Man United boss confident of landing Tottenham striker – should he be?
by stresster on July 18th, 2008 249 words | 36 commentsSir Alex Ferguson is used to getting his own way. After all, Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have made a habit of tapping up a wide range of players before signing them from a smaller outfit. The Scot has confirmed that Dimitar Berbatov is firmly in his sights, what a prospect it would be to see a front line of the Bulgarian, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez!
Sky Sports reports that an offer has been made and that the Red Devils manager seems pretty bullish about his team’s chances of landing the forward.
“We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through,” he said as he jetted out with his player’s ahead of United pre-season tour of South Africa.
“Berbatov has been impressive during a long time and would be a great addition to our attack.
“I think time will work for us more than against us.
“We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future.”
It has been clear for some time that the English champions have been targeting Berbatov, although it is worth pointing out two things. Firstly, that Barcelona also appear to be in the chase for the player and secondly, that there appears to be some bad blood between Spurs and United, which dates back to when Michael Carrick arrived at Old Trafford. I wouldn’t expect the negotiations to be quick!

rather sell him to barcelona, apparantly they could be prepared to pay 27m for him and i would take that. if we are to make it into the big 4 we must not sell to our rivals. just look at the how difficult man u made it for hienze to join liverpool. we should follow their example and use it on them!
Brightonyid - July 18th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Typical Fergie shit, he expects us to roll over and take it up the a**e, the arrogance of the man is astounding, i would sell him to Barca for 25mil just to spite him.
Iowds - July 18th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Why are we suddenly a selling club, Berba and Keane. if we sell these two there best be two top quality replacements waiting. otherwise this club is going to become a pathetic waste of space like alot of the other clubs in the league.
FERGIEISAPRICK - July 18th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU BRIGHTONYID. HE IS SUCH A HYPOCRIT!! HEINZE AND RONALDO TO NAME TWO. MAYBE RONALDO HAS DECIDED THAT HE DOES WANT TO STAY, BUT THAT DOES NOT STOP FERGIE COMPLAINING AND LODGING A COMPLAINT WITH FIFA!! BUT IT’S FINE FOR HIM TO DO IT. IF WE ARE GOING TO LOSE BERBS, SELL HIM TO BARCA FOR LESS THAN MAN U OFFER JUST TO SPITE FERGIE.
dermo - July 18th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
ok,we all knew it was coming and now its rubberstamped.even though berba did not have a great season last year and his sulking has left a bitter taste i am still sick to my stomach at loosing a quality player but as with everything life goes on.the only real arguement now is who he will join, mancs or barca, and everything i own is on united.i know from reading our supporters comments on most blogs, the huge majority want to see him go abroad but lets look at it realistically,we for the foreseable future will not be challenging united so we should not worry ourselves if he goes there or not.if anything it could be a blessing as united will be so strong now + chelsea it will be hard to see arsenal winning much for a long time, well thats my silver lining on the whole issue.SPURS 4EVER.

I truely hope that the barcelona link is true and that ManUre loose out with Berbs then see Ronnie go out the door too! Perhaps that might wipe the smile off fergie’s face. ManUre do not have the financial clout that they used to have and of the top 4, without Ronnie could be the one of the top 4 to falter. If that comes at our expense that would be sweet. As for berbs, good riddance and I will look forward to seeing a player wear his shirt of equal or better quality and who actually wants to wear it!

Ramos - July 18th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
We should not sell Berba to United. I wouldnt mind if we accepted a 20 million bid from Barcelona and reject the 22 million from United. Fergie thinks he cando what evere he wants but starts crying when Madrid do it to him. Cant wait for Ronaldo to move to move to Madrid.
jj - July 18th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I hope levy turns and around and tells liverpool and man usa to kindly feck off! We should not be selling our strikeforce, that just so happens to be the most lethal strikeforce in the prem as the stats show.
Berba an keane should be told they are under contract and are not going anywhere, if they sulk tell them they will be placed in the reserves untill they grow up and honour there contracts. I cant see keane sulking but berba is a different story. We can not afford to sell both of these players and if one goes it should be berba NOT keane. An if i was Levy i would only sell to a club abroad, an barca would be my choice.
Trying to replace both keane and berba is impossible, try finding to top class strikers for the right money and getting there clubs to part with them..now there is the answer to our dilemma, ‘try getting clubs to part with them’ simple answer is other clubs dont want to sell there top players, blackburn have rejected the bentley deal, others will reject deals, they wont let there talent go..therefore we should have the same attitude! Levy surely can see the team is nearly there with a few more players. Selling the strikeforce is stepping back, so far we have bought in quality signings, what was the point in buying players like modric if we are to sell other top players like keane and berbatov. Its like one of those games where you hit one button down and another pops up! That is not a sign of ambition, nor a sign of a team wanting to establish themselves in a champions league spot!
Levy TAKE NOTE!!

“We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future.”
Would ” Suck our Fat ones Fergie!” constitute a “constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future.” ??????
Marc - July 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Why would Spurs sell Berba for £20m to the Red Nosed Alcoholic when Barca have lodged a bid of £24m today and Levy has said all along make us an acceptable offer (£30m) and you can speak to the player…..
Similar to Villa and Gareth Barry, Liverpool (who are skint) could not afford to offer what Villa wanted and therefore did not get to speka to the player……!!!!
And why would Keane want to warm the bench at Anfield (like Crouch did) and again I doubt they have enough money to afford to buy him….
leso - July 18th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Enough HotAir to Raise the titanic!! 30 m to you mr usa, good price for Barca to get stuck-in, BUT i hope he’s going NOWHERE!! COYS!! CODL,SCREW MAN USA, they only got 32M in total for winning chl, yet they are trying to buy the master for 22M, GO,GO,GO AND PLAY WITH THE TRAFFIC,RUDOLF!!

I thought Levy and Ramos agreed that they would sell Berba-sulk for £25m to teams abroad and £30m to teams in the Premiership. Fergie knows the score – stump up or f*ck off. We are not a feeder club for the top 4. If he is so in awe of him why didn’t he sign him when he was scouting him at Bayer Lev? Apparently, Fergie’s been watching him for 7 years – if I was Berbatov I’d want to know why the sudden interest – could it be that Fergie fears Spurs?

Sir Red Nose is not the only hypocrite. Most of the comments on here come from the same place. It is no secret that the top 4 indulge in not so secret tapping up through the media. This is a normal practice of top clubs in every country. Do you actually think that Barca, Real, Inter, AC etc do not do the same thing? They are the haves we are the have nots comparatively. The same applies in the lower levels. Look what we did to Palace for instance. We got THudd, Hutton, Bale and lots more from picking the bones of lower clubs.
Most of you that are moaning will be cheering when we reach the top 4 and do the same damn thing, so quit whining and understand the way the game is played. We cannot offer Berba and Keane CL football and we will be paid very nicely for them. Trust Ramos to replace them with younger, less esteemed players that will still allow us to compete with the top 4 and eventually we will be the ones poaching top players.
And then you will all forget your accusations that other clubs are stealing our players because it will benefit our club not someone elses.
genkiscain@hotmail.com - July 18th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Sell him to Barca just to show Fergie he can’t get everything he wants, would be happy to sell berba at discount rate just to shaft united, over-confidence always pisses me off, we don’t want to go selling deadly dimitar to any other squad in the EPL, he’ll come back to score against us and we really can’t be havin that. We must however keep keane, if it means buying his mum a nice new caravan by all means do so.
Berba was great for us, sad to see him go.
Messiah - July 18th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Wow a collection of the biggest idiotic Spurs fans are on this board, so bitter, you read about a bid in a newspaper and think it’s true, are you all inbred on this page or something? One Carling Cup and you think you’re the best team in England and top 4 beckons? You may have strengthened but you’ll be a selling club, you’re not good enough for the top 4 and that’s why last season you was no where near it, a few big money moves won’t solve your want-to-be-big-club mentality. Such a bitter bunch, get real and accept there are many many bigger clubs that your lot and your players will leave to actually further their career.

What difference does it make if he scores against us? We never beat them anyway. Screw him; let him go and hope he carries on sulking because Sir RN will not tolerate that and you can get the popcorn out to watch that sideshow.

mark my words pekhert will fill the void in a few years if berba goes. agree with scorpion we have done the same so its no different from what we did courting ramos it happens in football all the time .
billiospur - July 18th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
spurs has always been big club but dragged heels in forward vision in the past two decades when we did not make the same transition in investment into the current climate as others did with changes and other reasons falling behind in the financial stakes..etc..ground capacity etc (to be sorted)for the club wants its proper status …with Ramos and Co ….great
its where we belong…..but we need patience and stability….if berba goes
then goes against our plans but …..only for a while ….the players further their careers by joining THFC…..time to move on ……spurs need a real effort all round over the next two years and continue to build real depth ….
Drew Vader - July 18th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Spuds comparing this to the Real Ronaldo deal are complete fuck heads.
United have made an official bid for the player with Spurs management, have Real actually made a bid for ronaldo? No, they have not. That fucking cocksucker calderon just keeps running his fucking mouth.
Have united players come out and tapped him up in the media? No, they have not. But look at sneijder, (i know he recently changed his tune but before that he was talking about how great it would be to play with him), Robinho, Henize and a few others have all publicly said shit about Ronaldo.
Have spurs come out and said flat out that Berba is not for sale? No, they have not. How many times has fergie or david gill said that about ronaldo? And yet fuckface Calderon just ignores it and wont shut up about it.
Look, it sucks you arent in the champions league and United is, and i understand the frustration, but as Scorpion said, thats just the way it is. BUT, united/Berba and Real/Ronaldo are apples and oranges. So get that straight.
Scorpion - July 18th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Drew Vader: It’s not apples and oranges. The practice of tapping players up by dropping “secret” info to the media is commonplace. Sir RN is a master at the art. Here’s how it goes. Sir RN asks an inked stained wretch to ask him a question; like would you like to have Berbatov in your team? Sir RN says of course he is a great player, anyone would like him in your squad bit I can’t comment further because he is under contract to another team. Scumbag agent then announces to the world that ManU are “in” for Berbatov. All hell breaks loose, and rumors abound that Berba is going to ManU. And the merrygoround begins. It’s unofficial legal tapping up. I’m not saying Spurs don’t do it because I know we do. What I’m saying is the rules have to change. A contract is in fact a contract, but in fact now it is accepted practice that a player who has a great year can now use this practice to shake up a move that betters himself, not football and certainly not the supporters paying the freight for all these guys. Platini has some bizarre ideas to clean up the game, but here is one area that can be cleaned up very easily. If you are under contract, you or your mouthpiece are not allowed to discuss moving in any public forum. Penalty being you are suspended for one year. If any club makes any comment to any media representative they will be subject to a fine equivalent to 50% of any transfer fee involving that player if he is acquired by the offending party.
Don’t you find it obscene that Luton town can be pretty much run out of football by a 30 point penalty created by a previous administration, yet blatant breaking of rules amongst the big money teams is ignored?
It’s simple. We all know who is running football in this country and it is not those that pretend to.
cobra - July 18th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
fellow spurs fans our chairman will never sell to manure now,
read this
LATEST NEWS
Chairman speaks out
There has been substantial speculation in respect of the futures of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, including press comment from both Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez. In response our Chairman, Daniel Levy has made the following statement:
“Today’s public comments by Manchester United’s manager, announcing that he has made an offer for Dimitar and is confident that the deal will go through with time working in their favour, is a blatant example of sheer arrogance and interference with one of our players. It is also probably one of the worst offences by any manager in the Premier League to date and is unbelievably hypocritical given his recent comments in respect of Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid.
“This comes after a series of events, dating back to last summer, which have shown Manchester United to be in breach of Premier League (PL) rules. As a result, we have today made an official complaint to the PL about the conduct of Manchester United. Benitez made similar comments in respect of Robbie recently and we made an official complaint to the PL about the conduct of Liverpool earlier this week.
“The behaviour of both clubs has been disgraceful. We told both clubs very early on that we had no interest in selling Robbie or Dimitar, respectively, and that they should refrain from pursuing the player. Both clubs arrogantly chose to ignore this request and we now have evidence that both clubs have systematically been working to prise the players away from us, outside of PL rules of conduct.
“Our subsequent position has been severely compromised by both clubs making their intentions widely known and indeed making contact with the players and their agents, without the Club’s permission.
“I have absolutely no wish to sell either player and to date we have not accepted any offer for either. However, when a player’s head is turned and their commitment is absent, particularly when they occupy key positions such as that of striker, they become a negative influence in a team dressing room in which they were once a positive addition and influence. This is the situation we now have on our hands, with both Dimitar and Robbie having made it clear that they wish to leave for Manchester Utd and Liverpool respectively.
“Irrespective of the outcome and futures of Robbie and Dimitar, we are continuing to seek to bring in quality, talented players for the future, who want to play in a Spurs shirt.”
our chairman has had enough of this under handed action by both managers, and told both clubs they are being reported to the pl for unsettling our players, he told them both to go away, and forget about these players, but they didnt care, and went ahead, and did what they liked, punishment must be administered to these clubs, and our chairman will demand it, he has had enough, we will never do business with these two clubs now, our chairman never intended to sell these 2 players, the papers, the clubs the agent all lied to our fans, how can this go on, it must stop.
Bill - July 18th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Unfortunately Cobra, in the statement Levy said that Keane and Berbatov wanted to leave. I think personally that they are two brilliant players, but Berbatov in my opinion is a mercenary, and just used us as a stepping stone to get to where he wanted to be, and Keane realised that he could get into the Champions league quicker with Liverpool. I think that Keane will b regarded with a degree of affection by the Spurs fans, but Berbatov will be given unmerciful stick should he decide to show his face at the lane again. 45 million is enough to get a good striker, why dont we stick it all on Tevez, and fuck the Scottish cunt right off.
leso - July 18th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Evidence to show both clubs talking to respective agents without permission. Not only do these clubs think that the rules don’t apply to them, they also think they can pay what they like too. Well done DL well over due REDNOSE has marked his card with the EPL now with his outcry at the Ronaldo situation stating he’s under contract and won’t be sold. Permission is important as are the rules now what the suits goona do about it 2X20k fines!! Scorpion, its not the same. We never tapped up anyone, nor have we broken the rules !! all our purchases are above board.
Scorpion - July 18th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
We have done it on a more subtle level with lower profile players, but it’s still the same thing. Making players turn their head to further their careers and to hell with contracts and commitment.
I have no faith that Levy’s comments will result in anything but at least he has gone public with them. This needs to be addressed by the FA and dealt with very assertively. Why sign contracts if they aren’t worth the paper they are written on?
A major overhaul is needed, otherwise the top 4 will remain that way as will the middle 8.
