Liverpool set for £6m bid: Is this the right move for Rafa?
by Mr Comfort on July 24th, 2008Rafa appears set to receive a bid for a player he will surely seek to cash in on as he looks for funds for new arrivals.

Ince is expected to make a firm bid for Liverpool’s Jermaine Pennant as Bentley’s replacement.
And should England man Bentley exit Ewood Park, Ince is said to be planning to replace him on the right-side of the Rovers midfield with another ex-Arsenal winger, Liverpool’s Jermaine Pennant.
Pennant, 25, is rated at £6million. He has not established himself as a regular first-team choice at Anfield, and could find the prospect of a move to Rovers appealing. (goal.com)
Jermaine Pennant has made it clear he would like to stay at Anfield but it seems very likely if an offer is indeed forthcoming then Benitez would surely not think twice about taking the money. After all we are talking about a player who has systematically failed to deliver for a most of his two years at the club. Aston Villa were also after the wide man but it appears that Martin O’Neill is still to decide the fate of his skipper so any move to the midlands seems unlikely at this juncture. Will the former Arsenal man be missed by Liverpool fans?

Pennant is one of the few players we have who can actually carry the ball forward and dribble pst a player. He is goal-shy but to sell him would be a mistake at this point since he is a useful squad player.
Alan - July 24th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
If we get offered 6m or even 2m, we should take it before Ince can blink!
david - July 24th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
IF HE AINT PLAYIN HE AINT STAYIN
Andy H - July 24th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Thing is we need wingers yet we seem to be selling?? I hope by doing tis we can bring in Silva but aso we d need backup!! but £6m is a good offer, I suppose Kuyt and Yossi can provide cover for Silva and Babel if we get Silva of course
roders - July 24th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
This very much depends on what rafa does with the 6m in the kitty, bearing in mind that pennant is a creative winger and we are desperately short of these at the minute…theres no point selling him just to bring in another youngster for the reserve team or another defender…we need quality on the wings more than anything else at the minute…but please, please, please dont waste the money on another dodgy player like sebastion Leto……
Ticky - July 24th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
I’ve been waiting 3 years for Pennant to deliver, but he keeps flattering to deceive. Yes he can beat a man, but his crossing is poor most of the time….and he doesn’t score enough goals either. £6m is a good offer, as long as Rafa uses the money to replace Pennant with someone better. Not sure about Silva either. Didn’t exactly get me off my seat during Euro 2008.
doc - July 24th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Dont think Silva is the answer either
Bill - July 24th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Pennant is one of the few players we have who can actually carry the ball Yes but he then goes and loss it if we can get 6 mil + for him lets lose him.
squirrel - July 24th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
When Pennant moved to LFC he was Opta’s higher passer with around 350+ passes. But as you know he played week in week out before he joined us and we all know what Rafa does - week in - three weeks out. Jermaine is relatively still young.
Rafa had to justify buying Kuyt and so he moved Kuyt to the right wing, when Kuyt is second striker, therefore pushing Jermaine to the bench.
Pennant got us some useful goals too. He can dribble past players. You can see Kuyt can move up on the right wing but when it comes to crossing - he’s not a winger to it.
The only reason I see Jermaine moving is because we will be getting a better winger. If Jermaine leaves - Rafa will have ditched two English players - so it will be two English players in to keep the tight balance.
I dont share Rafa’s view that full backs should come out as wingers and cross, especially when our backs are relatively old and find it hard to track back. Many of the goals we got came from such mistakes.
We need proper wingers and no substitute full backs.
EL NINO - July 24th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
BEST TING EVER BYE BYE PENNANT U WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHITE 6 MILLION INCE MUST B RETARDED HAHA RAFA IS LAUGHFIN ALL DA WAY TO BUY KEANO & BARRY!
Lee...LFC for life - July 24th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo keep pennat he is d most under rated player at LIVERPOOL keep him rafa sell yossi instead!!!!!! he’s very quick, our best crosser no doubt and tho he doesnt shoot alot he has a very gr8 shot and he’s not greedy at all because even if he can scoe but there is a player in a better position than him than he pass him d ball not like yossi always want 2 shoot and dribbele and do eveything by himself [tho i have 2 say that his dribbling is very good]…. KEEP HIM RAFA WITH 6 MILL WE CANNOT BUY 2 WINGERS BECAUSE WE NEED 1 AND ANOTHER 1 IF PENNANT GOES
garen simonian - July 24th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
hahahahah yeah we didn’t see much of pennant maybe if we get that 6 mil it will help us to bring barry .of course we will see robbie keane at anfield in the comming days.
Ricardo - July 24th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Lol i dunno lads, 6m seems a little more than worthless.
The lads alright, but I hope Rafa uses the money to upgrade to a better winger.
Carld - July 24th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Rafa is finally starting to get rid of some of the sub-standard members of our squad. Jermaine Pennant is not good enough to play for Liverpool and if we can get 6m for him it’s a good bit of business. The owners are clearly unwilling to provide us with significant transfer funds so the only way we can afford to improve the squad is by selling our weaker players. Carson is now playing at the level he should be with WBA, and it’s time for Pennant to drop down and do the same. The money we receive for these two, along with Guthrie, will go a long way towards paying for a genuine quality player to make us a better side.
Dunc - July 24th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Liverpool aren’t set for a £6M bid, Blackburn are.
Is this a good move for … Pennant?
Don’t think Rafa is moving anywhere.
Ferdy - July 24th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Well Dunc your actually wrong, Liverpool are indeed set (as in ready to receive) for a bid. It can actually be used in both directions
Anonymous - July 24th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
not being funny but pennant has always shown promise! yh he may not be everyones favourite but there’s no one like him at liverpool he adds a whole new dimension to the team when he’s on the field!

rafaman - July 24th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
if pennant goes anyone know of a decent winger silva ain`t gonna happen we ain`t got the money thanks to those tight fisted yanks wish they`d fuck off to blackburn
Roy - July 24th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
We need a replacement or someone lined up before we even think about selling pennent. He has a lot of talent just needs a good run out!
sassy - July 24th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I think it would be a mistake for Rafa to sell Pen at the moment, cause we seem to be getting rid of more players than we are bringing in. I didn’t rate him at all when he first came to the Reds cause he was basically shit, and constantly giving the ball away.
He since proved to have some good attacking skills, an a bit of fire (not goal fire, but fire, fire) which is what we need, even though he doesn’t always get a game, which I think is most of the problem with Liverpool - instead of buying players we’ve never heard of with money we haven’t got, why not use the players you’ve got sitting on the bench week in and week out to their full potential!
The move is probably the best for Pennent, if he wants game time, an if we can use the money to get Barry or Keane then fair dues but I don’t think its a good idea if Rafa is gonna spend money more crap, goal-shy pricks, like Voronin (yes, I know he came to us on a free, I’m just making a point.)
Dunc - July 24th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Ferdy: But I don’t own an actually wrong?!?!? Perhaps you meant you’re?
Torress - July 24th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Is hasn’t been easy for Pennant at Liverpool, but still, he’s the best winger we have.
And if we want to sell him, and improve our wing options, we have to buy 2-3 wingers better than Pennant.
Can we afford that?
I think he should stay a for another season.
DaRev - July 25th, 2008 at 2:04 am
I think Pennant has potential he has all the attributes pace, skill but yet he does not deliver consistently i think maybe that has to do with all the rotation we buy players have them for a season or two don’t player them regularly expect them to perform while not getting a good run in the team and then sell them waste of time really we do need quality from the wings and we are not gonna get it with Kuyt who is in fact a striker who cannot score for shhhh and Benny who drifts infield so Rafa needs to bring in quality to compete with the other big three we are talking about the likes of Quaresma, Simao, Ribery, Silva, etc……
Red's Fury™ - July 25th, 2008 at 2:18 am
Oh no! Another ex-Gooners reject. Please don’t swap Pennant with Bentley, just sell him to Blackburn on a cut-price £4-5million.
We need a good winger, pry Davis Silva from Valencia.
YNWA…
0500Silva - July 25th, 2008 at 3:13 am
get rid of him ASAP….please buy him Blackburn…please omg 6 million pounds lol….man we were planning to send him out with Voronin on a free
but 6 million we’ll take that gladly
TotalRed - July 25th, 2008 at 3:47 am
Pennant is crap. he gives away silly fouls and is selfish on the ball. sell him. Riera is too much a light weight. We need an flair player that is strong on the ball.
l f c - July 25th, 2008 at 4:36 am
No, it’s time for JerP to sling his hook. He isn’t playing enough for us to turn down a 6 mil offer, and he never made the impact on the team we all hoped he would. He had skills, but there are too many parts of his game that are lacking. Having said that, there is no replacement on the radar, and Kuyt out on the right is wrong on so many levels…
Clement - July 25th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Maybe he doesn’t play much but when he does he has some valuable moments. And he’s great for morale in the locker room too. 6mil is about the right value, but I’m just not convinced about Silva. If we were after Bentley I’d say sell one Englishman for another; I guess it depends on what the price for Silva is though.
After loosing Crouchie it would be twisting the knife to loose the Pen. All the comedy is leaving.
nick reddyoff - July 25th, 2008 at 7:15 am
I really like Pennant and think it’d be a shame if he left as he’s better than Yossi and Kuyt, but if he goes in order for Silva to come then I’m all for it. However if Rafa doesn’t bring in someone like Silva we may be stuck with ‘hard working’ Dirk on the right….yawn!
mark - July 25th, 2008 at 8:18 am
pennant is under rated he does have some good moments, but when you don’t let a player play consistent football he won’t improve, thats what has happened to pennant
Andy H - July 25th, 2008 at 8:26 am
Sell Pennant, Voronin and Arbeloa total maybe £13m?? If Alonso (although would not be upset if he stayed the guy is quality) does go then thats a further c£16m = £29m. From this we obviously have the cash for Keane so thats a given…but the others maybe enough to land Barry and Silva with a bit extra maybe £4m baring in mind our wage bill would reduce with Finnan going the other way?? Could work?? I just think we need class on the wing and with Silva and Babel would provide this. Stevie G, Mach and Barry 2 of 3 I would have thought….I think we need cover for the bloody Olympics!!! what a joke
Brultus - July 25th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Dont understand the Silva hype. I really dont think he would be good enough. just because he has a ok Euro everybodys going mad. Same with Arshavin. Plays two good matches and he is God. He is 27 years old, dont you think he would be somewhere else if he played like that every game?
browny - July 25th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
sell him is is fucking rubbish. useless twat, someone came up with a comment that pennant statistically puts more crosses into the box than anyone.ok thats fine but how about one of his crosses actually finding another liverpool player, that would be nice.i could stand on the wing all fucking day just kicking the ball into the box,no problem.its actually hitting a target this fucking retard cant do.
Stephen - July 25th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Totalred and l f c are spot on.
Pennant is no where near good enough to be at liverpool, his all round game is poor,so is his attitude and work rate thats why kuyt has been prefered to him,but kuyt is no winger by any means!
-his delivery is diabolical and he has as much flair as a pack of halls soothers!!
We badly need TWO first choice wingers!
babel’s got the potential but i think his skills would be better plied up front.
I think a move for milner would be wise,or shaun wright-phillips(for the right).-both between the 1o-12 million bracket and both have the right attitude and workrate that rafa looks for,and above all flair!
I’m stumpt for the left, dunno who’s of the right quality at the right price to bring in.
Just hope we don’t get lennon-he’s no more than a 1 trick pony.
Fernando Torres - July 25th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Dear Rafael Benitez
Get rid of Gerrard, he is shit, bullshit i would say, he is always taking the lime light i hate him. I’m glad he’s getting old now so he can retire earlier than me. I just hope he doesn’t become a coach at our club. Gerrard is a pussy, i would take him down and snog him hardcore if it wasn’t for Gerrard having a wife. Dammnn he is sooo fine.
P.S get rid of him, he’s going to cheat with your wife.
Your Sincerely
Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres - July 25th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
lets just do a straight swap ofr him and bentley!
Rovers - July 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
We’ll have him! its looking a little 50-50 with you guys sell/dont sell…personally i think hes a very promising winger, would just need to work on his delivery just like aaron lennon. sign him up Incey!
kop11 - July 26th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
I hope benitez does not sell pennant and sells bennayoun instead, pennant has pace, trickery and a good delivery he just needs tto be playing week in week out to get the best out of him, pennant should only be sold if th right winger we are getting is better than he is, how benitez sells all our good players every season and brings in average players to take their place i do not know.
how could we have sold garcia last year and kep kewell?
How could we have sold crouch and we still have voronin and kuyt, when even though kuyt has an amazing work rate for the team crouch was alot better than the pair of them but they are still at the club.
Now he wants to sell pennant and keep benayoun? How does that work out?
Pennant is better than benayoun, if benitez decides to calm down a bit with the rotation policy and plays his strongest team week in week out unless they have injuries, suspensions or it is the carling cup the pennant would do very well for us.
we need another good right winger to give him som competition not to get rid of him, we need width more than ever, pennant just needs to score alot more goals to help the team.
Pennant should not be sold we need width, he gives us that more than any winger we have at the club.
If benitez is selling pennant, hopefully he is getting Jesus Navas, Sergio garcia or David silva to replace him otherwise he should not be sold.
