Can anyone stop Birmingham from winning the Championship?
by stresster on August 19th, 2008What happens when you’re drawing or losing a football match in the English second flight? Do you a) panic and tell the team to play it long, b) send your central defender into attack or c) bring on Kevin Phillips to save the day?
For Birmingham City, the latter option has worked in their opening two matches, with the former West Brom and Sunderland forward bagging the winner against Sheffield United and Southampton. It means that the Blues have six points instead of one or two - does their abundance of firepower mean that they are a sure bet to be promoted at the first time of asking?
Who do you think will be promoted from the Championship? Reading have had a solid start in their first two matches, although is it a concern that the only two goals have been scored by a centre-half? Sheffield United had no such worries, after Billy Sharp bagged a hat-trick against QPR, while Ipswich and Wolves were also full of goals against Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday respectively.
Perhaps a dark horse like Preston could go really well this season, especially after beating Ipswich and Crystal Palace in their opening two games. But are they, or any other team, capable of matching a Birmingham team which can boast the likes of Phillips, Bent, Jerome, O’Connor, McSheffrey and McFadden?

Blues will be a force to be reckoned with this season. But our Achilles heel remains the lack of back-line depth. It’s a very long and physical season in the fizzy-pops and a couple of injuries to key players in defense is going to hamper our chances for automatic promo.
We need a few more players challenging for spots in the back.
But very excited by the energy and positive noises from the dressing room, and coaching staff.

I totally agree with the above comment that the only team who can stop Birmingham are ourselves! We are the best team in this league and theres no point beating around the bush! However that does not mean we will just win it, we have to earn it! The championship is a tricky division, however you can get out of it by playing football, and I hope that is what we will do! Im gutted I cant go to the Barnsley game on sat as im at the reading festival, but good luck to the boys and hope the fans sing liud and clear and get behind them.

Birmingham have a great front-line and a skillful and committed midfield. However, they are a bit light at the back.
If they remain relatively injury free they’ll cruise this league. Good to see that Larrson stayed with them too… he’ll be back in the Prem next season.

Ur right we do need a better defence but our forward line will get the goals. The blues fans need to start singing again to get us at a top level again…K.R.O

Im confident Birmingham will get promoted this season but i dont thionk it will be as easy as people think. If we dont improve our back line, evn though we havnt conceded many as yet, it will eventually be our down fall! Come on Big Eck, Blues cannot rely on players like Martin Taylor and Jaidi at the back. To many mistakes from them will cost us!

I’ve been saying all summer that we need at least another centre half if not two. I agree with the sentiments expressed above but we have to be more dependable at set pieces than we were last season. Teams are going to make it very difficult to score against them (Sheffield United are a classic example) and Birmingham will have to maintain a high level of performance throughout as the Southampton match showed. Providing Blues beat the teams they should beat i.e. those in the lower half of the table on a consistent basis and hold their own against the rest promotion will be assured. If not it could be tricky. I haven’t forgotten Norwich, Southend, Barnsley, Ipswich, Luton and Leeds from two years ago. Silly draws at home to poor quality teams also cost us the title eventually. We did so much better against the teams near the top but it has always been thus. Let’s not have a repeat of those sorts of frustrations please Blues.
