£18m Liverpool TARGET desperately wants move: Has Rafa got money left for deal?
by Mr Comfort on July 28th, 2008This Aston Villa man desperately wants to secure a move to Liverpool, even though it appears that Benitez is about to use up what’s left of his cash on Robbie Keane!
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
Gareth Barry will continue to press for a move to Liverpool that will enable him to play Champions League football next season, despite a hero’s welcome when he came on as substitute against Odense in the Intertoto Cup at Villa Park on Saturday and talk of a new contract to keep him at the club. The Aston Villa captain’s personal view has not changed despite a much more conciliatory position from the club’s fans and the Villa manager, Martin O’Neill.
Both Barry and Liverpool are hopeful that talks between the two clubs will move forward this week and Barry himself is still grimly resolved that he has to be playing for a Champions League team next season. (Independent)
Even though the Aston Villa supporters showed great character to back their skipper on his return this weekend, it appears that Barry really has set his heart on leaving the club. He has been left in limbo, and now it is hard to see how this situation will be resolved. Whilst it’s reported that the Midlands outfit are keen to offer a big cash incentive package to persuade the England man to stay. I think it’s clear that the midfielder isn’t really thinking about the money so he is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Maybe Benitez still has the cash to fund this transfer? Do Liverpool fans hope that Gareth still joins them or is it better to give up on the Aston Villa man?

We would love to have you for…15 mil!!! Wait that’s to much money…we’ll give you 12mil. Take it or leave it!
Wait! We don’t need another midfielder.
Sorry…we’re going elsewhere. Wait! we would love to have yah.
No..no we don’t!
Poor Barry

They cant get him unless they pay the asking price and they aint got no money, it was nice to see Barry play to the best of his capabilties on saturday and im sure now that Liverpool have no money to buy him he will stay.
We will just have to wait until next year and see what the situation is like for Barry and Aston Villa.
Villa are in a win win situation either Liverpool sell Alonso FOR 16 million which is a well over valued price for a injury prone player who has only scored 12 goals ion 4 seasons. If they do which i think theres not a chance of getting that much they will still have to pay villa 18 million.
Then you have the issue of Barry not wanting to play, but by watching on saturday he will play his best for the club as they are paying his wages, and also if he doesnt play well it will threaten is England place.

Perhaps Barry might be ready to forgo his 3 million bonus and ask in writing for a transfer! Sure that would reduce the transfer fee by Villa by 3 million and then the deal will go through!
LFC 18 LEAGUES 5 EUROPEAN CUPS - July 28th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Liverpool are in a win win situation. Either they pay Barry’s realistic price - or they don’t and save £20 million on Gareth ‘nothing special’ “i score more than half my goals every season from penalties” Barry

WHY SHOULD WE PAY 18 MILLION FOF A PLAYER WITH 1YR LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT, simple wait till jan and sign him on a pre-contract for free if he really wants to sign for us that is, or even buy himself out of his contract, under article 17, he should be able to this unless he only signed a 3 yr contract with villa either way, screw em, wait till later and get him
only losers will be villa in the end
Chit team they’re going nowhere but stuck in the middle,

HOLD ON A MINUTE GUYS AM I RIGHT IN SAYING THAT PRICK O’NEIL SAID THAT THEY WANT £8M UP FRONT FROM LIVERPOOL 4 BARRY AND THE REST IN 12 MONTHS WHY ISNT RAFA DOING THAT DEAL THEN? YNWA!
Mark - July 28th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Barry’s better than you all think
dougie - July 28th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
barry is not worth 18mil, alonso is a technically superior player and either one of them would be second fiddle to stevie and mascherano anyway.
what is rafa’s obsession with centre mids all about? we need a winger yet he refuses to buy one. get david silva now and stop messing about buying hundreds of players for one position and none for another!

barry is coming next week, pennant is been sold along with arbeloa
THE CHOSEN ONE - July 28th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Guys Guys barry has 2 years left on his contract , I checked it out myself.I think the 15 mil is there for him already. Time will tell.
Espos - July 28th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Barry has two years left on his contract, but under the new(ish) FIFA regulations a player with 1 or 2 years left on their contract can buy themselves out of it as long as it is done within a set period after the end of the season. It’s too late for Barry to do that this year but next summer he could buy himself out for £2m.
Whiskey Nose al - July 28th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Its funny how everybody believes Liverpool are skint beacuse a few red tops say so. There may be some budget limitations and Rafa has had to sell but dont forget they bid for Barry in May before Xabi was linked to Juve and hava a 15m bid plus add ons on the table so they need to find 1m. the deal will go through if Liverpool want it to go through
Ben - July 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Great about keane, would like barry but we really need a winger first!
bill - July 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Dont you think crouch would have bought his contract out, likewise Lampard, they both had 1 year left on their contracts and it would have been cheaper for inter milan and portsmouth to have paid the remaining contract than pay liverpool 11 million.
Barrys a consistant performer in the premiership and last year helped and scored with the rest of the villa team more goals than any other team in the premiership other than man utd.
I just cant wait until the season starts, hopefully Liverpool will pull galatasary in the champions league and start the season off on a right downer. with a loss to them.

dougie, dougie, dougie, even stevie G want Barry, please take note livepool need to have players with passion and Rafa will bring in wingers first he want competion from defance to mids and so on thats been the Liverpool way, wingers will come have faith in Rafa he love the club
Liverpres - July 29th, 2008 at 4:12 am
I will go out on a limb here and suggest that Rafa knows what’s best for the team better than you all do. Barry would be awesome in a red shirt. Forget Alonso - compare last year’s goals/assists stats in the EPL. Barry can create and score goals. Alonso is a thing of the past. Look forward Reds fans.
Ramon - July 29th, 2008 at 6:24 am
Barry is essential in Rafa’s Plan. First the objective of destabilizing our lower rank opponent has already begun by getting Keane. Spurs are in dire need of strikers if berbatov goes, not to mention a host of others players. Ramos is rebuilding but it takes time. Secondly, by getting Barry, Rafa has thrown Oneill’s plan in the dustbin. Villa center point has been destabilised. Strategically, Rafa has already started the assault on the prem title. On the morale site, Rafa has increase the confidence level of the dressing room by getting WC players such as Barry(stability) and Keane (passionate). By doing this SG can release the shackle of having to carry the team around his shoulders all the time. Not only that, Barry and Keane will do wonders for the younger players. We must absolutely support Rafa by getting Barry. Forget about the cost, think of the result in the long run. If we have to sell then by all means sell the fringe players. In Rafa We Trust.

Comment 1 & 3
Just in case u don’t no liverpool av 5m left after we bought keane arbeloa is worth 6m pennant = 4m vorain= 3m Finain= 3m Alonso= 15m
Total=36m we can buy barry =18m & Rafinha=4m and we’ll av 14m left
dieter - July 29th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
buy silva we need a world class winger who can scare the defenders! keane is a good singing but would have rathered DAVID VILLA. Bu never mind i think we will do well with keane upfront with Torres. and bentley on the right hand side and we are laughing then.

carragher,agger,sketel,dossena
bentley,mash,gerrald, sivla
torres,keane
subs
new goal keeper.

Pacheo/nemeth
Ciaran - July 29th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Ramon is right, Liverpool have started the assult on the EPL without kicking a ball (well in the new season!) Barry will come to us, Rafa is waiting until the end of the transfer window, when Barry still wants to leave and then offer the 15 mil again, MON will agree as no manager will want to have any player on the team who doesn’t want to be at the club. Yes we need wingers but we could decide to play the Spainsh style which is:
—————Reina
Degen—Carra—Agger—Dossena
—–Alonso—Mascha—Barry
————–Stevie G
———-Torres—Keane
Subs: Skrtel, Cavalari, Lucas, Nemeth/Pacheco, Rafinha.
With the left and right backs bombing down the wings, Mascha beig the defensive mid, Alonso and Barry supporting Gerrard and Torres and Keane. That would be class, mind I would much prefer to have Dani Alves as our right back, but we have to make do with Degen. We will prob need another right back if we decide to sell both Finnan and Arb’s and I reckon Rafinha will join…

Barry has better goal average than Alonso..How many goals and assists did alonso had for lfc in the EPL??? Not even half of what Barry have!! And for the kids watching Youtube, Silva is just a waste of money who won’t even adapt to premiership just like Garcia/Arbeloa/Morientes .. he was much less than average in the Euro2008 tournament. its better to play, 4-2-3-1 with gerrard on the right, Barry and mascherano sweeping and cleaning, with keane behind torres.
Andy H - July 29th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Ciaran - Babel, Kuyt where are they?? Skrtel would be better in the middle with Carra RB and with Arbeloa staying things look ok on the right side. Keane in my opinion is a fantastic buy Barry would be another good addition but I think we need wingers to be honest I dont think Masc Xabi and Barry would play in the same team
Ciaran - July 29th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Ok point taken Andy H Babel should be there maybe ahead of Alonso, as his future is unclear, but there is no point in having two strikers playing as wide men… Therefore we would make us of our strengths, the middle of the park, if we had great wingers I would use em but we dont…
Rafa's dad - the onion seller - July 29th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Liverpool FC sunk to the depths in terms of honesty and integrity. Bill Shankley and Bob Paisley will be turning in their graves.
You deserve to be the most vilified football club from here on in.
mainly because of your arrogant and totally undiplomatic manager and the childish person you call a captain.
Ciaran - July 29th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
Rafa’s Dad, why do you say that? We wanted and got Robbie Keane, we must have made a private enquiry and maybe even move for Robbie which Tottneham must have rejected. Therefore Rafa went public about his desire and we got him….
O.K it is unsettling the player but many teams do this and from my memory we have not done this before, mind I do feel you are a little bit right in what you say as Bob Paisley and Bill Shankley would never have had to go public about wanting to sign the player in question.Times have changed unfortunatly it seems in order for us to sign the bigger players we may have to go public.
