Liverpool looking to complete STRANGE £16m deal
by Mr Comfort on August 18th, 2008Apparently Rafa is still very much keen on offloading this hugely talented Spaniard who is already a big target for Arsenal and Juventus.
Why not join the debate at the COS forum?
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has admitted he is looking to sell Xabi Alonso to fund more signings at Anfield.
The Spain midfielder has been linked with a £16million move to Juventus or Arsenal as Benitez seeks to generate the money to finally sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa for £18m.
But Benitez confirmed Alonso remains down the pecking order at Anfield. ‘I explained to him why I needed money for signing other players,’ said Benitez.
‘He can understand if you have [Javier] Mascherano, Lucas, Steven Gerrard and then [Damien] Plessis, you have four other midfielders and maybe you can afford to sell one player.’ (The Metro)
Xabi helped Liverpool overcome a resilient Sunderland side on Saturday after he came on as sub but Rafa has reiterated his desire to sell the talented midfielder so as to help generate the funds needed for the much talked about Gareth Barry transfer. The Aston Villa skipper helped his side to an emphatic victory over Manchester City but is still very much hoping for an Anfield move even though the price tag for the England international will surely be lessened due to his ineligibility for the Champions League group stages. It does seem strange for Rafa to be looking to sell Alonso as he is in my mind the club’s second best midfielder after Gerrard. Do Liverpool fans feel Rafa is wrong to be looking to cash in on a Xabi exit?

“When I was first talking with Xabi (about a transfer) we needed money. After these months it is not a question of money. We would have to have a massive offer because Alonso is a great player.
“But if we sell one or two players we have enough money to bring in one more good player.
“Don’t forget we will need eight British players - and the left-footer we were talking about can play in three positions too.”
Dubrogue - August 18th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Sell Alonso and bring on Barry. Barry was awesome for the Villains at the weekend. Simple but so effective, just what Liverpool need. Thanks Xabi but time to move on. YNWA
SDCMAN - August 18th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Barry won’t go for a lesser fee cause he played in Europe because Villa don’t need or want to sell so liverpool have to pay the fee or he won’t be moving…simple

Benitez is a fcukin clown and needs to get sacked by the Board asap
The guy’s brand of hoofball is depressing and his tendency to wash his skiddeys in public together with spitting his dummy out is embarrassing for our great club.
The guy hasnt got a clue. Our flanks are our weakness yet he obsesses with central midfielders when we already have Gerrard and mascherano, two of the very best in the world.
FFS get rid of this clown before StevieG is too old to fulfil his destiny and lead us to the League Title from central midfield without this joker fooling around on his ego trip when he doesnt even understand English football!
if you’re going to raid Villa, you should have went after Ashley Young you fuggin idiot. Everyone can see we need to strengthen our flanks so why cant Benitesz? Gareth fuggin Barry…his “main target”…get a grip Rafa ffs….we’ve been waiting more than FOUR fuggin years for you to sort out our flanks ffs!!!!

How dare you call yourself a fucking liverpool supporter when u go and throw insults at the man who took us to istanbul, and fucking won us the champions leage!!! or what are you forgetting all about that? No ones perfect u cant expect rafa to win everything for us all the time, thats merely impossible….all we can do is put our faith in rafa as the manager of LFC, and trust he will be experienced enough to make the right decision. Watch your mouth before making ignorant comments.

If Barry is worth £18mil, then Alonso must be worth £30mil.

Barry to Liverpool, Alonso leaving Liverpool….this has been going on for 4 months….Seriously there are more important issues to worry about, so unless a deal is finalised, stop writing rubbish.

Barry is better an worth more than Shabby Alonso
0500Silva - August 19th, 2008 at 4:56 am
Barry is better and worth more than Shabby Alonso, his performances thus far have been far from the heroic effort that most fans claim, If you actually watch those videos you realise how poor a player he really is and why he’s a bench warmer/possibly out of the squad soon for spain. He fluked one pass which he never intended to be a pass when the ball was bouncing around everywhere and he hit it forward and went between Gerrard’s legs and found Torres, its absolute rubbish and he becomes oh wow alonso look at him. What total crap. Alonso is shit end of story. it was a total fluke and Torres done all the work. Barry on the other hand was the main creator of the goals for Villa….he is a top class midfielder…not mr shabby balls…Alonso….I hope Juve buy him so he can join our other reject Sissoko
0500Silva - August 19th, 2008 at 4:59 am
Juventus fans have been giving the manager plenty recently about not getting a decent signing in midfield or elsewhere. So there is no doubt there is still the possibility of Alonso ending up there because Liverpool would even lower the price to send him to the Liverpool midfield reject tip - Juventus rather than see him in the EPL playing for Arsenal. Juve definately are in the chase for Alonso.

being both a football fan and a Journalism/English major at Univeristy, what the so called “mr. comfort” puts forth week in and week out is both an abomination to the english language and the art of journalism. If i believed in a god, id pray to him to have mercy on mr. comfort’s soul….

XABI ALONSO IS ONE OF THE BEST IN OUR TEAM AND IN THE WORLD TOO,WHY U WANT TO SELL HIM ?EVERYONE WANT HIM,WHY TO SELL WHEN WE HAVE HIM ?THIS IS A BIG MISTAKE
FT NO.9 - August 19th, 2008 at 8:39 am
This polish player jakub looks like an excellent decision for Rafa to sign for our wing, he has all the qualities that we need!! For 8 million it seems like a bargain and as for the blog posted by Mr fabric softener, what a load of bullshit….
OLIVETTI - August 19th, 2008 at 8:47 am
why sell alonso ,when plessis play like a 18 year old , old man , he lacks pace same with xabi , but xabi can pick a 60 yard pass with ease whie plessis cant
sell plessis would be a viable option , cause if you want to sell xabi you rather buy a world class winger , because that what liverpool has never replaced since barnes

Postmodernist - August 19th, 2008 at 9:54 am
I expect that Mancini would prefer Alonso to stay.
Tired Of This Bary Crap - August 19th, 2008 at 11:18 am
For all you Villa fans out there, yes, you have the right to sitck to your guns and demand what-ever for your captain. To all us Liverpool fans, why don’t we just hold off until January, sign the lad for nothing to join us next year, keep Xavi for at least this year and spend the money we have available now on wingers!
Karim - August 19th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Tuesday - August 19th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
No reason to expect Barry’s price to drop because he is cup-tied - why would that affect Villa’s valuation of a player they don’t want to sell?
Jason - August 19th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
You really think Barry will go to the plop when Liege knock them out of Europe?
They should have been 4 down from the 1st leg………….!
Another pointless story - August 19th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Couldn’t agree more (shanklyslegacy) you’ve said the exact truth, Benitez should now go and we should bring in Murinho. Obviously Benitez doesn’t know what he’s doing half the time, we need an amazing right and left winger.

The best solution for the ongoing problem after all is to GET THE YANKS OUT.
The two owners are too greedy and idiotic to run this wonderful club. Rick Pary is also stubborn. Get this idiotic man out. Otherwise, you cannot win any trophy. We sign KEANE for 20m pounds. United will sign Berbatov for 25m pounds. You have a second best player at Liverpool while the first best goes to ManUnited. The problem is with the owners. They want the fucking title but don’t want to splash money on world class players. you have too many average players to win the title this season. You will come third or fourth in the end.
Janan - August 20th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Alonso is a good player but the problem is that his performance
isnot consistent. I hope that liverpool fans are not stupid. His
performance is yo-yo. In the last three months, he knew that
Rafa wanted to sell him so he tried to impress Rafa and fans
to let him stay at Liverpool. But if you allow him to be at
Liverpool for another season, his performance will be getting
poor again. I think the idiotic Hicks and Gillets as well as
Rick Pary donot see this point because they are all fucking
stupid.
