Spurs close to £17m star deal: Levy expected to agree bid very soon
by Mr Comfort on July 22nd, 2008Juande Ramos badly wants this Blackburn star, and it appears that the England man has reached boiling point as his frustration over a move continues!
David Bentley pulled out of Blackburn’s training camp in Germany yesterday - as his frustration over a big-money move to Tottenham reached breaking point.
The transfer-seeking England star is waiting for Rovers to agree a fee with Spurs, who have seen their initial £16.2million offer rejected.
Bentley dropped out of last night’s 3-1 friendly loss to Hoffenheim with a calf injury, the second time he has missed a game after not playing in Paul Ince’s debut match at Macclesfield.
The unsettled winger is at loggerheads with the club, who have taken a hard-line decision to stick by their £17m valuation.
Rovers want the “right” money - including £3.5m-rated Paul Robinson - and expect Spurs supremo Daniel Levy to reach the figure soon. (Daily Mirror)
Surely if the difference in opinion is only £800k, then a deal is within reach, at least that is what this source is suggesting. Personally I think the asking price for the former Arsenal man is hugely inflated but if Tottenham badly want the creative midfielder, then I guess it really does seem to be when and not if. Maybe this ‘injury’ will convince the north London club to drop their interest in the troublesome target and look elsewhere? Do Spurs fans want their club to bid so frantically for Bentley, or would this constitute a waste of money?

if we want to be challenging the top four this year we have to spend huge, not shy away again!!get rid of all the rubbish and get Arshavin, pavlyuchenko why waste 17 million on bentley when we can get andrei arshavin who is much better!
Azza does it again - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Waste of money.
Ahren - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I personally believe that 17mil is far to much money for him.
We have Lennon and yes I know he couldn’t cross his bingo numbers off let alone a ball at the mo but he is still young, he can still learn all Ramos and Poyet need to do is train him on his crossing.
I wouldn’t buckle to Blackburn personally.
What do people think?
spurfect one - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:48 pm
agree with simon. but doesent arshavin play a simaler position modric plays. personally i would like to see capel instead of bentley ,a midfeild destroyer is a must.
hotspurs 61 - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Buy Joaquin , cheaper and better
yidarmy - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Bentley would improve us hugely, i think he got 12 assists last year, and that was at Blackburn, then again they did end up 12 points ahead of us last season. If Lennon had had put in some more crosses then maybe we would have some more points. This lad csn cross the ball and shoot, we have no one that can shoot from 30 yards. All in all would be a great addition to our right hand side, oh and he can take free kicks. anyone else no of anyone in our team that can? Jenas very very rarely and Berbatov has scored once from a free kick.
Id take him at £17 mil anyday
andy wade - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:54 pm
any ex gooner is a waste of money but if you must sign one dont be held to paying silly money . 10 million tops not worth a penny more.
mike - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Blackburn have already came out and said that the press reports of a feww around 17-18 mill are a load of rubish and Spurs first bid was around 10 mill. Stop rehashing secondary sources and use primary ones for a change.
TIME FOR A PARTY! - July 22nd, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Has anyone including Blackburn or Spurs ever officially said Spurs had bid for Bentley? To my knowledge Blackburn said that Aston Villa and another Prem club not named had bid and that both had been rejected. The media have assumed that club was spurs.
tonykoay - July 22nd, 2008 at 7:01 pm
I dun think this is a smart buy…. I rather looking for someone else for that kind of amount, which I can bring in 2 quality player.
big stu - July 22nd, 2008 at 7:19 pm
This is a young England player who will only get better and knows the league well—i think he will be a good buy even if we have to pay 3/5 mill over his real price—lets face it if Liverpool pay 20Mill for Keene they will be paying 10mill over the odds—–thats how it is!!!!
C.O.Y.S33 - July 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
bentley good player not 17mill but why is robbo only 3.5mill should be 6mill anyway i thougth bentley was in is last year of is contract if thats true then wait get him for nothing next year on the striker front we will get the money for the main two villa, eto one of these two and hunterlaa sorry about the spelling then we havetwo new strikers plus bent and perkart give him a chance
Masochist - July 22nd, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Bentleey is a difficult character, like Chimbonda (and Mido before him). Best to avoid, especially at excess price Blackburn want. We need a defensive midfielder far more than Bentley.
Giler - July 22nd, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Bentley is 1 year into a 4 year contract. I AGREE Hunterlaar would be a great buy and so would capel to be honest i would love villa or eto but i would be happy to see any of these signings.
2e-thfc - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:03 pm
bentley plays well every game scores quite a few gols , is gr8 at set piece and haz 10 times beta cross than lennon, if im honest i cant see why u lot are complaining bout bentley who is clearly proven in the prem. i wnt bentley soo badly so he can show u lot hes worth 17 mill coz in my opinion he defo is. but w/e happens … spurs 4 4th all the way!! COYS
simmo - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 pm
why does every one think arshavin is so good, he had a few good games a the euros and the semi final he was shocking, and he is getting on with no prem league experience, bentley will be a good buy young and playing his socks off for england call ups…..
LFC - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
why dont you just buy cheap crap because if any of your players have a decent season they want to move to a big club, mid table mediocrity again im afraid
XCROSSX - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Completely agree with Big Stu, Bentley a young, quality, ENGLISH player who has been playing well in the premiership and wont need to adapt to the way we play over here unlike a foreign player just arriving!
Wouldnt mind Villa coming in though him and Dos Santos Up Front would be pretty sweet!
makdeyid - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 pm
First of all i dont know why they call it the big 4 as the team that finishes top are the champs and the team that normally finishes 4th ie Scouse shite that dont have money to spend which big clubs would normally have every season call them selves a big club. we as spurs fans except that we wont win the championship but i think its about time you scousers realise that neither will you guys and first of all concentrate about getting yourselves out of dept, and then come and talk to us. Its funny how this mid table team as you call it have more money to spend the you have!!

Love the smug LFC. From what I hear in US financial circles Hicks is struggling. Hope keane gets his money up front. Waiting for the bailiffs to appear on Merseyside. Great to see them hide when they are humiliated.
kieran the yid - July 22nd, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Guys what i can see with all these signings we are going for and got, there is one thing they all have in common, they are all winners who work hard every time i see them, yes,Bentley included !!!,so i hope we get more of them ,as for those other two ……thanks but we are moving to the next level see you in the champs league !!!! coys.

In a way the LFC cunt is right. The Russian twat has already said he likes Barca and just like Berba he’s gonna open up his legs for them if he has a decent year at Spurs and Barca come calling.
zulkifly hairi osman - July 23rd, 2008 at 2:20 am
waste of good money..lennon is here to stay…his crossing is not that bad …only average and he is still young and time is on his side…we don’t need Bently…spurs need a Roy Keane or a our own legend Dave Mackay in the middle…we already have elephants, deers and now we need a lion to do battles against our enemies.
i hate ars5na1 - July 23rd, 2008 at 6:53 am
asharin is risky ie. rebrov..new country , he could waste a season settling in..bentley less risk ..londoner.. prem exp..class act.. for me bentley would be step foward..if robbie worth 20m..bentley worth 17m.we gonna ply 4..2..3..1..next year modric main man
glen - July 23rd, 2008 at 7:39 am
yidarmy r u serious? no one in our team who can take set pieces? think a little harder.
graythfc - July 23rd, 2008 at 7:52 am
All this talk of a defensive midfielder, I think Hudd is going to be outstanding this season, I was over the moon when I heard he had signed a new 5 year deal. The club don’t offer long term contracts to fringe players. If there is a better passer of the ball in our team then I would like to see him and have you ever seen anyone who can hit a ball as hard as he does and keep it straight and low. Hudd is the man this year, reckon he will get player of the year, or come pretty close.
glen - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:11 am
LFC we dont buy cheap crap because we arent scousers. you sound scared to me. whats wrong? maybe you’d like the players we’re linked with a little more than keane??? you are miles behind the top 3 and only gerrard and torres ahead of us, and if our captain played the same amount of games as yours, wed only be torres short. the thing is, we’re safe as a club if we don’t finnish in the top 4 and you really arent. not only will you’re club turn to shit if u dont have the lure of CL football but with one transfer window in the CL we will become much much better than you because of our spending power. id probably act like a cunt too if my team failed to improve at all within the past few years (torres being the exception).
glen - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:28 am
graythfc i agree, huddlestone oozes class and no doubt ramos knows it. at first when ramos was on about hudds fitness/weight i thought it was kind of cruel as he didnt seem to have him in his plans. but ramos knows what hes doing because IMO all hudd needs to be world class is decent pace because i think thats the only thing thats missing from his game both defensively and offensively.
Banger - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:36 am
Bale will be scoring freekicks left, right and centre this season! Still would like bentley to join tho as he can provide the service from the right and chip in with a few goals!
Jima - July 23rd, 2008 at 8:50 am
Bale will be our Free Kick specialist. (Seems some of you have forgotten about him - and his unbelievable goal against the Gooners in Sept last year).
I say go for Bentley. I’m in complete agreement with the guys who point out that he is English and will not need a ’settling in period’. Although I do question if we actually need him - in addition to Lennon. Would be good for cover (and UEFA), but can he play in the centre as well?
bobspur - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:02 am
Look boys I have stated previously thay if we want a top 4 finnish then Bentley, Capel and Santa Cruz should be top priority, with these three on board the system Mr Ramos wants would flourish and pay huge dividends with goals aplenty. The impending departures of Berps and Koono should worry none of you true yids providing a striker of the same quality as Cruz or maybe even Eto, Villa or the mighty russian appear on the scene to compensate. One other thing that people seem to forget is that with a run under his belt our very own Buster Bent could possibly supply the goals this coming season as even with the few chances he got last year his strike rate was more than comparable to Berpo marx.
number26thekingofwhitehartlane - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:06 am
Bentley’s worth £25M if Robbie’s worth £20M. Get him Juande. LFC, get off this blog and go to work, I mean go thieving. Don’t forget to take your prozac, loser.
bobspur - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:15 am
Seems number26′ knows a good thing when he sees it. Bentley and Capel would simply destroy the defences of most premier league teams given the chance. Come on Tottenham, now we’re offloading a few good fringe players splash the cash and get us up there where we belong.
number26thekingofwhitehartlane - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:18 am
Here here bobspur. But what of our defence? No talk of cetre-half back up for Woody/Daws/Leds and whose goona replace the froggy at right back?
number26thekingofwhitehartlane - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:21 am
For the record I was responding to comment 36 not 38
Dazza London - July 23rd, 2008 at 9:29 am
I think if Spurs can get a good strike force before the start of the season we could get a jump start on the Arse and Scousers.
Gooners are getting hit by injuries and Scousers can’t even beat a bunch of part timers from the penalty spot!!
I’d love to finish higher than the hub cap thieves just tro stick 2 fingers up at Keano - the flexster!
Ramosrules - July 23rd, 2008 at 10:47 am
Would love Bentley and be highly excited if we land Capel. Agree Hudd is awsome was thrilled he signed a long 5 year contract and I am sure Ramos will get the strikers needed to fill the void this manager is the nuts !!!
fear not fellow yids - July 23rd, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I trust ramos wholeheartedly to secure a more than ammacable replacement strikeforce. we will be injected with more money from the impending sales, and in my opinion if liverpool pay 20mil (or there abouts) for keane we are getting a good deal. Yes, a wonderful player he is and has been, but loyalty is few and far between these days so he can go join the scousers. As for berbatov, we all knew that was coming, aurevoir and thanks for a good couple of seasons. the squad is already stronger, the signings have been shrewd and Ramos has a certain pulling power that our club has lacked for a while. I see 5th/6th place finish next season (realistically) but possibly the uefa cup in our cabinet, and that is a very feesable way of us getting champions league next season. Ramos is the cup king after all and these players will be hungry. Bentley is pretty much done I reckon, and for all those who doubt him, I think he will be an excellent addition. we are creating a squad with the depth in class, youth and character that will push us closer to the top 4 than we have in years and years. In ramos and Levy we trust, coys.
Hodgey - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Bale is our free kick taker Yidarmy! he’s class! Bentley would be a good addition but def not worth £17mill maybe £12 tops, what Im wondering about is why everyone is thinking that this will be the end of Lennon? He has always been touted as being best just behind the forwards so with Bent up top and Dos Santos Lennon and Bently behind this would be ideal. Modric and Hudders would obv play deeper.
Hodgey - July 23rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I personally think Bent up top on his own running at defenders and holding the ball up for 3 nippy midfielders to get into the play will be much better than Berbshite and Keancnt up top. How many times have we been frustrated by those two wandering around and doing nothing other than moaning! Get rid of the crap and let Bent at the premiership! Top scorer nxt season mark my words.
sean - July 23rd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
In a 4-5-1, with two players for each position, Bentley would be competition for Lennon, not a replacement. I don’t buy the Lennon-knocking, that there is no end product, as that is exactly what was said about Romaldo, but I would like to see Bentley in the squad, and Lennon given time to mature, with a bit less pressure on him.
Is 17 mill too much?
Firstly, is that how much the fee would/will be? Only time will answer that.
Secondly, is it hugely inflated specifically for Bentley? No, look at the price tag for Barry, adn consider his age and the fact that he lokks like being England right wing regular; also, his English-ness may be a benefit if some foreigner-ruly-thing is brought in.
Thirdly, would he be an asset to the team right now? IMHO undoubtedly: he has shown that he can cross and shoot against the best in the Prem. and that is all we need to be looking at.
Yido - July 23rd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Normally I would give my opinion but first of all how do we know this source is true. I’ve heard the rumours but have never acctually seen quotes from Innce/Ramos/Bentley. Secondly leave it up to the proffessional. Ramos is a world class manager so I say leave it up to him and LFC fuck you. Its looks like scousers are going down hill, they have to sell like 3 players just to buy keane. 20 mill is good for us considering hes 27-28 and I know alot of spurs fans are andgry with him, and I was at first but, he been with us for several years so good luck to him. As for Berbatov, everyone expected it. At spurs if I could choose who I realistically wanted it woukd be Bentely, Santa Cruz, K.J huntelaar,Arshaniv, capel and Veoslo (only two of those three strickers).
Yido - July 23rd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I know what I said but I just have to give my opinion I think we are quite desperate for a winger since malbranque seems to be leaving so although he’s only worth around 12mill i don’t think if we pay 17mill it will put us in debt which can’t be be said for some clubs…
Benny - July 23rd, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Hey LFC, go fuck yourself
SpursForLife - July 23rd, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Alright
Gomes in goal
Bale left back
Woddy centre back
King centre back (captain)
Hutton right back
Dos Santos left mid
Huddlestone holding centre mid
Modric creative centre mid
Arshavin attacking centre mid
Bentley right mid
Palyuvchenko/Santa Cruz/Bent lone striker, holding up the ball and getting some goals
That right there is a top 4 team if I’ve ever seen one.
Judgeboy - July 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Who says Ashavin is so good? Overrated, all this based on 2 games in Euro 2008!!!
spursnut - July 23rd, 2008 at 4:39 pm
As Much as LFC is a cunt, he has got some truth in what he is saying, im getting sick of watching us get good players make them big players thn watch them piss off to your manures and chelskis and arseholes etc, We need to stop being a feeder club, I would keep berbatov and if he dont want to play then we do have a reserve team too, I would rather waste the £11mil we paid for him than let manu get him just cos they want him..
Do they same with Keane too, Buy Bentley Buy Capel and go for it, We ahve needed a Midfield Man like Modric for a while too, and we desperately need two wingers, Strick bale at left back/ wing back Job done, although we will need a right back too now with chimbonda going too, but anyway fuck manu fuck liverpool, Spurs need to grow a pair and tell them to suck em.. the cunts …..
mel - July 23rd, 2008 at 6:04 pm
I WOULD RATHER SEE CAPEL OR ARSHAVIN THAN BENTLEY. FOR ONE THING THEY GOT MORE EXPERIENCE IN EUROPE AND VERY SKILFUL.
Muppets - July 23rd, 2008 at 6:21 pm
The cocks who think Andre Arshavin is better than Bentley because of THAT game against Holland in Euro 2008 are fucking muppets.
.
You could just as easily say he is shit because of how crap he played in the Euro 2008 semi against Spain.
.
Or you could judge him by the Sweden game and say he is pretty average. Scored 1, missed a sackful.
.
The truth is, he IS an average player that pretty much most of you muppets have never seen play outside of Euro 2008 and you’re all basing your opinion on the Holland game.
NY Spur - July 23rd, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Sorry for borrowing your Layout SpursForLife.
This is my ideal team.
Gomes in goal
Bale left back
Woddy centre back
King centre back (captain) Gunter as back-up.
Hutton right back
Cappel left mid
Huddlestone holding centre mid
Modric creative centre mid
Dos Santos attacking centre mid
Bentley right mid
Eto - Target man.
SpursForLife - July 24th, 2008 at 3:40 am
Hey hmmm
I don’t think we will get Eto’o. But apart from that ur team looks good too, I just hope we get to see Huddlestone have a big roll in the Tottenham midfield next year
JD - July 24th, 2008 at 4:27 am
FAR TOO EXPENSIVE AND ANYHOW WERE IS LENNON GOING TO PLAY !! TO THE LANE ARSHAVIN , HUNTELAAR , HUTH , NISTLEROOY , BARRY , COPEL , THAT`S ALL IT WILL TAKE TO GET 2ND PLACE IN THE TOP 4 .
sean - July 24th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
4-5-1 and 2 lpayers per position.
=
Lennon OR Bentley
Capel OR Dos Santos
I know some of you don’t rate him (wrongly IMHO, though I acknowledge his inconsistency makes him frustrating), but we still have Jenas. We also have O’Hara to cover in midfield.
So, do the math, Arshavin, as the central forward/midfielder (a role Keaen would have been ideal for if he had been prepared to stay). This means that Capel, Arshavin and Bentley would (primarily) be playing in seperate positions - gettit.
As I said previously, I actually think this would suit Bent’s talents as the lone, direct frontman, pretty perfectly - and from my undersatnding Pekhart can play this role pretty well.
So, I would go with buying Arshsavin, Capel and Bentley, a cover goalkeeper and decent central defensive cover (alongside Dawson).
That should leave enough money for a foray into the transfer market in January if necessary.
