Liverpool to make IMPORTANT £16m bid: The price is just right!
by Mr Comfort on July 20th, 2008Rafa doesn’t appear to take no for an answer and so it appears that he will try one more time to snare a certain Aston Villa midfielder!
Liverpool are prepared to make one final attempt this week to sign Gareth Barry by increasing their cash offer to £16m, but will contact Aston Villa before tabling the bid to ensure it will not be rejected for a fifth time.
Villa value Barry at £18m, a fee Liverpool believe they have met by offering £15m and defender Steve Finnan, who they value at £3m. In a bid to end the protracted saga, Liverpool will offer another £1m, but it is understood that is as high as they will go.
Arsenal are monitoring events if the deal falls through. It is believed that Barry would jump at the prospect of a switch to the London club. (Times Online)
I think this bid may be the one to secure the deal, clearly the longer this goes on, the more disruptive things will be for Aston Villa. They have already begun their Intertoto Cup campaign, and their skipper is slightly injured at present, so Martin O’Neill will be keen to just get this whole saga over and done with before it makes much more of an impact on their pre-season schedule. Some would say that the latest bid from Liverpool is a generous one, but in today’s market it is about right, and the sooner this headache is resolved the better for everyone, unless of course Arsenal sneak in and make a better offer! Do Liverpool fans think that Rafa is right to keep up his chase of the England man?

How nice of Rafa’s best mate and confidante shane lfc fan to share his insider knowledge with the world at large. we are most grateful for your kind indulgence. How do you communicate with Rafa as he only speaks Spanish and English and you appear to only write gibberish? Do they have schools other than kindergarden in liverpool now?

I save really good comebacks for errrr something good to come back at
Mike - July 20th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
We do not need barry, over priced. I do not understand why we are still going after him. Alonso is much better, as in gerrard and mascherano. We need a left winger and at least 1 other striker.
edirock - July 21st, 2008 at 3:13 am
excellent point mike…
at centre midfield we shouldn’t waste any more penny as we got all the talent we need [stevie g, mash, alonso, with back-up like lucas and plesis)
all we need is a wide player like babel and my only choice would be quaresma and a striking partner for torres (should be keane or villa) that’s about it!
why rafa still want to collect all this never-good-enough-player to play in anfield???
enough of player like sissoko, josemi, morientes in the past.

To be honest, RB must see something special about Barry to indentify him as the main target. Up till now, I don’t think RB has got any of his big signings wrong. Torres, Alonso, Skertl, Agger, Reina, Macherano, Babbel (jury still out on this one). I say apart maybe Kuyt (who was a mid price signing) who has not set the world alight but have not done bad. So you kind of have to believe in Rafa. if he thinks he is that good then I’d rather spend an extra£4m (I think Barry is worth around 12-14m) and get his main target than go for second best. Remeber Simao and Alves when we were arguing over a couple of million and ended up with Pennant and no body at right back?

Don’t forget Barry offers more than Alonso. He can provide cover for left mid, left back as well. Also he can play on the left of a diamond formation where as Alonso cannot

why do u people show so little class. Liverpool is a great club, and you make us real supporters laugh. Do not talk about shit u do not know and cant understand!!!

i think your all mad, i love alonso but when it comes to managing a premier league winning team any manager in the world would take barry over alonso. he’s better defensively, he can play left mid left back defensive mid, attacking mid. he’s a great penalty taker and can take the odd free kick giving us a left foot option. also he has a nack of scoring pretty regularly and chipping in with assists.
alonso for me is one of the best passers in the league, but he’s a luxury player, he doesnt score enough and he’s not great defensively at all. your midfielders should be good at 1 of these 2 things at least.
some prem stats for you:
Barry -
minutes played: 3319
goals: 9
assists: 10
Alonso -
minutes played: 1468
Goals: 2
Assists: 1
say what you like about time on the pitch but if alonso is such a great passer and that is his cheif skill, then i’d expect more than 1 assist in nearly 1500 minutes (over 16 full games).
love alonso, prefer to have barry

I also think that we are missing freekick takers… Chelsea has ballack, drogba, lampard. Man U has Giggs, Ronaldo, hargreaves. Who do we have? Gerrad takes them but is not that good, Riise was rubbish, aurelio the same… I think we are weak in this department and it needs to be addressed!
Royal Blue Mersey - July 21st, 2008 at 11:42 am
Don’t do it Barry- joining the Anfield players graveyard will mean nothing but grabbing yourself a ‘19th anniversary without a title’ tee shirt and arse splinters from the rotation.
On second thoughts.. please do it- you are a slow, bread and butter player so the overpriced fee is great!
Red - July 21st, 2008 at 12:12 pm
yeah don’t do it and Join Everton instead cos they have won so many titles and trophies over the years! Skanky blue mersey… get real mate!
Royal Blue Mersey - July 21st, 2008 at 12:29 pm
This is what’s real; spending £50M a season on shite for the last 20 years and winnin no titles. Blackburn have won more Premierships than LFC. Stop trying to attach yourselves to the Big 3.
david elnino - July 21st, 2008 at 12:35 pm
lets get this straight, barry is an outstanding premiership midfielder, and i will be glad to sign him for the pool, but £18 million, F**king ransom, i used to like martin oneil, a fellow irish man like myself……..but i hate him with a passion now holding us to ransom, let him go for £15 million. im looking for villa in the fixture list first, i so hope we beat them!!!!!
LFC for life - July 21st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Erm, Royal Blur Mersey, your a dic. Houllier spent £150 for gods sake and we’re still trying to forget about him. You could buy Everton for that much money, Everton the mighty waste of space which in a few years won’t even be littering our great city no more. And by the way I think you’ll find the Champions league is a title, one you’ll never have the pleasure of holding while your alive. Oh plus we all know that Liverpool are going to win the league this year. Hey if I keep thinking it one year it WILL happen. Long live King Rafa, keep an eye on Pacheco this year he could be the new kid on the block.
Royal Blue Mersey - July 21st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
this year…this year..this year.
Wake up and smell the coffee Olaf.
Royal Blue Mersey - July 21st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
“the tea lady of the year is a title isn’t it, oh and how about best sausage rolls of the year”
Show us your premierships you bunch of wannabe hoof and hope wastrels.
Ben - July 21st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Fairly reasonable but no more than that!
Royal Blue Sh*thouse - July 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Get real you idiot, is there really so little happening on the Everton sites that you have to waste time on here?
“Show us your premierships you bunch of wannabe hoof and hope wastrels.”
I Had to read that twice, just to be sure you’d been stupid enough to write it. The gooners can say that and the dirty mancs can say that, even the chavs can coz they have won the premiership. Everton never have and never will win the premiership because they are a small club in the eyes of the worlds top players, and no amount of money off coupons for Tesco are going to attract them to Goodison.
Sadly (no-one is perfect) I have a relative who is a blue and so I had to endure a ground tour when he had his wedding reception at Goodison, I knew that Everton have not been a big club for a quite considerable amount of time but I can honestly say that Evertons trophy cabinet is little bigger than my sock drawer. Good luck for the coming season Jackass, you are going to need it.
JT - July 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
If Everton fans concentrated on there own team for a season then maybe you might start challenging for trophies yourselves. Every footballer that comes to liverpool is attracted by not only our history, but also the fact we consistently challenge for trophies and are rated as one of the top teams in europe, its a fact all everton fans struggle to accept, its hig time you did. All managers spend money in the transfer market whether it small amounts or large amounts, didnt David Moyes buy a player he’d never seen before then when he turned up reallised his scout had got the wrong guy, maybe thats why you dont spend big!!!!
