Liverpool to bid for £10m Premier League star: Far better value than Bentley
by Mr Comfort on July 22nd, 2008Rafa is again refusing to give up on a target and is reportedly about to put in a bid for this very promising wide man.
Rafa Benitez is expected to up his attempts in signing Newcastle United’s James Milner according to reports in The Times.
Benitez is understood to be in the hunt for a wingman, after being previously linked with the likes of David Bentley and David Silva, but as of yet he is still yet to sign anyone, which has sparked rumours that the St. James’ winger is a £7million target once again.
Milner, 22, has been at Newcastle for four seasons since his switch from Leeds United, and is said to be looking for a move to a club with more silverware opportunities. (Kop-tv.com)
Milner is a player who is yet to fulfill his potential, although he does have a great deal of talent to offer. This could be a very wise purchase indeed for the Anfield outfit. Keegan is reportedly not going to let him leave for anything less than 10m, which is still a bargain by today’s standards. He has a wealth of experience for someone who is still so young.
The former Leeds man already has 200+ appearances to his name and a move to Merseyside could finally earn him the plaudits that could lead to a first full England cap. Do Liverpool fans think that a move for Milner is a much better investment than the likes of Silva and Bentley, or is the danger that he becomes little more than another squad player?

hmmm….could be another morrientes all hype and no show
i would rather see a worldclass player for years we have been buying average players and where does it get us ? 4th spot every time. :\
go ahead and by him if you want another 4th spot bentitez but if you want to challenge for the tittle you need spend big,
look at manu they buy young talent such as ronaldo and nani how much do they spend ? 15mill + on 17 year olds.
i would prefer to see the likes of silva….
pete - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:10 pm
10m good value are you having a laugh wouldnt pay more than 4m
Steve - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Lets Just say that he is better than the shit we have on the right now
i.e Pennant
Kuyt is not a right winger either, works hard but not good enough
LFC for Life - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm
hmm David Silva or Milner let me think?? No contest and I hope yet another poor rumour that doesnt come true….
jimmy boy - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm
well contrary to popular opinion, i think milner is great player with HUGE promise, he can make space he can whip in a great ball from the right or left, hes strong, hes young, hes got premier experience, and lets face it a better prospect than pennant who has a troubled past, is a bit light weight and all huff and puff, fringe player at best, milner and kuyt battling it out for the right wing. Two strong clever players commited to the cause, id like to see rafa bring him in and fulfil potential, but wouldnt pay anymore than thw 7mil prev mooted/
plamen - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:29 pm
milner… not good enough for newcastel
weirpig - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 pm
milner isnt a bad little player a for the money we have to spend not a bad purchase . ok if i were to be honest a world class addition would be better but we simply do not have the money his purchase would give us valuable width that we lack a nd at 22 years of age gives a player that still has a lot to offer and with rafa and the backroom staffs experience could develop into a very good little player ,my only reservations on the purchase is for the same kind of money swp could also be a option and perhaps would be a better one, although dont know if he would give us the type of industrias running that rafa wants either way trust in rafa im sure a top 3 postion beckones.
Anonymous - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 pm
hehe, rafa makes me smile!
david l - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:54 pm
cant help but think that everyone wants a lot, for not a lot these days, maybe a younger cheaper player could be moulded into a true red. Not an over priced stop gap, good for a couple seasons
dibbler - July 22nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
i think he could be a good buy for us he is a solid little player and far more consistant than what we have at the minute also just a kid at 22 rafa could work his magic on this boy well worth the small gamble these days 10m is peanuts.
carra fan - July 22nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
James Milner is a good player, a strong yorkshire lad that would run thru
brick walls for whoever he plays for. If we where to sign someone like silva for maybe 20 million quid how do we know what we are getting, he
may get here and get kicked on a cold midweek night and never play again (morientes anyone?). As rafa says “We need player who are hungry and weant to come here and win” and Milner is certainly got the right attitude! But for the right price of course.

He’s not good enough. I’d rather keep Pennant, or get Aaron lennon, who seems to be out of favour at Spurs now, but he beats players for fun, and everyone seems to have forgotten that.
tommo - July 23rd, 2008 at 7:46 am
could be good signing.
larry - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:13 am
I’ve never watched a game where he’s not given 110%. He has a great cross, can beat a man, scores good goals, is fairlyv pacey, but most of all he’s an absolute trooper. The problem is that Benitez will ruin his potential just like he has ruined any potential that Pennant may have had. I would be more than happy to sign milner but I would be absolutely disgusted if Benitez spends 10m on him just to let him get a few splinters in his arse.
mark - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:44 am
milner has great potential and was easily newcastles best player last year. but if we do get him either pennant or benayoun would have to go. 10m sounds a bit expensive though.
daboy - July 23rd, 2008 at 10:04 am
milner isnt better than Bentley thats why he is cheaper and younger fine cant get Silva or the likes take Bentley forget Barry!!!
Joe - July 23rd, 2008 at 10:51 am
God Mr Comfort you talk utter garbage. If you think Milner is better how many assists did he get compared to Bentley or goals or anything to back you stupid claims this is the reason internet journalism has such a bad name it looks like you sit on your computer and make stuff up, only deal in FACTS. This silly rumour has bashed around a few years now sounds to me like agent talk because ten million is ten too much. Please try harder for your own sake
J - July 23rd, 2008 at 11:15 am
Tell me guys do you just make all this BULL********* up?
Every time its someone else.
bridgey - July 23rd, 2008 at 11:41 am
i like ur style gaz,but were not interested in ur sex life and its pathetic not perthetic.
milner tho,not good enough really,i dont know why we dont put a bid in 4 shaun wright phillips for 12-14mill,bentleys got alot more qualitiy too,but 10mill 4 milner?we may aswel take 4th place right now if were gona sign players of that caliber,4-5mill and theyve got a deal.
Another crap article from Mr Comfort - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:03 pm
The hits keep on coming!!
Paul - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
If only we had a player like mcmanaman in the academy.. unfortunately there do not exist players like macca anymore now.. players who run with the ball, pass 1, 2 , 3 players and creating space for other players at the same time.
matl - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
hmm..i still go for david silva…
matl - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Rafa!!!!!!!!!..we want silva!!!!!!!!!!….why do rafa always buy an average players..can he just once buy some world class players like david silva! david villa! quaresma! and etc..i’m sick of all this rumour that Rafa buy these crap players!!!..haiz!!!!!!!!!!
tim - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I think milner will sign for liverpool and turn out to be agreat signing i remember him at leeds and villa and he was very good.
nick reddyoff - July 23rd, 2008 at 4:01 pm
If we sign James Milner I will hang myself! He is probably one of the worst wingers in the league, and the fact he has spent 4 YEARS at a mediocre club like Newcastle and still not shone says one thing only - “Do not sign on pain of death!” The guy is shocking, I really hope this is all being drummed up by his agent and isnt true!
Greeny - July 23rd, 2008 at 5:11 pm
I love reading comments from those who obviously dont know anything about someone! “He is probably one of the worst wingers in the league”, whatever!! Milner is a fantastic lad with a great attitude, he has ambition and the talent to take him to the top. He is still very young and learning his trade. As a Newcastle fan I would be gutted to see him go! He is super fit and will work his socks off for the full 90 minutes! He has a lot of talent which can only improve.
Ben - July 23rd, 2008 at 5:45 pm
He is a good player, but i think we need a left winger, would welcome him in the team though!
rafaman - July 23rd, 2008 at 5:48 pm
tim ur an asshole, i`ll give you one name harry kewell, he was good at leeds as well
JohnLFC - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
If there is any truth in this or the Riera rumours, this will definately be Rafa’s last season. After signing Torres and Masch, he appears to have reverted to his more usual policy of putting quantity before quality. I look forward to the end of the boring controlling football style that the Rafalution has bestowed upon us. Let’s get back to good old pass and move attacking football. Its worked for the mancs so it can work for us again!
matty - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
well but it this way james milner is still only young and hes a lot better then jarmaine pennant , yosi benyoun so why not sign im es gareth barrys is not that much better thn im so why not sign im e would do gd alongside babel , gerrard no doubt bwt that ???
tom - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:15 pm
MIlner is crap,Newcastle is by far his limit.
John lfc what flowing football
nick reddyoff - July 24th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I agree with JohnLFC; you simply don’t see Wenger, Ferguson etc bulking up their squads with mediocre donkeys. We needed 3 players for the starty of this season - a left back (got Dossena, good deal), a winger (Silva would be perfect as he and Babel could interchange their roles like he and Iniesta did for Spain), and a foil for Torres. This is now likely to be Keane, which would be a great signing, however I’d have liked to see us go for someone like Eto’o, Guiza etc. I don’t think Villa was the right type of player to fit the system, amazing though he is!
And to Greeny, the comment of Milner having a ‘great attitude…ambition and the talent to take him to the top’ is the exact reason he is at a club like Newcastle. If he’s so good why is he not at a top club already? He reminds me of a poor mans Kuyt, and that is really saying something! Kuyt is the perennial ‘hard worker’ - the fact that he has no skill doesn’t seem to bother Rafa. Liverpool definately don’t need another ‘tryer’ like Kuyt! You’ll be saying Damien Duff is the best winger in the league next!
mike - July 24th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
utter wank. you’re a joke
TheLastNoel - July 24th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
here we go again touting mediocrity to kiss frustration and wash in tears again…..
Donavan ried - July 24th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I am sick of Rafa and my follow fans that cannot or willnot see what a second rate manager this man really is. under his management we win one FA cup and on Champions League. Under Rafa we have become what Chelsea were, A cup side. And hear we are chasing Barry like a punter chasing a cheap hore!. forget about buying 4 or 5 cheap players plus barry, buy one world class player, Schweinsteiger,Podolski,Quaresma. I am surrounded by Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Man utd fans and every season is the same thing come the last ten games we are trying to sucure 4th place. if you all remember the season we won the Champoins League we finished 4th to Everton. Be careful it is not the same again this years
Redboy - July 24th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Let’s be honest here. Last season we got 4th because Everton ran out of steam and bodies. Every season we think we are going to make a real go at the Prem title,a dn every season we are out of it come Bonfire Night.
Rafa has taken us as far as he can and still cries for more money despite having spent the GNP of a medium sized country. His signing of Torres was a masterstroke, but let’s be honest, if you saw the team sheet and saw that Gerrard and Torres were injured how many think we have enough quality to beat any of the top 6 in the prem on a regular basis.
Fingers crossed for another injury free season for SG and FT.
And Milner is miles better than Pennant who runs like he’s wearing 4 electronic tags. Wish it had been LFC who had gotten Scolari. And this year I’ll be hoping for anybody but the Mancs.
