Former Arsenal midfielder says Hleb and Flamini made a huge mistake: Will they be regretting their summer moves?
by offsidetrap on July 30th, 2008With the departure of midfielder Gilberto to Panathinaikos this month, Arsenal supporters have come to the realisation that they stand to lose at least four top-class midfielders. While Gilberto claims he left because he wasn’t guaranteed first-team football next year, the former Arsenal stalwart claims he’s still befuddled as to why Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb left the club. He feels their moves away from the Emirates will be something they will regret later on - especially since they were guaranteed first-team football and a chance to grow under Wenger’s tutelage.
Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb negotiated hefty pay rises after leaving this summer and Emmanuel Adebayor’s future is in doubt because of his demands for an improved contract.
Gilberto, who moved to Greece after losing his place last season, believes Flamini and Hleb will regret leaving the club prematurely. “I don’t know what the reason is for them leaving but they could have stayed. If it’s for money, I would think they’re wrong.
“Most of the players who leave miss the club for lots of reasons. The lifestyle at Arsenal is fantastic. You get so well looked after.” (Telegraph.co.uk)
This has been an odd summer for Arsenal. For a club that was up-and-coming last year with some of the brightest talent, it comes as a bit of a shock to see so many moving this summer. Most would agree that they moved for the money; but in today’s footballing world, it sometimes pays to play at the club that gave you the chance to shine in the first place. One can only wish Flamini and Hleb had proper heads on their shoulders to understand that but, as far as we know, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Do Arsenal supporters agree with Gilberto’s comments? Do you think Flamini and Hleb made the wrong decision to leave the Emirates this summer?

totally agree with gilberto. If there is anyone who knows it would be him. The guy is 30+ now and a winner having been at Arsenal for 6 very successful years. In 3 years compare where Flamini and Hleb are compared with someone loyal like Clichy. Clichy will probably have won more trophies, got into his international side, will be adored by fans from a club and will be considered the best in the world in his position. Basically everything a footballer can dream of. Because of this, this means that ultimately in the long run he will in addition to gaining all the football benefits end up making at least just as much money as those two.

I dont know where u got 4 top class midfielders from. we are losing 2 in hleb and flamini with gilberto past his best. i dont know what u mean by so many leaving as well. flamini is the only big loss. hleb slowed are play and score too few goals to play for us. gilberto and lehman were planned departures anyway, it was obvious they would go. no1 else is leaving now and our squad looks very strong with vela and walcott looking very good indeed.

lets wait till the seasons begin,i dont know why people dont think and learn from other people’s mistakes, flamini and hleb will be begging to come to Hull city in the next 2 years. They should have taken a very good look at the La liga and how many players who have left the english league, and are successful in the la liga, look at henry, owen, becks, anelka amongst a few.Thumbs up Gilberto

well i think that gilberto is right because hes mature and plus hleb and flamini obviously left for money and plus so many big stars go to barca and they don’t seem to shine and a lot of players in barca just seem to shine for a year or two then start to fade and ac milan won’t get anywhere this year
gunnerfan - July 31st, 2008 at 7:43 am
joe tofield bendtner is looking very good too he scored quite a lot of goals and also jack wilshere but i’m nto sure if hes mature enough to play in the english premier league

I totally agree with Gilberto, the likes of Flamini and Kleb are not arsenal loyalyst but mere mercenaries who are looking out for money rather than their career; so too is Ade but let them learn from Reyes and Edu eventhough theirs is a bit different reason for departing. I wish them well.

Both wont be missed!Flamini?1 good season and really even then it was more cesc.Helb?dribble,dribble,dribble….and no goals!and im a Utd fan!!As for Ade?a striker for arsenal should at the very least especially as the main striker get around 30 goals minimum!Yes it can be argued that the same thing happens every season that they lose their players but Wenger is too shrewd altho I suspect that fans of the club are becoming tired with non activity of a superstatus and the fact that they havent won the epl for a while.Nasri…the 1 to watch could be the pires that you have failed to replace.
