Spurs to sign £19m EUROSTAR within DAYS: FIFTH big signing this summer!
by Mr Comfort on August 3rd, 2008 63 commentsJuande Ramos has already made some huge signings in recent months but he isn’t finished yet!
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
They fear there will be be riots on the streets of St Petersburg when Andrei Arshavin joins Tottenham this week.
Senior officials at Zenit St Petersburg accept a £19million deal will finally go through and the most gifted player in the Russian League will have the chance to prove he’s not a flawed genius who can be breathtaking one week, anonymous the next.
Zenit skipper Anatoli Tymoschuk is adamant.
He said: “Arshavin will be a sensation in England.
“He is the kind of player they have not seen in English football yet. The fans have seen great dribblers and fabulous strikers from Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil.
“But they have never seen a player from Russia with such exceptional talent.”
Tymoschuk lifted the UEFA Cup in May at the City of Manchester stadium with Arshavin on his side when Zenit beat Rangers. It was a long road to Manchester while in domestic football Zenit were winning the Russian title.
Tymoschuk went on: “Without Arshavin we would not have got there. He was an absolute star in every European round.
“He also was the most influential player in the league and helped us win the title. For every team he’s the extra quality you need to win trophies. (Sunday Mirror)
With Bentley, Modric, Gomes and Giovani in the bag and with this Russian on his way to the club maybe the north London club will not miss Robbie Keane or indeed Dimitar Berbatov (if he does indeed leave for Old Trafford). Tottenham may well be challenging for a top six finish next term in fact they could well even attempt an assault on a much coveted top four place given their wealth of talent in their new signings. Arshavin would be the icing on the cake and would surely make them this summer transfer windows best buyers. What do Spurs fans think the club can achieve in 08/09?

With Arshavin on board i really think we could challenge for the top four this or next season. Yes i have thought so before but clearly our squad is getting better on the whole and if we can keep Berbs even better.
no fear - August 3rd, 2008 at 6:23 pm
arshavin will be the key player let alone have modric, dos santos, bentley etc… in the team. He is the last and most important piece of the puzzle
Revan - August 3rd, 2008 at 6:25 pm
For me its Bent plus one, if Arsh comes then fine. If not then Im sure we can find someone else that will enjoy playing with Bent. I personally dont know whether Arsh is good enough for the Prem, as YES he was good in the Euro’s but nobody know of him before. I hope he’s not another Rebrov.
Mark - August 3rd, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Please stop this same as same as. I have read this article at least 10 times. Let us wait to see what actually happens and then hopefully celebrate. Off course we Arshavin will be a great signing and we could be challanging for top four.
SAM - August 3rd, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I will have to act like St. Thomas, I will believe it when it happens. Arshavin will have Arsenal dripping with fear. We are looking stronger, but that is pre-season, the real thing is on 17th Aug, which is a totally different ball game. Boro will be geared up for this one.
Ashlley - August 3rd, 2008 at 6:28 pm
if we get arshavin and a center half tottenham will look strong front 2 back he reminds me of helb and gudujhosen he can play on the wing he can play in the whole or he can play up front. If Tottenham get him then we will not be a top 6 side we will be a top 4 side!!!
He won the Uefa Cup for his club and got russia into the last 4 he’s that good.
If tottenham are linked too forlan & ashton 4 19 million i don’t see why we can’t land this Russian Starlet who is cleary more gifted than them even ZIDANE is talking about him……………

i love all this talk of the fantasic attacking midfield we now have but we really need to sort out another quality CB or it wont matter if we score goals but let loads in as well
Bogomil - August 3rd, 2008 at 6:44 pm
From what I’ve seen in the pre-season games, he’d fit in beautifully. Hope Berba stays though, as non of our realistic prospect signings would make adequate replacements. We still need that midfield rock. And lets grab Coloccini before it’s too late.

definitely top 6 as we would have been last season for a 3rd in succession, had we had Ramos from the start. Arrogant it may seem, especially to the likes of Everton and Villa but 5th is the very minimum we can settle for after the summer spending and I don’t think even the most biased Toffee or Villain will tell you they think they have better players at their clubs than Spurs, albeit having signed most of them ths summer. The likes of Modric, dos Santos, Bentley, Berbatov, Jenas, Bent, Bale, Gunter, all the CBs and Gomes are head and shoulders above anything any of them have and I know that sounds biased but if Villa and Everton want to argue, lets look at price tags of players in comparison… Gareth Barry and Mikel Arteta are the 2 top players from both sides and we have better in just one team, with Luka Modric. Arshavin is also better than both of these and will, if he joins Spurs, strengthen us even further! That’s not even mentioning the excellent Jamie O’Har, the slick passing of Tom Huddlestone, however, I am not so deluded as to think every single one (except the already proven Bentley) will be a hit in the Premier League as we all know how hard it is to become an established top name in this division. My honest assessment of our coming season is we should go into it, not bragging or touting ourselves as CL guaranteed but I genuinely think Spurs will finish 3rd this season

What are we going to do with a train? Do we need a train? Eurostar signing….I ask you!!!
thekid - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:14 pm
we need a centre half. we need a centre half
Bob - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Arshavin is a technically gifted creator. He would light up the premier league.
But god, watching todays game, Jenas is terrible. Couldn’t we have sold him to Sunderland too rather than give him a pay rise and longer contract. Watching Jenas play next to Bentley, Dos Santos, Berbs really highlights the fact that the guy can’t kick a ball!
Nobby - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Zokoro can’t kick a ball either.
Some steel at the back and protection from midfield is surely a must.
Spurs 81,82 - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:30 pm
With the players we have added you can tell the difference in class compared to jenas and zokora. The pair of them will struggle to get in to the team what come may. I think we need a solid central defender coz i cant see woodgate or king lasting a long season and we still need a leader!!
If we do we will be looking at top 4 with no probs.
COYS
YIDDAMON - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Hopefully, he will sign for us soon; though I don’t expect it to happen in the near future. Arshavin would be a perfect replacement for Keane. Never mind Berba, his mind is set elsewhere and he seemed disinterested to play for us anymore. With the supply from the likes: Modric, Bentley, Arshavin, Gio and etc., Bent could definitely have 30+ goals this season. Also, no need to care about defence since our motto is to “score” more that “concede”
east lower yid - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:33 pm
bob you need to understand football before you write about it ,who set up the goals for bent and dos santos get off jenas back he is quality
joe - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:35 pm
jenas made two goals today against dortmund hes ok as for modric he reminds me of ardiles who made short passes and one twos around the box and skip pass tackles with ease i remember a player called john white he was 5 foot 7inch tall looked like a gust of wind would blow him over but he was fittest player in the league hardly ever got injured and was one of the best passers of the ball i ever saw they called him the ghost he was special and i believe modric will be as well as for santos hes not a striker but left wing seems his best position his touch and balance are superb spurs have a great chance of top 4 finish if they can sort out defence they look strong but they looked good in pre-season last year and we went 12 games without winning defenders are a must at the moment…………..
Steve - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:50 pm
what the fuck are you talking about Bob? Jenas has been brilliant all pre-season! I hate dick heads like you, always picking on players like Jenas, id like to see JJ get the vice-captaincy now Keanos gone. He was man of the match today incase you didnt notice, clearly another idiot just bad-mouthing players for the hell of it. fuck off to the Scumirates with the other gooners Bob!
Steve - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:52 pm
PLAYER OF THE FUCKING TOURNAMENT BOB! IDIOT!
plamen - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:52 pm
we have keeper now…we have playmaker we have top 4 team
Spurs 81,82 - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Jenas may have set up 2 goals against zee germans but he did give the ball away just as much when we were in the final 3rd which leads too many breakdowns and we get countered, so when our players have made forward runs and the ball is given away, then we are caught just like we were to many times last season. With the modrics etc we play simple, technical and the build up is not rushed and the ball is not given away so much, so the players that have made forward runs recieve the ball instead of being rushed and looking for the final ball, you can see the difference in the players ability already, Gomez hardly kicks the ball long not like robbo did, its simple you keep the ball and make the opp work.
east lower yid - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:54 pm
steve you beat me to it but anway bob you idiot
Are you mad? - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Jenas set up two goals in a friendly games against poor opposition. Big Wow!
Jenas is not quality, get a grip, he is so average it’s painful. I’m a massive spurs fan but not an idiot.
You say we’ll be top four. Would Jenas get in Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal or Man utds team, no. Says it all.
Bent is good but does anyone remember Iverson having a smashing pre season? Keep your feet on the ground and be realistic.
cr3zyid125 - August 3rd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
I really think the top no proplem for boys .Watching them play Scotish champions Celtic and Dortmund and not just Beating them playing them of the park.Another centre half &striker and we will wipe the smile off Arsene Whinger FACE
Bob - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
‘Jenas was the player of the tournament’
Brilliant. That’s amazing. And what a tournament it was too. He’s really going to set the Prem alight like he did last season and the season before!!!!!!!!!!! He’s the best player ever!!!!!!
I don’t mean to give the player shit, I back everyone when wearing the shirt but if we’re talking quality and seriously pushing top four Jenas, Zokoro, Dawson and Lennon wouldn’t make the Arsenal bench, Fact.
Spurs 81,82 - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
The big test is the first 2 games of the season, if we beat the borough and spurs reserves (Sunderland) comfortable we can see how far we have come, i hope we do and we will be set up nicely for the chavski scum full of confidence. We need to beat the small teams comfortable and the big teams we must win or draw to make the top 4.
Steve - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
No-one is being more realistic than me mate, fact is, anyone who scores 9 goals in a week against any professional outfit is worth shouting about! Ok, Bent wasnt fantastic last year but lets be honest, with Keane and Berba playing the way they were, there was no way we could have possibly seperated them to try out Bent in a run of games. Bent now has the ideal chance to show what he can do for the team and IMO has been a breath of fresh air and already has most yids forgetting Robbie Keane’s excellent contribution for the last few years! Now we have the players to compete with the very best and to answer your earlier question, yes I think Jenas could get into the top 4 sides and England thought so last season as well when he was prefered in the centre of midfield to Lampard, Hargreaves, Barry and Carrick, which he soon showed as faith well placed with a goal in his first England recall! Yes i remember Iversen smashing in goals in pre-season but lets be honest, Bent is far more capable than Iversen ever was! Bent is proven in the Premiership as he was top English scorer at Charlton for 2 consecutive seasons! just winds me up the way people forget that, especially the annoying dick head cynical “old school” spurs “supporters” who do nothing but slag the team off every week! Darren Bent will score more goals than Berbatov or Keane next season as he is a more natural goalscorer. he has scored against two CHAMPIONS LEAGUE outfits in 2 days so how you come up with the idea that he is playing against “poor opposition” i dont know!
Steve - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Dawson was our best performer the season before last! as far as Zokora and Lennon go, i agree entirely they are both lacking in ability but as far as getting on Arsenal’s bench goes, Jenas wouldnt be on the bench, he would be starting as would Dawson, in front of that mug Senderos! Jenas is a good player, i know he drops off at times but he is still a very good player and I think were going to see the best of JJ this year. He looks fitter, more athletic and more up for it than in recent months. He will be our most valuable influence in the middle of the park!
Spurs 81,82 - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:13 pm
I have to agree with the Zokora comment, I hate this guy, IWould get rid and quick as i think he is a liability he doesnt lok right at spurs im afraid, And well saying that I cant be the only spurs fan out there that thinks Aaron Lennon is tosh, Watching bentley and Dos santos today just highlights it for me, We should have sold to the barcodes when we had the chance, If he cant cross on the right then he certainly cant cross on the left, shouls have kept Malbranque, Who would you choose Lennon or malbranque on the left, Sorry you cnat choose neither cos we need cover for Bale..
bob - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Dortmund nearly got relegated and celtic are having financial troubles having brought no one this summer.
I wasn’t saying Bent is crap was I? Just said keep your feet on the ground. Someone who wrote he’d score 30+ is clearly insane.
If Jenas was so good why isn’t someone trying to buy him as an alternative to Barry? Why didn’t utd buy him instead of Carrick and Hargreaves? Why didn’t chelsea bid for him with all the millions they have and why wasn’t he touted as a replacement for the Inter (at the time) bound Lampard? It’s because he’s not very good.
Maybe Ramos should turn him into a Sissoko type ball winner as we have real quality, class and intelligence going forward now.
I’m really enjoying writing on here. Never done it before. It sure defo beats arguing with my girlfriend as these are not only arguments I can easily win but I also know I right!
GO get a brain.
Steve - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:25 pm
you know you’re right? thats the thing about oppinions Bob, no-one is right! You have your opinion and I have mine and the only one that matters is that of Juande Ramos. Chelsea, United, Arsenal and Liverpool are all flush with players in those positions and th reason Liverpool are trying to sign Barry is because of his age and experience he brings in with him. Barry is a very good player and I still rate him above Jenas however, Jenas has more natural ability than him and is a more natural athlete. Jenas showed glimpses of what he could do last season, especially in the Carling Cup against the scum. surely you can admit that if he improves on that form and becomes consistently good, then you will all accept that he is a top player?
dibbler - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:34 pm
My god where do you get your ideas from top 4 and turning a 27 year old playmaker in to a defensive ball winner you are delusional it must be the london smog effecting your brain. You seem to have a good manager at last but dont expect miracles overnight it takes time and time to settle in, you have just sold one of you top strikers and it looks like another may go that will be unsettling so will take time to adjust. as for the other teams shaking in there boots not yet but if your manager is another spanish genius like ours you will soon be sayin in ramos we trust. good luck this season and want to take my chance to say what a twat yol was he bought my mate promised him everything and never played him. The guy was clueless.
bob - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Was thinking ball winner esque kind of vibe as a damage limitation…
I thought, what are his strengths?…. Tackling (ish), and hmmmm, running, sometimes running fast and occasionally sprinting and looking like a headless chicken.
But 27 years old, are you kidding me. He’s a finished product, forget potential, this is what we have on our hands…
I just remember all the talk of top 4 last season after us finishing 5th and look what happened. Lets just get off to a good start at Borough and then beat Spurs rejects and home. Then we can start looking upwards. Small steps…
Iverson forever!
Bogomil - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Bob, don’t mind these Jenas nuthuggers. For reasons completely inexplicable to me, they’re still clinging on to the hope that he’ll fulfil his ‘potential’ some nebulous day. Fortunately that sort of mid-table mentality is becoming a thing of the past.
Sam H - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:50 pm
jenas i’m afraid is very hit and miss. at least in my opinion anyway. he can be quality but other times is how you say, anonymous.
pretty good today I felt
as for bent, not convinced. yes I know he has been banging em in for fun in preseason….but so has Zavon Hines for West Ham. exactly, who is he?!
we will see, but things look positive
Terry - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
‘If Jenas was so good … Why didn’t utd buy him instead of Carrick and Hargreaves? Why didn’t chelsea bid for him with all the millions they have ?… It’s because he’s not very good.’
Ok Bob, so you are saying why havent World Class teams approached Jenas, as Man Utd who have just won the Prem and Champs League and lets face it Chelscum are World Class teams. I dont think anybody here has suggested Jenas is a ‘World Class’ player but is most certainly a very good player who certainly deserves a place in our first team. The work he does for the team off the ball, the amount of ground he covers, tackles he wins, and even the odd important goal he scores. He does an important job for the team and when he was absent from our team a couple of seasons ago with injury for a while, we missed him. Ramos believes in him and i think this season will be his best yet for us as he is looking as sharp as ever. Bob go back to arguing with the girlfriend. COYS!!
bob - August 3rd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Jenas is miss, miss, miss, miss, hit, miss, miss, miss, miss, hit, miss, miss, miss, miss….
The hits for some reason are always Arsenal and Wigan. That’s 4 good games a season. He has his moment like any footballer but lacks consitency, technical ability, creative flair and positional awareness…
I have really high hopes, fingers crossed we get the wind in our sails but talking of top 4 is nonsence. This debate shouldn’t even begin until the new year. It’s a waste of everyones time. Lets just start picking up points asap and pray the team gels…
davy41 - August 3rd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
I think we can trim the squad a bit yet with Dawson,Zakora ,Lennon,Rocha ,Stalterri,Huddlestone all being shipped out and Albelda ,Veloso and Villa coming in.This will give us a shot at a top three place easy.Come on Senior Levy get it sorted.
Judgeboy - August 3rd, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Hang on, Jenas got player of the tournament above all other players like Dos Santos, Modric, Berbatov, Bentley etc.. And he’s had the captains armband the whole time, i think he will play more games than you all think!!
BREEZER - August 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
I agree with DAVY41!!!!
But i would keep dawson as cover and bring in one more quality centre half…
How about SAMBA (blackburn)?
makdeyid - August 3rd, 2008 at 10:23 pm
We can challenge for 4th spot if we sign arshavin, a centreback and a defensive midfielder and keep Berba. If Berba goes then add a striker to the list. Let the team gel for a season, Then i think we can challange for the title.
Woolrich Gypies - August 3rd, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Bob is a star. If Jenas couldnt get into the United team, hes not good enough 4 us. Fans who accept the likes of Jenas are the enemy within. The 20-something wankers who think were doing well cos we come 5th, and crucially, DONT DEMAND MORE FROM THE BOARD, are the enemy within. Ironically, at the moment, the board is more ambitious than u idiots. Why dont u all piss off to Villa. Bob, ur a hero!

Spurs revolution - August 4th, 2008 at 1:45 am
Spurs need a midfield enforcer like Abelda, Senna, De Rossi ,diarra
and a quality centre back in the ,ould of matthew upson to backup for King and Woodgate…that will really push us to challenge for top 4 and silverware
2008 is year the year for spurs….cheers!!!
ol'vic - August 4th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Having watched the pre-season friendlies, there is a distinct change in the style of play which is heartening. Shorter, more fluid, passes and retained possession was evident, Also we saw the midfield and defensive areas flooded with players when under attack giving us more chance of breaking down attacks and regaining possession. Then there were no big kicks out of defence to a lone striker. Instead we kept the ball and played it out allowing the midfield to attack as a unit giving numerous options. Gomez is a revelation. He is confident and helps fluidity by rolling or throwing the ball to a teamate instead of the big kick. Huddlestone was playing as a sweeper which suits him and the team. Overall we are seeing Ramos’s vision and I believe top four is a reality.

Good times ahed for the spurs.if i was a little critical it wud be to buy a centre back(why not jump in for colocini?).Shud woodgate and king stay fit then for sure a top 4 finish is more than acheivable but the likelyhood of that happening is zero to none,so while its great that there is alot of understandable excitement at white hart lane I wud be more confident shud they sign a defender equal to the offensive side of the team.
calvo - August 4th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Jenas get into 1 of the top 4?….NEVER!hargreaves is as mobile with a better tactical brain, carrick is a much better passer and more composed.even anderson has more abt him.masch is levels above most cm in the world never mind jenas, alonso is a better passer, can only dream of being in the same league as gerrard, lamps scores ,more goals ballack is world-class,essien is physically stronger…etc etc basically he wud never get into any of those teams and if i was to pik my 1st 11 for spurs then he wud not be part of that.i mentioned earlier that spurs shud get a defender I wud also add a decent alround midfielder preferably experienced.gomez, hutton, king, huddlestone, woodgate, bale, bentley,?,modric, dos santos,berba/bent.
