Never has there been a summer where clubs are not prepared to let players leave until they have found a suitable replacement. Sometimes it’s been the opposite, where clubs can’t buy a transfer target until they have the cash from a player sale. It all appears to have worked out for Blackburn and Aston Villa, who have landed themselves new goalkeepers ahead of the new season. Perhaps fans of the latter have more reason to be cheerful!

Paul Robinson has been much-maligned in the past twelve months, perhaps a little longer in the case of his England performances. He started last season as first choice at Tottenham and finished it sitting on the bench for several games and reportedly refusing to train. It now appears he’ll be returning to the fold at Ewood Park in a bid to kickstart his career, with the keeper expected to sign for £3 million today according to the Daily Mirror.
Blackburn boss Paul Ince will sign Paul Robinson from Spurs in a £3.5million deal today – and let Brad Friedel join Aston Villa.
Ince’s transfer negotiators finally made the breakthrough in the difficult Robinson talks as Tottenham sold their former England No.1 – and also wait to agree a fee for Blackburn’s transfer-seeking David Bentley.
Robinson will head for Lancashire today to finalise personal terms and to have his medical, but there are no signs of late snags as Ince finally gets his man.
Does this make the prospect of David Bentley signing for Spurs more likely? One thing’s for sure, Aston Villa have got a safe pair of hands in goal next term, with Brad Friedel consistently one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past few seasons.
