Aston Villa finally abandon move for highly-rated winger: Could a certain United player be in the cards?
by offsidetrap on July 21st, 2008Well you can stop the rumours about David Bentley going to Villa. After much talk and discussion last week, Villa boss Martin O’Neill has been resigned to the fact that the Blackburn man can’t be part of the picture next year. However, that doesn’t mean the club doesn’t have a backup option.
Aston Villa could be back on the trail of Newcastle winger James Milner after abandoning their attempts to sign Blackburn midfielder David Bentley. (Daily Telegraph)
OK, so James Milner is no David Bentley, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a fair addition to the club…right? If anything, at least he’s better than watching Martin go without any winger for the entire summer! After playing at Villa on loan, one would think that his previous relationship with the club would make him a smart fit to gel quickly with the current squad.
What do Villa supporters think about a move for Milner? Would he prove to be a solid second option to David Bentley?

please no. Milner is average and his end product is poor. We will get no where signing players like this for £10 million.
M O'Neill sort it out!! - July 21st, 2008 at 4:00 pm
im getting worried about everything going on dow the villa. our best player wants to leave and we appear to be half trying to sign players. Why arent we pulling out the stops to sign the big players - how can sunderland beat us to the signing of chimbonda, are tottenham that much better than us that they will beat us to the signing of bentley? After that abysmal performance the weekend and in the past few games we need about ten players. i cannot see us getting in the top ten at this rate. we will struggle. i am listening to too many broken promises at the minute. O’neill hasnt ever signed a big money player and has never done well in a top league - im not sure hes cut out for it. We have not won a game since we beat blues. SORT IT OUT O’NEILL!!

The likes of Chimbonda??? Go off and write about something you know….because it certainly isn’t football. Chimbonda is a W***er Spurs are desperate to get rid of him as he is such a disruptive influence.
As for the other poster…..Milner is one of the most underrated players in the league. You only have to look at who would be most upset. Rovers fans would love to get that much for Bentley and Newcastle fans would be gutted to lose Milner….
I sometimes wonder if people who post on here actually go up to watch the Villa or whether as I suspect are closet Bluenoses who have nothing better to do as there own team is such a laughing stock.

Totally agree with the last comment, were are going to struggle big time!! the chairman is a great businessman but im worried that hes here just for the money and he wont invest in players. Why arent we putting in big money bids for gudjohnsson or bentley? surely we have the cash!! It could be a long hard season - luckilly there are too many awful clubs in the division for us to be dragged in to a relegation fight - hopefully!!
Steve - July 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
i meant i agree with “M Oneill sort it out” not the person who appears to know nothing about football. AVFC 82 you probably arent old enough to remeber 82!
Steve - July 21st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
If Rvers would love to get that for Bentley then why are they rejecting bids of that much and asking for 17million which is what hes worth - he will be englands winger for years to come. And Newcastle be gutted to lose Milner? why are they trying to get rid then? they wouldnt acceot bids if they didnt want to get rid. tit

Steve avfc82 is right. Many Blackburn fans would be happy to sell Bentley if they get £15m+. Newcastle fans on the other hand are desperate to hold onto Milner believe me. He was one of their better players last season and is underrated.
So, we have overrated, media-hyped Bentley who publicly says he wants to leave and underrated Milner who quietly gets the job done and will be £7m or so cheaper. Also, Milner can play on both wings so him and Young could swap wings and confuse opponents. That system would work quite well.

Steve…..
My first season ticket was aged 12 in 85. A time when we had possibly one of the worst Villa squads ever….Stainrod,Norton,Glover,Kerr to name but a few.
I realise how bad things can be. To say MON can’t cut it is absolute bullshi*. We had nothing but progression so far so how can anybody say otherwise?
We desperately need players in but splashing a lot of money doesn’t guarantee quality.
JONARD - July 21st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Steve shut up u nob… We’re in the process of qualifying for Europe and you’re worrying about us getting relegated next year? As for Bentley Mon does not want to pay over the odds for a player, and rightly so, he has budget on which to buy his players. 18 million would get Quaresma never mind Bentley. I dont particularly rate Milner myself but Newcastle fans like him and dont wanna get rid of him. And as for Gudjohnsen, we already bid for him before and he said he didn’t wanna come, so what are you on about?.. A much better option would be someone like Schweinsteiger for 13 milion
avfc82 - July 21st, 2008 at 4:39 pm
They are rejecting bids because like us with Barry they don’t want to sell him.
How can you patronise me by saying I’m not old enough? Please don’t tell me your over fourteen,y our spelling and punctuation suggest otherwise.

what a bunch of bitches….
Plus anyone that has watched villa over the past few seasons should know that milner single handedly saved us from relegation when oleary was in charge. I would like you to all wait until the end of the window before bringing out crap arguments. Yes, MON has brought a couple of stinkers (petrov, knight), but at least we are progressing. Look at spurs, sign a couple of top names but will still be midtable come the end of the season due to the fact they have no backbone, MON’s football works, and until it doesn’t please shut the f**k up and support the team the 3 games a year you all go…..
rowleyvillan - July 21st, 2008 at 6:03 pm
avfc82 writes a great deal of sense. Milner had a very good year with us on loan. He has skill , pace and can never be faulted for effort. Sometimes he fails to put in a good final ball but from what I have seen of Bentley he has his lapses too. Either player would be an asset.
I guess many of us are feeling frustrated by the result on Saturday and our lack of involvement in the transfer market but attacks on MON are at this stage ridiculous. The club have made enormous strides during the last couple of seasons and I suspect that MON will bring in a number of quality players. But I also suspect that he is keeping a close eye on the products of the youth team. That is where our real future lies.
avfc82 - July 22nd, 2008 at 7:59 am
Tommy T if you actually read what was said you will see it is only two people that are criticising MON.
By the way, I’ve had a season ticket since 85. I was one of the 7000 or so that year………

to be honest i would rather have milner, he gets back to defend aswell as pushing foward and putting the crosses in. Villa fans need to have some faith in Martin O’neil and Randy Lerner. Everyone seems to be talking about us getting in average players but when you think of it, wasnt Ashley young an average player before he came to us. Look at him now.
