The injury to Wilfred Bouma, who was Villa’s starting left-back, placed a huge black cloud over the club’s Intertoto Cup victory this past weekend. Whilst it remains to be seen where exactly Martin O’Neill goes from here, the link with Naylor isn’t a bad one, since he’d definitely prove to be a viable second option while Bouma is on the mend. Sunderland could also make a claim that they need the security at the back; but right now, you’d have to believe that Villa need this deal more than ever.
