Juande Ramos looks to this Manchester City man to help ease defensive worries!
Tottenham Hotspur were last night on the verge of agreeing a £6.8 million fee to sign Vedran Corluka, which would take their spending on players this summer to more than £50 million.
The Croatia defender was used at right back by Manchester City last season, but Tottenham believe that he can replace Ledley King in the long term as a central-defensive partner for Jonathan Woodgate. Tottenham, who were unable to complete deals to sign Fernando Meira or Fabricio Coloccini, have been looking at more than one centre back because of fitness concerns about King and the erratic form of Michael Dawson last season. Vedran Corluka is a calm, assured and talented defender who I believe is far better as full-back, but if Ramos believes he can also serve Tottenham well in the centre of defence, then I am sure he is more aware than I am of the Croat’s abilities. Either way, he is a signing well worth making.
Clearly there are injury concerns that may well affect the long-term future of King, and therefore it makes sense to plan accordingly. Ideally, Woody and Ledley would be the dream centre-back pairing but right now, there is little in the way of quality cover, so it’s no surprise that Juande is looking at alternatives. Dawson is far too hit-and-miss and, whilst he is a determined customer, he clearly has failings and at worst he is unreliable and liable to make mistakes. Do Spurs fans believe Corluka could be a clever signing or should they look elsewhere to support their main centre-back pairing?
