Liverpool sign yet more promising young talent: Rafa building for a bright future
by Mr Comfort on July 23rd, 2008Rafa is going about his squad-building in a very intelligent manner and today he has captured another young hope!
Liverpool have today confirmed the capture of Spanish right-back Emmanuel Mendy on a three-year deal. The 18-year-old arrives on a free from Murcia Deportivo and will compete for a place in Gary Ablett’s reserves.
Petit but powerful, Mendy has also been known to play at left-back. (Official Liverpool FC website)
Obviously it’s tough to comment on a signing who is yet to make an impact, but clearly the success of the young players coming through the ranks and being brought in by the scouting system shows that Benitez and his staff know what they are doing. Clearly this is the clever way to build up a team for the future, rather than simply spending a fortune on this year’s latest young star. It’s a way of building a bright future without breaking the bank. Do Liverpool fans get a sense that their Spanish boss has decided that a process of scouting young talent is a far more financially prudent way of pushing for the Premier League title?

I think it’s great to see so much young talent coming in.
They’ll learn a lot from legends like carragher, gerrard and torres.
Hopefully pacheco get’s some premiership starts, this season. He’s young but so was micheal owen when he debuted.

Aye, totally agree Dave
lfc4life - July 23rd, 2008 at 7:20 pm
i think if we 2 o 3 goals up and still got 20 mins to go in league games i think it be good to have pacheco come on as a sub and build him up from there.
chaz - July 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Its the way forward some of these players will become world class like pacheco and insua, the list goes on. Glory days will be back again soon.
In RAFA we TRUST

Let’s wait and see how many of them become top players for the 1st team. It’s all good and well talking about youth but we’ve had to go out and buy Degen and Dossena this summer even though many think Insua is ready for the 1st team.
Benitez seems to buy an awful lot of young players from everywhere, but we haven’t seen any make a big impact in the 1st team yet. IF/When they do we can sing about the quality of the youth set up, until then the questions remain about buying so many young foreign players.

agree with the guy above

I understand the hesitance to crown Benitez as a scouting genius just yet, but you can’t deny that he is at least trying to build a solid host of young talent. I think that we will see a young gun or two break into the first team this year, though starts will likely be few and far between for them. But I agree, we must wait and see if these efforts pay off.

its too early but he needs to blood them.
None have impressed so far.

yep Wenger is an excellent example of breeding new players into first teams. Im glad Rafa’s keen in bringing new blood to LFC. Go the REDS

I take it shadda2002 has not watched any of the reserve games last season. A lot of those kids show real promise, and if he’s commenting on the pre season friendlies well that is not a fair test as non of the players are used to the formations being being played. If they where being introduced into the first team it would be like lfc4life says couple at a timewhich is what Rafa did towards the end of last season and none of the kids disgraced themselves.

Dave, (and the others)
Is Torres already a legend for Liverpool…with the likes of cara and stevie G? I mean he had an outstanding year…but legend?
Not Yet. I have a feeling it will come but not yet!

time will tell, if his youth buys are like his 1st team buys then we might as well realise we have no hope

gaga gay. Shut up fool. Do your homework! Mum

I think that Rafa is doing well in spotting youth talent,
Pacheco, Nemeth, Gulacsi are all good young players and now that we have signed david N’Gog from PSG (he might well be another Ryan Babel) and other quality players like Duran and San Jose, we might well have the foundations for an exciting liverpool fc in years to come

nikola saric is a great example; benitez has fended off interest from other big clubs to sign apparently one of the most promising teenagers in the world.he must be able to persuade them to join with a strong promise of success in the near future?!
nick reddyoff - July 24th, 2008 at 11:32 am
I think Rafa is definately doing the right thing in signing young talent, however I think he needs to back this up with more top end signings like Torres and Mascherano. It’s all well and good getting these guys in for the future, but we want to see a league title this season, not in another 10 years time!
I admire the way Ferguson does it to be honest - look at Nani, Anderson, Evra etc. All young guys but good enough to play a bag full of Premier League games whilst learning off the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Giggs, Ferdinand etc. I’ve no doubt all this investment will bear fruits in 5 years or so, but as I say we want a league title this year, and if Rafa doesn’t deliver I think he may well get the boot and all his young academy signings will be have been futile if another manager came in and decided they were all not good enough!
Donavan ried - July 24th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Every season we now finish 4th we will fall further and further behind Man Utd,Arsenal, and Chelsea as for finishing 1st in the premier league is worth £60m, 2nd is £50m, 3rd £40m and everybody else down to 20th picks up £30m, the difference between 1st and 4th a Torres and £8-9m change 3rd place should be a minium.
jake - July 24th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
is he another wenger? building for the future that never comes? he needs to concentrate on winnning a trophy every season not just concentrate on winning trophies in a few years from now. hell be sacked even if the youth players become world class in a few years if he doesnt win something big like the prem league or champs league this season
6th finish from liverpool this season, just inside the uefa cup, although teams like everton, pompey and villa may all overtake them so they’re outta europe altogether

Great to see all these kids coming in….I only hope Rafa’s still around when his youth policy comes to fruition! The Yanks must have faith in him though, otherwise they wouldn’t give him the money to buy for the future. I don’t claim to know a lot about the reserves etc, but from what I’ve seen lately with Darby, Insua, Plessis, Pecheco, Nemeth and Spearing, to name a few, the future looks bright. Hope Rafa gives them a chance next season!
