Villa manager tells Liverpool that he’s through playing around: Will Rafa pull the trigger for this midfield ace?
by offsidetrap on July 25th, 2008Well the Liverpool and Aston Villa transfer saga looks to finally be in the last stages of its existence. We have Villa manager Martin O’Neill to thank for that, after he gave Liverpool a final ultimatum that should put the Gareth Barry move to rest soon enough.
Furious Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has told Liverpool to get on with their move for Gareth Barry or they will be barred from signing him. (Daily Mirror)
Well that’s a bit of harsh business, isn’t it? It appears that O’Neill is on his last thread with this whole ordeal, and like most, he’d like to know if Gareth Barry will be returning next season fully committed to pushing the club into the top 5. The manager has gone as far as showing his skipper that he’s ready to let bygones be bygones by allowing the wantaway man the chance a place in the Intertoto Cup squad for the Odense match. I think we call that, burying the hatchet!
Do Liverpool and Villa supporters think this deal will ever get done?

Who’s holding the gun? Surely not Rafa and Liverpool. If MON wants the deal done, he should consider lower the price or listen to other alternatives.

Gareth Barry £16m - £18m is £10m too much, Barry might be a good player but he is not world class. and for those of you who claim he is then why did England not make it to the Euro’s? i will tell you why we overrate ourselves WE ARE A AVERAGE SIDE. If we played every game against ever side like we do when it comes to Germany or the Argges we would have won the Euro’s and World Cup long ago. Liverpol need to buy class.

Rafa tell Martin Oneil to fuk off!! Love Jon G.
Guess what you little shite you are getting what you deserve. Oneil’s the manager who took this situation out of porportion…now look at him. Whinning like a little girl.
The balls in our court…no no dipshit…the balls in your court. Now you look like an ass. Starting all this drama and you still have the player on your roster…JACK ASS! Look at the problem you created. You can’t even keep your best player now (because your antics have cued angery Villa fans). They’re mad at Barry. They should be mad with they’re boss.
You reap what you sow. I bet Rafa’s sitting back laughing…and so am I.
Why don’t we just pick Barry up next year on a free transfer? Take that MON you bitch.
Jimmy Jo Patrice - July 26th, 2008 at 4:21 am
This whole mess started with Rafa thinking he could take any player he wanted for next to nothing and have the nerve to want $10 mill for a goalkeeper who he then sells for $3.5 mill, thank god O’Neil didn’t take any of this crap and stood his ground, yes $18 mill is too much, but when you want to buy a player, you pay the asking price (especially when the seller doesn’t want to sell in the first place) Liverpool as great as they WERE are struggling to keep up with the top 3 and know that teams just below them are about to close the gap, with Aston Villa being one of them.

Aston Villa and MON can keep Barry now for sure… as Rafa prepares to hold on to Alonso and Finnan. Arbeloa wants to leave Anfield due to personal problem, that’s left Reds with 1 and only right-back in Degen if Rafa put Finnan in Barry’s deal.
Keep Alonso and ask MON to shut the fark up!

jebote - July 26th, 2008 at 5:13 am
Jon G im 100% with you.
MON is an absolute idiot. yes you have your right to ask for what you want espicially if that player is your best. however if the player wants to go. let him. if steven gerrard tomorow told rafa that he wants to go to barcelona and rafa’s asking price was 30 million but the highest offer was 27 million. rafa would be stupid not to let him go. sure no liverpool supporter, coach, player would be happy but you can’t keep a player against their will.
this whole situation has made MON look like the dickhead that he is and ever since this whole situation was brought out of proportion i have lost all respect for MON.
Jon G - July 26th, 2008 at 5:59 am
thanks Jabote i completly agree
jon - July 26th, 2008 at 6:02 am
Martin, pull the trigger. The scouse wankers could never afford Barry in the first place.
If he wants to leave let him go to a big club, not a bunch of has-been hisorians!
jon - July 26th, 2008 at 6:04 am
Jebote,
If Barry wishes to leave, let him put in a transfer request. Will he do that, No!. His agent wants his greasy mitts on the signing-on fee.
Jimmy Jo Patrice - July 26th, 2008 at 6:09 am
Gee jebote, so you HAD respect for MON, when all he is doing is to try to get the best for his team as is RAFA, personally I haven’t lost respect for RAFA as I don’t know him, but he set the bait (champions league) and Barry took it and fair enough if he wants to go no manager or club should stand in his way, but it comes at a cost, why should a club NOT wanting to sell not get what they want! its all a matter of opinion of what that value is! RAFA is showing arrogance and pigheadedness (and yes you will say MON is being pigheaded, but he has the right to stand his ground), lets see if you have a bad year if RAFA is still there come this time next year I doubt it.
Redman - July 26th, 2008 at 7:14 am
Jon, Absolutely, let MON pull the trigger. He’s got an unhappy player that he’s priced out of the market. Just because Liverpool don’t want to pay 18m for an average player doesn’t mean they haven’t got it. I bet MON has already spent the 18m on players and now is whining like the bitch he is because he can’t move for the players he wants. Tough tit - all you gurney wankers can stew in it. Barry wants to play for a team that will win something not a less than average bunch of twats that couldn’t even finish higher than Everton and choked in the last 10 games. Villa by the way haven’t even got as far as being has-beens..
danny pacheco's left testicle - July 26th, 2008 at 7:49 am
If a player wants to leave your club, then your hands are tied. Its not nice, but its a fact of football life. All you can do is manage the situation, get some cash, and make sure that it doesn’t hurt you too much. Look at what happened to Liverpool with McManaman & Owen – we learnt our ‘Bosman’ lessons very early on.
If Gerrard had gone to Chelsea, it would have been because we were going to get the best money we could – for a quality player - before he left for next to nothing. In the end he decided to stay for the right reasons, and we were incredibly lucky.
If you have a quality player seeking a move, then you should have a number of clubs interested in them and then you get the best possible fee for them that the market allows. Why didn’t any other offers come in for Barry? Unfortunately for Villa, because everyone knows that he wants to come to Liverpool and Liverpool only. Arsenal were interested – and Martina briefly tried to ‘milk’ that for everything he could – but Wenger’s not simple and they don’t have time to waste - they knew Barry only wanted Liverpool.
Same is happening with Keane. How many clubs out there would be delighted to get the Irish forward? Most, I can promise you that! How many bids have Spurs received? ONE! Why? Because he wants to come to Liverpool.
How many clubs would love to have Gerrard, Mascherano & Torres? Most! How many firm bids have Liverpool received for them this summer? NONE! Why? Because they don’t want to leave Liverpool.
Liverpool have a history in Europe – but so do Villa. Liverpool have a great history at home – but so do Villa. Liverpool have a great ground and fans – but so do Villa. So what’s the difference? It would seem slight on the face of it.
Truth is, its where the clubs regularly finish in the league – one has NEVER, ever qualified for the Champions League – the other has NEVER FAILED even to progress from the preliminary group phases – no other club in Europe can claim that – thats right, not Real, not Utd, not Barca, no one! …and thats why LFC are ranked the number 1 club in Europe over the last 4 or 5 seasons.
Even Crouchie didn’t really want to go initially. He was told that he was only going to feature in a similar number of games as last term (and probably what Rafa’s plans were for recruiting further strikers) and he was ALLOWED to leave. Not only that, once he decided that it was in his best career interests to leave, he stated early on that Portsmouth and Harry Redkanpp were his preferred destination. So what did we do? Dig our heels in like little girls and say, “No! We’re not selling a goal-scoring international forward for less than £18M”?
No we didn’t – we quickly got realistic and said to ourselves that there was nothing we could do about the outcome – lets sell him at a mutually agreeable amount (only £11M!) and lets get on with things. Shit! We had the fella banging good performances in for us for seasons, turned him into an international, he’s been a model pro & a gentleman to boot and we even made a profit out it! I know boys, we’ll do the right thing by him and let him go! PLUS, all the fans couldn’t thank him enough and genuinely wished him the best at Pompey (apart from on the 29th October coming and 7th February ’09, obviously!)
Is there anything in that last paragraph that doesn’t or shouldn’t apply to the Barry situation? Well, yes – only one thing - that we can replace Crouchie with better, but Villa can’t replace Gareth. That’s where the bitterness comes in.
If a club can’t offer top players what they are looking for in terms of the level of football, then they have to let them leave for whatever they can get for them or they will lose them for less at a later date. Hard to swallow, but its a FACT!
So if the transfer doesn’t materialise after all, what is O’Neill left with now? A player who everyone knows wants to be somewhere else. A player, who will now just run down his contract – or buy it out at the first possible chance. How much will Villa get for him then? £3-5M? Its not going to be easy to replace him as it is, but with next to no money for him??? Ok, you might still have him on your books for a while yet, but will he be the Gareth Barry you’ve taken for granted for so long? A player who has earnt his testimonial in a club that he has sweated blood for over the last decade – who now feels let down and will be thinking twice about every time he dives into a crunching tackle for you.
On top of the problems Villa already have in attracting quality players compared to the top 4, what professional would now want to come to Villa having seen the way O’Neill has treated the clubs captain, best footballer & longest serving stalwart? Mmmmm, hey?!
Why would anyone shoot an international who has ambitions over and above the Intertoto? The one I feel sorry for is Barry. Liverpool can always keep Alonso.
O’Neill, YOU, truly, have been the only one who has let that smashing, historical club, Villa down in this sorry episode. Sooner or later, Villa fans will work out that YOU are the TWAT. Then what – more of playing the clown footy pundit?
Just recently Liverpool have played a clever hand by just going quiet. They’ve allowed O’Neill to cool down and work his real options out. Now he’s started to sweat and he’s back in the press (AGAIN). If I were Parry I’d make one more offer of £1m less than the highest one to date and sit back – but then again, that wouldn’t be fair on Barry, so we probably won’t!
Outside of this, I also think we’ll get David Silva, in addition to Barry & Keane. I know that this sounds incredible and all of those of you who have been reading the press religiously will not believe it, but how many of you were reading the papers & websites listening to how the Yanks had no money and we were a club going backwards last year – only for Rafa to sign Babel, Benny-O & Torres? We have covered Keane’s fee with sales, we still have Voronin, Arbeloa, Pennant & Alonso (if we get Barry) to put up for sale – that’s another £25M by anyone’s reckoning. Add the Champions League winnings of £20M and the additional £20-30M (minus Skrtel’s fee) promised to us ‘for squad building’ by the owners when they re-financed, and things suddenly don’t seem so tight.
Just wait & see – 08/09 Premiership champs:
Reina
Carra-Skrtel-Agger-Dossena
Masch-Barry
Gerrard-Keane-Silva
Torres
That really is quality!

This is exactly what Liverpool need. To be taught that whineing and moaning wont get them players but Maturity and sense do. Liverpool have struted over clubs this year by using the media and It’s a horrible Tactic and I now have no respect for Liverpool as a Villa fan, Wolves fan and as a Celtic fan, It’s just horrible.

John K - July 26th, 2008 at 8:54 am
MON has mental issuses. Get Barry for £ 5 mil in January or nothing in the following summer. The media were alerted after the fax from LFC was leaked to the Birmingham press (Villa end), the Liverpool Echo reported the story the day after. FACT. It MON who is always using the media, Rafa has been pretty quiet, and only commented when asked directly. Stand firm Rafa, no second rate club pushes us around. YNWA
Gibbons the hoop - July 26th, 2008 at 9:03 am
hmm. 5 million? more like 15 million in January. but Villa are not the second rate club. Liverpool have to get there manager or player (Gerrard in this case) to speak to the media bout wanting something. Not Villa. And before you start denying it… You have.
John K - July 26th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Rafa / Gerrard when asked directly by muck stirring jorno. As Villa players have when asked about Crouch. Still a second rate club (and always will be and you know it). It all started the Villa, dont deny it, MON trying to play big man to Villa fans (head case)

no wonder liverpool fans are mocked and hated by everyone. What a bunch of bitches…
John K - July 26th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Liverpool were voted the most popular second team in the PL. Some people have a real jealousy of the success of the club and revert to sterotype comments. ManUre were voted the least popular club by the way. MON will make sure Villa wont be too popular by playing on the Villa fans lack of knowledge of football (this isnt a PlayStation boys)
dibbler - July 26th, 2008 at 9:59 am
I think Rafa once again has played the game spot on mon said the price is 18m and rafa told him the price we were willing to pay a good price of 15m if you dont accept that bid then good for you but why should we be in a rush or even to let you know if we were gonna make another offer its not that we did’nt have the money but thats what rafa thinks is fair.
If he played poker this would be a beautifully played hand well done Rafa!!!!
Redman - July 26th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Tom t. Is that ryhming slang for tom tit? The only ones whining are MON & the Villa fans. By the way, MON is a whopping hypocrite. Moaning about LFC trying to buy Barry on the cheap and then offering 10m for Bently when his price is quoted at 17m by Blackburn and getting Villa players going public saying how much thet’d like to sign him. What’s the difference Bellwhiff? I’d like to say that Villa fans are a bunch of small time tossers who every one mocks & hates but the truth is your so smalltime nobody much cares about them either way.
jon - July 26th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Redman, John K et al.
Apologies for my weak attempt at a wind up. Redman, I see you didn’t bite so fair play to you.
In my personal opinion, the bad feeling between the two clubs is down to Alex Black trying to broker a deal where he makes most commission. It would seem likely that he was the source of the leak which has gotten not only MO’N’s back up, but also the General and Mr Lerner.
They have simply in the way they thought best.
The man should have his licence suspended.
Anyway, no hard feelings chaps.
King Torres - July 26th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Martin O’neil knows exactly where he stands. Liverpool have made an offer that they have rejected. Liverpool have moved on. MON is just trying to get us to come back with a larger offer and wants to off load Barry now. He has tried to force Liverpools hand with starting rumours that Arsenal are interested and that got him nowhere.
The Chosen one - July 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
danny pacheco’s left testicle spot on but not sure about the silva bit.
I think we should offer villa 4 mil plus pennant valued at 14 mil lol our evaluation. I thought barry had at least 2 years left on his contract are you sure its one? If so we should be buying him january not now, we can cope or when hes on a free in the summer. I cant believe they would leave it till his final year being their best player. if hes in his final year which i doubt price shopuld be 12 mil tops.
Anyway hear comments about pennant and ill say hes so one dimensional that I cant see his side at all. Easily readable, very uncreative and plays too safe, ok he helped crouch, runs around and is a man behind the ball. thats it basically
5 mil and hes anyones kuyte can do a better job cos he reads the game and knows wen to get in the box to finish and hes worth the same price now as well.
I think babbel is better on the right or supporting striker, man he can shoot and is strong but his skill is still poor, id go as far to say hes one of the least skillful in the squad but i see him if he improves as a collymore and more.
Now we can challenge assuming we get barry and keane but how serious it will be will all depend on the winger rafa brings in.This is the deciding factor for me. This will make the difference just like ronaldo does for man crap utd, oops my apologies lol
A very good winger is one who can perhaps play both flanks, have pace, will be the out lay for a counter attack, score more than 10 goes a season and make more than double assists.Strong and a man behind the ball as well as the ability to run at defenders fearing no one!! alot to ask but will take pressure of gerrard and barry. This will turn us into a 3 dimensional team and premiership contenders.
Just my opinion….
chaz - July 26th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Transfers dealings between A Villa and Liverpool have always been commom especially for villa through past seasons gone.
Martin O’neil has treated a great servant in Barry badly and is cutting off his nose to spite his face. I would still like to see barry at Liverpool but think that as a matter of pride we should cease doing business with A Villa untill they get rid of that half wit O’neil.

My god … some of you waste so much energy on NOTHING!!!!
Neither are wrong, nor are they right … what happened was a simple business process, one offers .. the other accepts or refuses … for me we have a stalemate, MON wants over the odds for barry and rafa did try and get him cheap (MON had a 10m offer for bentley turned down some weeks ago … now that is under his valued) so guys, they are ALL at it and no-one is holding anyone else to ransom (really not sure were people get this idea) … MON thought he could make a few bob but rafa didn’t want to over pay …. both are entitled to there position …. just leave it LFC fans like rafa has, and MON should stop the mind games suggesting its up to us, that is odd as we have told them the highest we will go to … end off, so why don’t we all move on and stop this whinging about nothing ….
good luck to both teams next season and AV, good luck in eufa cup ..

Excellent comment’s from danny pacheco’s left testical and from the chosen one.-though i’m not as fond of kuyt on the right as you are chosen one.
He doesn’t do anywhere enough for me to warrant a first team regular slot,he’s a squad player a mon avi.
Think shawn right phillips or milner could be what were looking for, definitely within the right transfer fee region aswell.
I know neither have been scoring prolifically as of late an in fact milner never has,but i definitely think that if he was playing with better players(i.e. at liverpool) he would knock up a few more, possibly the ten we’d be looking for. He’s definitely a versatile player, comfortable on both feet and either flank, aggressive and strong and has a great cross.
If you look at swp when he was at city he got 88 goals in 153 appearances, which by any player is a fantastic tally!
Like milner he is comfortable on either flank, has a little more flair than milner but is not as useful in the tackle or aerially.
Either would be available for 10-12million.

If I were the car dealer selling MON’s next car to him I would be delighted with his attitude. “Just pay what the vendor asks-does not matter if it’s over-priced!”
It will be interesting to see Villa’s transfer activity this season. Will they just pay up or negotiate.
A few people out there should remember that the Birmingham Post broke this story before the Liverpool Echo. So, who is using the press here? MON isn’t shy about airing his views to the press.

danny pacheos left testicle. u r absolutely bob on. i dont think barry is worth 18mill, but like u said thats a clubs perogative to get the best price. the LIVERPOOL squad is young and developing, there r sum quality kids coming thru. two youth cups and the reserve league last season dont lie. PLESSIS will push on this season, LUCAS is a strong competitive midfielder who can just come in a do a job, INSUA has put on sum pounds and will push ARBELOA and DOSSENA this season. PACHEO has looked impressive in pre season, BUT is too lightweight for the premiership for now. THEN AGAIN YOU NEVER KNOW LOOK AT OWEN AND FOWLER.

STEPHEN id prefer someone better than kuyte but hey we all know by now theres not enough funds around. Idealy we need to 2 new wingers but hey seems we are only getting one tops. I think that winger who played for Man city on loan will come riera or something and maybe hell try milner as was said. if im honest with you id say another striker and 2 wingers were our priority this break time. I wonder whether if he gets barry if he`ll play him on the left side of midfield on the wing especialy away from home to keep it tite. Barry can find torress or keane from deep with his good passing ability allowing gerrard to start his surge with them supporting the attackers and barry then slotting into the middle as the attack progresses. mmm getting a bit to technical here lol.
In rafa I trust……
Milner is a squad player for me, ill b honest we should have someone coming through at liverpool fc to that job. Instead of spendind 10 on him ,id leave it to next season and spend 25 on a top class player.
The core of the team is there , all remains now are the 20-25 milion signings each year to improve us.
Yanks SHOW ME THE MONEY !!!!!!
