Arsenal to bid for £16m midfield maestro: Could be perfect Flamini replacement!
by Mr Comfort on July 19th, 2008Arsene Wenger looks to trump Liverpool by winning the race for Aston Villa’s skipper!
With Arsenal now lacking in the defensive midfielder department, and considering Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill’s admission that the Gunners had been in contact, is a bid for Gareth Barry in the offing?
Aston Villain, Gareth Barry, once a respected captain with the midlands club, may now struggle to look his head coach, Martin O Neill, in the eye considering his outbursts toward the Northern Irishman over the summer. The midlands club remain rigid on their asking price for the England international. Meanwhile speculation concerning Liverpool’s initial interest has died down. Instead, Arsenal have emerged as contenders for the utility man’s signature. (goal.com)
Gareth Barry has gone back to training at the midlands club even though he has almost certainly played his last game for the club. Comments made to a tabloid some weeks ago appear to have been a death knell to his long distinguished Aston Villa career however Liverpool apparently haven’t got the funds for a move as they have not managed to offload Xabi Alonso, hence the arrival of Arsenal on the scene. Wenger is clearly looking to beef up his midfield and in many ways Barry could be a perfect addition, he is a player at his peak and someone who could ably replace Mathieu Flamini in the Emirates midfield. Do Gunners fans see the England man as a player who could make an impact in north London?

Flamini will be missed (even though he treated the club like shit), Barry would work i think but not sure Arsene would bid more than 10m for him
Lord Arsenal - July 19th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
No thanks. Barry is slow and average in the tackle. We believe in meritocracy not English affirmative action.
Alonso for 3m from Liverpool.
Andreas - July 19th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
I’d prefer to buy xavi alonso from liverpool and let liverpool buy gareth barry!!
Alonso and fabregas in midfield would be quality
Eduardo - July 19th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
just miguel veloso
Arsenal1Again - July 19th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Alonso is too similar to Fabregas and besides he’s more attacking than defensive. Garath Barry is solid, he holds the Midfield and he’s defensive …. which gives Cesc more freedom.
With both Alonso and Fabregas in Midfield, it wouldn’t be quality. It would be a straight run at our defence.

Why would u allow Flamini to go bcos u wouldn’t increase his wages by 5k but u go out and spend 17mil on a replacement + his wages. doesn’t make any sense. I keep telling yall - Wenger has lost the plot!!
Dan - July 19th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Raúl Albiol
LEON - July 19th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Diaby!
Wolf - July 19th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
xabi alonso, he can hold back wen needed and can shoot from distance
he can even score from the halfway mark…
gunnerfan - July 19th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
i think that wenger shouldn’t buy gareth barry cuz he’s expensive and hes not in the scheme wenger should prolly buy a younger player or prolly just use diaby as diaby isn’t good at attking but can take far shots and hes got long legs which helps
Munz - July 19th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Yeah i agree eduardo barry is shit… Rather get veloso
Leo - July 19th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I refer Alonso to Barry, because Alonso is a perfect player with speed and accurate passes and prolific shoot. We need him. Wenger the Great Manager!!! We love u
Dan - July 19th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Pay per view, the reason he would rather bring someone in for 17 million + wages is because if he’d given flamini more money, just because he wanted more the rest of the team would go to wenger and say well if flamini gets a pay rise, then i want a pay rise. if he gave every1 a pay rise it would be alot more than 17 million.
Student of wenger - July 19th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
whats all this alonso bullshit? firstly hes a possesion specialist just like cesc not a defensive midfielder, and secondly hes not even a good possesion specialist, hes a long ball merchant and doesnt have the speed of play or vision required of an arsenal attacking midfielder unlike cesc, so why the fuck would we need him? I dont think we need to buy Barry for this role as its a glorified running and tackling role with little creative skill involved, wenger moulded flamini to the player he is in that position and i trust he can do it again without spending silly money! I suspect song is in wengers plans for this role, some of you guys dont have a clue considering your Arsenal fans, get with the wenger way already!
WILBURG FROM LIBERIA - July 19th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
boss wenger pls buy big names.b dont buy under pay player.u r nt under pay.we need classes of player.we want to win cups
Arsenal forever - July 20th, 2008 at 3:35 am
Wenger should sign Ryo Yee from Malaysia. He only 23 years old. He is very versatile player and very good in tackle plus his got pace + non stop stamina. He can defend very well, if we need to score. he also can score because he is very good in air. He is a very dangerous man when we gor a corner or set- piece.
Wenger, please consider this talented young man that can win everything for Arsenal. Another advantage of him is he is very loyal and he will commit future in Arsenal for his whole career. He is not greedy at all. Overall he is fantastic player.
Dirk Kuyt's Next-Door Neighbor - July 20th, 2008 at 3:47 am
The asking price is £18m, not £16m. If it was 16, a deal would already have been agreed with Liverpool. There’ve been enough stories about this by now so that you should know THAT.
ruprec - July 20th, 2008 at 5:11 am
we dont need big names, players become big names at arsenal. all of our current stars were nothing when they came but they grew at arsenal. though still i wouldnt mind this deal add a bit of depth to our midfield. however arsene has said that he’s probalbly gonna put faith in our youngsters and that ramsay could be dropping back as a more holding centre midfielder, i guess time will tell. later bitches
blake - July 20th, 2008 at 6:50 am
y would AW buy barry 4 16 mil when he can buy veluso 4 20 mil he can 4mil from hleb deal towards it veluso is younger and will improve
but its up 2 wenger

IM A GUNNER TILL THE DAY I DIE BUT IF WE WANT TO WIN TROPHIES WENGER MUST BRING IN SOME EXPERIENCED PLAYERS TO ADD DEPTH TO OUR YOUNG SQUAD..
scottpuffin - July 20th, 2008 at 8:27 am

arsenal 4evr - July 20th, 2008 at 10:35 am
velloso is the perfect answer to flamini’s departure… and wenger after the game against barnet has stated that arsenal are still in the market and wud be buying some more talented players if possible…
he has already set sight on velloso… its being widely believed tat arsenal’s next move is for werder bremen’s 21 year old midfielder amaury bischoff… he is supposed to come in on free transfer i guess.. then maybe if the price is right wenger might push for velloso… also the mercenary adebayor is staying so we might as well 4get our dreams of seeing t likes of huntelaar, eto’o n santa cruz in a red n white shirt atleast for this season…
things look optimistic and in the game against barnet our reserves showed great character… nacer barazite cud be pushin for a spot in the regulars squad the way he’s playing… and the other’s aint fairing badly either…
but i believe tat arsenal’s trump card next season wil be aaron ramsey… depending on the way he’s played by wenger… (I atleast hope ramsey is used as a winger instead of eboue)
cheers…
big phil - July 20th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
buy yaya!!! bro with kolo. he is a good defensive midfielder to replace flamini, he is a good passer and can make some runs too. it could cost a lot, but a good investment.
pay-per-view - July 20th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I think wenger is the worst manager in the top 4 look at what he has won in the last 3 years compared to the other 3. HE IS USELESS!!!!!!! Bring in Martin Jol a real quality manager who nearly got spuds in the top 4 that is top management

Gareth - July 20th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
The simple fact is that Diaby will slot in. Why do people keep going on about Flamini’s replacement.
Summary:
NO REPLACEMENT FOR FLAMINI - DIABLY WILL REPLACE.
Wenger will NOT spend a club record fee on gareth Barry - LMAO. Can somebody say why he would do that? This is a prime example on why he doesn’t buy established English players - BECAUSE THEY ARE STUPIDLY GREEDY! He can buy an establshed international for around 10m or an England fringe player for 18m? You dont have to be a football dirrector to work out them maths.
Gunner4life - July 20th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Pay per view is clearly a spud fan, y would we replace wenger with jol after u said it urself, he nearly got spuds into the champs league. That is exactly wot i want from a manager. someone who would need loads of money to nearly get my team into the top 4.
LondonGooner - July 21st, 2008 at 8:57 am
Why would u allow Flamini to go bcos u wouldn’t increase his wages by 5k ????? What are you talking about? Flamini wanted nearer the region of £80k pw! So you reckon he was on £75per week before that? Yeah right!
Groomy - July 21st, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I cant believe we are even thinking about regreting selling flamini! He didnt ever score, he shot wide, and just did passes that even i could do! Barry aint perfect, but hes ENGLISH and hes decent. Barry is far better than diaby, as diaby has one foot! Yes he defends, but Barry does it better! If diaby was even slightly decent, he would get into his national squad AT LEAST ONCE. Im all for barry and am all for flamini leaving, i would have given him 20k a week AT THE MOST. If wenger doesnt start making more signings, then he MUST go!
