Liverpool to make HUGE move for £24m star: This would be Rafa’s best ever signing!
by Mr Comfort on July 19th, 2008According to this source if a move for Robbie Keane fails then Rafa will line up the mother of all big signings!
Samuel Eto’o could make a surprise move to Liverpool if the Premier League club fail in their bid to prise Robbie Keane away from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Cameroonian striker is being offered to Europe’s major clubs and many have already previously made contact to ask about his annual salary and transfer fee. While all those enquiries have failed to lead to a single concrete offer, Barça are determined to sell Eto’o this summer and may lower their demands in the coming weeks.
That would allow Liverpool to make their move and Rafa Benítez believes that the powerful 27-year-old could form an incredible partnership alongside Fernando Torres.
Liverpool would be a destination that could attract Eto’o, however, and the promise of Champions League football is the key thing in his list of priorities of any would-be suitor. (goal.com)
24m rated Eto’o is quite simply one of the deadliest strikers on the planet but one who Barcelona appear to be keen to offload, hence a valuation which is surprisingly cheap for a player who is still only 27 and scores goals for fun. There may not be a better instinctive finisher on the planet and one can only marvel at what kind of pairing the Cameroonian would make alongside Fernando Torres! As an example of just how incredible Samuel is, last season one where his side struggled greatly to keep up with Bernd Schuster’s rampant Real Madrid side, Eto’o started just 18 games in La Liga and managed an astonishing 16 goals! A move to Liverpool could be just what the former Champions League winner is looking for, a new challenge with a team who can offer him a shot at glory at the highest level. Arsenal were also said to be interested, as were Spurs (until Eto’o pointed out that he didn’t see such a move as a possibility). AC Milan were also considering a move but now that they have just landed Ronaldinho one would imagine cash may not be available for another big signing. So maybe this dream signing could be more of a reality than some would believe. Do Liverpool fans think this would constitute the best signing in years, even better than the capture of El Nino?

Imagine Eto’o and Torres! We would be unstoppable, also i agree with you we are definite candidates for his signature!
Soggy Biscuit - July 19th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Cant deny the bloke is an awesome striker and is probably the best goal scorer in world football at the moment..But you have to ask why are Barcelona getting rid of him? Hes only 27 so should be at his peak as a player yet the fact Barca are trying to off load him suggests theres problems with him. We hear rummours in the press about his attitude and that hes a bit of a diva, and then theres the fact that he’d wanna be on 100k plus and you have to wonder what sort of effect he’d have on the dressing room..Also you cant just chuck 2 world class strikers togther and expect them to form a world class partnership, Torres clearly played better last season as a lone striker with Gerrard playin behind him than he did as 1 of a forward 2..I think this is the reason Rafa has been showing interest in Keane as he is 1 f the best there is in the support striker role..I’d clearly love it if we signed Eto, a big superstar signing but even tho it sounds a lot less glamourous I think Keane is the perfect partner for Torres.
wewanttheprem - July 19th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
get him plz would be awsome signing
then we would defo kick the dirty manc scums asses
Joe - July 19th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Eto’o and Torres would be an unbelieveable partnership. Hopefully Eto’o would be able to quickly settle into the English style. I hope we can generate the funds necessary to obtain him, but until Xabi is gone we may not have the money.

Where do you get this crap? you should be barred !
Mack - July 19th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
I’d love Eto as partner to Torres, he is younger than Keane and he is simply leathel as a striker. I watched Barca last season and he simply is awesome, even though he had an injury plagued season.
Buy Eto and Silva, then we could be contenders for the title.
Stephen - July 19th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Shadda legendary comment!
Have to agree with soggy biscuit. He must have some serious attide problems if barca are wanting to get rid of him so badly. Think keane and torres would make a better partnership, but come on,who would say no to signing eto’o if the opportuntiy presented itself!?
If he does come,i would assume rafa would give him a shake down and put his feet firmly on the floor. I’m sure carra would chip in with his 5 pence worth aswell!
Stephen - July 19th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
meant to say “attitude problems” there.
Noblelox - July 19th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Rafa would drink his own piss before buying an ego the size of Eto. Barca are trying to sell him as if he is a plague carrier. He would destroy the team spirit of whatever team he moved to. Let Man Citeh buy him, maybe the crystals under the pitch and the three legged toads will cure him of his arrogance and big fat head.
CY - July 19th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
In my humble opinion, Samuel Eto is probably the top 3 striker partners for Torres at this instance. My reason for citing this is simple.
Eto has lethal finishing prowess, and Torres shows how good a supplier he can be in his link up with David Villa.
Conversely, if one has watched Barcelona play one would be quick to point out that Barcelona plays an extremely swift passing style of football much akin to Arsenal and Eto, being part of the set up that dominated 2 seasons ago has undoubted passing abilities and vision that allowed him to be able to fit into the fluid game alongside Ronaldinho, Messi and Xavi.
So either way, both can supply and finish off each other’s assists and no doubt this would reap a huge amount of goals especially with Stevie G behind the 2 stringing through balls allover the field.
Eto is also a very strong player and has exhibited tenecitiy despite his relative small build and therefore I am certain to say that the physical aspect of the English game would not hinder his play if anything he might actually thrive on it.
Lastly Eto has pace, which is something other strikers such as Robbie Keane do not, and is vital in a fast paced game in England.
Therefore, LFC would benefit a great deal should Rafa shows hand and gambles his transfer kitty on Eto. Of course nobody can ever say for certain how good Eto can fit in, but look at Torres, we need big big super stars, not above average household names like Keane to make LFC a force to be truly reckoned with across Britain and Europe.
Ben - July 19th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
yes that would be excellent! him and torres would be deadly!
lfc4life - July 19th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
i personally dont believe that Eto and Torres can produce a brilliant partnership, this is because they are both similar players we need someone who likes to drop deeper into the hole between defence and midfield of the opposition. Dont get me wrong i rate Eto, but i dont think he is the right man for the job. keane would be the ideal partner for torres.
has everyone forgot that we really need, wingers and i am even more convinced havin seen the lack of width supplied from either of the new full backs, i know its early but still we need more width
WINGERS are NEED !
Stephen - July 19th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
CY your mostly right in your assesment. Nobody’s doubting eto’o’s quality, its his attitude that is in question and the reasons why barca want to offload him so eagerly.
Keane is much better than you give him credit for. I mean for spurs he’s got 80 goals in 195 appearances. Thats nearly 1 in 2 games!
And the guys been playin in the prem for years!
I’d be happy with either of them signing.
YNWA - July 19th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Soggy Biscuit
This wise man knows his stuff. in my opinion i would much rather us sign Keane, he would fit far better into the team, Eto would be too much of a financial burden in my opinion.
CY - July 19th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Hi Stephen, I agree with you that Keane is good. My only concern is that he might not be good enough to win us the title. We probably need someone as good as Torres to bridge the gap that we currently have between Chelsea and Man U.
Regarding Eto, I doubt hes gonna make it to Anfield this is just a silly rumour thread but I think Eto is a true professional and part of the reason he lost his motivation to play in Spain was reportedly due to alot of racial abuse hurled his way but in English i guess that aspect is not as menacing as in La liga so I wouldnt worry too much for whichever club that signs him.
piterechu cedric - July 19th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
i think the chase for robbie keane should end right away and if possible more players should be sold to increase the price for eto’o
eto’o ,torres, gerard and babel will make the team the best
galorefc - July 19th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
wohoho…24m ..thats a lot….who else should we dispose ??? my grandma?? biatch…
Stephen - July 19th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Yeah forgot about all the racial stuff. But besides,a club like barca should be seen to make a stance on stuff like that. They should be holding onto a player who is discriminated against and making a point to supporters in the county. Besides all that eto’o is a fantastic player,so why do they want to get rid of him?
Can anybody give me a real logical reason for than?
Anyway,we need more than keane(or JUST another striker for that matter) to bring us the title CY.
Aside from a quality proven goalscorer we badly need at least two wingers(can see babel playing a more central role as either striker or support strike and kuyt just doesn’t cut it for me,his end product is woofle!) and i can only hope cavaleiri is gonna challenge reina, because in my opinion, humble it is not, reina is very dodgy. Especially from aerial ballsa.
Was checking sky sports and levy is quoted as saying that both berba and keane have expressed a desire to leave for liverpool and the manc’s respectadly.
meson1 - July 19th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
As a footballer Eto’o is undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the world and he could walk into any of the top teams in the world and do a job. I’d love him to play for us as Liverpool.
BUT… (and it’s a huge “but” - no sniggering at the back) 1. I don’t think Rafa does prima-donnas 2. his wage demands would be too much and 3. I don’t believe the link anyway.
So, love to be proven wrong on all three points, but I’m afraid it’s just not gonna happen.
Mack - July 19th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
A close friend of mine who follows Barca closly says that the reason to offload Eto is just for making a restart after Rijkaard. Ronaldinho was sold because of plaguing the team with his ego. Deco had lost his motivation, and Eto was put on the transfer list because he in public told what was going on at Barca, then falling out with Rijkaard.
Guaridola has steeped in and wants to make a major averhaul, cleaning out all that possibly could associate with the past that stopped them from delivering the trophies they deserve. Eto is a true professional and would really be the great partner to Torres.
Bring Eto and Silva and we are in it for the title
(yes we really need wingers - and one more top notch striker)

Gdarmo - July 20th, 2008 at 12:13 am
I’ve heard Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto earned themselves bad reputations at Barca last year by adopting a “spice boys” party attitude, and they spent a lot of time getting pissed up whilst their form on the pitch took a nosedive….

totally agree with jon g, why suddenly rafa has a lot of wish lists that we don’t actually need ?? i do think that torres will do just fine without a new partner there, we need players that can play from wings, to add depth and new strategy there…. winger needed…
Jonas - July 20th, 2008 at 1:07 am
as much as i’d love 2 see a superstar like eto’o in the red jersey, i would have to admit that i think keane would be the best partner for torres (with the money we’ve got). But i agree on the fact that we need wingers most of all. silva, maxi rodriguez etc. also i think this rumour is bollocks. don’t tink they r interrested in eto’o. what’s next? Djibril Cisse, Gudjohnson or maybe Christian Vieri? Any of those would be AMAZING. what do Liverpool fans think about the prospect of signing any of those superstars?

NO, NO, NO! not the type of character rafa’s after.
he’s not going to sweat blood for the team
he’s not going to sit on the bench and be happy if we play 4-2-3-1
he’s not going to take less than £80K per week
he’s not going to be happy when pacheco & nemeth’s time comes to play
i don’t know, maybe i’ve read the guy all wrong, but he would seem to me to be the only sulker rafa ever bought!
hemanta - July 20th, 2008 at 1:54 am
this is just crap
we are struggling to get fund for keane or barry and we are talking about even costier player or shall I say a plague for moral.
even if we are geting him then it won’t do good on moral for he’s the kind of player who gets ‘boo’ed by his own fan.so I would not buy him.and we need a couple of quality wingers and then we can play bable along side torress(where’s the striker crisis now?)and 2 wingers won’t cost as much as one piece of shit.lets go for joaquin

Okay let’s go through Mr Comfort’s catchphrases Sentences are for chumps, long words are needless, sorry I’m paraphrasing here and I can’t be arsed looking as I’ve been on a good night out. However you get the theme sum it up in 6 words is Mr Comfort’s mantra. However life can rarely be summed up in 6 words but here’s one Mr Comfort steals other people’s stories. This was on goal.com earlier (on saturday). Now let’s look Pep the new Barca manager wants rid, why? He knows the club inside out and he’s had enough of Deco, Ronaldinho and Etoo, I wonder why? Is it that their ego’s are to big for the dressing room harmony that every succesful team needs. And this by the way Mr Comfort if your mind span can complete 2 sentences (Something I seriously doubt) would make Etoo a huge gamble, something Rafa is not known for. Neither by the way is Fergie or Wenger so why don’t you do something useful and stop spreading useless bullshit. E-mail if you have a problem you have my e-mail but I doubt you will cause even when I pissed my intellect is far superior to yours you infintile moron.

I’d rather Crouch than keane any day
“This is the difference between Man U and us at the moment they are after Berbatov and we are after Keane”
__________________________________________________
Well said. This is why we cant compete. A real financial strategy for Rafa would be to either get the best or not sign at all. Maybe if we are really as short up on cash as the Americans portray us to be then perhaps a smart move would be to not spend any money now and save whatever pathetic 10 - 15 million we have in the transfer kitty and blow it all next year with the new revenue we get during the coming season to buy a 30 million player like Aguero and count on him to make an impact like Torres.
The current way things are going: Rafa is bringing in decent players every year like Pennant/Benayoun/Arbeloa/Kuyt but quantity doesnt really help against the top teams because you need quality above a certain threshold to score goals against John Terry/Ferdinand etc.
The real heart break comes from the fact that our American owners SUCK and refuse to roll out the cash. Rafa has to scrimp and save and in the end we have enough squad players to cover for 2 teams but lack real super stars.
Im not sure if anyone noticed but Steven Gerrard’s age will be catching up soon and hes a lucky man if he can maintain his form for another 3 years or max 5.
In that sense if Liverpool wants to win anything they better win it within this 3-5 years or we would have lost Gerrard and along with him any chances of the title should the financial circumstances remain unchanged every summer.
The skipper’s put his whole career in for LFC and i think he really deserves a title medal, don’t you?
Janindra - July 20th, 2008 at 6:06 am
i think this news is groundless. it is good for liverpool to be linked with Eto’s. but i don’t think that it will happen. if you base your rumours on another rumour in the paper, we will all get crazy one day. if you want to be more professional, get the interviews by Rafa or the Club to support your rumours. liverpool has been in shortage of money because the yanks donot want to provide money enough for big signing, what you can do is to sign some mediocre players instead. David Villa, Samuel Eto’s, Robinho, Kaka, etc. are beyond the reach of liverpool.
Yes, you are going to sign Keane for some 20m pounds but ManU are going to sign Berbatov for 30m pounds. This again shows that ManU is in better positon than liverpool. They buy only world class players but we buy only good players. you will finish fourth again next season. I am very realistic.

What a load of bollocks!
We haven’t got the money to sign Eto’o - end of.
Then again - I don’t think we need to.
Rafa needs to sign WINGERS! Every other aspect of the team is strong, with reserve players like Pacheo, Nemeth, Plessis, etc ready to come through and become superstars a la the Arsenal team of the last couple of years.
If we don’t buy wingers, then Manure are going to match our proud title haul of 18. Now thats a nightmare that sends a horific chill to every bone in my body.
Fuck Barry, Fuck Keane, Fuck Eto’o………….

Eto would be amazin at liverpool. i’ve been following this move for the past 2 seasons but it has not happene. why not? rafa got torres as soon as he was available, if he gets keane too then he probably wont get eto. but honestly who could doubt the power of keane, torres and eto up front, mascherano, gerrard, barry and alonso mid field, with babel, carragher, riise and skrtel(an excellent new signing) at the back. this is dream team stuff.

That is only a tip of the iceberg.. how is he in training? What do his team mates think of him? How much money does he expect? Will he demand a starting place as part of his contract?
My God look at how much Barça are trying to get shot of him, are you too stoopid to grasp that, you just think it’s like Championship manager, you buy him, he scores, we all live happily ever after?

you have to accept the fact that the Two YANKS donot want to splash money to buy world class players. Muphy is right: RAFA doesnot receive the backing he deserves. The two yanks want to sign only one world class player per season yet they dream of winning the title. I don’t know how liverpool are really unlucky to have these two idiotic guys to control the club. They should receive an idiotic Idea Award of the Year really. My message to Liverpool fans: Read Murphy’s opinion carefully. Be realsitic. Don’t misplace your confidence. With the current players you have, we will end up finishing FOURTH again. All blames should go to the two idiotic owners!
kop11 - July 21st, 2008 at 5:25 pm
We need wingers badly as we need width and people on the flanks creating and supplying crosses and keeping thir opposition full backs on their toes at all times, we need players who can unlock the best teams in europe we do not need any more average players at the club, we have got to many amongst the squad already and if we want to be serious contenders. world class players is what we need at the club no more average players, we need some wingers: Diego Capel, Royson Drenthe or Morten Gamst Pederson could fill our left wing position.
We should try to get David bentley, Aaron lennon or Jesus navas to fill the right wing positon.
We need one technically gifted midfielder who can play in the middle or on the wing to unlock teams or just behind the striker : David silva, Arshavin, Sergi0 garcia, Van der vaart, Diego or Robbie keane.
Then we need a world class striker who can form a formidable partneship with torres: Samuel Eto, David Villa or Sergio Aguero.
Sergio aguero would be the best option as he has played with torres at athletico and he is very skillful and trickery and also a handful or defenders with his blistering speed.
And i hope liverpool are the team who have contacted him as aguero would be a defenders nightmare.
