Liverpool legend Shankly vs Liverpool legend Paisley: VOTE NOW!
by Mr Comfort on July 22nd, 2008This is your chance to pit your wits against fellow readers and vote on which of these two legendary managers is the BEST!
Part of a hugely successful COS series, but also worth noting that this very tough-to-call topic is also the basis of a great debate show on LFC TV, why not check it out by clicking here.
Liverpool legend Bill Shankly’s impact on the club can’t be measured by mere silverware success alone, although he brought many a trophy back to Anfield, but should also be charted by the inspiration and determination he brought to the club over the 15 years he managed the club. Quite simply a phenomenon who will never ever be forgotten by the Merseyside club’s fans.
Bob Paisley lived and breathed Liverpool Football club for an incredible 44 years as a player, coach, manager and even physiotherapist. In the nine years at the helm of the club, he managed an incredible 19 trophies, including six league titles and three European cup triumphs. A truly outstanding servant to a club he so dearly loved.
VOTE NOW by simply cutting and pasting either name below into the comment box with a word or two on why you made your decision. This is indeed a tough call as both have been so hugely influential in making Liverpool the institution it is today.
Good Luck!
SHANKLY
OR
PAISLEY

Paisley perfected what Shankly started so : PAISLEY

Paisley by a whisker, in my opinion.
bgudg - July 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Daz said it completely correctly. Shankly got the ball rolling and Paisley continued on perfectly in the correct fashion.
By purely silverwear though nod has to go to Paisley.

PAISLEY
Dickiered - July 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
PAISLEY - he never had any managerial experience yet won so much, difficult to assess as he might not have done anything if Shankley had not built the club like he did.

Both were great managers but for me its PAISLEY because
1. did the impossible & took over from Shanks
2. like Shanks built several teams
3. won 3 European cups (oh & 6 titles in 8 years 1976 to 1983, 3 league cups, 1 uefa & several minor trophies)
4. Replaced King Kevin with King Kenny
5. Created IMO the greatest ever Liverpool side, the 1978-79 team. Beat Spurs 7-0, Derby 6-0, Man City 4-1 from what I remember. Scored 85 goals in the league, 68 points (2 for a win) & only conceded 16 goals in 42 league games.
7. Bought Dalglish, Hansen, Rush, Whelan, Lawrenson, Souness, Neal & a host of other legends.
8. In his final season Liverpool were unlucky not to win all 4 major trophies.
9. Remained a truly humble man.

Shankly put in the foundations and Paisley built the house! Coffee and cream spring to mind. Why compare two great men, to do so would mean looking for imperfections or a weakness.Best to cherish their memory and be forever grateful. Shanks and big Bob lived their lives for liverpool fc and never aspired to be better than anyone, their goal was to make Liverpool the greatest club in the world and they both succeeded in equal measures. the answer is infinity if you could solve this you could become assistant manager and help rafa win everything fo ever
Dickiered - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:14 pm
you can’t beat winning everything and loving it, Paisley did that for me
RASH - July 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 am
You cant choose between these 2 because Shankley build Liverpool fc and Paisley perfected it, both men did a great job with what they had. Without Shankley there wouldn’t have been the foundations for Paisley to go on and win everything but Paisley had to be great to do it. So for me i wont pick one, they’re both legends, the greatest managers England has ever seen.
