Liverpool manager assumes deal for Aston Villa skipper is a foregone conclusion: He plans to show him off on Friday!
by offsidetrap on August 5th, 2008Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez isn’t wasting any time letting Aston Villa supporters know that their skipper is nearing the conclusion of a deal that will see him leave the club. The goateed-one is so sure that Barry will be at the club in fact, that he’s making plans to show off his new midfielder to the red half of Merseyside on Friday!
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
Rafael Benitez had hoped to have secured the Aston Villa player’s signature in time to feature in the friendly against Valerenga in Norway. But the Liverpool manager is now planning to show off his latest signing against Lazio at Anfield on Friday, the club’s final friendly before facing Sunderland on Aug 16.
Much depends on whether Tom Hicks and George Gillett, Liverpool’s co-owners, can meet Villa’s asking price, but the indications emerging from Anfield suggested that the saga will be concluded very soon.
Villa value Barry at around £18 million, more than Liverpool were originally prepared to pay, but Hicks and Gillett are now understood to have agreed to underwrite the fee in what amounts to a short-term loan.
Steve Finnan, who has spent the last five years at Anfield, could move to the West Midlands as part of the transfer. (Daily Telegraph)
Well this is a bit premature. Whilst the word coming down the pipe is that Barry is moving to Anfield before the start of the season, this is the first I’ve heard that he’s going to be a done-and-dusted Liverpool player by Friday. Does Rafa know something we don’t?
Do Liverpool supporters think the Barry deal is all but done? Do Aston Villa supporters think the current deal of £18m plus Steve Finnan is enough for your ace midfielder?

great player, gonna win da league 4 sure, eat ur hearts out scummy robbing mancs!!!!!!!!
billy - August 5th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I think its a great deal for us, 18 million and steve finnan, Barrys good but thats a big price tag i just hope he lives up to all Liverpool’s fans expectations. To be honest last season and the season before he had the best seasons he has had for a long time and i think that was all down to Oneil.
Just hope Rafa can get the best from him, if he dont hit it off we could always have him back for 3 million in January, and to be honest there is going to be a lot of pressure on Barry has he’s going to have a massive price tag and the fans are’nt all that sure about him.
decky - August 5th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
em where did rafa say anything about having him signed by friday??? direct quotes are a thing of the past are they??? fuck sake sum bullshit
Johnboy - August 5th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Does rafa know something we dont???
Well obviously - Id be surprised if we knew as much as the Liverpool manager about whats going on with new signings.
And the “goateed-one” is so sure of unveiling him on Friday according to the press not Rafa himself.
The media report used in this article is a whole lot of nothing really.
JJ - August 5th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
“this is the first I’ve heard that he’s going to be a done-and-dusted Liverpool player by Friday”
Since when does rafa have to inform you when players are going to sign. ?? One thing is certain IF the deal goes through Barry will be at least a month behind everyone else in terms of pre season training so his match fitness wont be anywhere near 100% so it makes sense to get him play ing games immediately
decky - August 5th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
we need wingers way more then barry
charley - August 5th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
What a waste of money, that we don’t have !!!!
Alonso is 2-3yrs younger EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP winner Champions League winner FA Cup winner.
Barry plays for Villa and has, in his 10 glorious years, won ? Has he even played in europe ??
Shocking transfer value by O’Neil who is just a clueless joke and should stick to TV with his drawn out pointless comments.
Tipsy Mcstagger - August 5th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
18 million is a good deal for us Barry quite clearly wants to leave so let him go i think LFC are paying way over the odds as they did with Keane.
Barry was a good player for villa but not irreplaceable.
billy - August 5th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Liverpool get their Barry back, but is it Gareth Barry or Barry Grant off brookside.
just take Barry, give us the 18 million and steve finnan and do one, i tell you what if we get that ammount, Oneil and Lerner wont be able to take their masks off until they get back to Villa park.
paddy - August 5th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
mad price for an average player we dont need. we need real wingers, 18 - 20 m for silva, much better signing adds pace and flare and that is what we lack. come on rafa stop smokin that crack pipe
billy - August 5th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
its great!!!!
David Villa - August 5th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
This article is based on something a crap paper made up. I’ll only believe Barry’s coming when Rafa says - not the daily telegraph
lfc 69 - August 5th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
so what if alonsos an euro championship winner, not like he played a big role, and hes been crap for livpool for the last 2 seasons so let him go
kopman - August 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
ye i hope barry comes, hes been on better form than alonso of late
billy - August 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Barrys coming and the quicker he goes and we get that money in the bank gaining interest the better.
He will never be a player like he has been for Villa and he will realise that when he’s at anfield.
im just wandering his he going to play? when mascherano, gerrard and alonso are fit.
To be honest i watched Liverpool the other day and their best player was Benayoun and alonso also had a good game when he came on.
michael - August 5th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Silva wud b an amense prem player but 2 b a prem player 4 liverpool u need to b stong and fast dats why morenties didn’t cut it silva has 1 of those 2 Torres has both dats why he is so good barry has both and a proven player who cares if he dosen’t av champions legue ex. nearly every 1 of our player has it
michael - August 5th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Sorry I meant silva wud b an amense champions league player instead of prem
lickrafasbumsters - August 5th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
You’re 100% right Billy
Barry can go and good riddance to him.
The sooner the better.
PS - Am I right that he has bought a mansion next door to Stevie Girlie Voice Me so they can hold hands over the fence!
Ben - August 5th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Yes this would be good! still need a winger though!
Ben - August 5th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Would be a good signing! still need a winger though!!
billy - August 5th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Alonso has just scored again 2 in 2 games and it was a good goal, i reckon its going be tough for Barry to get in the team.
I reckon Barry could get more pitch time cutting gerrards lawn!!!!!
hehehehehe
billy - August 5th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
ive just heard Gerrards done his groin again, not looking good for the dream team, hopefully Barry will nip next door to rub some ointment, into his groin and he will be has fit as a fiddle for the start of the season.
Steve - August 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Gonna be skint and 5th!
danny pacheco's left nut - August 5th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
…for all the talk of its either alonso OR barry - and what is the starting central midfield partnership likely to be on Friday? Probs Barry AND Alonso (if the yanks & parry pull their fingers out!!!)
just goes to show that with a few players at the Olympics and a tweak to another’s groin how important the strength in depth can be. rafa knows what he’s doing - the question is do the yanks???
Ticky - August 5th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Come on yanks, dig deep to buy Barry AND keep Alonso - you know it makes sense. Just watches Xabi put in a great performance, and I can’t believe Rafa is prepared to let him go. Okay, so he’s had a poor couple of seasons, but perhaps this has been the kick up the arse that will bring out the best in him. He looks sharper and scoring goals. If he was playing for another team, Rafa would be breaking the bank to sign him…and rightly so too! The lad’s class.
samuel charles - August 5th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
if barry comes then he has to get in at left wing back or sub ready to come on and fill and centre mid role……
no im not joking he isnt good enough to play above mascehrano or alonso… or gerrard…
he will be better to hendge his bets as a left back come wing back. full back form the left channel….. deal with it barry……….. you want it to go well at liverpool…….. well work for it mate
jobby - August 5th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
is rafa planning ahead?……..with englishness?….dunno!………but if we dont win the fucking league this time, i’m of to watch st helens at rugby! (Hold on, i’ve been saying that shit since about 1992!). REDS FANS ARE ALWAYS REDS FANS!!!!!!!!!WALK EFFIN ON!!!!!!!
chas-villa - August 6th, 2008 at 6:02 am
Barry will be having his medical tomorrow morning, Finnan & Shorey will be in this week, trying to get wright-phillips in but he is not sure what he wants at the moment, this is the gossip at the training ground.
our lad - August 6th, 2008 at 9:08 am
reckon all this juve talk and barry talj is the kick up the hole alonso neeeded.last season not great but great players dont become bad overnight so i think this season he will be back to the xabi we all know and love.pre season he looks sharp.as for barry i would forget about it now.at the start it sounded brilliant but when o neill kept raising the asking price got messy.he aint worth that.yah he can give us grit in midfeild, but with stevie and masch who needs any more grit than them two.whereas alonso is a classier stlye of player.spend the cash elsewhere stevie wonder can see we need a bloody winger.18m get you a great wide man.
Aman Ramdeyal - August 6th, 2008 at 10:33 am
I think we have to wait and see if we sign Gareth Barry from Villa. It will be nice to have him in the squad but weather he plays is another thing. Alonso is really playing well. The goal he scored last nite was a very good goal. Yossi has been our best player in pre season and I hope he can carry that form into the league. I have also heard from a mate of my who says that DIC are still in talks with the owners about taking over the club. Anyone else heard anything about this?
Kop4Life - August 6th, 2008 at 10:35 am
I’ll keep writng this all silly season, even if all we could buy were Englishmen from Aston Villa, Ashley Young not Barry would be the right choice
billy - August 6th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Barrys at anfield today for a medical and to finalise is 18 million pound deal, good riddance!!!!!!!, and cheers for the 18 million pounds and Finnan Liverpool!!!!!!!!!!!
villafan - August 6th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Hahaha! Suckers! Thanks for the £18m! He’s only worth half that!
Ross - August 6th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
“Does Rafa know something we don’t?”
I should think it extremely likely that Rafa knows more about this transfer than anyone on this site, yes.
james - August 7th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Can I just say to ‘Charley’ who says “Alonso is 2-3yrs younger EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP winner Champions League winner FA Cup winner.” Gareth Barry was bord Feb 81, Alonso Nov 81, not exaclty the 2-3 years he quotes.
Now whos the ‘Clueless Joker’
