It’s been a tricky start to life at Ewood Park for Paul Ince. It’s almost as if he’s a knight who has arrived at a castle, only to find it under immediate attack from barbarians, so he’s been busy trying to ward them off with his bow and arrow before they loot the crown jewels.
However, the Blackburn manager can seemingly do nothing to stop Aston Villa from nabbing Brad Friedel, with the American granted permission to leave the club. The 37-year-old clearly wants to end his career with a different challenge, with The Guardian reporting that Rovers are now hunting for his replacement.
Blackburn Rovers have accepted a bid worth around £2m for Brad Friedel, believed to be from Aston Villa, but the American will not be allowed to leave Ewood Park until a replacement goalkeeper has been found. That was the message from John Williams last night as the Blackburn chairman conceded that Friedel was set to leave, with the 37-year-old expected to link up with Martin O’Neill despite interest from Manchester City.
This is surely a big blow to Blackburn fans, with Friedel one of the best keepers in the Premier League. If indeed he is going to Villa, their supporters must be chuffed to have him between the sticks, even if it’s only a short-term buy. The question is, can Paul Ince hang on to the rest of his best players or will the barbarians attack again?
