Liverpool FLOP to make £5m exit: Good business for Rafa!
by Mr Comfort on July 31st, 2008Rafa wants cash and he isn’t afraid to sell off squad players in order to finance new investments. With that in mind, it appears one flop is heading for the exit as Portsmouth and Blackburn begin a bidding war.
Don’t forget to check out SoccerPro.com!
Rovers have agreed a £15 million deal with Tottenham over the transfer of England winger Bentley.
Arsenal - Bentley’s first club - will receive 50 per cent of that fee as part of the deal that took the 23-year-old to Ewood Park in 2006.
And though that will put a major dent in the resources made available to Ince, it is thought Blackburn lead the race to sign the £5m-rated Pennant.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is willing to relase Pennant after two disappointing seasons at Anfield following his move from Birmingham. (Telegraph)
The Rovers boss faces late competition for the £6m-rated Liverpool winger from Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, whose chances of landing Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea look slim. (Daily Mail)
As the race continues to accrue funds, Rafa Benitez looks ready and willing to let troubled wide man Pennant leave. If they get as much as 5m for the former Arsenal man, then the Spaniard will be pleased and could well reinvest the cash to bring in new talent. I am sure Liverpool fans are happy to see the club ridding itself of some dead wood, as well as some useful squad players, but who else should he opt to offload? Benayoun? Voronin? Finnan?

jason from australia - July 31st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
mate thats a bit harsh, he was never a flop, be is bottom 10 premier league material not top ten, thats why blackburn would be a great move! fuk barry we do not need him if alonso stays, just get silva and we are a premier league winning team, torres, keane, gerrard, silva, babel, mascherano, alonso, agger, carragher, srktel, dossena, reina
John K - July 31st, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Pennent and Voronin not good enough and holding up some youngsters (Nemeth, etc). Should sell them both and buy one wing man (Silva) after completing the Barry deal after he puts in his transfer request on Friday

LFC - July 31st, 2008 at 6:12 pm
he was never a flop. his first season was very good, getting loads of assists and got MOTM in CL final. last season was halted by a long term injry and he missed 4 months. and when he got back to form towards the end of the season everyone could see his quality. would gladly keep him for another season and see how he progresses.
roders - July 31st, 2008 at 6:15 pm
keep benayoun, he’s a good player but get rid of veronin and pennant and bring in barry and silva-then were in business
bill - July 31st, 2008 at 6:16 pm
barry deals all over for Liverpool anyway, Barry his agent and Oneil agreed that if the deal was not done with Liverpool by 5pm yesterday they would draw a line under it and agreed he would not be going to liverpool this season.
Shame for Liverpool great for Oneil and Villa unless he goes to Arsenal, but it looks like there is no way he his going to be playing for Liverpool this season.
Mind you have your main man in Keane and he looked wicked yesterday, well worth 20 million.
Benny - July 31st, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Liverpool will NEVER (well not in our lifetime) win the Premiership EVEN with RK and SG. An increasingly bumbling manager and too many average players….BAD time ahead at Anfield….even if it is sold soon!
MAC - July 31st, 2008 at 6:31 pm
liverpool will not win anything again like last season they past their best,
and keane is nothing without berbi,
Rich - July 31st, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Lol sounds like Benny and Mac are more bitter tottenham/villa fan again. Or perhaps even worried Mancs?
Maybe focus on your team rather than try to drag the Kopites down to your level son?

dibbler - July 31st, 2008 at 6:51 pm
He was not a flop and had some good games. I do think however his final ball was not up to scratch and did not score enough goals but his first touch is top draw i wish him good luck at wherever he goes and will always be remembered as a legend by me for the time when wenger asked him when he first signed for arsenal what are his future aspairations and he said to be good enough to one day play for liverpool.
Pennant ynwa.
Rich - July 31st, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Nah you’re wrong, Bentley’s an alright player. Like I said no point stooping to the level of some bitter fans.
Liverpool for the title this year!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS BYE BYE PENNANT ONCE A BIRMINGHAM PLAYER ALWAYS A BIRMINGHAM PLAYER ENUF SAID…..SILVA INSTEAD OF BARRY RAFA,BARRY IS TOO SLOW WE NEED PACE ON DA WINGS,ALONSO GERRARD MASCHERANO LUCAS N PLESSIS WE DNT NEED ANOTHER CENTRAL MID……………………………
Blockman - July 31st, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Richard why do you say we aint getting Silva????….his club have openly said that they need to offload players, If we sell a couple of players (Voronin, Kuyt, Arbeloa if he wants to go back to Spain as reported and one from Pennant and Benayoun) then we can stump up the cash to bring him to the club and I think he would be a great signing.
On the subject Pennant is not a bad player but not good enough to play in our first team…best of luck Jermain wherever you go (well except when playing against us of course!!)
Nick - July 31st, 2008 at 8:27 pm
We need to sign Silva and Rafinhia. Two very fast attacking wign players. Get rid of Voronin Arbeloa (he wants to go back to Spain anyways) and Pennant. Theyre not good enough. We seriously need wing players not another Central Midfielder.
clay - July 31st, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Jp was not a flop he was having a good season, then got injured. he was the teams best player in the champs league finals. who needs to be sold is Voronin he doesn’t deserve to be wearing a liverpool shirt. My 80 yr old Granddad would have been a better prospect than him, also we don’t need Barry, we already have Alonso who is a better player than Barry. we need a great winger more than anything else right now!
Dan - July 31st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Apparently 14 mil + arbeloa = silva, (arbeloa has said he wants to return to spain for personal reasons) well atleast that is what i’ve heard dont slag me off, im just passing on info i’ve heard.

We should keep Pennant until we sign a replacement fast goal scoring winger. Lets rattle O’Neils cage by going after Ashley Young

They could go back to Villa and offer 1 million pounds,Pennant and a can of bake beans for Barry and Young.
Im sure Oneil would snap there hands offfffffffff!!!!!!!!!!
Jamoomoo - July 31st, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Pennant should nearly be first team right wing every game- he is a great footballer (and way better than all you morons on here saying he is not worthy). I don’t think he has been given a fair crack of the whip. But, OK, he is probably gone now… one winger and we are set… fk Barry!?! where is he supposed to play?? and Bentley is half the talent Yossi and Pennant are.
junaid - August 1st, 2008 at 12:27 am
Sorry but it dont matter who Liverpool buy, they always seem to have a manager who cant buy a player thats going to make any difference to the squad. Far to much money is wasted on bottom table type players.
Buy for peanuts get monkies. (Most cases)
And lets not even get into the board, poorly run and dont have a clue about football.
Can anyone tell me why you would buy 3 or 4 players in the 5 million bracket who are good for the lesser teams? Liverpools transfer dealings are like that of the bottom teams. And forget torres being a big purchase, everything Liverpool do is purchased through loans which makes their business model very shakey. Interesting to see how they will fund 27 million in interest next year. HAHA good bye Liverpool
Jason - August 1st, 2008 at 12:29 am
Silver will not happen.
Its obvious Rafa sees Barry and Masch sat behind Babel, Gerrard and Keane with Torres on his own.
We may see the 442 formation with kuyt and benni as well involved.
Although we will not have the width we will have the pace and the passing range.
This team are the best I have seen in years, I think next season will be interesting with the Title no forgone conclusion.
Also, is it me or until the Barry saga I never saw or heard from a Villa fan, no all of a sudden they are all over every LFC story posting their bitterness.
They must be trying to compete with Everton another club living in our shadow.
daboy - August 1st, 2008 at 4:17 am
When ya say deadwood mate just remember Finnan has been a great servant if they had picked up more like him they would have done a lot better Voronin Pennant arent in the same league.
jebote - August 1st, 2008 at 5:36 am
calling him a flop is harsh. he was no where near a flop .. his first season was exellent and he like alonso has ran into a few injury problems over the last season or 2. however i don’t think he is top 4 first team standard. but put him any other clubs colours and i think he will work wonders for them. if he does go i wish him well and thank him for his services.
jason btw. you can’t even spell SILVA … so dont comment on what you obviously have no clue about.
CY - August 1st, 2008 at 5:48 am
LFC needs a quality winger to win. Pennant is good, but didnt get enough chances to play after his injury. He needs more first team action. Rafa does not play Benayoun enough as well. We need a new quality proven winger that can play week in week out. Silva is the man for the job if we can pay.
Winning the title can happen, only if we get a world class winger in. Babel is not a winger, Keane is not a winger. Its a shame Rafa has this habit of screwing players by playing them in wrong positions. Dirk Kuyt needs to be offloaded i say put him on transfer list for 5 million.
If robbie keane is deployed as a right wing i tihnk its a shame u pay 18 million for a proven striker but play him on the right. its retarded… I will lose faith in Rafa if he eventually chooses to play Keane on the right.. Keane’s a striker, let him do his job behind torrres, buy a qulaity right winger, and let benayoun and babel compete for the left wing spot. Then we can compete for the title.
Aman Ramdeyal - August 1st, 2008 at 6:07 am
Good day all. I was just thinking about something, not sure what you guy’s think, but I think we will not be signing David Silva but I think Rafa will buy Joaquin instead, could be on loan or much cheaper then what it will cost us for David Silva. What do you guy’s think?
Aman Ramdeyal - August 1st, 2008 at 6:18 am
I don’t think Pennant was a flop. He was never really given a run in the team. When he leaves I wish him all the best.

Gibbons the hoop - August 1st, 2008 at 7:58 am
Anon. Why keep Voronin? he wasn’t good last season. and I agree with Mr Ramdeyal.
Wally - August 1st, 2008 at 8:08 am
Pennant is a good player, the CL final proved that, but lets be honest, Benitez hasn’t done him any favours. His no subs before 70+ mins policy means we never get a chance to blood the potential in the squad. Thats why we have to go for an established winger, someone who doesn’t need development or encourangement. I don’t know why everyone raves about Silva so much? I think he’s decent but theres much better out there. And all the people slating Bentley are a bit of a wind up, he was one of the best midfielders in the league last season, fact, and he would be have been a quality buy for Liverpool. Well done to spurs for a very good bit of business. I’d love to sign Ashley Young but Martin O’Neill will probably have a coronary if he gets wind that we want him. I’m trying to work out who is the bigger joke in english football, Martin O’Neill or Steve McClaren
Dom - August 1st, 2008 at 8:16 am
Pennant is far from poor. Just not top 4 material. Never quite cut it at lpool. Personally i dont see the hype about benayoun either, i say sell them both, make 12 mil from it, sell voronin make a further 3 mil. Make a bid for silva or quersma (more so silva). BUy him, sell alonso, and get barry.
Alho i like alonso over barry, obviously rafa doesnt, so he knows best
skinterthanyouthink - August 1st, 2008 at 8:44 am

anon, i hope you were just joking. Should sell Voronin since LFC already have Keane, and other more talented youngsters in the reserves.
tony monero - August 1st, 2008 at 10:27 am
sell benayoun.bring silva.end of story
Alonso Fan - August 1st, 2008 at 11:04 am
Pennant should never have been a LPC player, not sure what CL final people were looking at when they say he was MON. Did he score a wonder goal, beat a couple of playes and setup some golas, no he did not. They guy is overrated , rarely looks up (did you see him this week, 3 players in the box and he crosses and picks out two opposition players outside the box), he is a coward and hides in the game, i.e. lets his man drift away from him so he doesn not have to run back, hate that type of player and can spot one a mile away. I rate El Hage way better and that is saying something.
He was at the right level at his last club, bottom tier in the PL.
I agree that we should keep benayoun, he’s a good player squad player and can come on and open up tight defences.
Ssilva is overrated and over priced and will frustrate in the PL, I call him ‘eye candy’ , some nice moments but often gives the ball away , a porrer version of L.Garcia.
Veronin has to go, and we should also consider selling Kyte - he just lacks the pace and his first touch is often just not good enough though he did very well in the CL last year and he gives his all. Still I hope R.Keane does not become his wing role replacement.
I do not know where this fad of playing strikers has come from but many clubs seems to be adopting it. Was Heskey the first under our previopus manager, now Rooney looks like that his his role and ManU.
Personally , I woulod also let Aberolio go if there is 6 or 7 mil on the table. Finnan is better. I would also get rid of the other free right back and am already concerned about the left back. The youth players look better and Warnock also looks better at left back, should have kept him.
Still, there is optism if the right deals are done and for once in many years I could see us pip the PL if Rafa prioritise over the CL and plays a settled team.
Barry is a good acquisition because of his flexibility, is adopted to the PL like Keane, but only if we keep Alonso. Though he is also over priced…
Think , of the options and a front 6 of
Torres
Keane
Barry Alonso Masc.. Gerrard
There is steel, speed and craft in this and both Barry and gerrard are effective in the wide areas.
We could also play
Torres
Babble Keane Gerrard
Barry Masc..
For winger options , I would go with two value options over Sivia.
Joaquin on the right (5 Mil) and Duff on the left (3MIL), along with the other players we have above including Barry we would have so many options of quality players.
Normally I say spend the money on quality instead of poorer options, but I do believe Duff and Joaquin are quality and think Silvia will struggle in the physical aspect of the PL.
JC may be used more at right back, MS and DA in the center and who knows at left back.
There is a lot of steel in this team and the spine is looking very good.
Karim - August 1st, 2008 at 11:32 am
I thought Pennant did quite well for us, he isnt consistent but he worth being a squad player. Saying that, if we can get £6million for him then thats a done deal. Also heard that we might be selling Arbeloa back to spain. Also, the value is quoted at £6million, again thats brilliant considering we bought him for a fraction of the price. Although id rather him stay, he has proven a good acquisition, if we can get £12million, then that can be used to buy Barry and one more player.
I dont want to see Alonso leave so until we find this new right winger why not play gerrard on the right of the attacking 3 with Babel and Keane and Torres up front. We could even play Barry if we sign him on the left hand side of the attacking trio and keep alonso and mascherano. This will also help Dossena attack as Barry can fill in for him when he goes roaming.
RayParlourForPresident - August 1st, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I think you lot have been fleeced paying that price for Robbie Keane when you sold Crouch who is arguably a much better player.
Keane had his best season last season and still didn’t look as good as most of the strikers in the premiership, bearing in mind Santa Cruz. Adebayor, Drogba, Anelka, Berbatov, Tevez,
he is not worth 20M as most of the above would be cheaper and also younger….
Keane wasn’t even the best striker at Tottenham and you still paid more for him that you would for Arshavin or Santa Cruz….
you paid more for a mediocre striker from a mediocre club than Barca paid for Thierry Henry….
Good Business??
can’t see the logic in the purchase myself, I like Liverpool but think you may have dropped a bollock
Coggin - August 1st, 2008 at 12:59 pm
If Rafa needs to raise any more cash to buy more players then here is a list of then one that can and may go… STEVE FINNAN, ANDRIY VORONIN, JERMAINE PENNANT, ALVARO ARBELOA, LUCAS LEIVA and CHARLES ITANDJE, add that to any money left in the kitty from sales and last years CL and Rafa can shop for some of these…Barry, Silva, Villa, Rafinha Stewart Downing or James Milner..Now I am not sayingthese are in order of who I would like, I just want to see a league win, it’s been too long I am starting to forget what the feeling was like, the CL win did of course help. DAVID ELNINO 7 - August 1st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
its crystal clear, we bought him for 6.5mill, so we should sell him for AT LEAST THAT to get our money back, he’s still in his prime (well prime - average) he just isnt good enough for liverpool, a top 4 team in england and europe. sell him on for 7 mill, and use the cash towards another winger, we need one. on a slitely different note, i’d play gareth barry at left midfield, he’s got a cracking left foot and and would get attacking support from dossena behind him. so just need a right winger
Macca - August 1st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Pennant aint the worst I wish him the best if he is leaving. Would like a winger though, say maxi Rodregez from Athletico… That would be nice! For me (Maxi) is better than Silva although older, I feel his overall abilities are great. If its youth you are looking for how bout looking at Lennon from Spurs or Hamsik from Napoli. Both good youngsters with the potetenial to be better than most of the wingers we have
Booky30 - August 1st, 2008 at 6:25 pm
I cant understand the people on here saying Pennant was NOT a flop, based on a good perforance in the CL final and maybe a couple of other games, he is shite for us 95% of the time, SELL HIM £5 for him is good, and the way i see it is you can judge a players stanard buy who wants to buy him and he is going somewhere very average.
Bentley for £17m takes the piss, if he was worth that he would be going to a BIG club.
Voronin might be ok as a sub next season, dont care if we sell him or not, Benayoun is awesome and we need to keep him, Arberloa was good but if he wants to go there is no point keeping him, might aswell keep Finnan to.
Keane, Dosenna and Ngog i am excited about, Plesis and Pocheco have look very good along with Insua and a few other youngsters pushing thru, i think this should be a good season us with younger deapth players looking better than that of recent years.
one more player to sign, Silva would be good, not Barry unless we lose Alonso which i really cant see, i would like to see a bid for liverpool fan Theo Wilcott, bid £18m for him over Barry.. cheers
Booky30 - August 1st, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Sorry one more player i would love to see us get is JUNIOR STANISLAS he is only about 17 but he is the latest superstar on the long list of who WESTHAM have produce, following in the footsteps of Cole, Carrick and ferdihand to name a few, this guy is rated higher and better than all of them, he is a lightening fast winger (faster than Theo Wilcott) he is been held back by a very average manager in Curbishley but it will be hard to stop him pushing thru this year, if you aint heard of him then lookout for him 100% garanteed to be a star..!!

If we can bring in Barry (and I think we will), then I believe we’ll be very close to the Premiership this season because of the depth of quality we now have. Both the formations below could switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-3 or 4-4-2, even during games, because of the flexibility and intelligence of the majority of the players Rafa now has available.
‘08/’09 Champs?:
—————Reina—————
Degen-Carra-Agger-Dossena
——-Masch——-Barry——–
–Keane—-Stevie G—Babel–
—————Torres————–
(Although I am still yet to be convinced by Degen in defence). Hypothetically, taking that fantastic 1st choice side out of the equation, you would still be left with a squad of:
————–Cavalieri————–
Arbeloa-Skrtel-Hyypia-Aurelio
——-Plessis——-Alonso——–
–Kuyt—–Pacheco—Benny O–
————–Nemeth—————
…and a full subs bench of Martin, Darby, Insua, Spearing, Leiva, El Zhar and Ngog.
Every single one of those mentioned above have proven that they wouldn’t look out of place in the top side. Remember, even on top of all this, we still have waiting in the wings some of the reserves who won two titles last term, the majority of the youth cup winning squad and a number of quality youngsters out on loan around the country.
Carson, Riise, Guthrie, Kewell and Crouch have all gone. You’ll also see that I’ve even had ‘the luxury’ (not really the right phrase) of being able to leave out Itanje, Finnan, Pennant & Voronin as I think they’re no longer required and that they’ll leave this summer or in January. If the rumour that the fee for Barry will be funded by financial re-jigging from the other side of ‘the pond’, then that additional £12-14M, will, I believe (and hope!) go towards adding Silva in a late surprise move this summer. In my selection above, Babel would then drop down in the pecking order with Benny-O moving across, replacing Pacheco in the ‘hole’.
Even without Silva coming in, that second team has a lovely blend about it and would at least be a bloody decent mid-table Premiership side in their own right. I’d love to be able to watch the training matches at Melwood this season!!!
The future is bright – the future is RED – YNWA - In Rafa we trust!

Good to see rafa offloading our shit players,Riise,Carson,Kewell,Le tallec,Crouch.Finnan,Pennant,Voronin,Itandje and hopefully Leto will all be gone in the coming weeks.22 is the magic number when it comes to squad sizes these days.Reina, cavalieri, arbeloa, degen, skrtel, carragher, hyppia, agger, aurelio, dossena, mascherano,barry/alonso, gerrard, lucas, benayoun, kuyt, silva, babel, torres, nemeth, keane, ngog with insua, darby, spearing, pacheco and plessis(in particular) getting a run when needed=olympics, league cup,fa cup,injuries/suspension. Rafa is really starting to get the squad that he wants. As long as the absence of Babel, lucas and mascherano to the olympics dont hurt us,then we should be there abouts towards the end of all competitions
Allahs boot - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:03 am
If alonso stays when barry signs does it mean that silva or any other winger for that matter will not be coming? If that is the case then barry will be our left winger and babel/kuyt/benayoun will be our right wingers. Barry will be an excellent signing,he can play left back, left wing, and in both central midfiel positions. And the reason that both barry and keane have cost so much and the fact that there havent really been many big signings in the premiership goes to show the ridiculous amounts of money being asked for players.Drogba,Eto,Adebayor,Villa,Huntelaar etc were all rumoured for moves but their clubs are asking for exorbitant fees.I believe we were priced out of the race for Villa and huntelaar before we opted for keane.Time will tell but i think liverpool will have a cracking season.
brian - August 3rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
heres one for ya, never mind getting gareth barry, what about Robbie savage, BARGAIN! a bit of muscle in the team. and what about boumsong as future replacement for the ageing Carragher, i like the cut of his jib! who else agrees! while im at it, robbie keane ,what a waste of 22million dollars, could of got heskey to change his hard stance on coming back to liverpool for a fraction of the price plus throw Graham Souness into the liverpool mix , he’s got a fanastic attitude. but we do need to be realistic, we wont be able to get all these , but capturing one, will put us on the right track!

I haven’t decided yet if I’m selling him or not. He’s a nice lad, works hard in training but he hasn’t got the fire in the belly. Although we need money for the acquisition of Barry, I don’t want to leave the sqaud short of wide players.
Andriy is toast.
