is a target of Fergies as well ……….. next thing you’ll be calling yourselves ”the reds” …….. and trying to win eighteen titles and 5 european cups.
Jimmy The Weed - July 13th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Er, like, No. He was past his best even before he left Liverpool. He’s short, has lost pace, and would be an uninspiring addition of Laurent Blac-ian proportions. We need to focus on Berbatov or Huntelaar. I keep seeing us linked with donkey-Owen and it’s really annoyng! Get a grip!
bee baileys.. - July 13th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

chaz - July 13th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
For 5 million why don’t liverpool re sign him. what better cover for torres.
Jonzik - July 14th, 2008 at 6:39 am
As a Liverpool fan I do not want to see Owen back, for sentimental reasons, I cannot forgive him for the way he left us (although seeing his pals winning the CL the next season, and him winning nothing is a good punishment).
Apart from that, all the things said above about his speed, his injuries etc. are true, but he can still be the perfect backup striker for any big team, Arsenal (with addebayor probably leaving) would make more sense to me as it would be weird for a former liverpool idol to play for Manu
