Liverpool fans look away now: £12m STAR wants move!
by Mr Comfort on July 27th, 2008Well it appears that a certain Middlesbrough winger has once again hinted that his future at the Riverside is unstable to say the least!
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
Stewart Downing has warned Middlesbrough he may have to look for a move away from the Riverside Stadium, if the club cannot fulfil his ambition of playing in the Champions League.
Despite being linked with a move to 2005 Champions League winners Liverpool over the summer, Downing still remains a Boro player, but admitted the lure of playing in the Champions League is tempting.
The midfielder told the Evening Gazette: “If there are big clubs interested in you it is flattering and sometimes you are tempted.
“My mates are big Boro fans and they obviously want me to be at Middlesbrough for all my career, and if we become a top team, a Champions League team, then there would be no question about going.
“But if we don’t eventually make that step, then one day I might have to make that decision. It’s an important couple of years for me.
“I think every player likes to try something new in their career and I’m no different.” (PA)
Ok so given that it’s a racing certainty that Boro, and no disrespect meant here, will not be in the Champions League in the next couple of years, Downing is basically saying he wants to leave. He is being honest in some ways and a little misleading at the same time. Whilst it’s true that there is nothing wrong with ambition there is something wrong about continually talking about one’s desires and wishes whilst knowing that he can not achieve these goals at the club he plays for. Liverpool have been linked with the England international and many believe a move for the 24 year old could be a mistake citing concerns about consistency and ability to play at a higher level as the major doubts over such a move. News has come out of a potential £12m bid from neighbours Sunderland today, but given that Roy Keane’s side is equally unlikely to offer the future Stewart demands that deal could well also fail to materialise. Maybe Chelsea will come in for him and consign him to a SWP fate? Do Liverpool fans really hope Rafa doesn’t attempt to sign the left winger or would a move for Downing not be as bad as all that?

Rafa, please do not bid for this player!
josh - July 27th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
the other day you had a headline “rafa to bid for 12m winger just what liverpool need” and then a couple of days later you say liverpool fans look away now ?
Magnumopus - July 27th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
He would improve as a Liverpool player!
Eran - July 27th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
I wish. He’s a very good player.
MAC - July 27th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
KEANE WILL BE NOTHING WITHOUT BERBI, HE WILL BE A BIG FLOP.
josh - July 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
if we sign keane he will be amazing with torres. apperently he will have a medical tommorow can any1 confirm this
steve jones - July 27th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
i can recall people saying why the hell we sign mcallister he brought stevie g on leaps who,.s to says keano won,t do the same better than kuyt , vorninin, and what ever else we got
David - July 27th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Idiot! lots of rumours with David Villa, Gareth Barry, Keane etc. but you end up with Downing…another average player never interested by ManU. Enjoy your 4th position again next season.
Pat - July 27th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
hey david shut up!!!
torres32 - July 27th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
david your the idiot mate stop reading other teams news and worry about your own team you glory hunting muppet
Dunc - July 27th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Downing looks like quality to me. I have no idea why you are so negative about him.
rorsine - July 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Keane is a weak player! Liverpool need a high level striker, like Villa or Eto’o. Never, i’d say never you see a player like him linked with Manutd, Arsenal or Chelsea. Not a big club player. Without great players, no title hopes for us.
The Chosen one - July 27th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Downing is crap, id never buy him, just another pennant like milner. If you disagree look at zenden when he played for the same team. He looked class then he came to liverpool and he was average or even below parr. Now question is zenden and downing who was better at middleborough. Zenden by a mile. sir rafa we need a classy winger man, come on m8 use yr head ……
Paul - July 27th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Keane, weak player! Rorsine you are an idiot. Check out the stats before you make yourself look a total school boy.
simon - July 27th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
There are probably lots of wingers around the world far better than Downing and for a lot cheaper.
He is a decent player but I seriously doubt the other top teams would be interested, so why would we?
I think Milner is a better player anway.
matL - July 27th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
i go for david silva only!! no objection!!..
Paul - July 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Rafa has got Shit in his eyes ! who is worse Keane or Downing ?
£20m for a £5m player ! what a waste of time, effort and money. Hopefully we play with 1 up front !
Robbie “10 Goals a year” Keane is like hos goal celebration - Crap.
he can’t do a flip summersault, so he does a cartwheel rolly poly.
Rafa, have you not heard of David Silva and or David Villa ?
Everybody else has !
rorsine - July 27th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
£20m for a small club player. Tottenham have sign good players (luka modric and gio dos santos) and use this money (us £20m) to sign other class player, like David Villa, Samuel Eto’o or Arshvin. Bye bye 4th place for us…
Chris - July 27th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Some of you lot dont half talk rubbish!
As if David Villa is going to be sold for 18-20 mil; (rorsine) anyhow we (Liverpool) have an out and out goal scorer in Torress, what we need is a ’second striker’ i.e. like Keane, plus a Winger obviously. As for he’s not been signed by Arsenal, Chelsea or United…so? United don’t need that sort of player as they have Rooney, Chelsea don’t or at least didn’t play a system that would suit Keane. It’s circumstance with a lot of players - right player at the righ time and the right place. Don’t forget Keane has played for Inter (far bigger club than Chelsea!) and Leeds when Leeds where playing Champs Lge football. Let’s see how he does at liverppol but I suspect he and Torress will work well together.
ibby - July 27th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
YOU TELL’EM CHRIS !!!
THESE LOT ARE A BUNCH OF CRACK HEADS WHO KNOW JACK SHIT ABOUT FOOTBALL !!!
Dan Dawson - July 27th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
to all the rafa dounters on here and the muppet david why do man u chelsea and arsenal have to be linked with them
david - ur a d**k man u dont have to be linked with a player to buy them secondly to all rafa doubters was any big club at all ever intrested in skrtl , ager, mascherano, lucas, nemeth , hypia no i thionk not all wich are and have been class acts for liverpool and finnaly stewart downing cud be just wat liverpool need any body remeber the beckham and van nistleroy partnership wel maybe downing and torres cud be similar downing doesnt have to beat a player before delivering a quality cross and with torres and mayb even keane on the end liverpool will scoe bags of goals
West Derby red - July 27th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
If that little prick rorsine is a red then I’m an Everton fan. Piss off to Yid.com and don’t try to talk about football with the grown ups
rorsine - July 27th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Everton fan? You eat s**t? I’m red 4 life. I only think he’s (keane) not a great club player. We need a great player to wear a 7 shirt. Not a dumb like him, an no skill player and hability less. Liverpool is a great team of england and we need world class players to win a 1st title league since 90. Remember Barnes… remember kenny… All for beat Manshit Untd this year
rorsine - July 27th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
if he cost £10, i like this. But no! £20? Is a good player, but we are Liverpool. We need the best. If Carlos Tevez is a record fee in the premier league (£35), Keane for £20 is a joke.
Chris - July 27th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Maybe it’s United that are the joke if they pay £35m for Tevez..!!
Dale - July 27th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
I totally agree with Chris. Surely if Tevez is worth 35mil, then Keane (who has done alot more in his career) is worth at least the same!! The reality is Utd had a winning formula last season so cannot afford to let him go, no matter what he cost. Liverpool are 2-3 signings away from being serious contenders….Just as long as rafa doesn’t shuffle it as much as lets the team settle from the start. Oh, and for the record, to make this slightly on topic, Downing is not good enough to be a red
liverpool fan - July 28th, 2008 at 12:29 am
keane 20 mil great signing proven goal scorer.the other 3 clubs dont want him who cares.where liverpool we want him dats all dat matters.chealsea brought shev for how much and he cant get into the team great goal scorer from ac but cant play english game.keane proven english goal scorer so he would b great with torres.
daboy - July 28th, 2008 at 2:44 am
Downing would be a reasonable signing but give me Silva any day.
Y.N.W.A. - July 28th, 2008 at 6:15 am
Downing does alright for Boro, I say whittle it down to 8-10 mil and why not? He scores goals, he’s still young, and he could do well under Rafa. Silva is going to be going for 18-20 mil, and he’s not proven in the Prem… I’d rather him than Milner, anyway…
Babels bro - July 28th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Rosarine, Tevez scored 14 league goals, 1 goal in the Fa cup and 4 in europe last season, Keane scored 15 in the league, 2 in the FA cup and 4 in Europe.
£20m is a lot for a 28 year old but partnerships in football are important and I think he’d be a good partner for Torres.
Downing…….. I’d much rather see Silva or someone else but Downings gotta be better than Leto , if the mancs can win the league with Wes brown playing all season then anything is possible
chaz - July 28th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Stuart downing is inconsistent to say the least and on ability he is at the right club in middlesborough.
Don’t punch above your weight or you will be knocked out.
The Chosen one - July 28th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Oh god we do have some lovers of sheep here, cant believe it as well as some self proclaimed dung footy brains ganging up like a pile in the arse.
Fact is if anyone knows im one of sir rafas biggest fans but im telling u now buying downing or milner is a stagnant move to say the least or even a step back for some.
Without being patronising to a couple of wit heads here let me re educate the all knowing football brains that know it all. IF we get keane or barry yes we could challenge but with just them well never win the league and i mean never. What messed us up last season and where we fell below par was our width. our priority is this summer wingers and a striker. Ok full backs can only do so much and rather has said this before. I think we can manage on the right even if we get rid of pennant. Kutye, benyoum and gerrard with one of the younth or reserve team coming through there as well as babel who could also play supporting striker.
The left side of midfield is a must and thats where sir rafa will buy. Rafa needs a fast player ,who is an out lay for the counter attack, scores at least 10 goals a season, great awareness and more importantly has the ability to take on people without fear and give loads and loads of assist.
Basically he need a word class winger or someone who is almost there. just think as hes roaming down the left wing , torress and keane making moves and gerrard surging to support as well as his left back giving him overlapping options on his left, yes exactly itll make us a 3 dimentional team if u can visualise it.
For all those shouting downing and milner (right midfielder) well ill say to you this. We`ve or rafa had been recruiting youngsters for the last 4 years, we have been told they are going to be good. If he got an 18 yr old he should be 22 by now same age as ronaldo and if one of them cant play right midfield which I think is one one the easiest positions in the teamto fill then something is wrong. Ok maybe milner or downing are slightly better than them now but the difference cant be that big surely!! not a difference of 10 mil.
why is rafa buying keane for 20 mil? because he doesnt want to wait and develope anymore he wants title now, leaders and captains on the field. barry and keane. Getting that mentality. and where does milner or downing fit in this? hey guess what for me they dont! I say again Zenden was miles better than downing at middleborough and yet ordinary at liverpool.Lets stop wasting money. Id rather we manage this year than buy crap. Plan for a world class winger or put 10 mil down as deposit and pay the rest next year.
Lets stop buying these one dimentional pennants and upgrade to world class players. That is the place where we lose the big games and the place where we can seriously improve.
Its not hard thinkers, few will diagree ,maybe many but im hoping rafa will come good with help from the yank skums !!!
so shall it be written
and so shall it be done!!
Liverpool4ever - July 28th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Fellow Liverpool supporters, please calm down. Everyone has their own views I supposed. As for Keane, I will love to see him in a Red shirt as I feel he is going to fit in well with our system.
I can understand why some wanted “superstar” signing as they are more exciting to read but please do not forget stars like Shevchenko, Crespo, Veron etc.. for every “superstar” who flops, there are players who fit in well moving from mid-range(no disrespect) clubs (Lampard-Westham, Ferdinand-Leeds).
Bottom line is, are the new arrival able to fit in? We need to trust the manager on this, we can judge them at the end of the season, but before that, the team needs our whole hearted support.
Sheppy84 - July 28th, 2008 at 10:00 am
FYI: Keane signing is imminent, probably before the Villareal friendly on Wednesday.
GARY - July 28th, 2008 at 10:55 am
WHY WOULD YE NOT WANT DOWNING IN YOUR TEAM…..HES QUALITY AND HES ONLY 22 OR 23…PLENTY OF TIME TO IMPROVE UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF STEVIE AND THE GANG…..I FOR 1 WOULD BE HAPPY IF HE SIGNED…..LFC TIL I DIE
The Chosen one - July 28th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Liverpool4ever well said and I can see your point. I trusted him with morientes and believed he would suit us with rafa, hey we both got it wrong. Im not saying im always right m8 and im not screaming out for a world class player. All im saying is there are 4 types of players.
1-the pub players
2-the average leauge player
3-the exceptionary good player
4-the world class player
If we are looking in the 2 bracket the player should be under 20 years old not 24 or so. we have to be looking for 3 or 4 bracket. Look at Ruberry we could of had him for 18 mil last year now hes worth 30 mil.
Hats of to rafa he hasnt really made a loss of most of the players hes sold even though I think its due more to the inflated prices of players rather than improvement of them.
lets remember kewel was on 60k a wk , weve saved more than 3 mil a year there I suppose. Ye we all want whats best for liverpool but getting average mid 20 players just aint it!!
Of course its only my opinion. Another thing is I think its a shame we are are not loaded. Part of me laughs at owen for ditching us for real madrid but another part of me would love to put in a 5 mil bid to bring him back and teach him some manners.
Like one guy said there are many players out there worth 15 mil and are very good. all the manager has to do is find them. Doesnt have to silva bracket there are many.
peace……..
In him I trust……
The Chosen one - July 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am
stuat downing Date of birth, 22 July 1984 (1984-07-22) (age 24)
if he was 19 yep id have him. they say you reach your peak at 27 so hes 3 years away. ok for 5 -6 mil can understand and probably buy him as a squad player. But it means he needs 2 real good years to mature and thats the best hell get. but for 12 milion ,id play myself lol. Hes average. Remember barry born February 23, 1981 in Hastings-27 years olds and keane 28 Date of birth, 8 July 1980 all at their prime.Rafa wants to push .
personaly id spend that 10 mil more on youth team instead looking for the next gerrard. Now if you called Johnson for 12 mil who plays for city id be interested and that would put a smile on my face. what a shame hes right footed 20 yrs old and by far a better player and english!!!
mel - July 28th, 2008 at 11:53 am
KEANE WILL BE USELESS WITHOUT BERBI AND YOU WANT TO WIN THE PL WITH DOWNING, NO WONDER THE POOL FANS ARE WANKERS
rs - July 28th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
ye keane and torres are gd both gd finishers keane got around 20 i think last season ??? not sure but tht plus torres scoring more from another source i will be btr. barry doesnt lk on the cards which is a shame cos i wuld have loved to see him with gerrard torres and keane. sum 1 said remember van nistelrooy and becks but downing is not in the same league as becks was then. we need someone who attacks full baks and he doesnt do tht. we nd to hold on to pennant and babel who do
cmon lfc for next season!!!!!!!! YNWA
Babels bro - July 28th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
can Mel the muppet go and do one, what a retard!!
Do us all a favour and super glue all your fingers together so that you cannot type anymore foolish emails.
We’ll see how crap Keane is on the 1st Nov when we face spurs
Liverpool4ever - July 28th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
The Chosen One.. well said.. guess the Morientes issue makes 3 of us.. (pss.. and I got the same feeling about Owen leaving as well).
Back to topic.. I agree with the 4 tiers of player. And I also remember the excitement when we got Kewell. *sigh*. There is only so much supporters can do.. and I believe Rafa have to trust his scouting network to get those “World Class £15million players”. Maybe it’s just me but I am one of those who loves a versatile player (somewhat like Rafa’s belief),so Keane is good enough for me.
Bear in mind these £15million players might not be famous now, some may come out and complain that we are signing unknown again. And as someone pointed out.. we had been signing “prodigy” since Rafa arrived, and that was 4 years ago.. we seems to be getting the reward with the likes of Insua, Nemeth and Pacheco.
Cheers and peace

The Chosen one - July 28th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Liverpool4ever and here I was thinking I was going insane. we all like to think we know our football and most of us do to a limit. I come from a family of footballers and was a good player in my time, doesnt mean I would be a good Manager. i was born a manc, the only one to support liverpool out of 8 boys and 2 girls. Its hard with most being a Man u fan and only me and my dad being liverpool fans although he liked man u as well. My cousin played for his national team and my God son whos my nephew supports man u but is on man city books. Man u still wanted him but left it late.To make matters worse I work in manchester and only 6people support liverpool out of 90 poeple so i get alot of stick lol.
Anyway coming back to the game of footy of my beloved liverpool. anyone can see that we now have 2 good goalies. an abundance of central defenders as well as cover for full backs. Our central midfield players are as good as anyones in the top 4. and we have good options up front with torress ,keane, kuyte ,babel and even gerrard wen necessary. Our weakness is the width and if you watch our biggest games thats where we loose it,its the reason we cant take the games to teams and look only 2 dimentional. Our wingers take too much time defending and less time doing things with the ball when they have it in dangerous areas.I also noticed that our counter attack has been poor last season. It shouldnt only be from our goalie kicking a long ball to torress. Reina can pass very accurately where are these wingers when he has the ball in hand. We really need to improve on speed and counter better. This is one thing ill take my hat of to hollier he did that well when we won the treble and with mainly midfield players not wingers. It can be done, watch utd and us in 2000-2001 season.
Yes I have faith and yes we can get at least one left winger, god I was kewels biggest fan to and still defend him due to his injuries but it didnt work out and I was wrong.
lets remember Garcia cost around 6 mil then ok so he gabe the ball away a bit , tripped over himelf at times but hey who can deny what he did for us. There difference between him and silver just aint 19 mil. No way. There players out there. how much did moyles buy lescot for? Ashley young I think was 12 mil and villa other midget forward I think came through the ranks. Why hasnt Rafa found them. Im expecting the younths to come through and fill thoose 8 million gaps this season… its about time and lets not 4get How old Ronaldo is and rooney when he was playing for Everton.
Rafa needs to show us the Players and The yanks need to show us the money so the players can show us the trophies. Its simple when you think about it. Like I always say footy is 80% common sense with 20% genuis for a very good player.
Voronin can go, bye bye pennant and the spanish right back due to family reasons. we wish you all well and thank you 15 mil. I may even add leto but dont mind giving him another season thats not really important and tthere is the 15 mil for our left winger who will balance our team.
Just my opinion as usual
The Chosen one - July 28th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
RAYMOND weve already given u and spurs 18 mil we are not that stuipis to give you 30 mil or so for sulky berby baby. ok so ill admit hes class but hey only when the chips are not down.

Stephen - July 28th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Be careful there chosen one,it seems like your having too much fun! lol
Anyways,i totally agree with ya and liverpool4ever. But i’d like to add another point to the one’s ya’s have already made.
And that is that we need to be taking more risks. The forward players need to be trying to thread balls through defences, and trying clever looped passes, flicks whatever, and not just all over the place like ronaldo did in his first few years, but like he plays know where fergie has thought him where and WHEN to be doing these things.
(and to be honest lads, the only player in our current squad who does that consequitively is bennayoun-and yes i hear you guys whining about his size, and i totally agree, but a clever player doesn’t need to be physical,a clever player know’s how to find space and know’s how to use his feet to get himself out of tricky situations)
On a side note i agree with what ya said bout garcia,he just wasn’t a smart player and didn’t know when to do the right thing.
I totally agree about the youth point, and i really feel that concidering that our reserve’s won the reserve league,a few of these young lads will be making there way into the first team squad.
I don’t quite understand why so many people are having a pop at leto.
I was reading on the lfc.tv website an interview with eduardo marcia an he’s was concistantly remarking about leto with fondness and pride, implying his content with his capture of the player and his attributes. I have only seem the guys play a few times,so i have not yet made a complete opinion of him,but surely he can’t be that bad,can he??
Anyone?
Stephen - July 28th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Oh btw, liverpool have just signed keane!-official!
On the lfc website, four year deal!
absolutely fantastic!
The Chosen one - July 28th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Stephen yes i am having fun lol just before I go to work for a night shift. Ok I see your first point which if im honest wanted to add but didnt post. Maybe it looks like we are taking less risks but to me its more like we are not going for the kill. I dont want to sound pessimistic here but ill be honest Sir Rafa is too defensive at times with his teams selection and our boys only start seriously playing when we concede a goal. we also find it hard killing of games as compared to utd after being one nil up. I think its down to a few reasons.
We play at times too controlled robotic football and need to increase the teams fluidity. Yes do see moments of magic and if rafa spends more effort on being less cautious and believing more in the players ability to be able to play themselves out of it. We think too much about our opponents and make too many changes, hence player are not as use to one other as they should be hence less telephatic footy and more robotic footy. Maybe this has something to do with Sir Rafa never being a creative footballer and wanting full control. Good skillful wingers will improve that and make our footy not only more attractive but more effective.
Ok leto I havnt honestly watched much, yes hes young some like him some dont. But all I can say is if he was that good hed have that position there to take so obviously the best we can hope for right now is to be someones understudy. And I wish him the best but seriously if an offer came in for 5 il id take is cos we are a bit skint but thats rafa decision and not mine and wat hes paid for. Hell know more than me.
Yes with garcia it would of been simple for me as a manager. I would of told him not to even think of losing the ball unless hes in the last third . End of but garcia is garcia and we love him for it and to be fair he was a good man behind the ball for us to.
bennayoun yes I like him, the only one so far thats has Garcias inventive. Ok not as creative but hey he keeps the ball. I like him and feel he can only get better.
