Liverpool look to capture £12m BARGAIN buy: Rafa isn’t happy!
by Mr Comfort on August 11th, 2008It seems that Rafa is once again being undermined by his Liverpool bosses, and this time the actions of the club’s owners might just cost him the signing of a long-term target!

Liverpool’s owners have set their own price on Gareth Barry – just £12million.
And that cut-price valuation will cause more problems with boss Rafa Benitez.
The Anfield boss is not happy that Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett agree with chief executive Rick Parry that Aston Villa’s £18m asking price for the England midfielder is unrealistic.
The Liverpool heirarchy are only prepared to do business if Villa slash a third off their Barry price-tag.
The move will anger Villa boss Martin O’Neill, who has now told his former captain he can leave after a summer spent trying to resist Liverpool’s overtures.
Benitez will be just as furious - and the situation could re-open rifts between the Spaniard and his employers. (Sunday Mirror)
Well this is an interesting move by Messrs Hicks, Gillett and Parry, and a move that will clearly anger both Martin O’Neill and Rafa Benitez. It’s true that many believe 18m was a tad too pricey for the England man, but a bid of 12m would represent something of a bargain and it would be interesting to see what happens next. If this report is accurate, then the Aston Villa manager will have to consider his options. Does he tell Liverpool to stick their offer where the sun doesn’t shine and risk being stuck with a player who doesn’t want to be at the club, or does he cut his losses and end this long drawn-out affair?
As for Rafa, he has every right to be annoyed by this news, clearly he wants Gareth Barry but doesn’t want to sink to such a level that might further ruin relations between the two sides. What do Liverpool fans think is a fair price for the 27-year-old midfielder?

Once again the Yanks have undermined Rafa, Barry is probably worth around 15m, but what really needs to happen is for the Americans to get lost and for DIC to buy the club.
Anonymous - August 11th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
what is so complicated about this transfer that needs 1500 threads and endless newspaper column inches?!
Barry is under contract at Villa, and they have set a price of 18m
a) liverpool pay 18m = liverpool get barry!
b) liverpool dont pay 18m = barry stays at villa!
am i missing something?
rafa - August 11th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Barry is worth about 13 million tops.
shadda2002 - August 11th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
your missing nothing - this site exists on the Barry story
ry - August 11th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Why would Rafa want to stick around after this season if those dumb tossers keep undermining him. Let Rafa do his job, he obviously thinks Barry is worth the money. If Rafa doesn’t win the league, he’s probably going to get the axe, and the owners are preventing him from doing what he thinks is necessary to win the league, so its a lose-lose situation for Rafa. H&G need to leave.
Ridwaan - August 11th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
i would say around 15 million. Still what am nt understanding is why barry has not yet requested a transfer and have the price cut by around 3 million. does he really want 2 cme??
Ryan - August 11th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
13-14 million is all I could imagine paying for him. 15 may be the top because Liverpool are in such desperate need of a solid left footed midfielder. This whole situation is crazy. It will all be decided though after Villa’s UEFA Cup game at least.
Liverliver - August 11th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
He is worth 14 millions!!! Or less!
julz - August 11th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
if Barry wants to join Liverpool he should hand in a transfer request and therefore forego his loyaty bonuses, Then Villa would then accept less than the 18 million, as they dont have to pay barry his royalties. Whats more important money or playing for the team you want to, c’mon barry sort it out !!
Role on the 1st of September and all this talk will be over.
Mr.Amany - August 11th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
I think Barry isn’t worth 18 million but then again neither were Hargreaves or Carrick.Once again the Mancs have messed football up.Barry is worth about 13-15 mill.Rafa should be going for people like Silva or Queresma.
Its clear that we love Xabi and obviously prefer him to Barry.
max - August 11th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Aston Villa face the prospect of an unhappy player but also one who can buy out the last year of his contract in less than 11 months for way less than the quoted figures of 18m and 12 mill. Are they preapared to risk having an unhappy player for 12 months and then lossing him for a few milliion pounds?
pete - August 11th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Barry - price is a joke.Martin O’Moan has priced him out of a move. We should wait till January and buy him for peanuts. M O’Moan needs to get real. The player asked to leave effectively, Villa leaked Liverpools offer and O’Moan has spouted his gobshite ever since. Fuck him and his InterToto club.
slicky4 - August 11th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
rival teams are always goin to over price their players. especially if its goin to strengthen us. i agree that if barry really wants to play for us then he should hand in a transfer request, and fulfill his dreams of playin in the champions league.. 15mil tops
Adam - August 11th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Just consider this: Benitez has made it clear he really wants Barry. Villa, as is their right, have set their highest price. The feeling in Villa is that Rafa is willing to spend the money so why would they ever drop that price? If the Liverpool owners now come along and basically appear to undermine the manager and take a firmer more business-like stance, it changes the story. Villa thought they were going to get maximum price but they must now very seriously think about dropping their asking price. It’s a very real possibility that this is just more tricky negotiating tactics from Liverpool and if it brings the price down to, say 15 million or so, isn’t it worth the bad press?
Danny - August 12th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Pete, at what point did you look at a typical January transfer and think that it was ‘peanuts’? It is true that Barry’s value to Liverpool will drop once he becomes cup-tied for European and domestic cup competitions, however Villa are unlikely to see this as a problem. Most of or all January transfers are at well above the market value of a player because no team wants to lose players mid-way through a campaign, which drives the asking prices up.
I completely agree that if Barry really wants to play for us that he should hand in a transfer request. Clearly he is only interested in having a nice big payday and playing alongside former roommate Stevie G. He doesn’t care about playing for Liverpool FC. This is not the kind of player we should be buying.
Villasux - August 12th, 2008 at 12:47 am
Clearly Barry is not worth 18million and everybody knows that. Villa will only sell if the price is met, so they are only willing to let go of Barry for that rediculous amount of money and nothing less. Rafa is not stupid, he knows that Barry is not worth that much either but it seems like he really wants Barry and would rather pay more. I guess, if you really want something badly, you’ll have to pay extra and that’s the way it is sometimes.
Liverpres - August 12th, 2008 at 1:00 am
If Barry wasnt worth 18million, Rafa would have bought somebody else ages ago. We are asking for 16-18million for Alonso - if Alonso is worth that, Barry is worth a minimum 20million. Liverpool board are absolute tools if they think Barry is only worth 12million - he is an international player at his peakAlonso is an out-of-form international bench-warmer and we price him higher than Barry - wake up idiots!!
Rich - August 12th, 2008 at 1:03 am
I honestly would price him around 15-16m.
The lad is a good player and a lot of peoples personal valuations are from their hearts as fans rather than their heads.
If we pay 18m for him though I would still consider that decent.
REDHED - August 12th, 2008 at 3:41 am
what you’re all forgetting is Barry has already sacrificed his testimonial ( about the same as his royalities) so he has shown the intent, but GB is no fool if he puts in a transfer request hes out on a long limb, and look whats happened already! fuckin yanks stink. and if rolly poly keane is worth 20 then so is GB, and keane hasn’t come near a goal yet!!
Zekk67 - August 12th, 2008 at 3:56 am
I woulod only consider if he is offered to us at 8m or less. Waste of money if we were to pay any higher. We do not pay so much for a bench warmer.
Jumbo - August 12th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Liverpres - bang on mate, couldn’t have put it better myself

Usual idiots argueing about …NOTHING!!!!
Your not football fans, your soap watchers who think life centre’s around you …. fools!
Please get a life and stop all the gossip, NO-ONE here knows the inside story …. and all the arguing about who is worth more …. NO-ONE is worth 18m or 16m or 12m as they may not perform at there new club, so value is based on there present situation, not the future situation, so every buy is speculation (gamble)!
Grow up and get back to supporting your clubs and stop all this negative crap as its just bring football down! AV set a price, LFC won’t pay it … END of discussion!!!!
Good luck next season and the sooner the season starts the better as watching the real game is some much sweeter then reading idiots argue there point about bull and crap
TO ALL people who knock our owners … YOU ARE NOT A LFC FAN, otherwise you would be talking the club UP.. NOT DOWN! Shame on you!!!
I have spent the summer trying to instill some common-sense into these blogs …. but i have to say I will not be visiting these sites again after today, I can’t believe after 40+ years of being a LFC fan and a football fan that we have turned into idiots who seem to think anyone cares about our narrowminded opinions … my guidance ends today!

An international bench warmer (Alonso) who has Euro Championship, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League medals… Barry, who has won NOTHING is older and warms the bench for England when they have have a full strength squad. Xabi was injured last season and has a better passing range, is more committed to the club than Barry ever could be (out of all of the Spanish players in our squad Xabi is the only one who doesn’t have Spanish Sky according to Guillem Balague’s excellent book ‘A Season on the Brink’) and he is a genuinely nice lad. Barry would serve a purpose in any Prem side but Villa have behaved in an immature and silly way… remember, this is the club who, ten years ago, poached Barry from Brighton for nothing when they were suffering dreadful financial difficulties. The South Coast team would not receive any sell on fees either because none were included in his original contract. The whole affair is another O’Neill paranoid smokescreen…
dobbo - August 12th, 2008 at 9:23 am
i think this is bullshit.. these owners want to win the leauge and dont want to spend monny, piss off you fuc*ing yanks.. barry is a waste anyway keep alonzo he has been staring in pre-season.. lfc forrever
Ben - August 12th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Yes defiently but they wont sell him for that!
Buzu - August 12th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Do we really need Barry?
how can anybody say that alonso isn’t playing well if they saw him in pre season? one his day he is twice as good as Barry and for 18 million i’d rather fork out 10 more for aguero.

Raiden - August 12th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Barry is not worth the trouble Liverpool Football Club are going through. Our reputation is being ruined by a midtable club with a manager who deserves a death sentence over a player who is slightly above average with no big game experience. Its time to move onto another option

Send in the Skrtel to kick the fuck out of O Neil that would make my day. Hate that cunt with a passion.

Rafa thinks Barry is worth £16m tops , Villa £18m, The yanks and Parry say £12m. I say £10m tops. Remember how much Rafa wanted for Crouch, and how much he went for?,,,Rafa is spend the yanks money not his own. and after so many bad buys ( and at £18m this would be another) they are entitled to step in and say £12m tops. Good on you Tom Hicks, George Gillett and Rick Parry

Ha ha, O´Squeal getting some of his own medcine, good enough for the dick.

if u see how much fergie paid for hargreaves and for carrick im sorry 18mill seems to be a fair price on reflection.. i seriously think if we get barry we will win the title and challenge on all fronts…. because he is english and proven in the premier leauge… i do agree tho that the yanks shud get out they have been nothing but trouble since taking over so i hope dic get a chance as we will be able to spend what rafa wants!!!!!!!
TLZ - August 12th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
18 Mill. for Barry? Absolutely silly for a player who truly isn’t totally necessary for the Reds success. Sure he would help, sure he’s proven in the premiership. He can play up the left in the midfield or back, and he can pass alright and win balls, but no way is this paceless player worth 18 mill. Hang on to the much more talented (yet equally slow) Xabi and save the money for a january transfer pick up to address mid season needs. Makes sense I think.
tom hick - August 13th, 2008 at 7:29 am
I don’t understand how liverpool think villa are in the wrong here. Its Liverpool who have been dragging clubs through the mud with their disgraceful antics. They already had to pay a tottenham charity compensation for their courting of keane. The Barry saga is purely down to Liverpool not paying the money, Villa are not a selling club and we are not going to sell our captain and best player for 12mill. You Liverpool fans don’t think he is worth it ,fine we’ll keep Barry like we have been trying to all along (however it seems somone values him at your club otherwise this would not still be on going).
Oz - August 13th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Great tactics by a united LFC team, they have pushed Villa into a corner where they must except less money for their captain.
I love it, will we get Barry for 14 M
monkey1234567890 - August 13th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
i hate to say it but the yanks are right on there valuation of barry he is only worth 12mil max!i think rafa should forget about barry because xabi is much better!!! he should use the 18mil to get someone like david silva! we need a class winger and he is only 22 and links up well with torres for spain!!
