Newcastle take a second look at £8m Argentine ace: Is this the defender King Kev has been looking for?
by offsidetrap on July 25th, 2008Kevin Keegan might not realise it, but his dream of adding four quality players to his squad seems to look less of a reality. With that in mind, the Newcastle boss is trying to prove the naysayers wrong and demonstrate that there are four potential targets out there that want to play at St James’ Park. So he’s taking another look at a certain central defender to fill a much-needed role at the club. Could this be number one of four in King Kev’s quest for quality?
Newcastle United’s increasingly desperate hunt for a new central defender has caused them to look again at the Argentinian international Fabricio Coloccini, a mainstay of the Deportivo La Coruña team, who would cost around £8m. The club are considering a serious bid as they run out of options for defensive cover in the new season. (The Independent)
After scoffing at Coloccini the first time around due to his high £8m price tag, it appears that Newcastle might be ready to bite the bullet and make a move for the Deportivo La Coruña defender. With the club having only signed Jonas Gutierrez, from Real Mallorca striker and Danny Guthrie from Liverpool, Newcastle look to be in a pretty tough predicament, needing another central defender for the upcoming season. While Colccini might not be their first option, Keegan might be reserved to the fact that this is the best he could get at the moment.
What do Newcastle supporters think about the club moving for Coloccini? Do you think £8m is a fair price to pay for defensive cover?

I seem to remember spending even more for Boumsong. If it was worth it then, then perhaps it’s worth for the genuine article.
