by Mr Comfort on July 30th, 2008This Aston Villa man appeared to have been forgiven by the club’s loyal supporters, but now it appears Liverpool are keen to once again try and secure his signature on an Anfield contract.

Liverpool have not given up hope in their quest to add Gareth Barry to the Anfield roster, but manager Rafa Benitez has admitted that he will be forced to sell before making any more acquisitions
Benitez will need to raise a further £18million to prize Gareth Barry from the clutches of Aston Villa.Benitez told the press: “We knew that we could only spend money by selling players and we have been doing this (for Keane).
“We are still trying to sign the players that we need, and if we need to sell someone now, okay, we will do so.
“If we can do it (the Barry deal) before the end of the transfer window, we will continue to try. We will always continue to improve our squad.” (goal.com)
Rafa continues to set his sights on the Aston Villa midfielder; he is probably keen on sealing this deal and then calling it a day as far as summer transfers are concerned. However, Benitez will need to find the cash from somewhere. Originally it appeared Xabi’s departure would fund the deal, but his valuation scared off Juventus. Now a combination of player sales, possibly including Benayoun, Pennant and Voronin is needed to bring in the England man. But why bother? Alonso is a better player in my opinion anyway! What do Liverpool fans think?

As LFC have sold players worth approx £22m this summer, then this money has obviously paid for Keane and Ngog. Should they want Barry, then Rafa has been told he must sell the likes of Alonso, Pennant, Finnan etc to finance the deal. My question is: haven’t the Yanks given Rafa ANY money this summer? It appears that they haven’t otherwise Barry would be at Anfield by now. And where’s the money for a much-needed winger going to come from?
If the same happens next summer (and given Hicks’ and Gillette’s financial position, there is no reason to believe that it won’t), then once all the fringe players have been sold, where will all the money for transfers come from next year because there will be no one left to sell?
If they can’t afford to run the club and pay for a new stadium, then they should sell up to DIC so we can compete with Man Ure and Chelski.
And so say all of us!
