Arsenal plan astounding £43m trio bid: TWO Good, ONE Average!
by Mr Comfort on July 13th, 2008The Sunday papers are as always brim filled to bursting with rumours that may or may not have a solid basis in fact, according to these sources Arsene Wenger is planning one hell of a spending spree!
Arsenal are lining up a £10m bid for Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins if Emmanuel Adebayor leaves the club to join AC Milan. (Sunday Express)
Countered by claims that…
OBAFEMI MARTINS is staying at Newcastle — after Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insisted he is not interested in him.
Amid renewed speculation linking Martins with the Gunners, the Sunday Sun understands Wenger has discreetly informed United officials he has no plans to move for the Nigerian striker. (Sunday Sun)
Arsenal could be ready to hijack Liverpool’s move to sign Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry with the two clubs still to agree a price. Arsene Wenger has been keeping a close eye on the situation and reportedly made his interest known in the England star in midweek, with Gunners officials said to have contacted Villa to find out the latest position. (Eatsleepsport.com)
If he misses out on the England midfielder, then Wenger is likely to make another attempt to persuade Pompey to sell Croatian midfielder Kranjcar for around £15m.(Sunday Express)
Gareth Barry and Niko Kranjcar would both be very useful additions, neatly filling holes left by Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb (who looks destined to leave), however Obafemi Martins move to Emirates would make less sense to me and I would be very surprised if such a deal would ever take place. Whilst the Nigerian striker is by no means a bad player he surely is not up to the standard desired by Wenger hence the likely validity of the source above claiming that any move for the Newcastle man is more than likely a product of a over zealous agent or journo. Having finally sewn up the Nasri deal Gunners fans no doubt eagerly await more new additions especially as the likes of Adebayor, Hleb and Gilberto appear to be heading for a summer exit. Who out of this trio do Arsenal fans most want to see Arsene sign?

With Gilberto’s exit nearing, I would love to see the likes of Gareth Barry in the Arsenal colours alongside Cesc, Vela and Samir, a formidable centrefold. If the useless black ostrich (Adebayor) does move on we would certainly need a replacement up front with the likes of Arshavin, Berbatov, Robinho, Pavlyuchenko being great coices, but Huntelaar is filling more the bill, being Arsene’s 1st choice.
Still I do think we need another helping upfront. wehat about at the back with gallas ageing and Senderos always not at his best we need cover quick at the back, we need to solidify that back four as done in the years past.
Samik - July 13th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
agree with goonerguy… but if we cant get huntelaar, and we do lose ade, may be martins wudnt be dat bad….. he is one guy who runs his heart out on the field… we cud do with one such player
Gooner Col - July 13th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I also agree with Goonerguy, Huntelaar to replace Ade, Veleso or Barry to replace flamini, Nasri to replace Hleb, if we cannot get Huntelaar then Falcao could do a great job for us too he is a great player! big CB would be a good idea too me thinks! Up the Arse!
David - July 13th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
I thik that kranjar is a good young player who with the arsenal coaching team could turn into one amazing player.
Barry to me is abit overpriced so i would go for Arteta or Van Der Vaart
If ade does leave then Huntelaar would be a good buy or maybe try get David Villa but if we get Huntelaar then we would have moeny left over from ade’s transfer and would be able to go after another player
GunnerX - July 13th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
After last season,I thought the idea was to add 2 or 3 players to the squad, at this rate we will need at least another 4 additions to present a stronger squad than we had last season. I still think we are short in the goal keeping and defensive area’s. Arsene should be buying in regardless of the Ade/Helb situation.
conor - July 13th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
BUY HUNTERLAAR AND VELESO AND PUT IN A BID FOR SILVA
GET RID OF DAT WASTE OF SPACE ADEBAYOR SERIOUSLY HE S SO OVER RATED…..
scottpuffin - July 13th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
It amazes me when people batter a player for fun, just because he wants to leave the club. Adebayor is not rubbish people, he was leading the line last season and he did a bloody good job.
Fair enough, he does miss a lot of chances, but he is still very young. How many seasons went by with people moaning about the amount of simple chances Henry would miss (”he would only score great goals”).

I agree Adebayor is a good player and can improve but he simply doesn’t have the brain of a striker. There is something you recognise in a pure striker and that is “footballing brain”. He has got skills but he is not the sharpest tool in the box! I’m sorry to say. He has a chance of being an effective second striker in his career but I doubt whether his first touch will ever be as good as the best strikers we all know. I really do hope Arsene goes out and buys an “assassin” (striker). The kind of football Arsenal play, we will be reaping better rewards had we players in the mould of Torres or Drogba or Villa or Huntelaar or Falcao. Any of these guys I’ve mentioned would give a higher return and Arsenal would not be worrying about our defense too much.
Lets take a game for example.
Arsenal go into a game knowing if they play well, they will create chances. Depending on who the top scorer is you will expect to score goals. With Adebayor as top scorer and Arsenal having only 2-3 clear cut chances in a game, the players know Adebayor may struggle to score 1 goal in 3 chances. Give Torres 2 chances, he is so sharp and accurate that you can rest assured that he will score 1 of the 2. That accuracy, razor sharp killer factor is what I’m on about and I know you know what I’m on about. Its about time Arsenal brought in a complete sniper of a striker. Afterall, the better the striker the higher our chances.
Personally, I’d buy Falcao and Huntelaar and both will cost £25m- £28m. Thats two for the price of 1. These 2 guys will destroy our rivals in the PL. No more park the bus working against us any more. These guys will get behind defences at will (which has been Adebayor’s achilles heel 80% of the time) in those big games. How many times was Adebayor caught offside? He still didn’t learn did he? He got caught offside over and over and over again, you just wonder about his footballing brain.
scottpuffin - July 13th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Disagree man, the guy scored 30 goals last season, and he was pretty much carrying the front line alone.
I know what you think of him, but Walcott never had a footballing brain until the end of the season.
The guy is young, Henry was the same as a youngster too.

Mohammed, I think you’re jumping on the media bandwagon if I’m totally honest.
Do you really want us to sign Arshavin, Huntelaar and Veloso? Would they be anything without the hype of the media?
Arshavin had a good euros and a good season last year, but what has he done prior to that? Huntellar is a big risk, scores goals in the dutch league, could be hit or miss. For every van Nistelrooy I’ll give you a Kezman.
And has anyone actually seen Veloso play?

i totally agree with goonerguy….
we’de rather use the same money and sign velloso as a flamini replacement and huntelaar as an adebayor replacement…
Moray - July 14th, 2008 at 4:41 am
we desperately need height and strength. Remember we were saying this all through last season? We seem to ave forgotten this very quicky. If we lose Adebayor we also lose the one outstandingly athletic player we have. Whatever his finishing is like, he did still provide us with an alternative way of playing, and a “thorn in the side” kind of forward. If we signed Martins, we’d be relying on a small pacy individual (he’s 5′7”). Gareth Barry at 6′0” is a bit better. Kranjcar is about the same, I believe.

With all this talk of forwards and midfielders, it has clouded over the issue nof our defensive shortcomings. We still seem to be heading into the new season with a Toure/Gallas pairing in central defence which patently did not work last season.
Are we to see all our great approach work and beautiful goals undone again by some hopeful hoofs down the middle by the Boltons of the PL.
Instead of talk of Kranjcar etc, I would be far happier if we were signing Micah Richards and a goalkeeper like Joe Hart to tie things up at the back.

Totally agree with clockendjim. How come no one’s talking about defenders? And why the spoon does Senderos keep appearing on people’s lists? My heart sinks everytime I see him come out the tunnel!
We need two big, solid, central defenders. 1 to go right into the team, and the other to replace Senderos on the bench.
brandon - July 21st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
buy veloso falcao and krancjar and we will win d treble next season
Arsenal 4 life - July 27th, 2008 at 5:22 am
We are not goin to buy people like Berbatov or Robinho because Arsene Wenger has never bought a big name so that won’t happen. Adebayor is a wanker and a Judas so I hope he leaves because personally I think the team will be better off without him. If we can get 25 million from him then I would buy the ticket to milan or barca for him myself. I agree with maybe arsenal buying barry but his dream move is to Liverpool so he can play with his boyfriend Gerrard, so I don’t think that will happen but it is possible. We will get 2 midfielders and if Adebayor leaves then we will get a stricker but the only person I can see coming to Arsenal is maybe barry or Arshavin if Zenit lower their price to 18 - 20 million not 22 because he is unproven in any other league apart from the Russian. Arsenal are okay defensively because we have djorou and senderos who always works hard no matter what also we have Kerrea Gilbert and Traore. We have solid players coming through the youth system like Barazite and Rui Fonte all we need is someone to replace Gilberto and Flamini and remember we have Rosicky. If Adebayor leaves I can possibly see David Villa coming to Arsenal but like I said I have never seen Arsene Wenger buy a big name but I really hope we get Villa. Regardless I still think Arsenal will challenge for the title next year.
Jackman (arsenal fan) - July 27th, 2008 at 11:11 am
No we cant go 4 crappy players like martins or kranjar, but we can go 4 barry, but i watched the intertoto cup last night and villa apluaded barry everytime he totched the ball, but a move 2 the gunners is still posible.
This is how i think arsenal will line up next season!!!
