Liverpool manager shocked to hear Spanish ace wants out: HUGE blow to the starting XI!
by offsidetrap on July 25th, 2008Well this is exactly what Rafa Benitez didn’t want to hear when his Spanish contingent walked in the door at Melwood yesterday. After discussing Xabi Alonso’s future with the club in a private showdown meeting, the goateed-one then took the time to talk with each player about their future as expected. What he didn’t expect was the bad news that one Spanish player would give him.
One player likely to leave Anfield in the near future, however, is [Alvaro] Arbeloa, who is understood to want a return to his homeland for personal reasons.
Liverpool should have no problems in cashing in on the defender, whose stock is at an all-time high following his part in helping Spain win the European Championships last month. (Liverpool Daily Post)
I don’t think anyone saw this coming. While the news comes as a total shock to Rafa and the club, supporters should rest easy knowing that Liverpool should get a great deal of money back on their investment. The Spanish right-back made a £2.6million move from Deportivo La Coruna in 2007, so if anything, the club should easily double the transfer fee. What doesn’t look good, however, is the hole at right-back that will need to be filled. Finnan and Degen should fill the role, but most know that Arbeloa looked to finally be coming into his own.
Are Liverpool supporters shocked to hear this news? Do you think Degen and Finnan give the club enough depth at the right-back spot?

How is this a huge blow when Carragher is going to end up with the right back responsibility anyway? Skrtel is too good to bench, and Agger is class. Let’s face it, Arbeloa an ace? I think not. More like fodder for a bid on Gareth Barry.

what shock there as been rumours of his sale for days!

Liverpool are rumoured to be in the hunt for a right back anyways..with or without Arbeloa..benitez knws finnan is a liability , in the champions league and most of the Premiership teams with pace in their teams …and fiinan aint gettin younger..degen is a free gamble he could turn out to be another nunez..or he could be very useful who knws..and is Arbeloa good enuff to be playing right back all season long..and helping us to the title with man of the match performances most weeks..i doubt it…and carra will not be playin at rite back..he hasnt got the pace ..maybe he will play him there againsy lesser oposition..buit his best position is centre back..go ask chelsea about that..expect an astabolished RB to be bought….Rafinha ?
Donavan Ried - July 26th, 2008 at 1:31 am
This comes as no suprise to me,Arbeloa knows what i have been saying for a long time now, it is that under Rafa Benitez Liverpool will never win a Premier League, we have become a cup side. Rafa does not understand or care to understand what it takes to win a Premier League title. Rafa should go.
haha - July 26th, 2008 at 4:30 am
Tosh. Three-day old rumours with a dash of rank speculation. Rafa wasn’t at Melwood yesterday so how did he hear all this in his meetings. So tired of this crap appearing on Newsnow. Utter bollocks.
Lucidtentacles - July 26th, 2008 at 4:32 am
Donavan and Triveni you know nothing. Arbeloa will return to Spain for peronal reasons not because he doesn’t believe in Rafa and as for My Left Foot hows Robbie doing. Word is he’s gone to a bigger and better club =D
mark - July 26th, 2008 at 4:56 am
arbeloa was consistent last season, and will be a big loss for the 1st team as he played in most games last season, all you people who say we won’t miss him are wrong, we have degen who has no Premier league experience, and will take time to adjust, and finnan who is alright but has no pace, and realistically he will be going to Aston Villa. Yeah that makes sense we won’t miss him at all with only 1 rb in the squad, and a reserve
Chandan - July 26th, 2008 at 5:50 am
This is a SHOCKING news. And suddenly right back position has become a liability. Arbeloa had come into terms in governing that position and he was good goign forward too. I don’t remember him making too many mistakes.
I haven’t seen Degen play, but, from what I have heard he needs to improve big time to play against premiership teams. If Arbeloa must go I don’t see Finnan leaving unless we get another good signing at right back. And I doubt that we will sign a right back, I think apart from Robbie, Barry(?) if we decide to sign another player it is going to be winger.
Only good thing about it is we will easily get 5 tp 6 MP on Arbeloa sale.
Jeff - July 26th, 2008 at 6:12 am
dude arbeloa is crap
carra skrtel agger ?
kuyt barry javier babel

sibenik adria - July 26th, 2008 at 6:24 am
Arbeloa is a great player for us. He practicaly covers all of the back line,
Big Loss if he goes and also we’ll need to buy new right back and that would need to be a quality right back.
West Ham bought Behrami from Lazio? To bad, I like him very much.
Dunc - July 26th, 2008 at 6:47 am
I also think Arbeloa will be a significant loss. He has become a settled and flexible defender in our side that can swap sides, get forward and be defensively strong, plus hes young. For the money he will create with his sale, we will not purchase a player with the same attributes and will lose out in the long run. I would proably go for a speedy 20-24 year old up and comer who has shown enough to know he can play but will not break the bank… I expect the leftover cash will be put towards our final purchase - a creative wide man (lets hope and pray!) - maybe David Silva! For all the talk over the last 5 years about our requirement for a player like this, we seem to consistently miss out. How could we even think of selling Pennant at this stage? Who is going to take his place? For 6-7 million who are we gonna get that is better?

My days, can’t read a Kop article these days without the rantings of some bitter tottenham fans.
Sort your lives out fellas.
marcus - July 26th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Although carrager is one of the best players at the club without a doubt
he’s a world class centre back not a world class right back his attacking play, crossing etc isnt good enough
SupaCrazy - July 26th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Arbeloa is a class act an he proved it all da tym..rememba da liverpool vs barcelona champions league match..dats da game wen arbeloa had messi fukd da whole game..he is a class act an a spanish ace..dnt go
Gibbons the hoop - July 26th, 2008 at 8:35 am
“…Is Degen and Finnan enough depth at right-back?”
Your joking! Villa got to 6th with no right back all season! and you ask if two right back are enough!? What you should be asking is two right backs enough for you greedy greedy fans? Why dont you buy Pele and Maradona out of retierment! freakin’ twats…

carra,skertl,agger,dossena
babel,masch,gerrard,barry
keane,torres
i think barry, if joining, will play a lot on the left side as a winger actually, with dossena pushing forward and barry holding back and vice versa..
viking - July 26th, 2008 at 11:36 am
arbeloa wouldn’t/shouldn’t be anything but a squadplayer at a club like liverpool anyways..sell him and try to get some real quality at the RB. gerrard would be one hell of a right back but thats of course not going to happen..
Dews - July 26th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Could give Darby the opportunity to step up, i hope he’s as good as Ablett makes him out to be.

Donavan Ried - July 26th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Lucidtentacles although i,m new to the web i’m not new to frootball and i can watch and game and judge it analytically and without bias, and altough i may not know the real reason for Arbeloa wanting to leave one thing i am sure about is that “under Rafa Benitez Liverpool will never win a Premier League, we have become a cup side. Rafa does not understand or care to understand what it takes to win a Premier League title. Rafa should go.”
kop11 - July 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Arbeloa is a descent right back who would be missed, but i am sure there are some good replacments out there rafa could go for in order to replace arbeloa, i think rafinha for schalke would be perfect, quick, good on the ball, solid and is good at going forward and has champions league experience.
And he would cost no more than 6m, so we should get rafinha in as soon as possible, then let arbeloa go as long as they meet the amount we spend on rafinha to balance the finances.

bridgey - July 26th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
we need to bag barry now,if we dont, then alonso will be off and were a midfeilder down,we need barry!hes better than carrick and hargreaves,he rarely wastes a pass and if u watched as many games as me last season, then youll know that thats wot weve bin guilty of.Uve got javier monstering around, challenging anythin and everything and barry breaking it down when weve got the ball, its a nice thought.
Stephen - July 26th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Arbeloa is completely average. He’s no where near physical enough for the prem. And he’s not that fast either. Poor aerialy. Has a decent cross and thats it. A squad player at best.
And those who think cara is gonna play at rb are fools!
chaz - July 26th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Be good business offloadind arbeloa if it helps secure the signings of keane and barry, plus the emergece of the reserve fullback means we have sufficient cover.
Dunc - July 26th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Hardly shocking news. Degen, Carragher and Darby can cover that position no problem.
Axon - July 26th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Finnan definitely can fill the spot, in fact i rate him higher than Arbeloa. but well, this is football, some players were sold when they want to stay, some players leave when club wants to keep..

It would be a blow to loose him but we would get a good amount of cash for him, he is much better than degen though! we would defiently need to buy someone else!
Hipyeti - July 26th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
If any player wishes to return to his Homeland citing Personel Reasons, I think that the club has no rights to stand in their way and respect their wishes.
Arbeloa has improved over the time he spent at Liverpool and if he does wish to return home then only a high rated Spanish team would pay double what we paid for him from Deportivo.
lfc - July 26th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
With Keane and Tottenham agreeing with liverpool for keane to sign liverpool will challenge. keane will be on 90k a week for those who dont know. Its happening.
But we have DEGAN guys!! Just because he didnt do massivly well in 1 pre season friendlt half you think he sucks? Maybe because you know nothing about football you think he sucks.
azza - July 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
does any one want to buy shola amiobi
Steve - July 26th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Didn’t really rate him anyway to speak the truth. We’ve needed someone of quality for a while now and Finnan has been the best option in years. With him on a downward spiral and Degen still fresh to the league, it’s a good time for us to be out on the look for proper quality. If Arbeloa was to stay then we’d probably leave that area alone which would have been a liability in itself.
Now all we have to do is get rid of that flamin Aurelio.

Couldn’t agree more Steve!!! Arbeloa and Aurelio are both headless chicken liabilities. Let’s be honest, can anyone see Manure, Chelski, or The Arse trying to buy either of these idoits? Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC, Inter? No, I didn’t think so.
Michael@hotmail.com - July 27th, 2008 at 4:29 am
What about Pennant? Get rid of that tosser before anyone else from the squad, he is the biggest piece of garbage in the EPL
kop11 - July 27th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Well if arbeloa goes, I hope he is replaced by rafinha he would be a wicked acquisition to have at the club and if the americans were to give rafa the funds for some serious buys then we could definately compete for all 4 trophies all on fronts.
So if rafa ships out arbeloa brings in rafinha, we sign Barry, keane and Silva this season we will be definate title challengers this year.
