Arsenal to step up £18m star bid: Might be just what Arsene needs!
by Mr Comfort on August 17th, 2008As Wenger ponders his side’s average display against West Bromwich Albion, he is also said to be considering another move for this Liverpool midfielder.
Why not continue this discussion at the COS forum?
Arsenal have opened talks with Liverpool over a move for Xabi Alonso, it is being reported.
The Gunners are searching for an experienced midfielder after selling Mathieu Flamini, Alex Hleb and Gilberto this summer.
Arsene Wenger believes Alonso is his man, and the two clubs are currently discussing a deal.
However, the Spain international played in Liverpool’s Champions League qualifier against Standard Liege in midweek.
This means he is cup-tied in the competition until February, and that may affect the final transfer fee. (4thegame.co.uk)
ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger may step up his interest in Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso after media reports claim that the Spaniard has become disillusioned at Anfield.
The News of the World claims that while the 26-year-old would love to remain on Merseyside, he is unhappy with manager Rafa Benitez’s continued pursuit of Gareth Barry.
Despite the Reds board’s refusal to meet Aston Villa’s £18million valuation, Benitez appears set to go to war to sign his man even though it is thought to be unsettling Alonso.
And the Gunners, who have been linked with the midfielder, could make a move. The only snag is that Kop fans gave Alonso huge support in the midweek Champions League fixture against Standard Liege, which may well prove a snag for Wenger as the player is now cup-tied from Europe.
However with the search still on for reinforcements at the Emirates, Wenger may still make a move. (Waltham Forest Guardian)
Alonso looked pretty sharp after he came on against Sunderland, he almost pulled off another halfway line finish and showed that he still had a lot to offer. However, Rafa doesn’t seem that bothered if he leaves and indeed would be thankful for the money from his sale according to many reports. Having already played in the Champions League may of course prove very problematic but could this instead bring the price of the Spaniard down to a level that the Arsenal boss may consider move appropriate.
Arsene is said to value Xabi in the £12-£14m bracket. It’s a deal that could well be struck but would it happen before the end of the month or is it one that is more likely in January? Do Arsenal fans like the idea of a Alonso move and do Liverpool fans hope that Benitez keeps their mercurial midfielder?

Billy - August 17th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Clearly Alonso is the best fit for Arsenal so whatever the price is Arsene buy him!
Drr - August 17th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
He’s not eligable for CL action so his value to us is much less than it was!
18M was a strech when he was eligable, now, not a chance!
dibbler - August 17th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
as we were told by villa all season and by everyone else that is the price pay it or fuck off welcome to our world arses
arsenal 4ever - August 17th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
so he’s cup tied in the champs lge until february, so we’ll get through that alright as we’ll be seeded, and he will strike up a dream partnership with cesc. i rekon that liverpool will accept a deal for 14 million as long as we agree to pull out of the barry deal and rafa will tell the yanks he is short in midfield to get barry- deal done!
Neal - August 17th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Arsenal 4ever, he’ll be cup-tied in the CL until the end of the season. He would be elegible for the UEFA Cup in Feb.
Wenger’s not after him. He doesn’t fit the requirements. Bring on Gokhan Inler!
Able - August 17th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
fuck Inler. Alonso is the man we need!
Neal - August 17th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
How is he; we need someone to tackle. Alonso is a playmaker, not a tackler! Inler’s our man.
Remember, Wenger said he’ll get a big player, not a big name! Some people just listen to the name!
Rifleryan - August 17th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
i think Alonso will be a good signing for Arsenal, i think he should go for about 12m cos he cant play in the champions league now, come on wenger get your cheque book out.
borngooner - August 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
getting alonso is worth the reduced price
its ok that e will be unavailable in CL group stages but we can use him in the knockout n seriously this yr its all about EPL to win
gunners rock on !!!
Neal - August 17th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
No we couldn’t use him in the knockout stages. A player can only play for a side in a different UEFA competition in February. This means Barry can play in the Champions League in February because he’s only played in the UEFA Cup. He can’t play in the UEFA Cup this season for another club.
Alonso cannot play for another club in the Champions League this season, but he could play for another side in the UEFA Cup from February. He’s still not the player we need. Denilson and Cesc offer us all the same, Wenger knows this.
LEON - August 17th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
i think so we need someone who can protect the defence very mush dm,we dont attacking mid , we have no problem ith at area ,i think alonso is more of an attacking player, and arsenal already has attcking options in abondants
David Villa - August 17th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Benitez won’t accept anything less than £18mil - do you think he cares about Arsenal in the champions League, you’re not getting a discount. Welcome to liverpool’s world where if you don’t pay the asking price you won’t get him.
Neal - August 17th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
We won’t pay £18m, and we won’t get a discount. We are not interested in him!
G4L - August 17th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
FOR FUCK SAKE WE CANNOT AFFORD ALONSO FOR 18MIL WENGER ONLY BUYS AFRICANS.
ZOm - August 17th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
why is Alonso not eligible for Champions League action?
Neal - August 17th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Because he’s played for Liverpool in it.
David Villa - August 17th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
alonsos the manager we need.lots of experience managing barcelona
robert - August 17th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
He is cup bound, he is overpriced and he is not good enough when it comes to defending. We need a midfielder who at defending, someone like Nigel De Jong, Inler or Veloso……
Gunner90 - August 17th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
The Alonso deal is a non-starter. Wenger will not pay 14/18 million for a midfield player especially one in their late twenties. Same reason he won’t go for Barry either. The wages either player will demand are another reason nothing will happen.
brandon - August 17th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
fuck off veloso is d man wenger is goin for dats d reason why he said he won’t mind spending big on one player and with everyone speculating alonso and inler their value would increase cause wwenger shows public interrest he always go for d one which is less speculated veloso is our man he is quality he can play dm and anyway in d backline we would get him for 15 mil pounds
Stu - August 18th, 2008 at 12:58 am
As much as i like xabi he isn’t a defensive midfielder. He is a deep lying playmaker and another one of those is the last thing we need. Even if he wasn’t cuptied £18m is way too much to ask for a player rafa doesn’t even want.
Anonymous - August 18th, 2008 at 1:41 am
Alonso or any other midfielder, arsenal need’s them now! We need players that can take the places of Flamini & Hleb and we all (arsenal fans) will be happy with our wonderful squard.

Didier George - August 18th, 2008 at 2:02 am
Prof. Wenger, use your past experience about our last game against wbrm and sign more players to our midfield. Cant you see we’r lacking experienced midfield’s options? I dont care about who we sign, but, what we’hv signed. Gunner4lif !!.
GunnerIndia - August 18th, 2008 at 6:53 am
Goekhan Inler will the man arsenal will bring in or it may be Veloso/De la Red as a surprise by this week.
Alonso being cup tied will not help as the CL is a competition where we need more experience then the BPL.
ben azoa - August 18th, 2008 at 8:53 am
18m for Alonso fook off bring Inler
Dennoh - August 18th, 2008 at 9:26 am
alonso is fit to play 4arsenal wenger go for him.don’t talk shit that wenger buys only africans he buys quality players.
OLIVETTI - August 18th, 2008 at 9:44 am
yol play shit anyways
Anonymous - August 18th, 2008 at 10:37 am
if Barry is worth 18 million then 14 m for alonso is a bargain. just the type player arsenal needs. nasri alonso fabregas and rosicky would be the best mid field quartet in the league closely followed by chelsea and totteham
Neal - August 18th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Nasri, Alonso, Fabregas, Rosicky would get mullered. There’s no strength there. No tackling ability. Bring on Inler.
Finn - August 18th, 2008 at 11:39 am
a midfield where not one can put in a tackle. sadly he will bring in johnson from man city
Superloco - August 18th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
alonso’s price tag has dropped coze he is cup tied soo i dont theres a problem for arsenal to buyin him
gunner2008 - August 18th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Veloso!!
Arsenal Forever - August 18th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
We wont sign him because we have no money.
Didier George - August 18th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
wtf I dont think thats true some how.
Arsenal Forever - August 18th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Its true because of the cost of the Emirates.
Thats why we had to sell HLEB, not that it matters we will still have a good season.
Neal - August 18th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
£25m +£13m-£13m-£5m = £20m
Yes, we have the money.
kitch - August 18th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Alonaso too slow
mike - August 18th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
g4l arsenal have 3 african players and anyway whats wrong with african players?? veloso all the way
PURE LIES - August 18th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Donavan Ried - August 19th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Altough I do not agree with the Sale of alonso if we are not going to play him regular ( Which we should be doing) then sell him, and get him off the pay roll.
Lar - August 22nd, 2008 at 9:47 am
xabi alonso is the best player around for arsenal rite now! if we get him we will challenge for the league and if we dont den we wont. thats how simple it is so weather they want 14 mil or 30 mil just fcukin pay it. there is no1 more perfect for arsenal
Neal - August 22nd, 2008 at 9:52 am
Alonso is the one player linked to us we DON’T need. We need someone who can tackle, not a poor Cesc clone. Cesc-Alonso would get kicked off the pitch. How badly will Cesc play if he has to defend as well?
Wenger is not interested in Alonso. Liverpool are using Arsenal’s name to try and get someone interested in him.
