Hands up who wants Newcastle’s goal shy goon at Everton?
by Dexter on August 7th, 2008Everton fans have been waiting a long time for this moment - an entire summer in fact - and finally they are going to buy someone…
Tragically that ’someone’ is none other than Newcastle’s Alan Smith, the man who Everton once fancied as a partner for Wayne Rooney, but who now inexplicably plies his trade in midfield - a position from where he has rustled the onion bag precisely zero times in over thirty appearances for the Toon Army.
Newcastle United striker Alan Smith was missing for the Magpies tonight at St James’s Park for their friendly with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
That was the big news ahead of kick off tonight with Smith absent for Kevin Keegan’s side on the one year milestone since his first goal for the club on his Toon debut against Sampdoria.
The striker wasn’t injured and has been linked strongly in the last two days with a move to Everton following Andy Johnson’s departure to Fulham. (Evening Chronicle Live)
Smith has had a wretched time recovering from his horror injury sustained whilst playing for Man Utd, but this is surely a good deal; following up the sale of Andy Johnson to Fulham for megabucks with the purchase of Smith for a mere £2million. So, Smith to Goodison - good move, or desperate buy??

GET HIM SIGNED UP,HIS ATTITUDE TO HIS TEAM IS A LOT BETTER THAN A CERTAIN VICTOR ANICHEBE AND THE PRICES QUOTED ARE A BARGAIN,MOYES WILL PUT HIM RIGHT
gooner get ya - August 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
good 4 smith and everton, he’s a quality player who’ll always give 110 per cent but he must be played as a striker then every1 will see the class alan smith of a couple of seasons ago
bluZZZZZ - August 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Anichebe is far better than smith he’s a stronger player who like to piss of defenders! remember the Chelski defenders …..
Blue Evertonian - August 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I have ALWAYS rated Smith. He has the right spirit and all he needs is team mates like he will have at Everton and a Manager like Moyes to bring out the best in him yet again. Come on Alan …. prove em wrong!!
Jason Broome - August 7th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I think his attitude is all wrong. He moans like a bitch when things go wrong and blames team-mates openly on the pitch. Could be OK in the Carsley or Cahill role… but striker..? fuck off!
Got my mouth all ready to sing Moutinho, Fernandes (still £6 million and playing well now), Arshavin, Joaquin or Pablo Aimar this season and this could be the shit they come home with.
Sad thing is, we need him.
IRON BALLS McGINTY - August 7th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Anichebe only gets used as a sub because he is only any good when defenders are knackered, his commitment to Everton is piss poor, don’t you think he should of stayed and got a good pre season under his belt in the hope of getting into the first team ? to me he is quite content to be a bit part player and that is not good enough, give me Alan Smith any day, this lad can play 90 minutes with 110% attitude
TofyLad - August 7th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
I think Moyes would get the best out of him, and he will have a point to prove. Get him signed!!
kovolikessoccer - August 7th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Do it. Just Sign him already. What are they waiting for?
Scoobyslapper - August 7th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Hahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!
You Everton fans have no idea what’s about to hit you.
Smith has no talent at all. No position, no pace, no goals in him, gets a suspension every 5 games, can’t hold the ball up and runs around like a headless chicken. And he played just as many games up front as he did in midfield last season.
Really, the game has moved on since smith was muscling defenders about for Leeds. No he jsut gets yellow cards and gives away fould every game.
I am amazed that Newcastle are able to offload this waste of space so easily and to a rival club! Priceless.
Hadrian - August 7th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Take him please , u can have him for free if you haggle enough im sure .
dont exect much tho, we were pretty happy when we singed him , now id give him away . and its not down to recovering from that injury or bad luck , he’s just really really crap now . shame as he usedtobe one of my fav players at leeds , but yeah , we’ll swap him for a cookie or maybe a bag of chips for ashley .
Nick Dryden - August 7th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Please take him and his partner in crime Barton. A pair of braindead, moronic thugs on astronomical wages.
Ross - August 7th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
toon fan coming in peace here guys.
i’m sorry to say it but if you guys take smith i’ll be just as pleased as i would be us making a new signing.
the lad runs around without stopping for 90 minutes but gives nothing worth while when he’s out there. he’s on 60K a week at newcastle and he hasnt scored a competitive goal since man utd beat roma years ago. he’s scored once for us in a pre season friendly agaisnt sampdoria.
without meaning to sound harsh i really cant understand why any of you are excited about this, yet the majority of newcastle fans are over the moon at the thought of him leaving.
Geordie Joe - August 7th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Alan smith is probably the worst player we have and that is definatly saying something. trust me everton, if you actually pay money for someone so poor then moyes is loosing his mind. I would rather play with ten men than have him on the pitch. He was average at leeds, and most players would look good playing in a team with the likes of ronaldo, rooney, giggs etc.
toon 24/7 - August 7th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
HAHAHA U TOFFEES ARE GONA BE SICK AS A PARROT WHEN U GET THAT WASTE OV SPACE,HAHAH
toon 24/7 - August 7th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
There’s now way Everton could afford Smith.. Hey you Toffee suckers we’re in the Premership. Strikers cost more that spare change. I recon KK is only objecting to the sale to save you guys the embarassment of telling you don’t have enough cash even to buy one of our out of form players.
bluZZZZZ - August 7th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I have to agree I realy dont see why moyes would want to sign him ? he is a price COCK! We should take owen tho. he grew up supporting everton and his dad played for us, if your gonna cut his wages watch this space i think its more likely we’ll sign owen than smith.
lee - August 7th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Can only agree with previous comments, think his game has dropped big style from his leeds days, anyone would look half decent in a man united side. and ferguson dosent sell good players, a few people raised eyebrows when he sold us nicky butt, but although much improved last season he is still far from the player he was in his prime. would like king kev to sign yossi benayoun from liverpool. midfield playmaker who can chip in with plenty of goals. and might offer better value for money, than the crazy prices being mentioned for the likes of arshavin.
oj - August 7th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
who would want to play for newcastle? pile of crap!! he’ll do well at everton.. smith was always good at leeds, and man united.. no1 can be bothered playing for newcastle with their average manager and bottom half team hahahahahaha load of shite
lee - August 7th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
like i said though Leeds and man united were very good sides , everton arn,t of that standard. and there for smith will struggle just as much at everton as he has at toon.anyway average we maybe.but we are a much bigger club than the likes of everton. attendances don’t lie!
sugarforever - August 7th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Lee - so ruud Van nistelrooy, japp staam, roy keane are not good players then? What a weird thing to say!?
oj.. why are you so bitter about newcastle? we’ll take our chances next season like everyone else - we know we’ve been awful for a long time but we do have the infrastructure for growth and exciting times in the future- which is why we have some cautious optimism- as daft as KK may be - he is cherished by the toon army because he still believes that football is about bringing drama and joy to people’s lives… so we’ll see what happens! Good luck to yee toffees.. especially in your derby matches!
Paul - August 7th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
If this goes through you Newcastle fans are going to be feeling pretty silly pretty soon. Par for the course I suppose
Steve - August 8th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Paul I think you might end up with Egg on your face.
Nick Dryden - August 8th, 2008 at 6:54 am
Paul if it goes through we’ll be delirious !
VALLE - August 8th, 2008 at 7:47 am
lee comment 19- you are an idiot. newcastle a bigger team than everton? are you having a laugh? i dont support either team but everton are a massive team who have won 4 times the amount of trophies newcastle have. newcatle had a bigger ground than arsenal until they moved, so were newcastle a bigger team than arsenal were back then.
newcastle have never been one of the biggest teams in the country . the biggest 5 are man yoo , arsenal, liverpool, everton and spurs. chelsea have bought success so i suppose they now have to be included also. newcastle are below teams like forest, villa, leeds and portsmouth and are on a par with sunderland and blackburn
spyro - August 8th, 2008 at 8:21 am
ah nick drydon, ross and toon24/7. the idiots from the newcastle blog. fancy seeing you here.
Newcastle is the graveyard of premiership footballers. Smith might actually do well for everton but i think moyes is taking a massive gamble if smith is to be there only signing. He is worth no more than 2 million max.
Agree with valle that everton are a massive club, much bigger than newcastle. they havent won anything for a while but they are still well supported and have an impressive history.newcastle have never won anything in my lifetime and it doesnt look as though that will change anytime soon with crap like guthrie.
good luck everton fans for the coming season and i hope newcastle get relegated so i dont have to have there racist fans coming to my city again.
amble_ball - August 8th, 2008 at 8:43 am
I’ve been holding my breath ever since this move was first mentioned, praying it will go through. Alan Smith is without question one of the worst players I have ever seen in a Newcastle shirt. You lads on here must all be completly off your tits if you think this is a good signing. Honestly, are you talking about the same player? The only way this could be of any use to you is if you actually wanted a striker who CAN NOT score but can run around at full pelt for an hour and a half collecting bookings and giving away free kicks. 2 Million? Two million pounds? I can’t believe it. This would be the best bit of transfer dealing in history. He was alright at Leeds yes, but did you see him play for even five minutes last season? You obviously didn’t if you think this is anything but a disaster for your club. Anyway, all the best. Couldn’t of happened to a nicer set of fans
Tino11 - August 8th, 2008 at 10:22 am
The truth is that Smith is a £60 grand a week drain on any club that employs him, he will get more bookings than goals, he is too slow to even realise when a chance to shoot presents it’s self, he cant pass more than 5 yards , he cant tackle and ends up flat on his back more than Madonna, he will however clench his fist alot , shout in peoples faces and run around like a bull in a china shop . Moyes will try to play him as a striker at first but his lack of movement, goals or link up play will force him to drop deeper into midfield where he will be totaly lost and sliding into challenges like a 13 year old ………. please let this transfer go through
IRON BALLS McGINTY - August 8th, 2008 at 10:57 am
LISTENING TO YOU GEORDIE BOYS I THINK ID RATHER HAVE MICK QUINN THAN ALAN SMITH,HE WOULD ONLY BE USED AS A SQUAD PLAYER ANYWAY AS HOPEFULLY WE NOW HAVE A FULLY FIT JAMES VAUGHAN WHO I THINK IS BETTER THAN MOST STRIKERS IN THE PREMIERSHIP
haz - August 8th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
i always liked the lad and his commitment to the club, but unfortunately he’s not the player he was, his confidence and ability have gone now leaving nothing but a variety of changing hair cuts, and i dont think moyes is the man to change that. shame he deserves a break (preferabely not to the leg as he’s not very good recovering from those)

COS, ever think of having a rating system for the comments like they have for you-tube?
I think many pll read the comments after reading your articles, and pll will think before making stupid written comments.
