Should Spurs fans be worried? Manager hints that lethal strikeforce could be on their way…
by stresster on July 18th, 2008 252 words | 14 commentsLosing Dimitar Berbatov this summer will be a blow to Tottenham Hotspur, but an exit which won’t come as a major surprise to many of the fans. While there was always a glimmer of hope that the Bulgarian might be kept at White Hart Lane, it now appears as though a bid from Manchester United, so poorly disguised it had its own comic strip, not only confirms that at least one club are interested, but also they are pretty determined to land their man.
However, the Daily Mirror doesn’t make for happy reading today (does it ever?), reporting that Juande Ramos, Tottenham’s great Spanish hope seems to be preparing for Robbie Keane’s departure as well. With Liverpool rumoured to be in the hunt for the Irishman, Spurs fans will have been hoping for words of defiance from their gaffer. Instead they get this:
He said: “We’ll see how it will all end, but we are talking about two very important footballers. At the moment they’re with us but what will happen, will happen.
“People have to understand that this is a club that is on the stock market, a company that has to give accounts at the end of the day.”
Say it ain’t so, is Juande resigned to losing the pair who boshed in 50 goals for Tottenham last season? These exits would surely leave the North London club in a veritable pickle, perhaps Darren Bent will get his chance after all! Has the pre-season optimism already started to fade a jot for Spurs fans?

Can only agree with Davspurs.
I think Spurs may lose the two players-but it will still remain within the choice of our manager.Ramos has a plan and will only allow these deals to happen if he can keep progressing.

To lose Berbatov would be unlucky, to lose Keane as well would be remiss

Losing both Berbatov and Keane would undoubtedly hurt Tottenham’s chances, but Ramos is a bright manager and I’m sure he could find adequate replacements considering both would haul in transfer fees over 20m.

Berba i can take..but sell him to Barca.
Keane too and i wont be a happy man!
Keane has to stay!!! I still have a strong feeling that ramos is not stupid enough to sell both of our strikers! I hope!

I would be disappointed to see them both leave this summer.
But I do feel that Ramos is working to a master plan that can succeed without them.
Firstly, he appears to favour a 4-5-1 which is very attacking, but with all of the midfield, in particular, operating a high-tempo, closing-down game, which makes defending from the front very effective. This system would operate best with one predatory forward leading the line. This would, perhaps, buypass Berbabtov, whereas Keane, who is naturally suited to dropping deep would basically be a midifelder, but would not be suited to being an out-and-out goal-getter. Perhaps, in the long run it would be better buying another all out attacking midfielder now – though in Keane’s case I would be inclined to wait. Ironically, this system may actually suit the much (and unfairly) maligned Darren Bent (and, from reports, Tomas Peckhart, in the long term).
Secondly, allowing, if the above argument is accepted, that this system may be viable, and that, therefore, the loss of these two players could be compensated for, that would be a shed load of cash for strengthening. JR stated so many times that he wanted a far more creative midfield. Imagine, with the 4o odd million we should get for this pair (if they are sold), plus other sales, plus any funds we ahve at this precise moment, we could put in hefty bids for Capel and Bentley (both of whom score and create goals), and have a hefty chunk left for a back-up central defender of quality and maybe a top notch defensive midfielder. How doea that sound?

Not bad Sean, provided the front man does not get isolated and then we just lump it forward, as we’ve all seen that happen before.

Spurt – yes, we have seen it happen – with Wimbledon :-O
I take your point, but believe that that is primarily a failing of defensive minded coaches, aware of the attacking limitations of their midfield.
These are not issues I believe affect JR.
As we saw in the CC final – he is incredibly bold, and fully committed to attacking football -without the niaivity of Ossie Ardiles – I hope
He also appears to be targeting top quality offensive midfielders who can also ‘put their foot in’.
