Everton and Tottenham in the hunt for £9m SOLID winger option: Who will get there first?
by offsidetrap on July 27th, 2008After watching their £11.8m bid for Sporting ace, Joao Moutinho, get rejected to the ground, Everton look to be at it again in the pursuit of a big name transfer target. They, as well as Tottenham look to be hot on the heels of this certain winger.
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
Everton want Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing but face competition from Tottenham. (News of the World)
Downing might not be a big name winger option for either club, but after the season he had last year at Boro, both clubs should probably consider an upgraded option from what they currently have. Boro were currently asking around £9m, so that figure shouldn’t be too far out of either clubs reach. All that remains to be seen is if Everton or Tottenham truly want his services. What do you think Everton and Tottenham supporters? Do you want Downing on your squad next season?

most yids don’t rate hime, but he has a sweet left foot and tracks back to cover well, whivh would work well with Bale marauding forwards imo. I would like Downing, but I think Borough are likely to want a grossly high fee.
John - July 27th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Don’t make me laugh.
DIddy - July 27th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
we are linked with Capel and Downing, there seems to be some distance in these targets. Downing is also linked with Sunderland with the rest of our B team.
yid - July 27th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
last season thought he could be useful take a bit of heat off lennon havin 2 natural wingers but where were lookin 2 go need someone pure class
Spurs forever - July 27th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Downing is the biggest waste of an english plane ticket to any game he ever flies to. He should be grateful Middlesborough don’t realise this and I hope Spurs spend their 9Million on anything other than Downing…
yid - July 27th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
hot some throw back shit from boro
wayne king - July 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
John, that was a well articulated argument! Comments like he’s shit or don’t make me laugh really don’t carry much weight. Do you have a point to debate or any real knowledge of the player to discount my post?
Spurs forever - July 27th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Downing is useless and is lucky to be playing the game at such a high level already
Everton - July 27th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
We dont want him nor do we need him Steven Pienaar is much better.
We are aiming to be in the Champions League buying average players is not going to help us do that.
bluZZZZZ - July 27th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Give him to spurs they’ll buy anyone. moysey isnt that stupid.
Spurt - July 27th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Noooooooooo
Juande Ramos - July 27th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I already told Comolli no to Downing once in January, this time I will have to give him a chinese burn as well.
Spursboy - July 27th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Im a spurs fan and the question is “Do we want Downing?” and the answer is “In a word ‘NO’”, why would we. Hes an average player and Ramos is bringing in high quality players. It would be a waste of 9 mill to sit on the bench, just like Bent. Let Everton have him
Anonymous - July 27th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
LIVERPOOL SHOULD LAND HIM..SERIOUSLY HES CAPABLE!!!
dont make me laffff - July 27th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
downing to spurs? …. no
downing to drown? … yes
as u can tell i think hes a pile of shizz and is not wothy enough to wear a spurs shirt nor an everton shirt as a matter of fact. his “talent” is better suited to the championshit
Theo - July 27th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
He’s all Everton’s. Moutinho on the other hand is more than welcome at lane. He’s the type of player that should be playing alongside Modric, not Jenas. Bring him and Albelda, our CM and DM roles will no longer be a liability.
wayne king - July 28th, 2008 at 1:41 am
I think he’s coming off the back of a poor season, but that he was looking pretty good before last season and that if they were to sell him for £6/7m he could be a great buy. Sadly, he signed a new deal last season and I would imagine Borough would want at least £12m for him, in which case I don’t feel he’s the right man for that sort of money. However as we all know, Spurs have had major trouble filling that LM spot since Ginola left really.
rob - July 28th, 2008 at 2:18 am
spurs dont need him and neither do everton, but i still believe he is a decent winger
JD - July 28th, 2008 at 6:52 am
THE GUY IS AVERAGE GIVE HIM TO EVERTON THEY ARE AVERAGE THEY WILL GO HAND IN HAND TOGETHER , WE ARE A SLEEPING GIANT EVERTON ARE THE ONLY CLUB I KNOW THAT HAS STARTED AT THE BOTTOM AND ARE STILL WORKING THEIR WAY DOWN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EVERTON - July 28th, 2008 at 10:43 am
i don’t understand why nobody likes downing…
even some everton fan or totenham fan dislike him…
he is good at crossing the ball and i think that he will strengthen everton!!!
TOFFEE SCOUSE - July 28th, 2008 at 11:01 am
SPURS NEED AN AVERAGE PLAYER LIKE DOWNING TO HELP THEM BREAK INTO THE TOP 10.
SPURS FOR RELEGATION NEXT SEASON. NO KEANE, NO BERBATOV, NO DEFOE…… NO HOPE WHATSOEVER!!!
EFC for EVER - July 28th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Good Point Toffee Scouse,
Spurs can’t keep the top players and the average ones are looking else where (sunderland). Everton Have had no problems keeping the likes of arteta, cahill lescot and others.
Spurs are trying to buy there way into the top 6 just like liverpool trying to keep in the top 4.
Just can’t wait for the season to start and shut you lot up
mel - July 28th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
TP EFC HOW STUPID CAN YOU GET. WHO WANTS TO BUY ARTETA,CAHILL OR LESCOT? SPURS SOLD THE LIKES OF THEM AND ARE BUYING WORLD CLASS PLAYERS YOU MORON
RAY - July 28th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I GUESS HE WILL BE OKAY WITH EVERTON THEY WILL BE FIGHTING FOR RELEGATION NEXT SEASON.
RAYMOND - July 28th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
WHY ALL THE ENGLISH PLAYERS OVERPRICED?
EFC for EVER - July 28th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Fighting for relegation i doubt it mate. Arteta, cahill and lescot would walk into any prem team at the moment. Why are you shouting Mel and Ray, Pi*sed off about keane.
So what are your Expectations next season you’ve got no one up front.
berbatov to Manu!!!!
coyb
PC - July 28th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Wow ray that was witty!
mel - July 28th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
YE AND THAT IS WHY NO BIG CLUBS WANT THEM .BIG CLUBS WANT TALENT LIKE BERBI AND KEANE NOT B GRADE PLAYERS LIKE CAHIL,ARTETA ETC AND I THINK YOU WILL BE PISSED OFF NEXT SEASON COS EFC CANNOT AFFORD ANYONE
Everton - July 28th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Mel we are on the verge of signing Moutinho who is world class.
Lescott was wanted by Manchester United, Arsenal & Real Madrid.
Arteta was wanted by Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Chelsea & Arsenal.
Cahill was wanted by Manchester United & Chelsea.
EFC for EVER - July 28th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Well we have but a bid in for 11.8mil for the guy from sporting lisbon and johnson looks set to move so there another 10.
It not just that big clubs want big players , its that medioka clubs can’t hold onto there star players.
And the fact that nobody has put a bid in for Rooney, Tevz doesn’t mean there “grade b” players
mel - July 28th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
WERE DID YOU GET THIS BULLSHIT YOUR PLAYERS WANTED BY UNT,REAL CHELSEA YE DO YOU THINK BIG CLUBS COMING FOR SECOND RATE PLAYERS, IF THEY ARE CLASS PLAYERS THEY WOULD JOIN A BIG CLUBS.
MAC - July 28th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
EVERTON NEED TO BUY A COUPLE OF CLASS PLAYERS TO SURVIVE IN THE PL ,THIS SEASON IS GOING TO BE HARD FOR THEM ALL THE OTHER CLUBS BOUGHT GOOD PLAYERS
Anonymous - July 28th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Mel that last comment make no sense.
What your saying is that all “class players” join big clubs. thats bull, a player will come to the perm to prove himself/show what he can do, Have 1 or 2 good seasons a “big club” (what is your Interpretation of a bit club by the way?) may come in and buy them (darren bent)
Stop talking crap
mel - July 28th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
TO ANONYMOUS;;; THE REASON UNT AND POOL WANT BERBI AND KEANE BECAUSE THEY ARE CLASS PLAYERS .YTHEY DID NOT GO FOR SOME CRAP LIKE ARTETA OR LESCOT.
Supertoffees rule - July 28th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Mel you need to ask yourself then why keane and berbi are going to these clubs!! Must be cuz spurs are not big enough for them…maybe they dont wanna play for an average club anymore!!
dan - July 28th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I am a spurs fan but don’t agrete with any others on here. E verton are a top 6 team, they have consistentl finished in that position for the past few seasons. I don’t think we are in a position to comment on evertons status within the PL especially after last season. The fact remains that we made an unsucessful bid for downing in jan, since then we have bought players in like dos santos and modric who have superior ablity to old stewart and both can play in his position. we are aiming to break the top 4 along with everton and portsmouth but in all fairness spurs are the most likely to do that, PROVIDING we draft in quality replacements which i’m confident ramos will do. Downing isn’t good enough for us or everton he can f+ck off 2 sunderland.
J - July 28th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
I don’t know why my fellow Evertonians are even bothering to reply to such inarticulate, retarded and ridiculous comments. You can tell when it’s the school holidays cause all the kids come on. They do make one good point though. Spurs must be on the up this season because after spending a small fortune last year they could only manage 11th. Due to their shocking defence they’ll flatter to deceive once again.
As for Downing, most of the people on here are typical arm chair pundits. They probably haven’t seen anymore of him than what they see on MOTD. And as for all their suggestions for alterior targets, I think a lot of you Yids have been playing too much football manager. Just because he’s rated on there doesn’t mean he’ll be good in real life. It’s a game…. I know your hideously underdeveloped brains struggle to deal with differentiating fact with fiction but give it a go, just the once. Cheers.
Nil Satis - July 28th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
j that must of took you and your pals in your housing estate a long time to come up with, well done I for one support the idea of adult learning and enocourage you and your imbred toffs to carry on with the good work.
Why would downing come to the club that destroys the natural ability and flair a player posesses and replaces it with a’ good work ethic’ everton must be one of the most mundane footballing teams in ALL tiers of british football. I truly believe you destroyed andy johnson, mikel arteta and yakubu. I truly fell off my chair with laughter after hearing you bid for moutino.. You do not have anything to offer a player of that calibre. As for your comments about spurs let’s just wait untill may 2009. you scouse moron.
mel - July 28th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
EVERTON CAN HAVE DOWNING THEY NEVER CHALLENGE FOR ANY MAJOR TROPHY WE WANT CLASS PLAYERS LIKE MODIC SANTOS, WOODGATE,ETC.
welsh gazza - July 28th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Its very childish on here tonigh!
The facts are simple Everton are a better team than Spurs. The league table doesn’t lie.
As for Mountinho, well lets wait and see- If he comes, the spurs fan who claimed Everton have nothing to offer a player of his calibre, will just have to eat his words. Finally please grow up!
MAC - July 28th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
MOUNTINHO WILL NEVER JOIN A CLUB LIKE EFC, HE WANTS A CLUB WITH A FUTURE
Supertoffees rule - July 28th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

billy the yid - July 28th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
downing would fit in well at the spurs cos he is already shite.
we are now a selling club.
mel - July 29th, 2008 at 10:16 am
EVERTON SHOULD GO FOR DOWNING HE WILL BE OK WITH A MIDDLE CLASS TEAM , EFC NEVER CHALLENGE FOR ANY MAJOR TROPHYS WITH THOSE SECOND RATE PLAYERS THEY.
mel - July 29th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
TO WELSH GAZZA ENJOY YOUR DREAMS BEFORE THE PL STARTS, YOU WILL NOT FINISH 5TH PLACE AGAIN/
MUFL - July 29th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
SOME EVERTONIAN SAID THAT MOUNTIHNO IS WORLD CLASS , A WORLD CLASS PLAYER FOR IIMIL. I ALWAYS KNEW EFL SUPPORTERS ARE RETARDED. A WORLD CLASS PLAYER YOU HAVE TO SPENT WELL OVER 20MILL LIKE VILLA ,BERBI,TORRES,KAKA,RONALDOETC.
MATTY -EVERTON FAN - July 29th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Jesus Christ you yids are a right load of wankers, everyone knows Spurs are shit and even your own players can’t wait to get out,you are the crappest team in London and your days of CROOKS,ARCHIBALD AND HODDLE are long gone, you are top ten at best, even with the injuries we had last season we still finished 5th, remember the 1995 F.A Cup semi final ? you were crap then like you are now
RAY - July 29th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
EVERTON WILL NEVER WIN ANYTHING THEY TRY , I GIVE THEM THAT ,BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS BE A MIDDLE TEAM, IF THEY HAD AT LEAST ONE CLASS PLAYER .BUT ALL THEIR PLAYERS ARE RUBBISH
MATTY -EVERTON FAN - July 29th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
You win the Coca Cola cup and now you think your Real Madrid, you are shite,if all our players are rubbish then why did we finish 5th last season ? were did you finish ? are your players worse than ours ?
THERES ONLY ONE SOL CAMPBELL
gettingthereslowly - July 29th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
may be ramos is going to change the way the team plays so keane is not up to the job and he needs funds to get the right type in he also wants committed players thats why berbi will be off .ramos is a class manager and just like any other manager will do it his way ,he will become one of the best managers in spurs history (yes spurs failed to deliver in the past thats been through poor management decisions at crucial times )you will see a more quicker type of football thats the way his teams play .he will try to hit the ground running if he gets his targets spurs have some catching up to do like the rest of the clubs but at least levy is putting his money where his mouth is and trying.
