Manchester United, whose chief executive, David Gill, has returned from holiday to take care of transfer business, were informed that they need to bid closer to £30m to sign the Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov.

An initial inquiry of £20m is understood to have been rebuffed. And although Spurs said they would not lower their valuation of £30m, a compromise may well be about to be reached of around £28m which would include a number of add-ons. (The Independent)

Manchester United are moving closer to bringing Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov to Old Trafford. While United have distanced themselves from reports claiming the clubs have agreed a £28 million fee for the Bulgarian, the parties are closing in on a deal for Berbatov.

While United are said to be unwilling to pay more than £25m, any potential deal could rival the £29.1m United paid Leeds for their record-signing Rio Ferdinand, in 2002. (Daily Telegraph)

The signs are all pointing to a very imminent deal between the two clubs for the impressive Bulgarian. Obviously there is a fair bit of haggling to do but both parties want the deal ironed out before pre-season friendlies get into full swing. Most reports suggest that the final figure will indeed break United’s previous transfer record and a move of such size will surely make up for the potential loss of traitorous Ronaldo!
