Spurs in £16m TRIO bid: ONE good, TWO average!
by Mr Comfort on July 20th, 2008Sunderland boss Roy Keane looks set to sign at least three of the original four his club bid for as some Tottenham cast off’s look to a bright new challenge in the north-east.
Steed Malbranque, Teemu Tainio and Younes Kaboul have joined Pascal Chimbonda in holding talks with Sunderland.
The Black Cats tabled bids for the Tottenham players earlier in the week and Chimbonda arrived at the Stadium of Light on Saturday morning for talks over a potential transfer.
The French defender’s three Spurs team-mates have now all made the same journey to meet with Sunderland boss Roy Keane.
Agent Rudy Raba had stated that Kaboul was not interested in a switch to Sunderland, with Portsmouth leading the chase for the 22-year-old.
However, he has decided to listen to Sunderland’s offer before reassessing his options.
Malbranque and Tainio have also discussed personal terms with the club and it would appear they have no future at Tottenham. (Sky Sports)
Given Kaboul’s comments following the original bid from Roy Keane I would imagine the Black Cats may not be quite so keen on the French defender, but the other trio all look keen on the move up north where they will all be looking to resurrect their first team careers. Younes looks far happier with a potential move to Portsmouth but they seem unwilling to meet the 7m valuation so not sure where that will leave the centre back. Do Spurs fans think they should have held onto Steed or would he have only been a squad player and therefore not worth holding back?

matt..shelfsidespurs - July 20th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Would be nice to keep Steed, but if Bentley or Capel come in (which I hope one of them does) then he will only be a squad player and therefore could be sold. O’Hara and Jenas are versatile to play anyhere across the MF between them and we have plenty of options with Modric, Hudd, Lennon, Taraabt and Dos Santos

I wish all the best to Steed he was a great soldier for us but it is time to move on. Ramos likes width with old fashioned wingers which Steed is not, and he is not likely to get a sniff in the middle. I think that’s where Keane will play him and he should get lots of playing time. Sad to see him go but we need to improve left wing if we are to move up the standings.

All half decent players but none are top four material so are welcome to leave!

Shame to see steed go has been superb for us i wish him well
stoney - July 20th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
All very average players. Good enough for sunderland and their levels of expectation but not good enough for spurs. Onwards and upwards.
No1 Spud - July 20th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I have never quite jived with Steed but he always proves me wrong. He was solid last season. But to tell you the truth with Dos Santos at the Lane I would rather see the kid making runs down the wing. So good luck Steed. With Sunderland he will be a star.
Juande Ramos - July 20th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Steve has been amazing for us, and has always worn his heart on his sleeve… the boys a yid forever.
Bristol Spur - July 20th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Always 100% Steed, which is rarely the case in a lilywhite shirt.
Maybe; Paul Allen, Gary Mabbutt, Graeme Roberts, Robbie Keane.
But can’t think of many that combined talent and maximum effort at all times.
Chingford Spur - July 20th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I would keep both Steed AND Tainio.
Teemu is a boyhood Spurs fan, plays hard for the shirt and is much better than Zokora. If we fail to get a decent midfield general (I don’t like the term defensive midfielder as ideally both CMs should have a good all-round game and cover for each other) then I’d keep him to play alongside Modric if needed…sell the Ivorian fraudster.

Steed .m…….has strength for a squad in the premier in a way that is proven
….with spurs…..we could need him when tough games .injuries midfield etc
over a season…..not quite sure why he.s not in spurs /ramos plans ,his departure .must be ..money etc…if we are serious about having two squads? to rotate experience and youth!
Bob The Yid - July 20th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
I can see why fans say we should keep steed cos he had a good season and 100 % and T anio a good spoiler in big matches but RAMOS is raising the bar guys and knows what is reqd to get to next level.

Steed was up there last season in our best three players. He did not complain playing in an unfavoured role. I suppose this demonstrates that clubs use and dispose of players when it suits them. A bit of a double standard here as Keane seems to have been crucified for picking the ‘time’ to leave rather than be told so by the club. What irony that the three players who were our best last season, Keane, Berbatov and Malbranque all seem to be leaving! In some ways this whole timing argument reminds me of the furore when Revie had the temerity to leave the England before being sacked like all the rest.

Teemu and Steed are grafters. Usually shine when given the opportunity. Wish all the Spurs players showed their fondness for the club. If the whole squad followed their example, top four would not be out of the question.

gotta keep him rather av him than jenas any day let him play a more central attackin role carvin it up not always startin but def worth avin around

jeff - July 21st, 2008 at 2:23 pm
excellent job steed. much respect.
sean - July 21st, 2008 at 2:32 pm
No 10 - you see that is the problem with Spurs: Juande Ramos doesn’t even know the names of his own players - Steve, indeed :-O
Mind you, Big Jack got away with it in Ireland ;-D
Like most on here, would be sad to see Stead (nb STEAD) go - would love to see him stay for the squad, but if it ain’t gonna happen.
Feel prett much the same about Tainio - always gave his all in his somewhat limited and injury prone way - good luck to him.
As for Chimbonda (that’s ChimBonBa in David PleatMeister land), it has all been sdaid so many times. Decent enough, but Hutton is a better alround player (i.e. he defends better - an amazingly important ability for a defender), and he has attitude issues.
As for Kaboul - I would have been happy to see him stay as cover, but he opened his BIG MOUTH and that, I suspect, is enough for Juande.

steed is the fuckin worst player 2 ever wear a spurs shirt he is fukin useless nd gives the ball away everytime he touches it
