The bookmakers aren’t expecting the Reds to win any silverware next season, despite the big-money acquisition of Robbie Keane, and with Gareth Barry likely (but not certain!) to follow. Liverpool are fourth-favourites to win the Premier League, although that appears to be the main ambition of a certain Spanish striker who wears the number nine shirt at Anfield.
The Liverpool Echo reports that Fernando Torres loves scoring goals but would be even happier if he can see his reflection in the Premier League trophy at the end of the campaign, rather than that lovely antique mirror that he bought fron Quiggens warehouse. It’s clear that the Spaniard is hungry for more success after his country won Euro 2008, but will he enjoy any with his club side?
“I was a little bit tired on Saturday because I’ve only had one week’s training, but I will be more or less fit for the start of the Premier League season.
“I hopefully want to win that trophy or maybe the Champions League.”
Defensively, one would expect the Reds to be a far stronger proposition than last season, with Agger returning and Skrtel being around from the start of the campaign. However, is the Champions League going to be a more realistic competition to win or are Liverpool finally going to be done with false dawns and do the business in the Premier League this term?
