Liverpool ready to make SHOCK bid for £15m star: I didn’t see this coming!
by Mr Comfort on August 13th, 2008According to the reports below, Rafa Benitez is looking to pounce after this Chelsea man reportedly expressed his annoyance at not being part of the new coach’s first team plans.

Rafael Benitez has reportedly declared an interest in the England international and Cole wants urgent assurances from new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari that he has a future at Stamford Bridge. (Telegraph)
Joe Cole is demanding assurances over his future from Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe
Scolari after Liverpool declared an interest in the England midfielder.
Cole fears he will be frozen out of the starting XI when the Barclays Premier League season starts against Portsmouth on Sunday and he has also been spooked by the potential arrival of Robinho.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who believes he has been priced out of a move for Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry, is aware of Cole’s predicament and is prepared to make a move if Chelsea indicate a willingness to sell.Sportsmail can reveal that Scolari has not been convinced by the England midfielder in pre-season and has urged Chelsea to sign Robinho as a direct replacement. (Daily Mail)
This is a shocker that I didn’t see coming, these reports (not from me i hasten to add but from the sources quoted above) are surprising to say the least. Joe Cole has been pretty consistent during his time at Stamford Bridge, but if Big Phil doesn’t rate the England man, then he will have plenty of suitors.
Rafa seems determined to look for a winger to add to his impressive forward pairing, and the former West Ham man could fit the bill very nicely indeed. The £15m-rated 26-year-old Chelsea man has bags of experience and could provide creativity that the Merseyside lack coming from out wide (with the exception of the excellent Babel). Do Liverpool fans think that Joe Cole would be a great signing or should their Spanish boss look elsewhere?

Joe Cole would be a very good signing, i know he plays for Chelsea, but i would still welcome him to the club!
Norman - August 13th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Fine player, exciting to watch could be perfect
Anonymous - August 13th, 2008 at 11:53 am
he is a good super player…
come 2 liverpool…
Dom - August 13th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Paper talk guys!
Aman Ramdeyal - August 13th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
I think he will be a very good signing if he does join Liverpool. Lets hope the American owners allow Rafa to bid for Joe Cole.
FlyOnTheWall - August 13th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
As apprehensive i have become about believing reports from here, i have been looking around, and this story has come up quite often. So, if this indeed is true, i surely hope liverpool would be uncharacteristic enough to actually “splash the cash” and get him. Beyond his obvious talents, he’s also english, which almost certainly helps the cause, and would thus require very little settling in time.
Although many might question the wisdom of chelsea selling to a potential rival, i’m sure even roman would like to recoup some cash from all his endeavours, so that at least he could spend some of that cash on buying mourinho another ferrari “as a gift”
Curbsout - August 13th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Get him back at West Ham!!!
Fearon - August 13th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Good skills that Raffa is trying to buy british before the 7+5 rule is instated. Once the official date is confirmed on that ruling, the price of good british players will exceed the already massively inflated price tags. The fact Joe Cole is class just makes it even better. Fingers crossed…
keep dreaming fellas - August 13th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
mad if you think chelsea would sell a player to us……
Johnboy - August 13th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
You didnt see it coming because its not true and thus not going to happen unfortunatly. Its just media rubish because Rafa mentioned an english player that could play in 3 different positions (which was clearly BARRY!) but as that now looks dead they are pulling stuff from their arses.
Ben - August 13th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Would love this to be true and actually happen! Joe Cole was a real thorn in our side a few seasons ago and would bring a welcome and much needed creativity to the side. I agree with the idea that buying British now is good just in case, but am not so sure that FIFA can make such rules stick in terms of employment law! Something you can guarantee the bigger clubs will invoke!
richard27 - August 13th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
i hope liverpool do sign joe cole he would be a very good signing and his a provern premiership player, only thing is will those 2 american wankers give benitez the money. after selling players in the summer for around 20mil and and buying players for 32mil i think we have really only spent 12mil, please dic save our club before those 2 clueless idiots ruin it
Blizt - August 13th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Mostly just paper talk but it would fit our system very well. Joe Cole has game intelligence, skills to beat a man, and puts in decent crosses and shots. He also chips in a few goals but is well underrated at Chelsea, the club who doesn’t think highly of english players. Decent price if this website is even reliable to quote the price.
Striker099 - August 13th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Great player, great skills, pacy and all … BUT I dnt fink Chelsea would sell any of his players to us lol
Matt - August 13th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
One can only hope that it´s true but I just can’t see it. Maybe maybe if the Robinho deal was very close to chelsea, then perhaps there would be a chance of them selling him to us with, probably, a heavy price tag.
Personally I would love to have a winger of his quality in the team
Striker099 - August 13th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Johnboy : Joe Cole also can play in 3 different positions!!!
dan - August 13th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
more bollox talk
Drilon - August 13th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Sign Cole and Barry.Buy only English players
Surry_McCurry7.9 - August 13th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Dont just sign english players apart from the ones at the top clubs already there is no good ones and if that was going to happen with cole hes worth more then 15 mil
Rich - August 13th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Would love to see him there, but it is just paper speculation after Rafa’s comments saying he’s after an Englishman to fill the void on the left who can play in 3 positions.
Think the Mail has just put 2 and 2 together to stir it up.
Papers sell because they offer up trash stories like this - August 13th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Papers sell because they offer up trash stories like this - August 13th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
oh and cole would really want to move from a club where he fights for his place against 5-6 others to a club where he fights for his place against 5-6 others, makes absolute sense doesnt it?
Red Barron - August 13th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Yeh yeh, we all know it is paper talk, but what we write on here is all speculation as well so that doesn’t make it less valid. So the boring people who can’t think of anything to say other than ‘paper talk’ and ‘bollox’, please come up with something worth reading!
Joe Cole would be a cracking signing for us. He can work the wing really well, takes on defenders, has pace and guile and reads the game well. He would team up with Stevie and our two front guys really well.
Will it happen? Well, I don’t think chelsea want valuable players costing them wages every week, and it is clear from their bids for Robinho that Cole is very much down their pecking order. That is no measure of Cole, more the fact that Scolari doesn’t play the game the way Cole fits best. He is better off selling him on and although they might not want to sell to a rival, Joe Cole will want to have a say in the matter. He is a very British player and I don’t see him wanting to go abroad as much as some do. I am also certain he will not be interested in a team outside the CL and that limits their choice of possible destinations for him.
Chelsea still consider Liverpool to be the weakest of their three main rivals so if they have to sell, I think they’d prefer Liverpool to either of the other two.
Will the cowboys from across the pond let us spend the cash? Now that is another debate!
2D - August 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
id love tosee this deal happen but im not especially interested in aquiring all english, the 6+5 rule will never happen blatter has been told by the european union that it is illegal, discrimination, limiting employment to foreign workers thats what it boils down to, mark my words it’ll never happen
Anonymous - August 13th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
no stay at chelsea!!!!!!!
Anonymous - August 13th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
BARRY+COLE =BIG CHANCE FOR SUCCESS
mark - August 13th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
never gonna sell him to us think about it!!!!!!!!!!
LFCfan2000 - August 13th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
If we did bid for him I reckon Big Phil would sell him 2 us as didn’t he say he wants the club loved by the world and that wouldn’t help us like them if they rejected lol. He would be a great player YNWA!
The Joker's Make-Up Artist - August 13th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
To Fearon. we all know what u r gettin at in your first sentence but i dont think u r allowed 12 players on a football pitch…
Jay the Red - August 13th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Am i the only one who thinks he’s a diving, moaning, cheatin little scum bag who rolls round the floor like he’s been shot more than he actually does any good?
I admit he’s a skillfull player when he wants to be, but does that really make up for him bein a complete c**t? Not in my eyes.
Hope this is all complete paper talk.
blackers - August 13th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
super player but cannot see this happenin as chelsea would be foolish to sell him to rivals, they would probably sell him abroad on the cheap than sell him to us. would love to see him at liverpool though, he’s like a rich man’s benayoun
JJ - August 13th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
asshole
Fred - August 13th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Yes i think we would Be very Lucky if we were to have A man with such quality Like Joe Cole have !!!!!!!!
Hope this comes true !!!!
J - August 13th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
do you guys just make all this stuff up?
Charlie - August 13th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
To J, are you an idiot? It says the source? It constantly shocks me when they read these pieces (not original i know) and then say “well thats more rubbish that won’ happen” yes its rumours, they are from the tabloids and websites, they are sourced. I mean i would understand people complaining if there was no source, but there is, so why ask “do you guys just make all this stuff up?” are you thick? Joe Cole would be a good signing, don’t think it will happen in August, but if he doesn’t start many games then by January maybe things will change.
chaz - August 13th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Not a cats chance in hell.
lee - August 13th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Joe Cole and Richadrs are the only english players i wish liverpool buy!
james94 - August 13th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
i think joe coal would make a great addition to the squade, especialy on the wing
Ben - August 13th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
It would be good to have him, but it will never happen, it is just more paper talk!
Ticky - August 13th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Agree that it’s probably just paper talk, but if not, what a great signing he would be. Doubt if Chelski would let him go to one of their rivals though - and certainly not for just £16m either.
Smee - August 13th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
I would rather keep Alonso. put Barry back on the shelf after much deliberating and then buy Cole.
This would be the best additional strength that Rafa could give Liverpool. But… Only if Cole’s heart will be in it for LFC.
Re-cap - Keep Alonso. Buy Cole (if he has the drive).
MPWHelan - August 13th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Joe Cole would be a very good addition to our side - creative, reliable and settled in the Premiership - I’d much prefer him to Silva. However, Gareth Barry is who we need - for 2 reasons: 1) he’s who Rafa wants and “in Rafa we trust” and 2) Alonso must be sold NOW! He had a great pre-season, but don’t be fooled - he’s a lovely footballer but needs so much time to do anything. I just watched the Standard Liege match and he was our worst player - if he’s put under any pressure he will give the ball away. He doesn’t score. He doesn’t tackle. He doesn’t make key passes. He doesn’t belong. Sorry Xabi, you will always be remembered fondly for Istanbul, YNWA.
David Villa - August 13th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Alonso was good against Standard Liege - Plessis was very poor and Kuyt and Benayoun were terrible on the wings. Thats why we need someone like Cole to create chances out of nothing. If chelsea get robinho its a possibility but I’m not convinced we have the money.
riggers - August 13th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
u have no money
GI Joe - August 13th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Joe Coal is going to Newcastle, nuff said duff!

Good move 4 him if robihno is coming to chelsea
Anonymous - August 14th, 2008 at 9:35 am
better than barry
spyro - August 14th, 2008 at 10:11 am
gi joe- newcastle dont sign quality players like cole and more importantly he wouldnt want to go to newcastle the jokers of the premiership.
I wonder if rafa is thinking that he may have dropped a bollock after watching keane prove that he isnt a 20mill player. he only looked good because of berbatov and torres isnt as good as berba. the look on his face when he was subbed made me laugh. get used to it robbie. youll be at newcastle or celtic in 2 years time.
Bradley Pearce - August 14th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Best left midfielder in england would be a great buy!!!! please rafa pull out all the stops to sign joey coz we deff need a left winger or we can kiss the leauge goodbye…!!!
spyro - August 14th, 2008 at 11:55 am
bp-you have no chance of winning the league. 5th place this season i reckon. watched last nights game and the bin dippers looked very poor.
Donavan Ried - August 14th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Joe Cole won’t come: Svilla doesn’t want to live Spain: Barry won’t come unless Aston Ville gets £18m: Milner, Dowing just romors( Thank god) COME ON RAFA, Quaresma or Schweinsteiger
ed - August 15th, 2008 at 7:11 am
chelsea has more england playes the liverpool and is not under rated. for some reson he is taken off erly in most games he starts wich normaly ends up with chelsea falling in a heep at the end of the game wich shows his worth to the team. if he is sold i would be very suprised. he is to good. this is like all the liverpool storys i read on this wepsite. wishful thinking. they have a good side but cant work out why they cant win the epl and chelsea will not make it any easer by selling them one of their best players. dream on and 4th again for you
