The £20m player that could lead Liverpool nearer to title dream!
by Mr Comfort on July 15th, 2008This scuppered deal could well turn out to be one failed transfer that Rafa is thankful for!
Juventus appear to have ended their interest in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.
Alonso has been linked with a move away from Anfield, with the Old Lady strongly linked with a swoop.
However, it has been reported that talks between the Serie A giants and The Reds have stalled.
On Monday, the Bianconeri finalised the signing of Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen from Sevilla, sparking rumours that their interest in Alonso had come to an end. (Sky Sports)
Make no mistake, Xabi Alonso is a fantastic player, most at Anfield already know this of course, but others may doubt just how good a midfielder he really is. Benitez’s insistence on securing an increased bid from Serie A giants Juventus may well be a blessing in disguise. Last season was one to forget for the Spaniard, although towards its completion, the 26-year-old was getting back into his stride.
Now with a European Championship medal to his name, I expect the former Real Sociedad man to excel. The £20m-rated Liverpool hero may have a point to prove to his boss, who seemed ready and willing to cash in on his services.
Of course Rafa has faith in the player, he was one of the first players he ever signed, now it is for Xabi to prove to his fellow Spaniard that he is player whom the club can ill-afford to offload. Do Anfield supporters believe that the inability to reach a deal with Claudio Ranieri could work in the club’s favour?

Alonso is the £20m man? Haha.
Juve didn’t even want to pay £14m.
He needs to go.

yid joke
jobby - July 15th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
mmmmm…dont know about our xabi. scored some amazing goals in his time at anfield, for sure. But is he the throatcutting, fight in the trenches type of player we crave?…..i tend to agree with rafa
Magnumopus - July 15th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Over rated for me…
Kingy Da Red - July 15th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Personally, I am made up Alonso is staying, the man is pure class. As for the Barry deal, I hope that is now dead in the water. No disrespect to Gareth Barry at all, the lad can play well but I just don’t see the point in selling Alonso and buying Barry for more, he will offer us no more than what we currently have. Roll on August 16th, I’m bored with all the talk let’s see some action.
Lemitris - July 15th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Alonso is a world class player…Juve tried to snatch him for 14mils because he had a rather mediocre season due to injuries…if this season is for him like the ‘04 - ‘05 or the ‘06 -’07 campaign next summer he’ll be rated more than 20mils…will he have a good season though?i hope Rafa will convince him to prove and improve himself…YNWA!!!
Lemitris - July 15th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I agree on the Xabi part Kingy…But if Rafa wants Barry to play a system such as:
Pepe
Skrtel Carra Agger
Degen(?) Dossena
Masch StevieG Barry
Babel
Torres
Then i think we can spare Robbie Keane and sign Barry.
(I’m starting to like the idea of that system…)
Rafa - July 15th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Mr Comfort - full of shit as usual
live 4 LFC - July 15th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I agree if you compare alonso to barry in the last 3-4 seasons there isnt much between them apart from alonso has that little bit of class so im happy with the barry deal not going through hopfully. we need wingers and a striker.. id like to see silva bentley berbatov santa cruz ribery or villa any of the above id rather see at anfield than barry next season. cant wait for season to start mascherano/torres/and babel will be even better this year..
Rob Barron - July 15th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
No way is it good news that the Alonso sale has fallen through, no matter how good he is or otherwise.
The fact is, we have got Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Lucas Leiva and so on. Our midfield is NOT a problem, only the wings are an issue. Personally I think there has been an issue for a while with Gerrard and Alonso not quite clicking in the way we need our central midfield pairing to do. Gerrard feels he would be able to create a much better parntership with Gareth Barry who he knows well and has played with at England level.
There are always people who argue the toss about an individual but the players who are of most worth are always the ones who form part of a coherent team that works really well together. When Alonso did play last season, a lot of balls through the middle went astray because his passing and timing were both out of sorts. We would HOPE he gets that sorted this year but there is no guarantee that would happen.
Yes, Alonso has been off to the Europeans and won a medal but let’s be honest, it wasn’t because he played fantastically well. He came on as a substitute but wasn’t a first choice player. I am delighted that he won the title, made up for him. But to suggest this is a sign that he is back to his best and ready to do the business for us is simply not true.
Our need for a top-notch striker and/or winger far exceeds our need for him in midfield so we should let him go, find someone willing to pay the £14m that Juve would have paid (they refused to go up to £16m but were ok with 14) and get the money in for a major signing like Robbie Keane.
I entirely wish Xabi all the very best if he goes, he has been a good servant to the club for the last few years. But I do not think he will make or break our season one way or the other.
chaz - July 15th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Keeping alonso is like taking one step backwards he needs to go
Scuzz McBoob - July 15th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Xabi is class. Glad he’s staying as worth more than Barry.
He played well for Spain in Euro’s as that is the first time he has played in an advanced midfield role for sometime.
You clowns don’t understand football do you unless you are spoonfed what’s going on?
Simon - July 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Its wingers we need not a change of personnel in the middle. Alonso is a superior player to Barry, he is a better passer, he covers more ground. You only have to look at the stats players have covered when we play Champions league games and Alonso covers more than the Masch.
Alonso is also a great tackler. Not in Masch’s class but he times his tackles and knows when to make them. You don’t often see him chasing players like Masch because he plays differently.
Get Silva and with the two attacking full-backs we have signed, the return of Agger, the long overdue absence of Riise and we will be a far better proposition than last season.
We finished strongly last season when we had Gerrard in that hole behind Torres. Play that from the beginning and we will get 80 plus points this season.
redfanred - July 15th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I’m not nearly complainin about Xabi staying. Arguably, the best passer of the ball in the Prem, the most productive through passes (esp for players comin in from the wings) superb goalscoring ability. I need some serious convincing that he’s not that good. And at the Euro, all I saw was a player getting back into his stride.
With a goalscoring winger like Ryan & possibly an improved Kuyt on the right, we shoul do great, great things. With Gillet and Hicks out, we will certainly achieve great things
OUT WITH THE YANKS!!!!!

…how could you write that team off winning the league next year? i’m not sayin we will but looks as good as ever (our biggest bonus next year wont be any signing, no matter how big, it will be the return of dani agger [please god] and having barry to rotate with alonso, likewise, arbeloa with degen, keane? with babel, dossena with aurelio depending on wat he’s like although i think aurelio might come good this season, and i’d love if nemeth pushed his way in for a few games next season.
ok I’M FINISHED!!!!
lfc - July 15th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
madfe up if he stays, for me alonso is pure class, possibly THE best passer of a ball in the premiership or is certainly up there.
still i am a fan of barry, but he isnt the type of player we should be after, for 18 million we could get silva.
personally i would love this to be our team next season

do we need kuyt n e more?
Jon G - July 15th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
To answer your question LFC (do we need kuyt n e more?)
No. No we don’t! It’ like i’m taking crazy pills. I’ve been saying all along that we need to get rid of him. We could get anywhere from 8-10 mil…take it and sign Bentley our silva. Shit with that money and the money from CL (20 mil) we could buy Villa. Hell, with what we got for crouch and the other slackers we sold we could even pick up Keane.
That’s right (Silva, Villa, and Keane)…get rid of Kuyt.
I’m starting a website (offwiththe70’spornstar.com or kuytmustgo.com)
Peace

You all who say Barry isn’t up to standard are possibly bigger muppets and more deluded than i believed. Barry offers so much more than Alonso. Any of you who watch Alonso must realise that all he is capable off is passing the ball across field and not froward!! Barry is capable of driving in and around the box. Look at the OPTA stats for the season if you aren’t sure. I feel it is absolutely necessary to sign Barry in order to compete fot the premier league.
tony - July 16th, 2008 at 1:05 am
swap him plus cash for aguero villa
Terry P - July 16th, 2008 at 2:59 am
Only sign barry if he is going to play in the center, dont sign him to play on the wing. i think barry would do a better job for us in the league than alonso would

Lets not forget that when he is playing well, Xabi is excellent. His passing range is fantastic and he can speed up and slow down the game making players play at his tempo….is that not a Liverpool player?
I like Xabi, my only gripe with him is for a centre midfielder he does not score enough goals. I appreciate he isnt there to score goals, but neither was flamini for Arsenal or Carrick/Hargreaves for Man U, but they all seem to net more than our Xabi
Big G - July 16th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
I’m glad with all the support that Xabi Alonso is getting because he truly is a class player!! He was plagued with injury last season and was playing to his full abillity! Although Barry is a good player Alonso is much better and younger!
Jon G leave Dirk alone he may miss plenty of chances and fuck things up from time to time but his workrate is outstanding he gives everything he’s got for the club and is proud to wear the shirt! Torres also said he would have scored so many goals without his work last season Rafa has turned his game from goal poching striker to link up creative midfield!! He does a good job so leave him alone!
Big G - July 16th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
That was meant to say wasn’t playing to his full abillity sorry!
Big G - July 16th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
and wouldn’t have scored so many goals!

alonso is class i expect a good season from him next season and im sure he will prove any doubters wrong he is the best passer in the prem forget barry he is good but but his price tag is a joke let arsenal have barry is half the player alonso is and should be half the price
bill - July 16th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
25 million man your having a laugh at least when Villa set a price for their player they stick to them.
Janindra - July 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
i think the player we really need now is a world class winger. you can play Babel as a second striker. Babel is aggressive, fast, and looks better than Voronin by far upfront with Torress. I think RAFA places wrong emphasis. He should get a winger as his priority.
