Chelsea captain given the nod for England skipper ahead of Man United defender - the right choice?
by stresster on August 19th, 2008What do you make of Fabio Capello’s decision to make John Terry the permanent captain of England? Do you strongly agree that the self-styled JT should have been given the role, do you think that someone else like Rio Ferdinand or Steven Gerrard were better choices to take this position of responsibility, or do you think it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference and that you’re not even that bothered about Eng-er-land?

Eurosport reports that the sometime-weepy Chelsea skipper has been given the nod, despite his referee baiting of last season. Is it just me or is Fabio Capello not standing my his original decisions, such as making someone else England captain and leaving out David Beckham from his first squad?
“It means the world to me to retain the armband,” said Terry who was told by Italian Capello that he would be captain after England’s training session on Tuesday morning.
“To get the armband back is a huge achievement for me.
“It was about an hour ago, just after training. The manager called the whole squad together and told us as a whole.
“For me to get it above the likes of him (Ferdinand) and the other players in the squad is a great honour.”
Capello said: “John’s big personality is why I chose him but Rio is also important for the team which is why I made him vice-captain.”
“Rio, when he was captain, played very well - the same level as John,” he added. “It was not easy for me to choose because they are very good players.”
Surely selecting someone other than Terry would have represented a departure from the McLaren era, but it seems as though there’s an increasing continuity taking place under Capello. Not finding room for Ashley Young in an England squad is difficult to swallow, and it’s even harder to see why Terry has been given the nod as captain.

in a word NO! as much as it pains me to say it as a kopite, between the 2 supposed candidates Rio is probably a stronger leader. JT is a leader for his own vanity, proven by the way he falls to pieces when things dont go right for ( semi final defeats to liverpool and defeat to Utd in Russia ). Both are great players but i think Rio would have been a much better and perhaps more respected leader.
