The chase for Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry is heating up, with Arsenal and Liverpool going head-to-head for the midfielder, and both managers offering makeweights to sweeten the deal!
Arsene Wenger wants to sign a central midfielder following Mathieu Flamini’s summer move to AC Milan.
However, the London club will find themselves in a similar situation to Liverpool, when it comes to matching Villa’s valuation and there would a significant amount of haggling to be done.
Like Liverpool, Arsenal would be keen to include players in the transfer and defenders Justin Hoyte and Armand Traore are both potential make-weights. (Telegraph)
It seems like a sensible idea, Aston Villa have a pretty small squad to draw from and they are asking a lot in return for Gareth Barry. Liverpool offered Steve Finnan in their bid and now it appears that Arsene is following suit.
Justin Hoyte will struggle to make an impression in the first team again this season and, over the past five years, the defender has managed just 24 Premier League starts and is very unlikely to unseat Sagna for the right-back berth. However, Traore may not be a player that Wenger should sell off. The 18-year-old has shown glimpses of great potential and was rewarded with his first Premier League start towards the end of last season.
Sometimes it seems like the Barrygate saga will never end, and it wouldn’t be too surprising to see him stuck at Villa, as no one is ready to meet the Midlands club’s valuation. Do Arsenal fans think they should sacrifice players in a deal to bring Gareth to north London?
