Liverpool back in £32m STAR striker chase: Would be a better option than Keane!
by Mr Comfort on July 21st, 2008The source below suggests that noises coming from a certain La Liga club have re-ignited the race for one hell of a striker!
In a sensational report out today, it has been announced by Marca that the majority shareholder in Valencia, Juan Soler, has told the club that sales have to be made to balance the books.
They expect to get around 40 million euros for David Villa, and they will have no shortage of bidders for him, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool heading the list, with Man Utd, Chelsea and Milan other possibilities. (footylatest.com)
Valencia will not be keen to sell their prize asset to fellow La Liga sides, and Barca have already spent a fortune and Real Madrid are already putting all their financial eggs in one basket, namely the huge projected transfer of a certain Man United player. However if Liverpool manage to offload another big name player to go with the money already raised from the sales of Crouch, Riise, Carson and Guthrie then they could muster the cash to put in a bid. Former Valencia boss Rafa Benitez has already spoken of his interest in Villa in the past and I think we can all agree that a potential strike pairing of Torres and Villa at Anfield could be too good an opportunity for the Spanish striker and the Merseyside club to resist! Do Liverpool fans think a pairing of Villa and Torres would the club potential title challengers?

Lovely thought but dream on guys the yanks won’t wear it, we need owners with real not Monopoly Money™ before we can go after guys like Villa they still haven’t paid for the last lot of transfers.
King Torres - July 21st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
I think there is more money avaialble than we are letting people know. Why bid for a player and say we have up to £30m to spend if we want to get for £20m??? If you beleive everything then buying Keane and Barry will cosy £38m Where is that money coming from. We have ruled out Villa though and I beleive Keane is the better option as he will be able to create more than Villa. Even better if Villa will cost £12m more!!!!
Bobby Sant - July 21st, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Roy - July 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Who cares about the headlines when truly Keano is better than Villa in the sense of Premier League experience. People can write anything they feel about this beautiful game. That’s why they call it” COMMENT”. For me personally, I’d rather see more talks about wingers than strikers. And i feel an additional of one ‘world class’ winger will bring us the league title!!!
lfc - July 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I am a Liverpool fan and as 1 i am smart enough to know we wont get him.
This season its impossible. Absolutely impossible.
With us getting Kean we barely have any money left let alone fuking 32 million for a player we dont need.
Were signing a new striker, have enough strikers, Kean is a striker and we dont have the money.
Oh did i say WE DONT HAVE THE MONEY!!

I DON’T

villa is not a target as rafa wants someone to supply torres, not vice versa.
factor in the lack of funds and its obvious-this is not going to happen.

it would be madness to waste all this money on one player..how much money will we have …we need about 100million euro to buy all the players we need to challenge for the title..and the champions league…and we could do with an Fa cup final appearance…this is who we need , Barry,Silva or bentley.Keane, we have Dossena…we could also do with an expierenced RB…and possibly another attacker midfielder..we cant just relie on Torres , Gerard to keep teaming up and saving our asses.. we need more big game players for or five more..simple ..yanks get your check book out you hungry scheming c.nts…

people any person who thinks robbie keane would be a better option than david villa clearly knows fuck all about football.
i’m irish and even i can clearly see that keane hasnt even close to the kind of class and sheer quality that david villa could offer at Liverpool.
anyone who watched euro 2008 must know that fernando torres and david villa are the ultimate strike force, in my opinion the best in the world.
forget keane and barry really. alonso is a better football player than barry is. barry only looks brilliant as the big fish in the small pond at villa. watch what happens when he comes to anfield.
both are good footballers no doubt but neither are worth even close to the transfer fee’s their nutcase managers are demanding.
barry £18 million+? bollocks my friend
keane £20 million? for 12 goals a season? you can keep him mate
Villa £32 million? the best strike force in the world, torres’s perfect partner? i think so my friend i think so.
and bring on silva while ur at it. chap is very good.

not going to happen sick of all these rumours. we all know keane and barry are rafas targets . villa is a pipe dream and to be honest i think for the time being keane is a better option experence of the premier league and the ability to play in the hole behind torres . the purchase of villa would make rafa have a total rethink of how he wants liverpool to play next season if we play like we did towards the end of last season in a 4 ,4,1,1 formation then keane is deffo the man with gerrard pushing back into midfield , villa nice idea in reality will not happen ,might get him in my football manager game though.

I personally think Villa is just a smokescreen, come on, you have witnessed that at Euro 2008, Spain pairing of Torres and Villa will definitely downgrade Torres perfomances. Torres and Villa are similiar type of player but Villa is a bit lightweight.
Keane is much more ideal to partner Torres than Villa plus the £40mil tag is way out of proportion. Reds linked with Valencia player, and the player could be the other David. Just wait and see…

imi - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 am
hey guys you need to take this seriously….
david villa is a close friend of mine and i can tell you that theres more chance of him being my mate, then him comin to anfield!!!
if we’d bought half the the players rumoured to be comin in the last 6 months we’d have spent 2.7 billion out the transfer kitty.
the most likely transfer is keane and maybe barry… and if they end up wearing a red shirt i would be quite happy…. as long as we dont have to hear players names like shitty downing or milner, who actually isnt that bad but not the quality we need….
bring in 2 wingers and play babel up front with torres, thats what i say!!
MORA - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:36 am
Buy Eto’o
Ash - July 22nd, 2008 at 2:08 am
keane and barry this is typical from banitez has no clue alonso is billion times better then barry. and keane while is good play is to old. when i talk to liverpool supporters they are actually pleased about these possibilities please get a grip aguero would be player to partner torres not keane. and if u are wandering about the money to buy him well let me think how much did benitez spend on crap such as crouch, pennant, kuyt, kewell, degen, dossana, and numerous other failures. Benitez is luky he bought torres otherwise his transfer policy is quite frankily a laughing stock. if liverppol are seriuos about premiership they need likes of aquero and not barry’s or keane’s.
there is plenty of talent out there but yet again managers such as benitez and alex fergusen love to waste their money. they best manager in terms on transfer policy is wenger. take a look at his record buys quality henry, anelka, veira, nasri, fabregas all for peanuts. it is because of wenger why arsenal play such attractive football becuase he buys quality. man u, chelsea, liverpool buy 1 or 2 quality players every now and then ronaldo, torres, essien we dont not but quality all the time so lets all take a leaf out of wengers book
Croco Bob - July 22nd, 2008 at 4:19 am
If we buy David Villa, where the fuck you gonna play Gerrard?? Substitute? or Goalkeeper?
Janindra - July 22nd, 2008 at 4:56 am
you have to accept the fact that the Two YANKS donot want to splash money to buy world class players. Muphy is right: RAFA doesnot receive the backing he deserves. The two yanks want to sign only one world class player per season yet they dream of winning the title. I don’t know how liverpool are really unlucky to have these two idiotic guys to control the club. They should receive an idiotic Idea Award of the Year really. My message to Liverpool fans: Read Murphy’s opinion carefully. Be realsitic. Don’t misplace your confidence. With the current players you have, we will end up finishing FOURTH again. All blames should go to the two idiotic owners!
Triveni - July 22nd, 2008 at 5:05 am
Ash you’re retarded, Degen was a free transfer. And Villa won’t happen, and hopefully neither will Barry. David Silva should be the real target, with Keane coming in second to him.

At Liverpool we do not count Carling Cup goals or goals scored in frendlies ! Also we do not give out medals or organise victory parades for beating arsenal !

WE ON THE KOP DO NOT WANT Robbie “10 Goals per Year” Keane but thanks anyway !

It baffles me how everyone seems to be focusing on the 2 Davids so much. I appreciate that they are fantastic players, but you have to ask yourself, if they are that good, then why havent they won more with there own club, and why are they being off loaded. for me personally 3 words would do the trick for Liverpool. Shaun Wright Phillips
henry - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:32 am
please let us forget about David Villa, because the amount is too much for LFC and remember he was only the tornament favorite, and dont be surprice that after buying Villa With that amount Torres will be better than him, we only need a good suporting striking partner for Torres, Etoo or Keane will be the good for Torres, Etoo is not a greedy striker and he is more better than keane, if we can not afford Etoo we can go for Keane beacause he is also good in scoring and he is LFC fan
henry - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:37 am

paul, you’re an idiot and clearly know nothin about football. alonso isn’t as good as barry, he’s too slow and reliese on his passing too much, and always gets tackled with the ball.As for buying Villa and Silva, i just want to give you a bit of an update so listen carefully you mug, we can’t afford both, because the yanks dont wanna give us any money, go and play on football manager and leave the discussing up to the adults , and another thing stop giving LFC fans a bad name.

Champions League £20m
Scott Carson £3.25m
Danny Guthrie £?m
Peter Crouch £11m
Anthony Le Tallec £??m
John Arne Riise £4m
Harry Kewell £0m
If we only got £1.75m for Le Tallec & Guthrie then that would bring our total budget to £40m and that is without other possible sales (Voronin, Pennant, Finnan - these 3 would fetch at least another £10m).
Have faith in Benitez, whoever he buys -

the commitment of rafa has never been in doubt, he is 100% focussed on liverpool (and his own skin this year). its the commitment of the yanks and their wallets that annoys me. we need at least 3 players, so give us the money for them.
R.KEANE
G.BARRY
J.MILNER or D.SILVA
WALK ON WITH HOPE IN YOUR HEART.
jay - July 22nd, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I think that we need two more wingers and a striker.Silva and Bentley should do the job.Keane seems to be a good choice but still Villa is another class.
Weller - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop writing this utter tripe. We are not going to sign Silva or Villa. End of story. And as for those who continue to include Dggen and Dossenna in our so called dream team next season are having a laugh. Both have looked absoulutely shocking in there pre-season matches and Deggen is injured more often than Harry Kewell.
We will , however sign Robbie Keane and a great addition he will make. I’d take him over Villa anyday of the week. He’s a Red through and through and wants to join Liverpool. Villa will be grossly overpriced and is untried in the Premiership. Don’t forget that most of our foreign strikers have been flops when coming to the premier league. Torres is the only success in recent years and he is bigger, stronger and faster than Villa therfore more suited to the Premiership.
weller - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Guthrie has already been sold for somewhere between 3-4million
david elnino - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
separate issue but i was impressed with young insua at left back in the recent pre-season friendly, in fact he showed more than the 7 million italian dossena, albeit the italian is probably far from fit yet. insua looks good going forward and we need that from left back.
Weller - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I agree. I would like to see him given a chance. Fast and strong. THe games i’ve watched him in the reserves he was also very hard working. Don’t ask me why Elnino but i hate this Deggen lad already.
david elnino - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
every player is worth a chance weller, but the very early signs in friendlies have not been good for deggen, not to mention getting injured already lol. bit worrying already as the other alternative at right back is arbeloa, i wouldnt even tie his laces for him. he’s pure cack. only leaves stevie finnan, he’s consistent enough but mite go to villa for the barry deal
Lee - July 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
as i’ve already said if you think keane is a better option you dont know football.
there is one reason why david villa is a fuckin pipe dream its because benitez refuses to throw large money at top players.
i’d spend 20 mil on both keane and barry. any more than that ur a madman.
you have to see the bigger picture. if we dont buy a class A player like david villa and spend millions on barely class B players like barry n keane we’re going to win nothing.
i think takin the risk and buying torres for top money proves that it pays off. you buy a few more top quality players we’re laughing.
and euro 2008? enough said, villa and torres are unfuckingstoppable
Weller - July 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
A few contradictions in your response Lee.
You also suggest that Benitez refuses to throw top money at players which is complete nonsense. He DOESN’T have the money to spend!!!!!!!
But then again I must “not know Football”
david elnino - July 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
i 2nd that weller, lee seems to have a chip on his shoulder. rafa spends all the money he can get, and recent signings off his have been outstanding…
TORRES
SKYRTEL
MASCHERANO
BABEL + BENAYOUN who will become even better.

Biscan,Traore,Diao,Diouf,Kewell the list go’s on ond on. He has had a massive clearout job and we have the basis of a really good team now. Keane will strengthen further and a good winger will give us a good shout next season.

what r u people smoking?? villa is not coming 2 anfield full stop, sum of u r right and villa does take away from torres but for all of u that say u dnt want robbie keane and he’s pants maybe ur just all too young to remember a certain peter beardsley playing for the reds?? and robbie keane is the closest thing u could get 2 a beardsley and most proper reds fans hav been crying out for a player of his sort fopr yrs well sorry those of us old enuff 2 remember the good old days and how we once were, keane is such an intelligent footballer his link play is fantastic, he chips in with a handsome share of goals and is exactly what we’v been crying out for the lastr few yrs..get real lads ur all talkin complete bolox about him bein shit bla bla blah, silva in my opinion is an excellent player but is very lightweight and would take atleast a season to adapt and thats time we dnt have unfortunately, keane and barry would slot right in..and it wouldnt surprise me if at times throughout nxt season rafa tried a 3-5-2 system seeing as hes bought 2 supposedl;y attack minded full backs, barry masch and gerrard in a trio in midfield with keane playing the hole and torres up top which is a system that also nullifies the need 4 out and out wingers, also fitting carra agger and skrtel in the backline 2gether, more options makes us less predictable, dnt be so quick 2 slag players off then when they come good u’ll all be singing their names and sayin how great they r,, u all sound like proper sunshine supporters and if thats how u r y not join the rest of ur kind in supporting chavski or ther scum but u certainly dnt sound like true liverpool fans
Lee - July 22nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
ah no lads i can respect that he’s left us with some decent signings
but youse arent entirely correct.
torres has been outstanding he’s my favourite current player in the world and i think he’s the best striker there is now.
skrtel has been decent but is still young and has a long way to go.
mascha has been class i wont fault him at all he’s a monster.
but babel has had days where he is non existent and is also young and needs to improve.
benayoun i admire but he hasnt done much, he’s spent much of his days getting arse splinters on the bench.
then u’ve got dirk kuyt? i love the man his work rate is amazing but for fuck sake u cant go from 88 goals in 110 appearances at feyenoord to not being able to score with a map and a compass to the goal.
sebastian leto? dont start me.
and spending the likes of almost 7 mil on a relative unknown like andreas dossena is insane?
we need to splash and take the risk at some stage. thats jus how i feel lads.

Villa would be the ideal signing as him and torres would be unstoppable but keane would also be a great addition especially as it would allow gerrard to move back into centre midfield. Bring it on.

The David Villa thing could still happen.
A. Rafa has said he’s on his list. Why ould he be if we had no chance of getting him?
B. Trading Alonso would knock 15-20 million of his price….FACT
C. Valencia say they want a central midfielder
D. All we have to do is not get Barry, trade Alonso and get him for 20mil.
E. Valenica is his old club so doing a deal would be easy
F. Not only can we afford to get Silva but trading Alonso we could get him for 5-10mil.
G. We have got 40mil from hicks not 20!!! + We have 20mil from transfers so we actually have 50 - 60 mil.

Okay Carthorse was probably a bit strong in fairness to him, but Kuyt is torrid, and I’d much rather Pennant got played instead Yossi. Either way we need someone like Silva - he and Babel could swap wings like he and Iniesta did for spain. What a combination that would be.

indeed a possibility silva and babel. kypt defo JUST a squad man. pennent alot of potentional but still to produce the goods week in week out with more goals. if we sold him for £8 mil to release money for a winger i.e. silva, that would be good business. see what happens. defo keep wee benayoun though, super sub and offers sumfin different when needed in tite games.

I think Yossi and Kuyt need to be offloaded for funds re Silva. Ideal team for next season would be:
Reina
Arbeloa Carra Agger Dosenna
Mascherano
Silva Babel
Gerrard
Keane
Torres

that would be a decent line up. dossena has been woeful in the friendlies, hopefully he is just lacking fitness. tell ya want, young insua will push him all the way for the left back spot, he’s great going forward. ive been soo dissappointed with arbeloa at right back, he needs a far better season. hopefully keane will sign this weekend to join up with the squad to head to spain for the friendly wednesday.

I like Arbeloa, I think he will really develop this season. Yeah Insua looks good but Dossena is great, think he’ll be a revelation.
I think Keane will sign this week, but I really hope Rafa lets go of the Barry obsession. Alonso is better and the money would be wisely spent on Silva, a player who could give us much more attacking potency.

gota disagree there nick. i think barry is far better suited for the hussle and bussle of the premiership than alonzo. he is more athletic and totally suited to play alongside gerrard in the heart of the liverpool team. alonzo awesum passer of the ball. id personally be greedy and have them BOTH in the squad as mascherano is away for the start of the season, my line up for first match away to sunderland.
PEPE
DOSSENA
AGGER
SKYRTEL
CARRAGHER
BABEL (if we havent got silva)
BARRY
ALONZO
GERRARD
R.KEANE
TORRES

To be honest I think Alonso has got a miles better passing game than Barry, and if we play the 4-5-1 formation like we did last season, with Alonso and Masch behind the attacking 3 midfielders then I’d always have Alonso as he’s better defensively than Barry. I agree that a Barry-Gerrard combination would be great if we played a typical 4 man midfield, but we dont, we play 5 man, and if we did play a 4 man midfield it would/should be a diamond, so unfortunately Gerrard wouldn’t be alongside Barry in the way they are with England. I do like Barry, I just think we need Silva and Keane before someone like him as we already have Alonso who is more than capable.
Also, the problem with having Carra at right back is simple - he can’t cross a ball or beat a man. He is an out and out classic defender, perfect for Centre-half, but give him the ball and he always plays it square! Finnan, Arbeloa and Deggen can put a cross in and beat a man which is what you want from a wing-back.

INDEED, but different formations are required for home and away matches. i’d have it a bit tighter for away games, so a bit of steel from carragher aint so bad, although he certainly isnt an attack minded defender in the full back position, so he could feed the ball to the midfield and wingers to created the crosses. if we are for buying keane, then i believe rafa will be going for a 4-4-2 formation, hence my starting lineup for the sunderland game. with gerrard pulling back into midfield to pull the strings and create chance for elnino and our new number 7 robbie keane. we need a decent squad so, money permitting both alonzo and barry in there would be a big plus.

Yes I see what you’re saying, I just don’t think there’s any point having Carra at wingback, especially if we don’t sign Silva as he’s have to pass it to ‘do nothing’ Kuyt!
I think the most crucial signing is Silva. After that I really couldn’t care less who we got, but for me Silva should be top of a very short list. If we get Milner or someone like that, as I’ve already said on this site, I’ll hang myself!
