Liverpool to seal SUPER £20m star next week: What a strike pairing for Rafa!
by Mr Comfort on July 19th, 2008It appears that despite the fact that Tottenham have announced that they will report Liverpool for their conduct in the race for their first class Irish striker, this source believes the deal will be done and dusted by next week and Rafa will have himself a great partner for Torres!
ROBBIE KEANE will become a Liverpool player next week – as Tottenham prepared to report the club to the authorities for their “disgraceful” conduct during the transfer saga.
Keane’s much-touted move from Spurs has been all but sealed, with only the formalities to be completed.
Spurs manager Juande Ramos intimated earlier this week that the White Hart Lane club would be willing to sell the 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international in an attempt to balance the books.
And Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will be delighted at the capture of his main striking target to replace the departed Peter Crouch.
The deal could eventually cost Liverpool up to £20million given various add-ons and incentives. (Liverpool Daily Post)
Not sure where the source above got the impression that Ramos had resigned himself to losing Keane but if that is indeed the case then this deal could well occur. Daniel Levy has made his thoughts on this and the Berbatov saga very clear and he has publicly stated time and again that he has no desire to sell either of the club’s world class strikers, I guess the only problem for the Tottenham chairman comes when or indeed if, it becomes clear that either marksman makes it clear they want to leave. Many seem to think that the Berbatov sale to Man United is only pending a bid that suits the London club as the Bulgarian has made it clear he wants to leave White Hart Lane, however Robbie Keane has announced that he has no intention of leaving the club, not least because he can see just how much potential they have under Juande Ramos. Do Liverpool fans think they will sign Keane? Do Spurs fans think that the club will keep both of their top strikers or are they of the belief that one or both will leave before the new season gets underway?

Fred - July 19th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I think we will get him, and then Rafa should sign one wide man and that should do it for the summer sales.
Nigel - July 19th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Fred yes i think your right, Keane and a wideman is all we need. I am v.excited about the coming season and hope that we can stay in the title race all season long rather than the usual mid season dip. Come on you Reds!
HaHaTottyfans - July 19th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Should be a great signing. Perfect for Torres. Still think we’ll get Barry as well, but worried about the wide player. Being linked with some terrible players. Rather not sign anyone than sign Riera

I haven’t seen the words that you ascribe to Keano. Where did you get it please? I wonder how Levy felt when he procured Ramos from Spain in dubious circumstances! Oh yea and how about the treatment of Jol? Hope his integrity encourages him to report himself to the FA!
And, yes Keano will be a red soon.
Magnumopus - July 19th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

keane and torres up front next season we need a winger but we need a classy winger not riera liverpool are lacking skill some one samber style like robinho or messi man u have ronaldo we need someone like that if rafa plays his cards right we will win the league next year
Ben - July 19th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Keane would be excelleny as well! him and torres would be good, both proven premier league goal scorers! also a winger would be good not sure about barry if we need him?
Noblelox - July 19th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
So MR COMFORT, what’s it to be? Are we buying Robbie Keane for £20M or are we buying Eto for £23M, since you are claiming we are buying both….
CY - July 19th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Robbie Keane would be a decent signing but not a world class one.
Firstly, he is not good enough to fully undertake the role of a lone striker should Torres be injured.
Secondly, Keane is not speedy, a quality I attribute to the phenomenal success of Fernando Torres.
My preference on Rafa’s summer acquisition strategy would be for him to attract WORLD CLASS players for the squad, not the above average players that would be “pretty good”.
“Pretty good” wouldnt cut it for Liverpool if they want a real shot at the title, although “pretty good” is enough to ensure we do better in the coming season.
For 20 million pounds, Robbie Keane is a little too pricey considering we got only 11 for Peter Crouch, whom i say on his day can be just as good as Robbie Keane. Robbie Keane at 12-15 million would be a considerable signing, but at 20 million pounds we should be investing for a World Class Winger as many have pointed out, such as David Silva who is reportedly up for grabs at that price.
This is because we shouldnt forget that Ryan Babel used to play as a striker and he can suffice to slot into the backup striking vacancy. Thus it wouldnt be far fetched to say that a world class winger is needed at LFC more than a world class striker, considering the 4-5-1 formation that we currently employ.
I personally tihnk that Rafa is getting really victimised in the transfer market as he is being over quoted for the players he wish to buy. aka barry 18 million keane 20 million.
With all due respect these are fantastic players at their clubs but they are only the best among the average players at average clubs.
This point can be illustrated from the purchase of Yossi Benayoun who was excellent for Everton but failed to be the expected wing wizard for Liverpool. The rationale is simple. At Anfield, the expectations are higher than at White Heart Lane or Villa Park. We need players here to be able to change a game against the BIG CATS like MAN U, CHELSEA, ARSENAL. Therefore, ABOVE AVERAGE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. We need a Cristiano Ronaldo/Rooney/Scholes/Ferdinand or a Lampard/Dogba/Terry or a Fabregas to come to the club and win us titles.
With all due respect, Barry is hardly comparable with Scholes (at his peak) or Lampard or Fabregas and neither is Keane close to the standards of Dogba and Rooney.
We have 2 world class players Gerrard and Torres. Buy someone who has the potential to be one, not someone who can never be truely World Class but just “pretty good”. Excellence is required.
makkal sakti - July 19th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
hahaha….neva thought of having keane as target but now i’m pleased…a good striker… now riera is linked to us but i guess its someone else…in rafa i trust….now i can zzzzz ….. can’t wait to kick some MU fans on the ass..
Terry P - July 19th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
i can see a 3-5-2 formation for us in some games next season. carra, skrtel, agger back 3 degen & dossena wing backs with gerrard, masch & barry in the middle with keane & torres up front. what a good team that will be
azaboy - July 19th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
“when a player’s head is turned and their commitment is absent, particularly when they occupy key positions such as that of striker, they become a negative influence in a team dressing room in which they were once a positive addition and influence. This is the situation we now have on our hands, with both Dimitar and Robbie having made it clear that they wish to leave for Manchester Utd and Liverpool respectively.”
the exact words of daniel levy
SO WE DEFINATELY GETTING KEANE
MalesterMan2 - July 19th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
3-5-2 u mad dogg. Rafa will only play with 4 Defenders and will always play with 3 Defenders dogg. geh me.
MalesterMan1 - July 19th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
blad you Stole my name!!!!!!!
steve p - July 19th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
ive got to say - im not feeling this transfer - defo not at £20M
Dont get me wrong , Keane is a good player but surley worth no more than £12M - and has no resale value. I dont think thats good business
We need 2 wingers (at least one world beater) and another stiker
Barry would be nice - as he gives better balance to the squad - but if we have keep Alonso then not the end of the world - but he needs to improve from last season
Surley Rafa must have had an initial budget of least £20m. We have spend around £11m so far - So that leaves £9m + £21m raised through addiotnal sales:
£11m Crouch
£4m Risse
£2.5 Guthrie
£3.5 Carson
Also Pending Transfers
Alonso £17m
Vorylin £3m
Pennant £4m
Letto £1.5m
Intanje £2m
So all this should leave rafa around £60m to buy 4 players
Barry £15m + Finnan
David Silva 15 -18M
David Bently £15M
1 other striker for around £12-15m? (Keane? Micky Owen? Eto? Other?)
MalesterMan3 - July 19th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
nah man, im new to u lot,
Rafa get Silva as a replacement for Kewell.
Stephen - July 19th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Benayoun is the right type of player but just not the right build. He has been the only guy this season to come on and actually change a game. He cuts inside and tries to thread a ball through the middle, which liverpool don’t do nearly enough.
I think barry can be the player to try and change that.
Or if xabi gets back to his best.
Terry P i like the idea of 3-5-2. Uncertain if degen and dossena will do the job, time will tell. But we definetly need to have a plan B. The 4-5-1 formation wont cut it against teams who put 11 men behind the ball.
I agree with what your sayin CY but liverpool simply dont have the money at the moment to be splashin out big, thats why rafa has to take chances on signing players who are decent and could become better, hence the links to reira/bently/downing etc,and especially on unproven foreign players. Barry and keane are proven in the prem and i think thats what rafa is after, for the moment atleast, considering we do have quality youngsters coming up like nemeth and insua etc.
Wonder why liverpool havent shown an interst in swp? he’s looking to leave the chelski and given a run i do think he could be a valuable acquisition.
mj-lfc - July 19th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
cy robbie keane alomst never fails to score against the big 4, he is a quality player who is able to change a game
robbie keane would be a great signing for liverpool, i personally hope we get him because him and torres upfront would be tremendous
scouse92 - July 19th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
will be made up if we get keane he is proven quality and very consistent but we should also get shaun wright phillips like tony said becasue again he is proven quality fairly young and wouldn’t break thge bank, could get for something like 10 mil and i’m sure he’d be happy with that becasue he won’t be warming the bench anymore
Pool4Life - July 19th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
MR COMFORT You made an article earlier today entitled “Liverpool to make HUGE move for £24m star: This would be Rafa’s best ever signing!”…….. and then now you have an article called “Liverpool to seal SUPER £20m star next week: What a strike pairing for Rafa!”
Do you suffer from amnesia or something???
For F**K sake will you make your bloody mind up!!!!

Sorry pool, don’t see this happening, Keane is Mr Spurs through & through he’s finally found a home here and has flourished
Joe Ryan - July 19th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Levy’s a hypocrite. Spurs are a shady club, tapped up their current manager while at Sevilla, and totally undermined Jol’s position. Keane should make the move to Liverpool, a club that should suit his style. Spurs never appreciated what they had in Keane, and his career would always have benefited from a move away. The amount of times you looked and saw him sitting on the bench for someone like Defoe, Kanoute or Mido.
Keane and Torres could be a lethal partnership. Liverpool need to cut the fat, sell nothing players like Benayoun and Pennant, get some creativity into the midfield, and they’ll be primed to make a move for the title.
BOB HOPE AND NO HOPE - July 19th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
If Keane’s worth £20,000,000 than we just got done letting crouchie go for a poxy £11,000,000
I’d rather Crouch than keane any day
This is the difference between Man U and us at the moment they are after Berbatov and we are after Keane
robbie - not roy! - July 19th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
keane will be a great adition to us. we have a high number of talented youngsters around 21-25 range and we need more experienced ones to join carra & gerrard. this is what rafa is trying to do this season i.e. barry & keane. seems to me they could potentially be the icing on the cake.
both are winners, both are good guys, team-players, intelligent & flexible.

Well said. This is why we cant compete. A real financial strategy for Rafa would be to either get the best or not sign at all. Maybe if we are really as short up on cash as the Americans portray us to be then perhaps a smart move would be to not spend any money now and save whatever pathetic 10 - 15 million we have in the transfer kitty and blow it all next year with the new revenue we get during the coming season to buy a 30 million player like Aguero and count on him to make an impact like Torres.
The current way things are going: Rafa is bringing in decent players every year like Pennant/Benayoun/Arbeloa/Kuyt but quantity doesnt really help against the top teams because you need quality above a certain threshold to score goals against John Terry/Ferdinand etc.
The real heart break comes from the fact that our American owners SUCK and refuse to roll out the cash. Rafa has to scrimp and save and in the end we have enough squad players to cover for 2 teams but lack real super stars.
Im not sure if anyone noticed but Steven Gerrard’s age will be catching up soon and hes a lucky man if he can maintain his form for another 3 years or max 5.
In that sense if Liverpool wants to win anything they better win it within this 3-5 years or we would have lost Gerrard and along with him any chances of the title should the financial circumstances remain unchanged every summer.
The skipper’s put his whole career in for LFC and i think he really deserves a title medal, don’t you?

Hey Bob hope, can’t you get your head around the fact that Crouchie only had 12 months left on his contract, I’m amazed we got £11M for him, I’d have had Harry’s hand off at £9M. Crouch wasn’t happy warming the bench, and he’d have never re-signed, leaving Liverpool with a very weak hand. I think getting £11M is stunning business.
With Keane, yes he’s a bit older, but you have to look at investing £10M a year in your striker, so if we get 2 stunning years out of him and then sell him to Harry Redknapp for £10, we’ll well in again.

I now undersatnd why they said that scousers are thick. If Levy intend to sell to Liverpool, you think he will sour the relationship by mkaing this matter public ?
READ OUR LIPS, You are not getting Keane his season, you will get him when he is pass the sell on date.
Liverpool is a joke; making a mess of every major deal .Where is the goldmine that CL has provided to you ? Heavens help you when you start building a new stadium like the gooners. You have to sell of a team every season ! Ask a certain Mr Wenger on the details.
You are Leeds MKII without CL football.

So a poster eckons two good years out of a striker is worth £10 million a year. Back on planet earth I now see why Liverpool will be receiving a vist from the bailiffs in the next year or so. Their is a credit crunch for subprime borrowers like Hicks and Gillette. Don’t rely on DIC as Dubai will go back into it’ Islamic shell and they won’t be buying second hand desperate clubs abroad. If Keane comes ,he’d better get his two or three years money up front if he’s got any sense.
