Liverpool line up £12m PLAN B: Could be a good signing!
by Mr Comfort on July 20th, 2008Apparently Rafa B has a fall-back plan if they fail to snare Aston Villa Gareth Barry.
Gareth Barry’s hopes of a swift end to his transfer stalemate hinge on showdown talks between Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez and Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso.
Spain midfielder Alonso hopes to stay at Anfield, but his club are inviting offers.
He will return to training this week to state his case. But unless he is sold, then Aston Villa and England star Barry has little chance of joining Liverpool.
If the Reds cannot do a deal with Villa, then they will shift their thoughts to Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing. (News of the World)
Gareth Southgate and Steve Gibson have repeatedly claimed that £12m-rated Downing is going nowhere, but the winger himself issued comments at the close of last season that seemed to suggest he would be open to a new challenge. Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the winger. Do Liverpool fans think that the England international could be a useful signing for the club?

Downing is very hit and miss, not sure he is worth it to be honest
Stevie - July 20th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Rafa please please please! Keep alonso and don’t bother with Downing and Barry
George - July 20th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Downing is not as good as people think he is, most of his crosses fail to hit the mark and he disappears for long periods of games
ian - July 20th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
I take it George is a regular at the Riverside?
djlfc - July 20th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Bud Weisser - July 20th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

yidd master - July 20th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Where are Liverfool getting there money from for all these signings, or shall i say tap ups,
Trying to unsettle another club now, Liverfool used to be a respected club but Rafa has managed to ruin your reputation
reputation can take a lifetime to build and five minutes to destroy, and that is what Rafa has done, try the legal appraoch
Banksy - July 20th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
…like u yids eh yidd master ?? …jol.. how respectful, ramos tapped up for months, john bostock ……list goes on ..

screw downing he cannot cross a ball
for god sakes rafa we dont need another midfielder for god sakes hurry up and sign villa
King Torres - July 21st, 2008 at 12:03 am
This story is pathetic. If we don’t get Barry to play central midfield we will buy a 3rd rate left winger instead. Come on nobody’s taking this seriously are they. I think this story has even been regurgitated from about 6 weeks ago!!!
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 12:19 am
we dont need downing. waste of space. BABEL played alot of games there last season and i think the lad will only get better, tho eventually he will be used as a2nd striker. ROBBIE KEANE is a must, proven premier league striker. BARRY, if we get him, fair enough, BUT we have plenty of quality there, MASCHERANO, ALONSO, LUCAS, and PLESSIS is developing well.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 12:31 am
to continue, the defence is strong, AURELIO, touch wood stays fit. him DOSSENA and INSUA(put on some pounds and looks stronger) will fight for the left back spot. FINNAN, ARBELOA and DEGGEN will fight for right back. any one of them will do a job. centre halves, good to have four QUALITY players there, CARRA, SAMI, SKRTEL and AGGER. You could pair any together, and ARBELOA as extra cover.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 12:45 am
the MIDFIELD, GERRARD is a given, the team ticks around him. MASCHERANO stands out. the flanks????? BABEL played on the left & will improve, KUYT industrious but it aint his position. BENAYOUN hit & miss, PENNANT, so much ability BUT to show it in only 3 games a season, aint good enough. XABI poor season by his standards(injuries aside). LUCAS will push on this season, PLESSIS will develop aswell. LETO on the leftwing can be a force if he keeps his chin up and knuckles down like INSUA did last year………….
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 12:58 am
FORWARDS. what can you say about TORRES????? tho this season will be a tougher test for EL NINO. thats why we need more fire power. KUYT, seems to have lost alot of confidence in front of goal since the sad death of his father(DONT GET ME WRONG, HE,S SHOWN TREMENDOUS COURAGE TO GIVE 110% EVERY GAME). IF KUYT gets his touch & instinct back this season in front of goal then that could be a deadly partnership. KEANE would be a massive addition tho.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 1:15 am
i know i might be babblin to alot of you. BUT IM RED THRU N THRU. VORONIN has shown some form in pre season, but the lad PACHEO alongside him looks good. sharp, skillfull, maybe the physical side of the PREMIERSHIP, might let him down, but hey he.s 17yrs old. no fear. look at OWEN &FOWLER. TWO GODS. We need to strengthen up front tho now that CROUCH has gone. CROUCHIE did well for the REDS, shame he wasnt in RAFA,S REVOLUTION. WISH HIM WELL.

sticky, spot on. but whats clear is we already have a great team, without the new signings. I feel Rafa needs to settle on a line-up ( tough i know, with all the variables involved in football) and bring some stability to the first 11, I’m not a fan of rotation policy (old school). teams and players need regular games to get them tight as a unit. just a thought, why not keep xabi for our CL games, where hes better suited and use GB for our PL games and win fuking both!! ( AGAIN! )
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 1:37 am
The wings is also a place we need to improve, realisticly BABEL & KUYT arent out & out wingers. they are both forwards by trade, but have done an excellent job by adjusting and playing there for the sake of the team, DONT GET ME WRONG, BUT i see 2 players wasted at their clubs. LENNON at spurs & WRIGHT~PHILLIPS at chealski. both cud do a job at ANFIELD under RAFA,S guidance. they wouldnt cost that much either. they both seem surplus to requirements at their respected clubs, they both have premierleague pedigree. id pick either one of them above downing.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 1:44 am
REDHEAD good point, read my last msg, dont see why we have to go abroad when there are players in this country who are suited to the game, whereas a overseas player either hits it off or takes 3 seasons to adjust to our fast & physical game???
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 1:55 am
History shows we were the DOMINANT force in europe and steady away we are getting there again. HYSEL was abig blow to us(even tho alot of teams claim they could have been, man u, everton, blah di blah blah.) 5 european cups dont come that easy, no matter how much money u have to spend(man u, chelski, madrid, barca) we won it with a new manager & new ideas & attitude.
REDHED - July 21st, 2008 at 2:04 am
this is where a very good manager earns his pay, being able to play both styles of the game, PL & CL! , have a winning side, or at the least play good football. wingers would suit xabi and his passing game.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:12 am
the premierleague is the BIG ONE, wot all true REDS want. the rotation system as a lot of people say lets us down. but who,s to say that TORRES, GERRARD, would have been that effective without it????? that then comes down to the squad. i truley understand about stability in a team. u win week in week out it breeds confidence and momentum, but when your playin 60 odd games a season you need a big quality squad. WHO replaces GERRARD??? OR TORRES????? OR REINA??? the defence i feel is pretty much sorted. MIDFIELD & ATTACK a way to go.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:20 am
REDHED i agree , have u noticed that this season coming that man utd hav complained coz they hav to play games so close after playing champs league games???? whereas in the last few seasons us, chelski, arsenal hav had to do the same AND JUST GOT ON WITH IT!!!!!!!
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:30 am
Dont get me wrong i wanna keep hold of XABI, our current squad is more than capable of matchin ANYONE in europe, just over 38 games i feel we aint got the quality to match utd, chelski, arsenal. in europe we,ve proved by playin the fast n furious way against porto n marseille that we can destroy teams(oh and besiktas 8nil)
REDHED - July 21st, 2008 at 2:43 am
it kills me that when it comes down to it those two losses to manure was the title gone . theres fuk all respect for them in south africa! lets do the same this season. cant wait to see how EL NINO goes , same or better!, no doubt he’ll be better known, but he was well known 1/2 way into last season as well! still couldnt catch him!
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:45 am
end of the day we need 2 more quality strikers, or develop PACHEO & EL ZHAR, 2 more out n out wingers(if thats RAFA,s plan of attack), & somebody to take the pressure off GERRARD, shame zidane isnt 10yrs younger, ha ha ha ha
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:52 am
shudve beat utd home & away(barring the stupid sendin off of MASCHERANO) That law that hasnt been used again!!!!!!!!!!! every season a scabby goal against the run of play.
slicky4 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:55 am
united knew how to play TORRES last season. just foul him. and they got away with it.
albert - July 21st, 2008 at 4:04 am
just buy silva
Red's Fury™ - July 21st, 2008 at 5:49 am
Robbie Keane and David Silva are the answers. Forget Barry, Downing, Reira and etc…
YNWA…
REDHED - July 21st, 2008 at 6:00 am
what doesn’t kill ya makes ya stronger! I saw a hard tackling/ hard challenging forward playing for Spain at the euros, EL NINO wont be pushed around this season just watch! . as long as refs are straight, it’ll work in our favour for dead ball set pieces,as EL NINO is exellent in the air.
Koptalk - July 21st, 2008 at 6:57 am
Downing is in the same mould as Pennant, alot of promise but will always fail to deliver once they make the step up to a club like Liverpool. The fact that Liverpool are even contemplating buying Downing I find ridiculous, If we are going to be serious title contenders then we need to be looking at better options than Downing. Bentley would be a better choice, but I still have my reservations about him, he’s had a good year at Blackburn, broken into the England set up, but can he do it consistently at a higher level?
Gibbons the hoop - July 21st, 2008 at 7:54 am
How is Downing a plan B? They play in different postions! and there toataly different anyway as Barry is like the allround defensive and offensive type wereas Downing the offensive type.
Tome the maco - July 21st, 2008 at 8:34 am
Xabi Alonso is worth more, much better and more talented than both Downing and Barry, but Liverpool are desparate for left side players after losing Kewell and Riise, we have to get one, Barry has the experience, but Downing is younger…… your call Rafa, but keep Xabi..
Tushar - July 21st, 2008 at 8:42 am
Rafa, Please keep Alonso. Bring Keane & Silva. That would be a nice & strong Liverpool squad. Dont go for berry or downing.
Richardtheframeman - July 21st, 2008 at 9:21 am
Please sign Downing. Even more dross at Liverpool
larry - July 21st, 2008 at 10:16 am
I would like someone to point out to me at what point Downing earned the right to be linked with a move to a bigger club. He is completely bog standard and it would be an insult to Spurs fans if they signed him nevermind Liverpool.
Royal Blue Mersey - July 21st, 2008 at 11:34 am
Don’t do it Downing- joining the Anfield players graveyard will mean nothing but grabbing yourself a ‘19th anniversary without a title’ tee shirt and arse splinters from the rotation.
0500Silva - July 21st, 2008 at 12:03 pm
lol without a title mate? what planet do you freggin live on? moron? arse splinters come from ur mouth disgusting prick

What do you suggest he does Royal Blue Mursey? Join that small toffee club so he can look forward to spending the shortest amount of time in European cup football as possible? Get back to making comments about your insignificant club.

lfc - July 21st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Any Liverpool fan who says keeps alonso dont buy downing is a nutter.
Are you blind to realise that when we get Kean gerrard will play in the centre! Meaning Alonso will always be on the bench. + We’ll still have leiva and plessi.
Are options are to have Alonso on the bench or sign a good-top quality winger who will flourish at our club. I think i know what ill be going for.
Royal Blue Mersey - July 21st, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Alonso is average and cannot hold down a place. Barry has half his skill and half his pace, plus you are being held to ransom as he is a £4m player being touted at £18m.
Do the Math.
Ben - July 21st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Yes that is what we need!
Zlot - July 21st, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Babel and/or Benayoun on the left. Or am I missing something?

KEEP ALONSO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shaun - July 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 am
I have no doubt Downing could play for a bigger club, it would be a travesty for Boro to sell him for £12million. The prices some players are going for these days he is worth more to Boro than £12million.
