Will Andy Johnson’s sale to Fulham be justified if Everton nab Joao Moutinho?
by Dexter on July 29th, 2008The sale of Andy Johnson for a whopping sum - which could inflate as high as £13m - could open the way for a fresh Joao Moutinho bid from Everton; with only one experienced striker in the Toffees squad, is this a gamble worth taking?
Johnson, a tireless runner and a solid part of the Everton squad, was always going to suffer as soon as Yakubu signed, especially as Moyes’ formation of choice is 4-5-1, and Tim Cahill is back on the fitness trail.
The Guardian’s Andy Hunter reports that:
“Everton will return to Sporting Lisbon with a club-record £15m offer for Joao Moutinho, having agreed to sell Andy Johnson to Fulham for a fee that could ultimately rise to £13m.” (Guardian)
If they do eventually bag Moutinho with the help of the AJ dosh, will this prove to be a good sale by Moyes - especially for 13 million quid.

EH YES. An average striker in his late 20s or a exiting 21-year old attacking midfielder, I´d say it would be worth it.

13M for AJ Fulham are just about to be mugged.
That will do nicely

To be honest carrying a player on his wages (and sale value) in the squad was unjustified. I feel Vaughan and/or Anichibe may have grown dissatisfied and requested a transfer if their chances had been limited in the forthcoming season to bench warming.
Johnson was nothing but pace really- couldn’t hit the proverbial barn door and his goalscorer illusion was entirely based on penalty appeals (which top flight refs have now grown wise to).
A shrewd move by Moyes again- I cannot believe we are getting £13 big ones for him either!

Absolutely. Moutinho is one part of three that Everton really need to be a decent contender. In todays game midfield is a top priority and two shrewd acquistions by Moyes will propel Everton were they should be. I don’t think Everton are anywere near skint but are being smart in their approach. AJ was a tireless player for us but not quite the calliber of fininsher like Yakubu. With Cahill full strength in support Everton will crack the top four this year.

Im a red and sorry to jump on your page but i heard a rumour that micheal owen was looking to join everton this week and i heard this from a source close to owen. To sell johnson for that much and get owen on the cheap would be a top bit of business.
Ill go now and read my own pages.

Great sale! AJ hasn´t got wat it takes to be an future Everton player. We need pure quality and Mautinho is young and skilful and maybee the next Deco! Anichebe and Vaughan can fill AJ role I´m absolutely sure!
Just hope we don´t see another Valencia robbing again!

great dealing by moyes bought him for 8 million score 6 prem goals last season and gets maybe 13 million for him . plus everton the new rooney on the way in jose baxter . vaughan fit as well this season . we have the yak and vic as well . moysie will bring 2 or 3 midfilders instead .
Nuno Silva - July 30th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Come on, below 25 million €, Sporting will not deal with Everton. Nevermind! The player is willing to go but Sporting is not willing to negotiate below 25million.
Adam - July 30th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Justified!? Are you fuckin jokein. He is world class, Johnson is not. And he is only gonna cost about £4-5 million more than the £13 million were gettin for Johnson. shrewd if we pull it off.

I would have liked both at everton really.
I disagree with some above,i thought aj was very good.he wasnt the main goalscorer,so adapted a role of running the channels, creating space, and even holding the ball up well, better than the yak does,so with moutinho supplying through balls,aj could have relished a player cutting passes through, especially as aj is lightning,he didnt need to be our gooalscorer,he needed to be the other striker, and i thought he did that very well.Although i think we have a class striker in vaughan so we wont be short,he is going to be class,if he can avoid injuries and suspension.
I am not going to be convinced by this tansfer merrygo round, until aj is holding a fulham shirt, and moutinho holding the glorious royal blue shirt of everton.waiting in hope, and we’ll know on sunday,

Like many other Evertonian’s I’m not going to be convinced by this transfer merry go round, until Moutinho is stood beside Moyes wearing the Royal Blue Jersey and AJ is telling us how he wants to prove himself at Fulham. Good luck to AJ if it all goes through and thanks for your services. However if all goes to plan (as reported) I think it would be very good business for EFC. I too am getting very anxious about the lack of new players coming in. We trust in Moyes but for too long we have been listening to the potentials arriving and usually we are let down. It does get frustrating when you see most clubs bringing in new blood. It is good to see the younger boys coming through and getting good experience with the 1st team squad however if we are serious about our intentions to be challenging for silverware and for a champions league place we all know we need to inject some class with new players and give all our opponents a clear message of our goals. Hopefully we will see some activity over the next few days. COYB
