The source below has stated that this long protracted deal is about to be completed, and if it is then Rafa Benitez will have one hell of a forward partnership to look forward to!
Liverpool are ready to abandon their hunt for Aston Villa midfield man Gareth Barry.
The Reds refuse to pay the £18million asking price and have now allocated £20m for Spurs striker Robbie Keane — as we exclusively revealed last week.
That leaves boss Rafa Benitez with just £5m left to spend. In a further blow to Barry, Benitez is being urged by his board to rethink plans to sell Xabi Alonso, which would be a major U-turn.
The Spanish midfield ace had been told he was surplus to requirements and could talk to other clubs. But that was when Benitez was confident of signing Barry, 27. Joint owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett had backed Benitez in his bid for the England ace.
Meanwhile, Keane is set for his debut against Villarreal on Wednesday or Rangers next weekend. He will undergo a medical within 24 hours. (News of the World)
The signing of Robbie Keane, if/when it takes place, will greatly relieve some pressure from El Nino who had one hell of an impact in his first season at the club. A Robbie and Fernando strike force should on paper work perfectly as they have attributes that should complement each other well and the signing of the Spurs man strikes me as a far more crucial signing than Gareth Barry would have been. Keeping Alonso will negate the need for the Villa man but Rafa will apparently still need to find some money to fund the purchase of the Irish international but with Voronin and Pennant in the offing along with the cash from the sales of Carson, Crouch and Riise the Spaniard should have enough cash to seal the deal. Do Liverpool fans think that the signing of Keane could lead to an even greater goal return from Torres this season?
