Tottenham striker Darren Bent may well become a far more pivotal player at White Hart Lane this term. He has shown in his first season at the club that he has the potential, but may just need more time to prove his worth. He managed to score goals at a very healthy ratio whilst at struggling Charlton, and the England international will hope to build on an impressive pre-season and start 08/09 with a bang.
West Ham ace Dean Ashton is a great centre forward who has unfortunately been hampered by injuries a great deal since his move from Norwich to Upton Park. On his day, he scares the hell out of centre backs, who are unable to cope with his overpowering physique combined with great touch, while he can be almost unstoppable in the air. The 24-year-old deserves to add to his solitary England cap and, if he manages to stay clear of troublesome knocks, he is a 20-goal-a-season striker.

Im a Gooner - and i would say that Bent is much better. Aside from last yr (where he was put outside the starting team by keane/berbatov), previous 2 yrs he was popping in goals for charlton of all teams.
And the fact that West Ham tried to sign him says it all…

The fact that Ashton has more recently been called up to the England squad and Capello has said he features highly in his plans I would say Ashton
Also although recovering from a serious injury last season Ashton still outscored Bent
Also the fact that Tottenham wanted Ashton as a replacement for the deadwood in Bent I would say Ashton. Sir Alex Ferguson also made an enquiry over Ashton not Bent

Im Spurs but id have Asthon over Bent, Bent is too one dimensional and can only play one way, plus he has the touch of a rapist, all these friendly goals dont mean nothin im afraid. When Berbs does go Asthon wouldnt be a bad replacement as hes more of a creator then a scorer, he can hold the ball up well and works his bollox off even it a touch slow.

Last season Ashton had started 20 games (subed off 5 of those) and was a sub 10 times scoring 10 goals. He played 2000 minutes of football in the league averaging a goal ever 200 minutes.
Bent started 11 games (sub off on 7 of those occassions) and came on as sub 16 times scoring 6 goals. His avergage minutes per goal was 191 having played for 1147 minutes.
So with there only being 9 minute per goal there is not a lot of difference in averages. But with Bent only starting and staying on for 4 games and most of his appreances being from the subs bench, i think if he gets a run in the team he will score many more than Ashton who is also prone to injury. My vote goes to Bent.

For me it is Ashton but then I’m a Hammer. I still wanted Bent too as they would have complimented each other, which is the broad idea with Bellamy at the club. Bent is quick and will get you more goals. Ashton is a good finisher too and better with his head. Whats swings it for me, is that Ashton has a great touch (like Sheringham ) and he can bring people into play as a target man. There are not many players like Ashton around who can play the type of role that Shearer and Sherringham played. His problem is injuries, he strikes me as one of those players who will always pick up an injury. If it was’nt for that he would be subject to much interest from other clubs

The only reason Bent is getting minutes on the pitch in pre-season is because Defoe left in January and Keane has just left. Bent is a good player but no where near as good as Ashton. Seriously you have a look at how Ashton plays he is so precised and accurate at what he does. He will be a force this season for Westham.
And to sum up for a little conclusion, well Ashton made the last few England squads, and where was Bent???? not even in the 30 odd man squad.

Both are good players and each provides their respective teams with something differnt. Bent makes sure the Tottenham bench is warm (maybe not this season though!) and Ashton ensures the treatment table is well used and the physios are busy! lol
