As Arsene looks to one more big-name signing, could this Euro 2008 winner be just his cup of tea?
Arsenal are set for a surprise move for Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso, says the Daily Express. The Gunners need an experienced central midfielder following the departures of Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto Silva, and Alonso could work well with fellow Spaniard Cesc Fabregas. He would also be cheaper than their other target, Barry , and the money would allow Liverpool to fund their own bid for the Villa captain. Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid are also eyeing Alonso. There appears to be more meat to this speculation in recent days, with Liverpool needing money to help pay for the signing of Robbie Keane, and to help pursue the likes of Silva and Barry. Wenger also apparently has an interest in the Aston Villa skipper, but I think that Xabi complements Arsenal’s style of play far more than the England man.
In many ways, the skills and attributes the Spaniard has to offer are exactly what the Gunners look for in their playing squad. Quite why Rafa wants to sell £18m-rated Alonso is beyond me, but surely the Emirates outfit will be more than happy to help ease Benitez’s financial concerns! Do Arsenal fans think that Alonso could fit in perfectly alongside his international team-mate in the side’s midfield?
