Tottenham’s £15 million new signing aiming for a top-four finish - are Arsenal fans shaking in their boots?
by stresster on July 31st, 2008Talk is cheap, although there’s a lot of it at White Hart Lane, which has been a hive of activity this week. No sooner had Robbie Keane flounced off to Liverpool for £20 million, Spurs were reinvesting the lion’s share of their cash on Blackburn winger David Bentley for £15 million. Here’s another player who isn’t short of confidence, immediately making a statement of intent which might be of interest to fans of former club Arsenal.
Sky Sports reports that the England international sees no reason why Tottenham can’t break into the top four, although this is starting to sound like an echo of last season, when there were plenty predicting the same thing. What actually happened was that the club failed to make it into the top half, but with Spurs treating this transfer window like a game of FM08, who knows?
Juande Ramos has made a number of other exciting signings this summer and Bentley feels Tottenham could break into the top four.
He told Sky Sports News: “Of course. They are young talented players. It will be difficult but if we give it our all and we are all up for it, I think it is quite possible.
“We can do anything we want and anything we put our minds to. We’ve got a great manager and you can see what he did last season.
“The fitness and the level of play at Tottenham has risen and I want to be a part of that.
“Hopefully we’ll keep progressing this season and do well.”
Not quite on a par with Heurelho Gomes’ proclamation that he’s set his sights on the top two places in the Premier League, but another confident assertion ahead of the new season starting. With Arsenal currently fourth favourites to win the Premier League, will the Gunners be the ones nervously looking over their shoulders next term?

thats it caughtoffside set up another story where rival fans get a good chance to hurl abuse at us. 5th place is definitely possible but realisticly 4 is not going to happen, not because the players arent good enough but due to the amount of time this new team will take to gel.
JacktheGooner - July 31st, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Shite-ing ourselves I am sure - spurs will finish 7 or 8th top whack.
Gareth - July 31st, 2008 at 12:45 pm
I agree - I think Spurs need to worry about teams in and around there ball-park such as Everton, Man City and Blackburn first. I think Fulham will be the surprise package this year though. Spurs could finish anywhere from 4th - 9th.
valle - July 31st, 2008 at 12:50 pm
i think liverpool will be worried but dont think the gooners should worry just yet. if we still lose berba i will be shitting myself dont care about the goons.

i agree with gareth as for spurs season placing
as far as fulham being a suprise that would shock me to bits
i dont think they have the squad depth
very suprised everton sold johnson to fulham that was a good singing for them
the trouble is as soon as they get hit with injurys they had it.
i would love to see a change in the top 4
one thing is for sure spurs have the most exciting new signings and the best new manager in the league and im no fan but cant wait to see what they can do this season
Billiospur - July 31st, 2008 at 12:57 pm
stresster …….what are you doing writing such crap on the net
look…spurs and Ramos are in the business of wanting to move the club into a higher status over the next few seasons etc so the players are in the mood for their goal of acheiving champions league level with style……in a difficult league probably the best in the world …….all to play for
and last year we gave all the main top teams a run for their money
so positive days …….
The truth - July 31st, 2008 at 12:58 pm
We sign Gomes, Modric, Bentley, Dos Santos, Bostock. We sell/loan Malbranque, Kaboul (probably), Tainio, Chimbonda, Gardener, Keane
You sign Bischoff (who!!), Nasri, Ramsey, You sell Lehman, Hleb, Flamini, Gilberto.
Its fairly obvious to me which team has got stronger and which team has got weaker but for you moronic goons i can draw a picture if you like??
Oh and it looks like Arshavin is on his way, he’s not bad either.
Spud - July 31st, 2008 at 12:58 pm
We do not have to worry about other teams. The main thing is to play our game and try to win every game whether its against liverpool or hull city (no disrespect). It is a good thing that people see us as underdogs but i am very certain other managers would not see it this way.
Premier league is harder than la liga even for ramos but thats why he has brought in many of the brightest talents in the world as in modric, dos santos, bentley, maybe arshavin. They all will be great players in the future but still need to adapt to the premier league. IF they play together as ramos would like them to then im sure there is no problem as it will be hard for the opposition to get a touch of the ball.
It also all depends on luck as injury to us and to the top4 will play a major part in deciding the positions but im certain we will have a good season and my guess is we will finished 2nd or 3rd
JacktheGooner - July 31st, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Rebuild of spurs - how many managers and players have they gone through doing that in the last ten years - failing every time only to life JUST the MIckey Mouse cup and to be honest is no mean feat as Chelsea and spurs are the only premiership teams to field their strongest teams in the comp is it any surprise they met in the final!?
bardhotspur - July 31st, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I think Man Utd and Chelsea will fight for the Premiership. I’m not sure Liverpool or Arsenal are any stonger than last season playerwise wheras Spurs, despite losing Keane (and Berbatov???), have bought well and do look stronger, on paper, than last season. However you don’t win on paper and I think it will take time to gel. I’m really looking forward to the season but in all honesty wouldn’t like to predict 3rd -8th. Anything could happen.
dan - July 31st, 2008 at 1:01 pm
ramos certainly is bringing in some top players, but isnt this deja vu for the last 3 or 4 seasons and i am still not close to shitting myself.
they are certainly spunking the cash more , 17 for modric, 15 for cuntley, and reported 16 million plus for arshavin if it happens, not sure theyre all worth that but theyre good players and improvements on what spurs have and they will still need to replac keane and berbatov if they both go, with money from keane and berbatov they will probably be looking at a spend of about 70 mil plus but a net spend of 30 or 40 , then again as we have proved over the last 1 or 12 years you dont have to spend huge to be successful but it can help!
i think spurs fans can be confident though that with the proper quality (modric for a start as long as he adapts to the prem, no hes not better than fabregas who is still 2 years younger though!) being brought in instead of commolis rubbish spurs wont be struggling in the botom half again this season even taking into account gelling etc anywhere from 8th to 5th would be good for them and if they can achieve 4th or 3rd then they will have done fantastically well.

Ubermensch - July 31st, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I think that yea Spurs has improved from last year and Arsenal havent as much/slightly weakened infact but the gap in depth and quality and understanding will be too much for Spurs to overcome…yea Spurs might be better but seriously can we begin to compare them with the top 4 who have solid spines in their team which have been playing together for a good few seasons…i definately think though that Spurs will be 5th..i really thought this would be the season Man City would go for 5th with Mark Hughes coming in but considering their transfer dealings this summer compared to Spurs i dont see that happening, which is kinda odd because well why did Thaksin sack Sven if he wasnt goin to back his new man with a wallop of money…i dont see Man City improving on their position last year…everton 6th id say and Aston Villa a bit below…Spurs are definately going to be the best of the rest simply because they have strengthened while others havent and remember their position last year was mostly because of Jol’s disastrous start…with Ramos its a 5th this year atleast…maybe if Arsenal have a bad 4th this year and dont win anything and then see a bunch of players again walking away next summer then Spurs might get the 4th but not now
GoonerUbeatusfairandsquare - July 31st, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Spurs should be challenging for the top four and given that they almost did it a couple of years ago shows that there is no reason why they can’t do it again. Seeing as Spurs have spent at least the same of not more than Arsenal over the last ten years shows there is nothing between them in terms of finance. Spurs have underachieved for years and now is the time to step up. Ramos seems like a good manager. See you at the Emirates…

Oh you dumb kikes - dos santos? that guy sucks even worse than the faggot bentley.
As for modric, he’d have to settle behind wilshire as third choice midfield playmaker at arsenal.
Your team sucks and will always suck. Just like your stadium and the grotty surroundings…
Arshavin? A couple of decent games and you’re the only cocksmokers willing to buy him. Wankers…
And just remember, your third choice after barca and arse…
So enjoy sixth place, we’ll take the champions league berth and when Man U’s debt cripples them and roman walks out on chelsea, we’ll dominate for the remainder of the 21st century.
We hate Tottenham.

How much cash have you boys splashed in the last decade for 2 mickey mouse cups?
Mondric won’t hack it in the premiership…….that’s why he’s signed for a second rate outfit. Gio isn’t all that….hussle and bustle…..and…..nowt. Keane is a massive loss for you.

Good luck spurs, but it aint gonna happen. All the top sides have strengthened in the summer, all this shite about Arsenal collapsing because of Hleb and Flamini, 1st of all Hleb was a brilliant dribbler and a visionary passer, but was a shocking finisher, Nasri will be a far better goal-scoring midfielder. Flamini was a solid work-horse nothing more, Diaby and Denilson both have the likely potential to become far better players than Flamini. Ramsey, Vela, Nasri, Bischoff, Coquelin not to mention a couple of English youngsters- Wilshere, Lansbury-are set to make an impression. Liverpool have strengthened, Chelsea have brought in Deco and Boswingwa, United will slip down to 3rd, Scholes is past it, and Carrick, Hargreaves, O’Shea are all VERY second rate. OK ANDERSON IS A GUN. Focus on UEFA cup spurs try to keep the team together and maybe if Liverpool sack Rafa there will be a window of opportunity.

I can remember the very last game of the season spurs played they lost 2-0 to Liverpool and they had keane then. What on earth now makes you think you can break into the top 4? The only team I would expect having a chance of breaking into the top 4 is Everton as they finished 5th last season. Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are on the way up and as for Man United they’re on the way down as I don’t recall them making any major signings. There is also the fact that Ronaldo is out until October and there is now way tevez or rooney will be able to get the goals for them=loosing matches= not getting any points!!!

Selling Keane and Berbatov will back fire at them. They are players they should build the future of Spurs on.
Last season, Spurs main problem was at the back. This is where they should improve on. I like the quality of their recent signing though!
But Stid Macbrandt and Pascal Chibonda could be players they may miss.
Against, my belove Arsenal, yes Spurs mad better signing than us. But don’t forget, we have quality already in our academy who are waiting to surprise a lot of people this season. It’s a risky thing AW is facing; he is quite comfortable with it and the result last night is really supporting his case.
It’s a nice thing Spurs are improving, but I don’t think they’ve got our number yet.

did i read man u made no new summer signings this summer so theyre goin to slip? isnt having the best youngs players who are getting better, better than havin a bunch of people who neva met each otha? and wejust won the double so its not like we got a crap team.
i neva herd of the new goners playrs? who are they? except nasri, i herd of him. ramsey??? who??? wilshere or summat lyk tht aint it? see dnt no hw 2 spell his name cos neva herd of him. spurs will get 4th if all their players are like bentley and gomes, confident players with high ambitions. as for arsenal bein a better team because they have a higher goal thn spurs, doesnt tht show tht arse fans are goin to be more disappointed when they lose their top 4th place? and kids my arse, well they are, but not that young really, young these days is about 16-19yrs old not howeva old arseholes players are
